The Epsom Skin Clinic

Laser Liposuction is an innovative concept in laserassisted Liposculpture, which targets areas of fat thatare resistant to diet and exercise.

It is a minor procedure for body contouring which uses a fine cannula to deliver a safe, powerful laser to disrupt the fat cells causing them to break down. The fat deposits can then be removed using light suction. The Laser Liposuction treatment is performed under local anaesthetic, is permanent, safe and gives minimal downtime.

From the PublisherWell here we are, Christmas is almost upon us and, as ever, I am about toexplode with excitement, my cakes are ready to be finished off - this year I’mgoing for a nut and glacé fruit topping to ring the changes. The Christmascards will be written, the tree decorated and the house will look, in my mind,a colour plate from Homes & Gardens, but I am deluding myself... It’s the onlytime of year that gold, red, green, silver and purple will ever be seen togetherin one room.

The Leatherhead Christmas Festival starts off the season on Saturday 3rdDecember - all the details can be found in the centre pages. Ashtead’sChristmas Shopping evening will be held on Tuesday 6th December - details overleaf, and theLeatherhead Lions’ Santa’s Christmas float will begin touring around the area from Sunday 4th, and thisyear their chosen charity will be Combat Stress, so please give generously, details on page 24.

What larks we had in October. My partner Matthew, and I took a well-earned break for a few days andhired a boat on the Norfolk Broads. It was one of the funniest breaks we ever had. Trying to moor a36ft cruiser was a challenge in itself. I was the one who picked the short straw and jumped from theboat onto dry land to moor the bloomin’ thing, I was getting so fed up with it by the end of the holidaythat I was jumping on the bank wearing my slippers much to the amusement of the locals, at whichpoint we then decided to christen my slippers ‘Maureens’ - do you see what we were doing there?

Since the beginning of October I have been on a low-fat diet. Not really a keen or serial dieter, I choseto cook lovely, flavourful meals - made with garlic, chillies, ginger and all manner of spices and havesince lost 1½ stones, but sadly this has made no difference to my chin...

A few weeks ago, whilst on my regime, I thought I could dowith some exercise as I am now officially the size of a smallterraced house, and joined Curves gym on Kingston Road,Leatherhead. Now for those of you who know me, I dislike anyform of physical activity, other than walking to the fridge orbending down to remove a pizza from the oven, and it will alsocome as a huge surprise to you that I am actually starting toquite enjoy my 30 minute sessions at the club.

I think what’s so nice about Curves is that the members aremade up of women of all ages and sizes and it is very friendly.Sylvia - who runs the club - is very welcoming, and is ablyassisted by two sisters - the lovely Charlotte and Holly - who dotheir utmost to encourage me (not a pretty sight) and my halfhour passes very quickly. Essentially it is circuit trainingconsisting of different machines, and in between theequipment are stations where you do star jumps, kicks and allsorts of aerobic stuff, so there isn’t really any time to getbored. Curves can be found between the fish and chip shopand Leatherhead ambulance station...

I would like to thank The Greville School in Ashtead for theirhelp in providing such a cheerful and seasonal front cover thismonth and for the pupils being so very well behaved when AndyNewbold showed up to take the photos.

Finally, all that remains is for me to wish you a peaceful andhappy Christmas with your loved ones.

My very best wishes,

Zen GeorgePublisher01372 [email protected]

That’s 2011 done...

ASHTEAD RESIDENTS’ASSOCIATION

Founded 1945www.ashteadresidents.org.uk

I thought it was an age thing to be saying“Where has the year gone?” but it seems tobe across all ages. It must be because we areall so busy!

2011 for the ARA has seen changes to theCommittee as highlighted at the April AGM.We still need more support and anyonewishing to help, whether on the Committeeor as a ‘Friend’, should contact us on thenumber below. Committees are noteveryone’s “cup of tea” but we can find arole for you outside this formality.

Our Road Stewards’ drinks and refreshmentsevening in July was an opportunity to“communicate” and bid our farewells to theoutgoing Chairman, Paul LeVersha and thankhim for his sterling work. The AutumnMeeting was very well attended withinteresting presentations on the proposedrebuild of Ashtead Station, and the OlympicCycle Race through Surrey and theopportunities and challenges it presents.

What then for 2012? It will bring itschallenges and issues I have no doubt. WillTesco resurface and declare its revisedintentions? How will the Cherkley Courtdevelopment affect us? What is the future forthe Pippbrook site? What improvements willwe see in Ashtead from the developmentfunds available and our new £2M station? Notto mention Localism – will the Bill becomeLaw by the end of the year?

Again, if any of these topics stimulate yourinterest or you have your own ideas forimproving Ashtead why not contact us?

Surrey County Council Bus ReviewA review of buses in our area is taking placebetween 1st November and 31st January.

For the 479 service, the main bus that servesAshtead, there are no thoughts to makemajor changes but there is a possibility it

could run later than the present 6pm andhave a Sunday service where there is none atpresent. If either of these proposals wouldbenefit you, let Surrey know.

There are other suggestions that existing busroutes could be extended to include the A24between Epsom, Ashtead and Leatherhead. Ifyou live in the Stag Leys area or the newParsons Mead development, would you findthis convenient? Again let Surrey know.

Booklets containing the proposals and aquestionnaire can be picked up at the Libraryor you can ring 03456 099099 and one will beposted to you. For those ‘on-line’ go to theARA’s web site and follow the links there.

SCC needs to know your thoughts so take thisopportunity to contact them and helpimprove our bus service.

Late Night Shopping in AshteadThis successful annual event takes place onTuesday 6th December from 4pm to 8pm. TheARA values our “village” character and iscommitted to support all shops and traders inAshtead. Come along and enjoy theatmosphere (see right for details).

A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year toyou all.

As I write this report of the Association’sactivities , the weather has changed , the leaves arefalling and cold windy gusts of rain together with thesudden shortening of the days makes those balmyOctober days a far-off memory. And yet these havebeen busy days for the Association in conjunction withour partners in Ashtead, Fetcham and Bookham. ThePlanning Application for the development of CherkleyCourt has now been made to the Council. Many of ushave attended consultations with the developers, andwe can see the results of popular opinion in the wayin which the scheme has been developed. Our visitsto Cherkley House have been inspiring and fascinatingeven for non-golfers there is much to be seen withinthe house, including the views from it. On the otherhand the scheme runs directly against the Local Plan.Such plans take years to produce. Indeed no sooner isone finally confirmed, than the work starts on thenext version. This Plan which has been developedthrough numerous consultations with hundreds ofpeople, is not to be put aside easily. And yet theapplicants have made great efforts to skip around thereservations of the Planners and contributoryorganisations. But what if the venture fails, or is soldon to someone who does not honour the terms andspirit of the permission? What safeguards andconditions can the Council impose? Well I am gladthat I don’t have to make the decision! However theAssociation is expected to give its views to theDevelopment Control Committee. And so will theother Residents’ Associations (RAs), which I am surethat we all shall do.

However there is more to life than a golfcourse, for some us at least. The Chairmen of thefour RAs were invited to a meeting with the Council’sportfolio holder for the Council’s properties. Wewere told that there was much concern over theCouncil offices at Pippbrook in Dorking. The presentbuilding is a fine sight from the outside, but not all is

satisfactory within. Its large single glazed windowslose a lot of heat, and the multitude of floor levelsprovides many difficulties for movement within. However the building is now almost twice as large asit need be – even with the Police moving in from theirStation in Moore Street. The Council has, of course, lost most of its housing staff, and the use ofcomputers has generally reduced the size of thelabour force. So renovation of the building to modernstandards will be an expensive job, and still leave anexcess of floorspace. Clearly there is a case for a newoffice building, and if sited elsewhere on the site, itsconstruction need not impinge on the existing officesuntil it is complete. This leaves the opportunity toopen up the site within its Planning designation formunicipal and recreational use. However we felt thatthat is more a matter for Dorking as they will have tolive with it more thus northerly folk.

I need hardly say that these issues havelead to much emailing between the Chairmen andtheir committees. Without computers we would havehad to convene a number of meetings – then thedifficulties of getting everyone in one place at thesame time. Computers have their uses so long as youdo not become a slave to them. Now the LeatherheadResidents Association has a presence on Facebook, and I am told, on Twitter. But I really don’tunderstand it all now. It’s a long time since I built myfirst computer from a kit – three days of soldering upcircuit boards with all the individual components, andthen struggling with machine code to give some life tothis over heating box of tricks. I took the cover off tohelp cool it, then accidentally dropped a paperclipinto it. It took more than 3 days to diagnose all theblown components and damaged wiring. But I learnta lot!

Surrey Police launch campaign toreduce burglaries during the winter months

Surrey Police has launched a campaign aimed at helping thecounty’s homeowners avoid becoming victims of burglary during thewinter months. The county sees around a 33% increase in domesticburglaries between the months of October and December when theclocks go back and the evenings get darker.

The campaign, titled “Burglars take more than you think - Don’tmake it easy for them”, includes a short film and radio advertsurging the public to protect their homes and possessions and not tomake life easy for burglars.

The campaign has a step by step guide for the viewer on how theycan protect their homes and possessions as we see how the youngman gained entry.

• Always lock back gates.• Don’t leave valuables on view• Never leave keys hidden outside• Always set your burglar alarm

This campaign follows on from Surrey Police and Crimestoppers coming together to launch “Cashfor information” to encourage the public to pass on information anonymously about burglars andthe handling of stolen goods in return for a financial reward if an arrest and charge is made.Temporary Detective Superintendent Maria Woodall said “As the clocks go back and it starts to getdarker earlier, the number of break-ins goes up. It is known that burglars often target propertiesthat appear to be unoccupied and therefore making sure your home looks and feels like someoneis at home can be all that is needed to keep your belongings safe.

“Simple crime prevention measures can really make all the difference, such as leaving a few lightson and not having valuables in view from a window. The majority of burglars are opportunists, andif they have to make a lot of noise, spend a lot of time, or risk being seen, they are likely to goelsewhere”

Surrey Police is giving the following advice to help residents avoid becoming a victim of burglaryas the winter months rapidly approach:

• Light up your house – inside and outside. If you are out or away, use timer switches to turninternal lights on and off.

• Make sure your doors are securely locked at all times.• Close and lock all windows – burglars can wiggle through any gap larger than a human head.• Fit locks at the top and bottom of patio doors.• A visible burglar alarm will make a burglar think twice. Make sure you set your alarm every

time you leave your house.• Never leave garages or sheds unlocked.• Fit and lock gates across side and back entrances.• Be alert to strangers loitering in the street, If you don’t recognise them and they are acting

suspiciously, call the police.• Don’t hide your keys under a mat or a flowerpot – it’s the first place a burglar will look.• Keep an inventory of your valuable property, either on paper or online with a company such

as www.immobilise.com.• Use a property marking product to uniquely mark valuable possessions. For more

information visit www.securedbydesign.com.• Beware of bogus callers. Use a door chain and check the callers identity carefully. If in

doubt, keep them out.• And finally, if a burglar does get into your home handbags, wallets and car keys are rich

pickings so never leave these items in view.

This Christmas was going to be different. Thisyear Ruth was going to be organised. She wasn'tgoing to panic buy gifts. She wasn't going toleave the wrapping until after the children hadgone to bed on Christmas Eve and, unlike lastyear, she was not going to forget the large box atthe top of the wardrobe full of presents that shehad bought in the summer sales.

Ruth found a book in her local charity shop whichwould change her Christmas experience forever. The book was called "Your Perfect Christmas, theEasy Way". The picture on the cover showed abeautifully dressed woman with beautifullydressed children in front of a beautifully dressedChristmas Tree. In the background a ratherhandsome man, with a twinkle in his eye and aproud smile on his face was pouring a glass ofchampagne. Naïvely, Ruth didn't recognise thatshe was setting herself up for failure from theoutset.

The book described the preparation for Christmasmonth by month. As she only bought the book inNovember, Ruth had to skip through January toOctober and could feel a building level ofconcern that she was already behind in herpreparations. She ignored the sections aboutpreserving summer fruits in pretty jars, collectingshells and driftwood from summer holidays tocreate picture frames and making homemadelavender bags (using lavender that had beenlovingly grown in the garden). She also skippedthe section about making your own wrappingpaper, using potato printing. She had rolls androlls of the stuff up in the loft, unless the mice ordamp had got to them.

Ruth decided to focus on the food and thedecorations. They were having everyone over forChristmas lunch and she was determined to bethe perfect hostess. She could still hear hermother in law's comment last time she cooked."Isn't it amazing what you can get ready madethese days..."

The book had some wonderful ideas for food thatcould be prepared in advance and then frozenuntil needed. The recipes seemed quitecomplicated but sounded delicious so Ruthstocked up on ingredients and got to work.

Over three rather stressful weekends Ruth madehomemade sausage rolls, little pastry nibbles, mince pies, brandy butter, Christmas biscuits, achocolate roulade, an apple pie, pork and sagestuffing and bread sauce. She also made beefbourguignon for the adults and shepherd's pie forthe children to eat on Boxing Day.

During this frenetic period of activity, the rest ofthe family lived on pizza and sandwiches. ByDecember the 14th, Ruth felt that she was ready. The turkey had been ordered and the only lastminute thing she would have to buy were thevegetables.

She now turned to the section on decorations. This endeavour wasn't quite so successful. Shetried to involve the children (as instructed bychapter eleven of "Your Perfect Christmas, theEasy Way"). She wanted to make tinsel hangingcrowns and fresh cinnamon scented wreathes butBen and Daniel refused to participate at all andSarah spilt glue on the living room carpet. Thingsdidn't improve when Ruth's husband Sam was sentoff to get cinnamon sticks and floristry wire andcame back with vanilla pods, a jar of powderedallspice and a roll of insulating tape...

On December the 15th, Sam and Ruth had someneighbours round for drinks. Ruth served herdelicious pastry nibbles, the children were wellbehaved and the house looked beautiful, despitethe asymmetrical positioning of the living roomrug in order to cover the 'glued' area of carpet. On December the 16th, they went to the schoolcarol service and a couple of families came backfor mince pies. The children wanted ice creamso Ruth sent Sarah off to the freezer in thegarage to fetch it.

Sarah came back with a slightly confusedexpression. "Is ice cream meant to be this runny? The freezer door was open by the way, so I shutit for you, Mummy, because I know how hardyou've been working on all that stuff forChristmas..."

It was never discovered who left the freezer doorajar. No one owned up to the crime. Over thenext few days, the family were treated to beefbourguignon with bread sauce, Shepherd's piewith delicious pork and sage stuffing andchocolate roulade with brandy butter. Nothingmore was said.

The Surrey Branch of the Campaign toProtect Rural England (CPRE) has welcomedthe prospect of a widening of the boundariesof the Surrey Hills Area of OutstandingNatural Beauty (AONB) which would bringmore of Surrey’s countryside within theprotected area.

Natural England, the official body thatadvises the Government on protectedlandscapes such as Areas of OutstandingNatural Beauty and National Parks, haswritten to the Board of the Surrey Hills AONBindicating that it wishes to begin preliminarywork on boundary changes. This is inresponse to representations by the SurreyHills Board and its partner organisations onexpanding the AONB’s boundaries.

Sites that this could affect include CherkleyCourt near Leatherhead – the former estateof Lord Beaverbrook, currently subject to adevelopment proposal for a golf course, hoteland leisure complex – as well as theChipstead Valley in the northeast of thecounty, and open countryside adjacent toDunsfold in the south of Surrey where therehave been proposals for a new town and forexpansion of a commercial airfield.

The Surrey Hills Board and CPRE have beenpressing Natural England for an expansion ofthe Surrey Hills AONB for some years, and theCPRE has undertaken detailed research intothe subject, including commissioning anindependent study of locations adjacent to

the existing AONB which it believes could bebrought within in. Surrey County Council hasdesignated some of this countryside aroundthe AONB as an Area of Great LandscapeValue (AGLV) and it is CPRE’s view that theAGLV should become part of the legallyprotected countryside in the AONB.

Andy Smith, Surrey Branch Director of CPRE,said: “We are delighted to hear that NaturalEngland are prepared to look at the case fora widening of the boundaries of the SurreyHills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty andthat initial work is to take place to assesswhere the boundaries could be widened. These are important first steps towardsgreater protection for a large part of Surrey’scountryside. At a time when developmentpressures are growing and Surrey’s greenspaces are under constant threat of beingconcreted over, I believe that an expandedAONB is absolutely vital in the protection ofour precious countryside.”

Michael Sydney, Chairman of the Surrey HillsBoard, added: “The Surrey Hills Boardwelcomes this commitment from NaturalEngland, and the support of CPRE. One of thegreat strengths of the Surrey Hills AONB isthe beauty of the view when looking out fromit to its surrounding landscape, much ofwhich is within the AGLV. It is vital toprotect this quality which can only be done ifit is incorporated into the original body ofthe AONB.”

Countryside campaigners welcome first stepstowards enlargement of Surrey Hills AONB

From all of us at the Youth Centre, wewould like to wish you all a very happyChristmas and a great new year tocome.

I am sure that for many of us the lasttwelve months have been a challengeand this has been no different at theYouth Centre. We are now at the end ofa significant period of organisationalredesign and we will soon know if thereare any staffing changes to take placeand who our new managing organisationwill be. We are hopeful that any changeswill not have a discernable impact onour delivery. It is possible that thechanges will enable us to provide evenmore than we do already.

Whilst all this has been going on it isbusiness as usual of course. In additionto our usual programme we have workedon a number short projects in the lastterm. One is discussed by Grant in thenext column, another is the redesign ofour computer area - with financialsupport from Ashtead Rotary andExxonMobil we have been able to workwith a group of young people tocompletely update our IT area with afresh new look and replace the worn outfurniture and IT kit. The young peoplehave chosen the theme, colour scheme, and painted the new area themselves. The last is a senior member trainingprogramme being delivered by Gary,(the Ashtead Churches Community Trustworker) this programme trains 15-16year olds to develop their leadershipskills by working with others. Youngpeople giving something back is a themewe promote a great deal at the Centreand many are involved in the Karting orhelp work with the younger age group.

Looking to the future, we are in the veryearly stages of looking at the viability oftaking a group of young people to Kenya

with a view to teach in the local schooland spend time with children in a carehome. Whilst the enormity of such a tripshould never be underestimated, ourexperience in India has shown us howyoung people grow and develop throughsuch a process and we would like tomake this work part of the ongoingprogramme that we offer.

Richard Leary – Worker in Charge,Ashtead Youth [email protected] 276912

What our young people think...Hi there, my name is Grant (aged 16)and I have been coming to the youthcentre for a couple of years now.

I have recently been involved in aproject that has included a group ofmoped riders, the youth workers, andlocal Police. There have been quite fewcomplaints about people riding mopedswhich has created a lot of attentiontowards riders by Police Officers. Ameeting was arranged by the youthworkers to get together the mopedriders and the police to help peopleunderstand each others viewpoint. ThePolice were able to explain how theywere required to respond to peoplesconcerns about noise and safety, andthe riders were able explain how themechanics of the bikes mean they canbe noisy (particularly when you pullaway) and that the riders are notintending to upset anybody.

What I think most people probably don’trealise is that we haven’t bought thesebikes as toys, for almost everybody inthe group we rely on the bikes to get usto college and to work, and they are abig part of moving on in life by us beingmore independent as we make thatchange into the adult world.

October 13th was declared as Lions'International World Sight Day. The purposewas to make the public aware of the needsof blind people walking in the area, and alsoto persuade people of the importance ofearly detection of problems with their sight.

Cllr Bridget Lewis-Carr, Chairman of theMole Valley District Council, very kindly(and bravely) agreed to be ourrepresentative, and, blindfolded, shewalked around Leatherhead High Street, visiting various establishments. She wasassisted by Joy Stone, a visually impairedlady, and her dog Lomax (though a couple of

able Lionsstood by foremergencies).

After a difficultwalk from theLeatherheadTheatre downthe HighStreet, duringwhich Bridget

became disorientated and had difficultyavoiding pillars and lampposts, we visitedPatricia Morgan, Optician, where we wereintroduced to some of the many eyeproblems that can effect us, often, but farfrom always, when getting older, includingmacular degeneration, glaucoma, tunnelvision and diabetic damage.

A further walk, avoiding some badly placedpillars and finding narrow paths, brought us

to the LeatherheadMuseum, where Bridgetand Jane identifiedobjects by "Sensorytest", including domesticitems - a clothes "dolly"and solid iron flat iron.

After a cup of tea at theTheatre Café - very easy to knock over orscald one's fingers - the final activity was acycle ride, still blindfolded. Not, of course, alone, but on a tandem from SeeAbility, with Ian Jobson, an expert at the exercise, providing control from the front saddle. At

first Bridgetfound itterrifying, butwhen sherealised howcapable herdriver was sherelaxed and(almost)

enjoyed it. In the interview, after theevent, with Talking Newspapers she praisedSeeAbility highly for providing a servicewhich gave visually impaired people thechance to get out in the air and enjoy somefreedom.

Lion Mike Rushby, PR Officer and organiserof the event said ‘I was very pleased thatthe Chairman was able to take part and thewalk underlined the difficulties that blindpeople face when walking around town.We should all take note as sighted people ofthese problems and hopefully this exercisehas shown to people that they must be morehelpful and supportive to the partiallysighted or blind’.

My wife, Sue and I are both retired full-timeprofessional classical musicians. During all thoseyears we were acutely aware of the incrediblypositive effect that music can have on youngchildren. I started my career as an orchestralmusician in 1965 but for the last seventeenyears I stopped playing to concentrate on abusiness based in Dorking that I created someyears before called The Musician’s AnsweringService (MAS), a diary service for freelanceclassical musicians. However in 2010 I retiredfrom MAS as Managing Director in order topursue my long standing dream of starting acharity to help disadvantaged children discoverthe magic of music.

The aim of Pan Concerts is threefold.

1. To inspire children through motivationalconcerts especially in schools for childrenwith learning difficulties and those in areasof multiple deprivation.

2. To help children who want to learn find aninstrument and even arrange a loan at nocost to them.

As with many traditions, there is usually a storyof how a custom came about. Some soundplausible and some less so. But they almostalways have a nostalgic tale behind them andnever more so than at Christmas time.

Hanging a stocking by the fireA long time ago there lived a man who hadthree daughters. His wife had died some yearsearlier and now his daughters were of an age tobe married. However, at that time in history, the prospective husband’s family would expectto receive a dowry – gifts and money – whentheir son married. The man was very poor andsimply could not afford to do this.

Each night his girls would wash and mend theirclothes. To enable their stockings to dry theywould hang them near the fire.

A wealthy man called Nicholas, who lived in thevillage, had heard of the girls’ plight and onenight called by the house after dark. Seeing anopen window he sneaked in and put a bag ofgold coins in each of the stockings. When thevillagers heard of the widower’s good fortune, they too started hanging stockings by theirfireplaces.

Because the stockings were by the fire this leadto the belief that Santa came down the chimneyin order to deliver his gifts.

Nicholas did many more secret good deeds – hereally was the original benevolent St Nicholas.

Christmas CrackersNo Christmas dinner table would be completewithout Christmas crackers, and the hats, small

gifts and bad jokes are very muchpart of the tradition. The crackerswere believed to have beeninvented in around 1850 in London,by a sweet maker called Tom Smith. He was often trying to think of newways to market his sweets andsitting by his fire one night, hethought it would be a good idea ifthey could make a similar crackle toa burning log as the sweet wrapperwas pulled in half. The idea caughton although rather too well as rivalmanufacturers soon sprang up. TomSmith’s son, Walter, came up withthe idea of including other itemsand offering different designs as away of differentiating his productfrom those of his competitors.

Christmas PuddingsChristmas Pudding’s history isnot as a dessert at all, but asa savoury meat based dish. InMedieval times all surpluslivestock were slaughtered inthe autumn so that they didnot have to be fed over thewinter. The meat had to bepreserved however and apottage was prepared in alarge cauldron, theingredients being slow

cooked, with dried fruits, sugar and spicesadded. It is more likely that the dish was calledplum pottage or plum porridge, the driedversion of plums being prunes.

As meat preserving techniques improved, thesavoury element of the dish decreased, althoughof course if suet is used a small element of meatmay still be included. It was not until the 1830showever that the cannon-ball of flour, fruits, suet, sugar and spices, all topped with holly, made a definite appearance, becoming moreand more associated with Christmas.

It is said that the pudding should be made withthirteen ingredients to represent Jesus and HisDisciples and that every member of the familyshould take turns to stir the pudding with awooden spoon from east to west, in honour ofthe Wise Men.

The best tradition of all of course is to spendtime with your family, and that needs noexplanation.

Rotary Club of Ashtead donating to good causesFollowing record funds being raised at Ashtead Village Day back in June, theRotary Club has been busy allocating donations to causes with a localconnection. Examples of recent donations around Ashtead and Leatherheadinclude £250 to the Mid Surrey Dementia Care Trust, £850 to AFASIC, £500for special equipment for Woodlands School, £1000 towards the kitchen areaat the Ashtead Youth Centre, £1000 to MERU who manufacture specialistequipment for severely disabled youngsters. A major emphasis of Rotary’swork is with young people, offering Youth leadership and similar awards, listening to children’s reading at school and a ‘Kids Out’ outing toChessington for deserving children each Summer. A seniors Christmas event is planned for 9th

Internationally, examples of the work in developing nations include the Infant Club Foot Appeal, led by local doctor Charlotte Hawkins which has been given a further £1750 to support the work inhelping children in Zanzibar with a low life expectancy if untreated. Former Therfield Schoolteacher Liz Noble spends her Summer holidays in Kenya with the charity RUSH which providesbasic medical and educational help to an impoverished community - £500. The tragic floods inPakistan earlier this year caused the Club to fund “Water Survival Boxes” to a value of £1200enabling clean drinking water to be obtained. The fight to end polio worldwide is so close tocompletion and a further £500 has been donated. All this has been made possible by thegenerosity of people locally.

Winter Ball at the Duchess’s stand at Epsom Racecourse

Following the success of the Winter Ball last December when £7000 was raised for ‘HelpFor Heroes’, Ashtead Conservatives have launched the Ball again this year and it willtake place on Saturday 10th December. It was seen to bring everyone in the Villagetogether for some fun and was judged a great success albeit narrowly avoiding beinginterrupted by heavy snowfall.

This year the charitable beneficiaries are threefold: firstly The Soldiers Sailors andAirmen Families Association (SSAFA) which has a house in Ashtead for the use ofrelatives visiting severely injured service personnel at Headley Court. The second isAshtead Football Club which offers so many opportunities for young people to playsport and strive to succeed. Finally Ashtead Cricket Club which through its cadetprogramme gives young people from schools which no longer have cricket facilities thechance to learn the game and shine - in many cases raising them to County level.

So what will we find at The Ball? – a welcoming glass of champagne on arrival at theDuchess’s Stand, a delicious three course dining experience in a beautifully decoratedroom (a theme of ‘Fire and Ice’) access to the Stand offering panoramic views over theDowns and the finishing line and dancing to a fabulous new band this year -“Lovetrain”. Finally, some fun with a raffle and an auction of some exciting items.

Paul Carrack comes to Dorking halls

I recently interviewed Paul Carrack, who is coming to Dorking Halls on 1st December. Paulhas had an interesting and wide-ranging career in music, this is what he said:

Paul, you’ve obviously hada wonderful and variedcareer in music going rightback to the 70s playingwith bands such as WarmDust and Roxy Music, thenthrough the years playingwith Squeeze, Mike & TheMechanics, ThePretenders, The Smithsand bands such as theEagles recording some ofyour songs. I alsounderstand you were asession musician appearingon records by Ringo Starr,

Elton John, Eric Clapton and BB King, as well as working on a solid solocareer. Throughout these years, what were the high points for you?One you haven’t mentioned is ACE which was my first claim to fame as I wrote and sang thebands first and only hit HOW LONG. After years of eeking out a hand to mouth existence itwas very exciting to get a peek at the 'inside'. The song was a big hit in America and inthose austere days of the mid 70's, visiting the States was like landing on the moon.

You have an album out called ‘I know that name’ featuring your own original songs (barone cover version). Where did you get the inspiration for the soulful music on the albumand for you as a writer acquiring a talent for writing such engaging music with more thana passing nod to the r&b of the deep south , as I understand your roots are in Sheffield? My main influence, musically, has always been the soul sound of the 60's. In my teens Iplayed in a Sheffield soul band. In fact that was why I made the switch from playing drumsto teaching myself organ. I wasn't singing then, apart from backing vocals, but I wasinspired by all the great vocalists of the time Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and David Ruffinto name a few.

On your album ‘A different hat’ you feature the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra as yourbacking musicians, which is a very exciting concept and a move away from your previousmusical background. Can you tell me what that was like to work with the RPO and howthis differed from working with rock-based bands?Well the whole album was recorded in three x four hour sessions. At the end of a 4 hoursession we would have 4 complete tracks because the orchestra play impeccably from thevery first note. I've known bands take longer than that to get a snare drum sound. The levelof professionalism was very humbling.

Finally, what are your future plans with regard to your music, are you looking at workingwith orchestras, rock bands or is your heart really in writing and performing your ownwork?Since the diversion of 'A Different Hat' I have returned to my normal brand of pop/soul witha refreshed enthusiasm. I dont really have any big ambitions left other than to enjoy mymusic as much as possible and hopefully share that enjoyment with my 'fans'

Paul Carrack is currently on tour throughout the UK and will be performing at DorkingHalls on Thursday 1st December, call the box office to book your seats. 01306 881717

A Merry Christmas to you all! Another year hassped by and The Big Day will soon be here. It’sa lovely time of year, a time for familygatherings, catching up with friends, singingtraditional carols, maybe a little mulled wineand a few mince pies…and a good excuse forgeneral over-indulgence! We can recycle

last years debate about which is the greenestoption – real or imitation Christmas tree, pros and

cons for both options, answers on a postcard please…(We have a real one that spends the summer in a bigpot on the patio).

Christmas can be a time when we generate loads ofrubbish and waste. Apparently, in the UK each one ofus generates 466kgs of household waste per year(DEFRA 2009/10 figures), about a third of which is recycled. So a family of 4 would create a pile ofwaste weighing about 2 tons! I wonder if a big chunk of it is generated over Christmas? There’s thewrapping paper, the gift packaging, the unwanted or duplicate gifts, the left-overs that go off beforethey get eaten… What can we do to cut it down?

There has been pressure on retailers to reduce packaging and some have obliged and as consumers, wedo have the option to boycott over-packaged items. As a nation, we are gradually increasing theamount we recycle, but prevention is usually better than cure and avoiding creating piles of rubbish inthe first place seems a better plan. How many times do you get something home and immediately

remove and discard the wrapping? Plastics arecommonly used for packaging and can last for agesin the environment and often end up in the ocean -a nice little film illustrating this is atwww.anitasancha.co.uk/videos/the-plastic-planet/

How much can we cut down on food waste? Whenyou see the heaped trolleys in the supermarkets, itdoes seem incredible that it will all get eaten…Dowe need to buy so much? Maybe you can freeze left-overs for use later - you may really fancy a turkeycurry at the end of January!

Once the festivities are over, I often find a fewextra pounds lurking around my midriff, probably

due to my weakness for Christmas pudding. I have a top tip for you about how to loose that “Christmaspud” feeling – it’s a very simple diet, with no calorie counting, no adding up points, no feeling starving.Basically, it’s the “no packaging” diet. If it comes in a box or packet, even one with “low fat” writtenon it, don’t eat it! The theory is that if you eat processed food (and all processed food is packaged!), itwill have hidden salt, sugar, fat, E numbers and provide little fibre and few vitamins. “Cooking fromfresh” ie starting with vegetables, meat, fish, pulses etc will create a meals that will be lower incalories, higher in nutrients and reduce the packaging in your dustbin…a great way to begin the newyear.

When Fetcham ParkHouse came up for salein the early 1920s, itcame to the attention ofRev. J. G. Wilkie and anew chapter in itshistory would begin.

Wilkie initially was amaster at St Paul’sSchool but after takingHoly Orders becameRector of Badingham inSuffolk and started aCollege in the grounds ofthe rectory in 1922 thatoutgrew the available

space. A Badingham College brochure records that the move from Badingham to Fetcham took placein July 1927 but there must have been work undertaken prior to this to adapt the buildings etc, to formand equip the school and dormitories but the actual conveyance was not until the 3rd April 1928. Apartfrom the house and 30 acres of land he also bought two further plots that formed the adjacent cornerof the Ridgeway and Lower Road, all for £8000.

Prior to 1939, it appears that the College was recognised as a coaching establishment for the first M.B.and thus almost certainly known to the Medical Science faculty of University College London whohaving had their buildings requisitioned initially by the War Office in 1939, then got them back only tohave them severely damaged by bombing in 1940. They took a lease on Badingham College and theDepartments of Anatomy and Physiology and the associated departments moved to Fetcham in October1940. Meanwhile, Wilkie moved his College to Hullvington near Chippenham but about 1941 put theSchool into suspension and taught at Eton School before becoming vicar of Highmore in Oxfordshirewhere he continued to take pupils.

University College remained at Fetcham to the end of the 1944/45 sessions. In 1946 Middlesex CountyCouncil sought compulsory purchase of the property for use of the “educationally sub-normal”.However this apparently failed and later that year, Rev. Wilkie restated Badingham College and byabout 1950 had a staff of 10 or 11 for 70 boys at 80 guineas (£84) per term. A legacy of UniversityCollege’s occupation was the “well equipped laboratories (that) have now been added”. By about1957, the school had 14 masters, a matron and assistant, a catering manageress and an entirelySpanish domestic staff for a compliment of 100 boys at 120 guineas (£126) a term. Rev. Wilkie juniorsucceeded Wilkie senior and about 1962 there appears to be thoughts of selling. It was eventually soldand in 1965 the College was moved from Fetcham to Ketteringham Hall, Wymondham near Norwich. This act proved to be a mistake and the school closed permanently in 1968.

MOLE VALLEY POLICE COLUMNThe safety and security of ourselves and ourhomes should be a year round concern but, around Christmas and the Festive Season ingeneral, many of us are out and about -travelling to and from events, parties andvisiting friends and family. This can alsomean that we are leaving our homesunoccupied for periods of time.

In terms of home security, please rememberto consider that opportunist burglars willlook for premises where access is the easiestand where it appears that they may besomething valuable to steal. AroundChristmas, many of us buy presents for ourfamilies and friends. Please consider howthey are stored in your home and try not tomake it too obvious that there are “richpickings” to be had. No one would suggestthat you cannot decorate your home as youplease and, around Christmas time, manypeople like to put presents around a tree, often in full display from a front window. Please consider making sure that access toyour home is protected with suitable lockson doors and windows. If you have an alarmsystem, please use it.

Putting some downstairs lights to come onwith a timer switch can be a good idea. Wedo not recommend having a landing lightcome on with the ground floor in darkness asthis does not convince anyone that thepremises is occupied. A low level hall lighton a timer would be a much better option.

Once presents are unwrapped, consider howyou dispose of wrapping and packaging ofexpensive items. Leaving them outside forthe next collection can show a potentialburglar that there is something inside thehouse worth taking.

When out and about, everyone should alsoconsider the serious issue of drinking alcoholand driving.

Surrey Police officers enforce the “drink-drive” law every day. We are aware,

however, that this time of year can presentincreased problems and our officers will betargeting those who are irresponsibleenough to drink and drive, not only puttingtheir own lives at risk but also the lives oftheir passengers, other road users andpedestrians.

Although there is a “legal limit” of alcoholfor driving in the UK, it is well recognisedthat any amount in your body when youdrive will affect your ability to react. Otherfactors, such as tiredness, medications andstress can also slow down your reactiontimes. Mix any of these factors with alcoholand you could be under the influence of apotentially lethal cocktail.

It is for these reasons that we want tohighlight the vital importance of protectingyourself and others at this time of year byplanning alternative and safe ways ofgetting around if you are planning to have adrink. Consider using public transport, booking a taxi or asking a non-drinkingfriend or relative to drive or, at least, collect you. You can always offer to returnthe favour!

Surrey Police officers have a duty of care toenforce the law and to protect the publicand part of this is to take robust actionagainst anyone found to be driving whilstunder the influence of alcohol or drugs.

A Real ProperChristmas TreeBy Pippa Greenwood

I have to admit it: I LOVEChristmas… and if there is one partof it I’d hate to do without, it’s aChristmas tree. No, I don’t mean atinsley one or trendy black orbrown one… I mean a treecomplete with needles and ideallythat wonderful aroma that only areal, proper Christmas tree canbring.

If you’re worried that real trees arenot good for the planet, don’tforget that a tree is most definitelynot an ecological disaster zone – ifyou think about it, they’re a cropplant rather like a field of wheatexcept that they are generally given less fertiliserand fewer chemicals than many more run of themill crop plants. So go on, make sure you buy onethis Christmas!

There are a few things you ought to think aboutbefore you buy your tree, faced with rows ofdifferent types at often very varying prices. It canbe really daunting, so have a read of my guide toreal Christmas trees:

The Norway spruce (Picea abies) is thetraditional tree, my favourite but perhaps not afavourite if you are more house proud. It hasgorgeous dark green pointed needles and thatunmistakable aroma but sadly it is the most likelyto drop its needles. Having said that, if you treatit well, it won’t perform that badly and you canenjoy the lowest cost of the real trees.

The Scots pine is now a regular option as aChristmas tree, with its long paired blue-greenneedles it’s quite distinctive. The needles arefairly densely packed on the branches and theyalso hold quite well.

The Serbian Spruce (Picea omorica) has longbeen the favourite festive tree in central Europe,as it’s good looking and has good needle holding…but of course no Christmas-tree smell!

The Nordman fir (Abies nordmanniana) hasbecome increasingly popular in recent years, withits shiny green needles being almost impossible toshift, so certainly a good choice for those whohate any mess.

The Fraser fir (Abies fraseri) is less regularlyavailable, but the combination of its good looksand needle holding capacity make it well worthconsidering.

So, you’ve been persuaded to take the plunge, Ihope? But how do you make sure you buy the besttree of the type you’ve decided on? And how doyou help it keep its needles and its gorgeousappearance for as long as possible? It’s importantnot to buy a real tree too early as the longer theyhang around after they’ve been cut, the morelikely they are to go downhill. Take a bit of timeto choose the tree – check that it has a good, fullshape and that its not too gappy or lop-sided (orif it has the leans make sure that this will behidden when the tree is in your house). Check theneedles - they need to be glossy (for thosevarieties where this is a characteristic) and thecorrect colour for the type of tree you’ve chosen. They also need to be free from pests and diseases- basically anything yellowed or inclined to shed,or with white fluffy bits should be avoided at allcosts. Never buy a tree that has already beennetted as this makes it a real lucky dip situation.

If you do buy one quite early then the mostimportant thing is to keep it outside - just re-cutthe end of the trunk (yes, its time to dig out yourDIY saw) and put the tree in a bucket of water ina sheltered spot outside. If it was in a net whenyou bought it, remove this as it’s important tohave air circulating around the needles.

When you bring the tree inside, try to avoid

Page 89: The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local

89

House & Gardenputting it anywhere too warm or close to a heatsource and make sure that you use a stand with awater reservoir with water levels really welltopped up – if kept well supplied with water theneven the notorious (but lovely) Norway spruceChristmas tree should hold its needles well.

When Christmas is over and it’s time for the treeto come down, complete the green-loop andmake sure you recycle it – they’re not the easiestthing to recycle or compost at home, but MoleValley Council has several sites where you canrecycle your Christmas trees from 2nd January, see page 20 for details.

Beat the Cold

With weather forecasters warning that the UKmay suffer from the coldest Winter in decadesthe Royal Horticultural Society is advisinggardeners to get prepared.

“Admittedly it is difficult to predict the longterm weather forecast but when it comes togardening there’s no harm in preparing for theworst and now is the time to do it,” says RHSHorticultural Advisor Nicola Bristow. “A littleplanning and preparation will help ensureplants survive the deepest snowfall or hardestof frosts. Believe it or not cold Winters canactually be good for gardens as warm Wintersmay prevent the protective deep dormancy inmany trees and shrubs. If this happens itincreases their susceptibility to later frostsand scorch caused by cold winds.”

The RHS is suggesting five key things to do.

1. Their first suggestion is to putprotective wrapping around vulnerableplants. A wide variety of wrappingmaterial can be used such ashorticultural fleece or bubble wrap.

2. Mulching plants with compost in Octoberor early November is important as thisnatural covering will help prevent soil compaction and erosion that usually followsheavy rain.

3. Containers need to be kept in dry, sheltered areas and if at all possible moved againstwalls or fences. Grouping them together helps give additional protection.

4. Protection from wind is important and now is a good time to plant hedges and trees. However for immediate and additional protection woven hurdles and netting can alsobe used.

5. The fifth and final suggestion from the RHS is to use plant-friendly de-icing products onicy paths. The charity warns against the use of salt as this can burn plant leaves.

“If your favourite plant gets damaged over the Winter don’t give up on it too soon,” saysNicola. “We have found lots of plants in our gardens that looked totally dead in the Springbut suddenly burst into leaf and grew happily over the Summer. If it is a special plant it isworth waiting that little bit longer to see if new growth appears.”

Further hints and advice on how to protect plants andprepare for Winter are available to gardeners of allabilities when they join the RHS. The charity’s AdvisoryService responds to over 70,000 member enquiries everyyear. Gift memberships are available for those lookingfor that special Christmas gift for their gardeningfriends and family.
