El Santo Evangelio Según San Marcos (Mc 10, 35-45) En aquel tiempo, se acercaron a Jesús Santiago y Juan, los hijos de Zebedeo, y le dijeron: “Maestro, que-remos que nos concedas lo que vamos a pedirte”. Él les dijo: “¿Qué es lo que desean?” Le respondieron: “Concede que nos sentemos uno a tu derecha y otro a tu izquierda, cuando estés en tu gloria”. Jesús les replicó: “No saben lo que piden. ¿Podrán pasar la prueba que yo voy a pasar y recibir el bautismo con que seré bautizado?” Le respondieron: “Sí podemos”. Y Jesús les dijo: “Ciertamente pasarán la prueba que yo voy a pasar y recibirán el bautismo con que yo seré bautizado; pero eso de sentarse a mi derecha o a mi izquierda no me toca a mí concederlo; eso es para quienes está reservado”.

Cuando los otros diez apóstoles oyeron esto, se indignaron contra Santiago y Juan. Jesús reunió entonces a los Doce y les dijo: “Ya saben que los jefes de las naciones las gobiernan como si fueran sus dueños y los poderosos las oprimen. Pero no debe ser así entre ustedes. Al contrario: el que quiera ser grande entre ustedes, que sea su servidor, y el que quiera ser el primero, que sea el esclavo de todos, así como el Hijo del hombre, que no ha venido a que lo sirvan, sino a servir y a dar su vida por la redención de todos”.

MEDITACIÓN: MARCOS 10, 35-45

El Hijo del hombre no ha venido a que lo sirvan, sino a servir y a dar su vida por la redención de todos. (Marcos 10, 45)

Se estima que las compañías incipientes de Internet tratan de obtener la ganancia de diez años en solo tres. Imagina la extenuante cantidad de trabajo que todo el equipo debería realizar para obtener estos re-sultados en tan poco tiempo y los sacrificios que cada miembro tendría que hacer para obtener el éxito de la compañía.

Ahora imagina lo que sucedería si, un día, uno de los empleados de alguna de estas compañías se pusiera de pie durante una reunión y pidiera al fundador que lo nombre un ejecutivo clave por encima de los de-más. Imagínalo pidiendo la oficina más grande y todos los demás beneficios que vienen con el puesto. ¿Cómo crees que reaccionarían sus compañeros de trabajo? ¡Todos han trabajado igual de fuerte! ¿Por qué este amigo querría tener un trato especial?

Este escenario es una muestra moderna de la lectura del Evangelio de hoy, en la que Santiago y Juan le piden a Jesús que les garantice un lugar especial cuando llegue a su Reino. Todos los discípulos habían trabajado fuerte y habían seguido a Jesús con fidelidad, entonces, ¿por qué estos dos debían estar por en-cima de los demás? Pareciera que Santiago y Juan no habían entendido tres aspectos importantes. Primero, no entendían que Jesús estaba destinado a un reino celestial, no terrenal. No comprendieron que él quería edificar un reino centrado en la misericordia y el amor, no en el poder y el dominio.

Segundo, que Jesús había venido a morir, no a reinar. No vino a ser servido como la realeza, sino a servir a su pueblo, al punto de entregar su propia vida por ellos.

Finalmente, que esta no era una competencia. ¡Todos los que sirven a Jesús recibirán un lugar de honor en el cielo!

Al igual que los apóstoles, tú también eres parte del equipo de Jesús. ¿Cómo te está llamando él a entre-gar tu vida al servicio de su Reino?

The Holy Gospel According to Saint Mark (MK 10:35-45) James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” He replied, “What do you wish me to do for you?” They answered him, “Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left.” Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” They said to him, “We can.” Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink, you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

When the ten heard this, they became indignant at James and John. Jesus summoned them and said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

MEDITATION: MARK 10:35-45

Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left. (Mark 10:37) James and John didn’t quite get it, but then again neither did the other apostles! To their credit, James and John did believe that Jesus would reign in glory. They had heard him predict his passion (Mark 10:32-34) and seemed to believe that some kind of glory would follow whatever suffering Jesus had foretold. And they wanted to be part of it. They wanted to have seats of honor right next to Jesus’ throne. Maybe these two saw Jesus’ passion and death as just one step in the process—a sad but necessary step toward their own glory. They seemed to miss the fact that giving himself up for us defined the mission of Jesus, and it characterized his kingdom. Jesus came to serve, not to be served (Mark 10:45). He wanted James and John—and all his followers—to understand that his glory was at its height when he emptied himself. His followers would be counted as great to the extent that they imitated his attitude, humbling themselves and becoming the servants of all (10:43-44). So, what will it look like when Jesus comes in glory? The Book of Revelation describes a heavenly throne room with Jesus looking like a lamb that had been slain (5:6). In heaven, he still bears the marks of his sacrifice, and the angels and saints praise him for the beauty of his humble self-gift. The lofty throne James and John were imagining was actually more like an altar of sacrifice than a seat of government. As you come to Mass today, know that the glorious Lord, the Lamb of God, is offering himself to you once again in the sacrifice of the Eucharist. There is glory in this sacrifice, in his life poured out for you. Let it inspire you to go and pour yourself out for others. “Lord, let me see your glory today!”

Campaign to Replace the Roof: Restoring the Past, Embracing the Future

As you may know, our church roof needs to be replaced as soon as possible. We need you to accomplish our goal of raising $700,000 which is the amount estimated to replace the roof and make the needed repairs to the church interiors.
