FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Light of Christ Catholic Collaborative, In today’s Gospel Jesus gives the parable of the two sons. Both are told to work in the vineyard. One of them, at first, says “no,” but then has a change of heart, and goes to work. The second son, at first, says “yes,” but then also has a change of heart, and does not work. The first is praised for doing the Father’s will, while the second is not, regardless of his words. “Actions speak louder than words,” is a saying that we all understand and it sums up the message of our Gospel. We cannot be Christians in word only. It is not enough to have good thoughts, to have good inspirations, to have plans for doing good, or amending our lives for the better. It is necessary to put these into action. Maybe I have been feeling pulled to pray more, to read some spiritual reading, go to confession more regularly, to be more generous with the poor, or more patient with the people in my life, to work harder for our Collaborative. These thoughts are great, but they only do us real good when we carry them through. It is when we put these things into action that we do the will of the Father. We are putting into action our faith as a two-parish Collaborative. Our working together is what the New Evangelization is all about. We are bringing the message of Jesus to our families, friends, and neighbors. We pray that they become intentional disciples as we have become. And we pray that our personal witness and our own commitment to being intentional disciples will not only be a “yes” but also a “yes” put-into-practice. The Joint Parish Council Members met a week ago for the first time since our summer break. It was good to meet up with everyone again. A few things that were discussed: Because of Fr. Tom’s days off and my days off, Monday through Thursday there is only one priest available for the two parishes. We have had a lot of Funerals recently. And many times the Funerals are scheduled in the parish where there is not a daily Mass. So the priests have been having to celebrate 2, sometimes 3 or more Masses on a given day, while still trying to keep their already busy schedules. The Joint Parish Council recommended that the daily Mass in one parish may be canceled when necessary to accommodate a Funeral in the other parish. Concerning our Local Pastoral Plan with Disciples in Mission, we will be forming a Stewardship Committee and a Vocation Committee within the next few months. If you wish to be a part of those committees, please contact me directly. Regarding the Vocation Committee, we will be finding a Special Prayer for Vocations that we will be printing and reciting at Mass on a regular basis in the near future.

Haiti 180 Mission Trip

My name is Alyssa Gendreau, and I am a senior at Abington High School. I grew up here in town, and am a lifelong parishioner here at Saint Bridget's. This upcoming February, me and about 15 other kids from the area will be traveling to the villages of Duverger and Danndan in Haiti, where we will work in the Haiti 180 program. Haiti 180, founded by Sean Forrest, has worked hard in the past 15 years to build an orphanage, school, medical center, church and a home for the elderly, and our mission is to help work in these places, as well as spend time connecting to and praying with the villagers. As an organization strongly rooted in faith, traveling with Haiti 180 will allow me to get to see the love and true joys of God in action, as I prepare to head out and start a new chapter in college. I'm very excited for this trip, and I would like to extend my most sincere gratitude for any donations. The amount needed for this trip is $2,200, but any and everything helps not just me, but so many down in Haiti as well. I will be receiving donations this weekend at St. Bridget’s Church after all the Masses. Thank you for your consideration, and God Bless!

A Change in Music Ministry: The Bessette’s who sing and play at the 12 Noon Mass at St. Bridget’s are stepping down after many years of ministry. The 12 Noon time slot is not a good fit for them anymore as a family. Their last weekend with us will be Columbus Day weekend. We are so very grateful to all of them for their inspiring music and song throughout the years. It was always said that when you sing, you pray twice. We are in the process of creating a new team of people who will play and sing at the 12 Noon Mass. Please keep this as a prayer intention. Thank you to all who gave generously to last week’s Second Collection for the relief efforts to those areas devastated by the recent Hurricanes and natural disasters. Please continue to remember in your prayers all of our brothers and sisters in the afflicted areas and the first responders working on the relief efforts. Let us pray for each other. God bless, Father Mahoney

Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality

The Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality will hold its meeting in Fr. Glennon hall at Holy Ghost church on Monday, October 5th. We will start at 6:30 PM with the rosary. Following the rosary our speaker for the evening will be Mr. Rick Casey of the Angel House. Refreshments and a raffle will round out the evenings. We look forward to new members joining us.
