Prayer for Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed

your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to you, loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with you Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your divine Son to reach heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen. Bishop Maurice Shexnayder

From the Pastor’s Desk

Since my brain is all over the place this morning, I decided to write an all-over-the-place article as well. So here goes:

Violence: Please continue to pray for victims of violence, as well as the misguided ones who con-tinue to see violence as a solution. Alongside that prayer, we might pray for an end to the hatred and prejudice in the hearts of whoever might be afflicted with that disease of hatred.

Flood Victims: With the debris removed from the roadside, and water damage that leaves walls standing and roofs intact, I think many of our flood victims are disappearing from our sight, as all of us try to con-tinue with life as usual. Yet those whose homes were destroyed by the floods face a long agonizing recovery, as they too try to live as normal a life as is possible. At the least, let us keep them in our prayers as well.

Come, Lord Jesus!: Thank you for listening, and for considering making this small group based, faith-sharing program a part of your life. We have a group that will begin meeting this week on Tuesday eve-nings, which is great beginning. Pray too, for the success of this “program” in our parish, which means praying that we may all remain open to God’s saving grace.

A Pale Blue Dot: This week I ran across an excerpt from Carl Sagan ’s 1994 book, “Pale Blue Dot”. It was paired with a photograph of Earth taken by the Voyager spacecraft on February 14, 1990, from a distance of 3.7 billion miles. Of the 640,000 pixels in the photo, the Earth takes up 0.12 of one pixel, a ‘pale blue dot’ caught in a ray of sunshine. Of this tiny dot, Sagan wrote: “Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doc-trines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.”

And in the midst of all that there is a God we call Creator, and Redeemer, and Comforter, who is a God of mercy and loving kindness. In the face of the flood, and the violence, and the sadness, this Merciful God is our hope and salvation. And so, as we stand on this pale blue dot, we have the courage to pray.
