A s I write this note we are getting ready to spend a couple of days in Bruges tocelebrate my birthday. I have it on very good authority that the national foods

of Belgium (other than beer and mussels of course) are chocolate and chips. Needlessto say I’m going to love Bruges, what’s not to like?

Ashtead Community Vision has established a forum to broadly represent thecommunity with regard to the government’s Localism Act, which was set up to enablecommunities to have a say in the development of their areas. Mole Valley’s housingtarget is to build over 2200 homes by 2026 which will require some difficult anduncomfortable decisions to be made over the coming years. ACV is holding an openday at Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall on Saturday 27th April. More details can be found on page 18.

On page 48 you will find an article submitted by The David Sheldrake Wildlife Trust reporting on theplight of hundreds of elephants and rhinos in Africa the worrying statistic that the African elephant willbe wiped out within 12 years if current poaching levels continue. This terrible statistic can be haltedwith your help.

2013 sees the first Leatherhead Food Festival and so many exciting events and demonstrations have beenorganised around the town on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th April, more info can be found on pages 42 and43. I can’t wait to pop along and see what’s on offer and also find out more about our local producers.

The lovely Becky over at Bocketts Farm Park informs me that they are expecting the arrival of over 300lambs in the next few weeks. It’s always one of the first signs of spring when we see little lambs out inthe fields gambolling and having fun.

Len Wood of Ashtead Rotary has updated us on all the fundraising and social activities held over the pastfew months, and by all accounts a very busy time was had by all,Len’s report appears on page 12.

Our beloved Leatherhead Museum will be opened for the seasonby the head of Mole Valley Council (Caroline Salmon) on Saturday6th April along with another special guest and an opportunity tofind out about a rather intriguing murder in Leatherhead back in1834, page 60.

Ashtead Park Garden Centre in Pleasure Pit Road have sometantalising offers for their Olive Tree Restaurant, the voucher canbe found on page 81.

Ashtead Cricket Club in Woodfield Lane are looking to recruit girlsinto their cricket teams. No experience is necessary and, whoknows, your little girl may have a real talent that is lyingundiscovered. All the details can be found on page 38.

For those of you taking part in the London Marathon on Sunday21st April, I can only imagine the amount of effort, training anddetermination you have put in over the past months. I shall bewatching it on the television with a bar of Galaxy chocolate forcompany and cheering you all on...

Annual General Meeting and Spring MeetingThe Annual General Meeting of the Ashtead Residents’Association is to be held on Tuesday 23rd April at theAshtead Peace Memorial Hall from 7.30pm-8pm.

The Spring Meeting will follow the AGM from 8pm until9pm. This year, we will have a presentation onLeatherhead Theatre from Tim Caffell, Chief Executiveof The Leatherhead Revival Trust, who will talk about itsopening as the Thorndike Theatre in September 1969.Princess Margaret formally opened the Theatre and thiswas a true night of celebration for Leatherhead, thecommunity and the arts! This recently Grade II listedbuilding was truly innovative in its time and even wonan award from the Royal Institute of British Architectsfor its design.

We hope very much to see as many residents as possibleattending what promises to be a very interestingpresentation.

Allotments in Barnett Wood LaneMuch has been made in the local press about thepotential plans for the area of land near theLeatherhead ByPass and the effect this would have onthe allotments. Are you affected by these plans whetheras an allotment holder or a property owner in nearbyroads? Rumours are rife and unsubstantiated that thiswill be a retail park, huge hotel complex or housing. Wehave even heard scare-mongering rumours of anotherBluewater! In truth, nothing is yet certain and will notbe until the Council receive tenders from interesteddevelopers.

The Green BeltThe Council are under pressure to find enough land for3,760 new homes in the period 2006 to 2026. Around1,500 from this total have already been built almostentrely within the District’s towns and larger villages.However Mole Valley still has to find further space foranother 2,200 homes, with some 450 coming fromAshtead. For this reason eyes are now looking at theGreen Belt. Previously sacrosanct, the Council is underpressure to find spaces for these extra homes and areasof the Green Belt are being reviewed.

Within Ashtead, the newly formed Ashtead CommunityVision will have the role of submitting a NeighbourhoodDevelopment Plan and within this plan the Forum will berequired to include a review of the Green Beltboundary. This is not to say the Green Belt will beaffected but the Neighbourhood Forum will be requiredto demonstrate that they have carried out a full andrigorous review of the Green Belt boundary and this willbe done in conjunction with regular consultation withAshtead residents.

It is our understanding that less than 1% of the GreenBelt would be affected by the review and as bothBookham and Ashtead will have the Forums in place, atleast we the residents will have a great say in what’sproposed, rather than it being imposed upon us from ‘onhigh’.

The Association is closely involved with our ownNeighbourhood Forum and many members, including anumber from the Standing Committee, are also on theForum. As plans are formulated, we will work inconcert with the Forum to ensure the involvement andinput of Ashtead’s residents.

As we approach April I think of a spring clean, financially of course,no-one can fail to have seen what has been happening to

deposit rates over the last few months, they have simplyfallen off a cliff ! And over the last few days there has

been a huge fuss at how one company who specialisesin representing the older generation has beencharging the earth to its existing insurancecustomers so:

• Dust off your cash Isa’s, are they sitting onrates that are insulting? Many of them are nowlanguishing at rates below 1% so even if you canget just a little more by moving them around itcould be worth it. We can do this on anindependent basis, of course we have our Agencywith the Yorkshire Building Society but will be

happy to survey the whole of the market for you.

• Has anyone looked at your Share Isa’s recently?It could be time to review them! We can do this at no

charge and if there is scope to update them to match yourrequirements then we can discuss how we can help (and how

much it would cost).

• When you get your household renewal instead of just paying as normal pop into the office andlet us have a look at the market for you. We may not be able to beat the lowest premiums onthe internet but we offer the personal service and the promise that we will review the costseach and every year - not just send you a bigger bill each time.

• Nearing retirement and do not know which route you want to take. We will be happy to giveyou some of our time for an initial chat about the options and then help you through thetransition and beyond.

• As always, for those of you who should have life cover and have not got round to it yet – weare here – you might be surprised at how little it costs compared to the security it gives.

The upside of the falling deposit rates is that the Mortgage Lenders are lowering their rates to newborrowers, so now may be the time to have a look at getting that re-mortgage. In many cases thelenders variable interest rates can be double those available.

Andy Smith, Surrey Branch Director of CPRE, willshare his knowledge of the Mole valley Green Belt,and green spaces.

Much of this brings a focus on the land on either sideof the M25, between Ashtead and Leatherhead. Thisis within the Green Belt, and is currently underreview. The Council has invited developers to putforward schemes for this site, with a view to sellingor leasing the land. But to make it large enough tobe attractive for a developer, they have suggestedthat the allotment gardens on the south side ofBarnett Wood Lane should be transferred to openland on the Ashtead side of the Motorway also in theGreen Belt, and to the north of the railway line. Forthe hundred or so allotment holders, most of whomwalk to their allotments from home, this isdevastating news.

How important is the Ashtead gap, particularly whenwe have the separation by the motorway? Are thegains of a development (details of which areunknown) sufficient to outweigh the benefits of theallotments and the loss of the open land? Should weeven consider the possible development whendeciding on the changes to the Green Belt? Pleasecome and share your thoughts, knowledge and ideas.Light refreshments will be available.

An Eventful YearAshtead's Rotary Club has been extremely active over the last few months organising outings forour senior citizens, Christmas Street Collections, supporting the Ashtead Traders' evening,joining Inner Wheel for their party to raise funds for 'Crisis at Christmas' and much else besides.

Here are a few more of our activities and the essentialsupport we have provided.

This year we donated £10,000 to Woodlands School to allowthem to buy a minibus which is adapted to carry their largestwheelchair but is small enough to allow use of a regulardriving licence. It has a modern low emissions engine so itcan be taken into London without penalty. We helped theiropen day by running the BBQ and one of our members, AlanHowell, took the part of Santa Claus. The youngsters thereso enjoyed meeting him.

Membership of the Rotary Club is not all hardgraft and serious obligation. A group of usmade a trip to London (pic right), organised bymember Achim Vogt, to celebrate theOktoberfest which is held in Munich every year.Traditional German beer and a meal of Wurst,Sauerkraut & Kartoffeln was served bywaitresses in their equally traditional dirndls allto the accompaniment of a guitar and accordiongroup.

As Christmas approached we organised ashowing of the film 'The Best ExoticMarigold Hotel' (Maggie Smith & JudyDench) for 60 or so of our SeniorCitizens and laid on an afternoon TeaParty with entertainment (see left).Our Street Collections in The Street,Craddocks Parade and Barnett WoodLane raised a little over £1600

At the time of writing the purplecrocuses are just coming intobloom on the corner next to ThePond (pictured right). These wereplanted by Rotary with the help ofchildren from Barnett Wood InfantsSchool to mark the final stages ofour campaign to rid the world of Polio . . . . . purple to symbolise the dye which is applied to afinger of an inoculated child so that none get missed and none are treated twice. Only threecountries now have the wild polio virus still endemic. Just £1 will fund the inoculation of 5vulnerable children.

On Sunday 23rd of June the Hawthorn Leslie 3837Preservation Society are to hold the first of whatwe hope will be many, BIG CHARITY FUNDRAISINGSHOWS in the Mole Barn at the LeatherheadLeisure Centre. All charities and other non profitmaking groups will be very welcome to hire a pitch(10 ft x 6 ft with a 6 ft x 2 ft table) for the day foronly £10! Also, if you are a fan of the good old carboot shows, you may be interested in hiring apitch for a bric-a-brac stall to bring in some extrahousekeeping or holiday money, you also onlyneed to pay £10! So, if you want to raise somemoney for your favourite charity, school, club ororganisation, just send an email to:[email protected] for details and anapplication form.

If you run a full or part time business and wouldlike to either sell or advertise your wares orservices, you will also be made very welcome. Atrade stall is £40 for the basic pitch but we cannegotiate with you if you want something larger.

We have contacted a vast number of charities todate to see if they would like a stall and quite afew of them have said that they would like tocome but are unable to do so due to the lack ofvolunteer staff. We would therefore like to askyou all, if you would like to join our ‘’HelpingHands’’ team to offer those charities quiteliterally ‘’a helping hand’’ to run their stalls,either for them, or alongside a regular member.We also require a few volunteers to help us on theday. So, if you are of a charitable nature, perhapsyou might like to offer your services by emailingBrian Davis on:- [email protected] .

All funds raised by the organising society will gotowards the full restoration of the old blue steamengine (see below) that once stood at the rear ofthe centre. Although we only paid the sum of £1for the engine, it will cost many thousands ofpounds to get it back in steam again. So, if youcan come along on June 23rd to raise some fundsfor yourselves, you will also be helping us to reachour goal! The engine can be viewed at Isfield onthe Lavender Line in East Sussex. The event is a little way off as yet but if youwould like to meet some of our team beforehand,we will have our show stand at the Surrey Societyof Model Engineers open day at Mill Lane,Leatherhead on Good Friday (29th March) and alsowe will be at Ashtead Village day event on 8thJune.

It’s time for people living and working inAshtead to take part in the first localcommunity survey.

The Localism Act enables communities tohave a greater say in the development oftheir neighbourhoods. Ashtead CommunityVision (ACV) has established a Forum of 40individuals who are broadly representativeof the community to produce a Neighbour-hood Development Plan (NDP). To do thatACV needs to provide information andconsult with the community, seeking theiropinions on how they would like the villageto develop in the next 15 years and createa vision for Ashtead.

The housing target is to build 2,260 homesby 2026 across Mole Valley. Ashtead’sshare is likely to be about 30-40 houses peryear for the next 15 years. Many newdwellings can go on ‘Brownfield’ sites, egland that has previously been developedwhich includes back garden ‘infilling’ andredevelopment, however that may notsatisfy the need and therefore MVDC isconducting a Green Belt Boundary Review(GBBR). Since Ashtead is producing its ownNDP, it can carry out its own Green BeltBoundary Review.

ACV not only has to consult with thecommunity, it also needs to informeveryone about the issues and look at theimpact of development. It has three subgroups ‘Housing’, ‘Business & Economy’and ‘Transport, Environment and

Infrastructure’. All the groups areinterconnected; for example if land that iscurrently used for business was designatedfor housing what impact would that haveon employment? Or if a large number ofnew homes were built in one area whatimpact would that have on the drains,roads or schools?

There will be a number of consultations;the first is an on-line survey in April. Thisfocuses predominately on WHAT thehousing need is for the next 15 years, andwhat type of housing is required. Forexample will you want a 2 bedroom house,flat, retirement home or bungalow? Whatdo you think gives Ashtead its specialcharacter - the large older houses, thecommon, or wide tree lined streets?WHERE should new developments go, andwhat about housing density etc?

For the Green Belt Boundary Review ACVneed to determine attitudes to the variousareas of green belt that surround Ashtead.Nine distinct areas have been identified;the questionnaire asks you to rate eachone on its use in preventing merging,encroachment, and its value as a greenamenity. There are no easy answers, but ifyou live or work in Ashtead ACV need youropinions. This was going to be an unusual EasterMonday.The joys of over consumption ofchocolate were to be combined with the joys ofApril Fools Day and the children were determinedto make the most of the coincidence, especiallyas their father was going to be at home.

Sam was the world’s biggest practical joker andApril Fool’s Day was one of the highlights of hisyear. His favourite hoax of all time was the 1957BBC clip, narrated by Richard Dimbleby wherethey filmed ‘spaghetti trees’. He showed it toBen, Daniel and Sarah when they were youngerand even spent an afternoon with them at thegarden centre, looking for young spaghetti treesto buy.

Another year he came home with a tattoo ofPopeye on his upper arm and managed toconvince Ruth that it was genuine for almost aweek.

The children loved and hated his tricks in equalmeasure and tried their hardest to retaliate.They put clingfilm over the loo seat, whoopeecushions on the chairs and fake dog poo on theliving room carpet. Ruth found it all completelyexhausting but enjoyed watching the childrenjoining forces to try and trick their Dad. Sheloved the expression on his face when they stucka folded diamond shaped piece of paper on thewallpaper in the hall. It really looked as though ithad been ripped and he was absolutely furious.Not as furious, however, as when he discoveredthe fake parking notice on his car.

This April Fool’s Day her husband would be athome and Ruth was nervous.

The fun started when Sam went out for hismorning jog. He took a water bottle from thefridge and left the house as usual. He was backhome after five minutes, soaking wet andseething. The children had put holes the waterbottle so that when he took off the lid and triedto drink, all the water poured out. He found awater pistol in the garage, filled it and went towake up his children…

Ruth wanted to cook a lovely Sunday breakfast.She took the eggs out of the fridge and tried tocrack one into the frying pan. It wouldn’t breakopen. Confused, she took a second one out of thebox. As she did so, she saw a little post it note,stuck on the inside of the lid. It read“Eggstremely hard to crack? April Fool!” Ruth hadto admire her husband’s ingenuity at being able tohard boil six eggs without her knowledge. Samwas still upstairs so Ruth took out another box of

eggs. She was about to fry them when she heardthe piercing squeals of her children through theceiling. She decided to abandon the idea of acooked breakfast and carefully put both boxesback into the fridge.

Sam and the children came downstairs, soakingwet but laughing. Sam announced that he’d loveto have a big Easter Monday brunch and suggestedfried eggs and bacon.

Ruth said that she really couldn’t be bothered tocook today after their big Easter Sunday lunch theday before and suggested that he take over. Samlooked disappointed and enthusiastically tried topersuade his wife to cook him some eggs but Ruthwas adamant. Sam then had an idea. He wouldcook, but first he would show them a specialability that he had.

He took the egg box out of the fridge and invitedhis family to sit down at the kitchen table. Heopened the box and checked inside. Sam thentook out an egg and dramatically held it aboveDaniel’s head. He dared Daniel to let him crack itopen but his son, quite understandably, refused.He then went round the table, repeating hischallenge to each child and then finally to hisquizzical wife. Everybody declined, in spite ofRuth’s strangely fervent assurances that it wouldbe an ‘eggcellent’ hair conditioner.

Sam took the egg, held it above his own head witha flourish and then slammed it down. Thechildren were speechless as they watched hisastonished face. The raw egg slowly andinevitably oozed through his curly brown hair anddribbled down his face. A large globule of yolkcasually made its way down his nose, collected atits tip before dropping soundlessly onto the tablein front of him.

Ruth tried to keep a straight face but theoverwhelming feeling of satisfaction and delightgot the better of her:“You should have written onthe box, instead of using a post it note. Post itnotes are so easy to move around… Happy AprilFool’s Day darling!”

Following on from January’s brutal slaughter of 12African Elephants in one single poaching attack inKenya, local wildlife charity The David SheldrickWildlife Trust (DSWT) strengthen their Anti-Poaching efforts and sent over 40,000 signatures toCITES as people around the world say NO to ivory.

Leatherhead based charity, the DSWT is best knownfor its work rescuing and raising orphaned elephantsand black rhinos in Kenya. However, as thenumbers of rescues continues to rise as a directresult of increased poaching in Kenya, the charitydecided that action on a global level was needed.With demand for ivory far exceeding supply, theDSWT created an online petition www.iworry.orgthat called on supporters to ‘Say No to the IvoryTrade.’

If left unchecked, current elephantpoaching levels would see the

African Elephant disappear in 12 years

Founder of the DSWT, Dame Daphne Sheldrick,explains “Elephants as a species aretoday facing very grave threats. Thedemand for ivory has escalated in theFar East, particularly in China wherethe populace is becoming moreopulent”.

“Despite claims, inadequate measuresare being taken internationally totackle the illegal sale of ivory aroundthe world. That’s why only with acomplete ban on the trade of all ivoryin any form will Africa’s Elephants begiven the chance to survive in thewild.”

To reach out to more supporters, thecampaign was also translated intoJapanese and Chinese/Mandarin and intotal garnered over 40,000 signatures

when it was presented toSecretary General of CITES, JohnScanlon on 13th March.

CITES (the Convention onInternational Trade in EndangeredSpecies of Wild Fauna and Flora) isan international agreement thatregulates international trade inwild animal and plant species.Delegates have been meeting thisMarch in Bangkok to discuss thefuture of many threatenedspecies, including the AfricanElephant.

The DSWT will continue to push fora total ban on ivory and as a direct

witness to the effects of elephant poaching withinthe region on a daily basis, the DSWT’s focusremains to provide immediate protection and reliefto elephant populations in Kenya. Demand for theirprogrammes which include Anti-Poachingoperations, Aerial Surveillance, Mobile Vet unitsand the rescue of orphaned elephants and rhinoshas risen sharply as a direct result of the increasedpoaching in Kenya.You can directly support the work of the DSWT byfostering an orphaned elephant or rhino in theircare, providing essential funds for the hand-rearingof orphans so that they might ultimately return tothe wild when grown.

Big investment in Leatherhead Tennis ClubOver recent years £250,000 has been invested in new facilities at Leatherhead Tennis Club. As a result,the club now boasts an excellent clubhouse, two new artificial clay courts and four resurfaced hardcourts with floodlights.

The club offers a year-round range of activities including adult and junior coaching, ‘turn-up and play’club sessions for varying levels, team matches, tournaments and many social events. In a recent survey,members cited ‘friendliness’ as one of the club’s top features.

The club is keen to encourage youngsters to take up the sport and so its coaches regularly visit localschools. Adult and junior coaching sessions are popular and well attended. There is a successfulSaturday ‘rusty player’ programme to help adults return to the game and this year there will also be acoaching programme for ‘midweek Mums’.

Located in Cannon Grove, Fetcham, the annual Open Day takes place on Saturday April 20th from 2-5pm.The club welcomes new members, so come along to see the new facilities and find out aboutprogrammes and membership. If you fancy hitting a ball, wear your trainers or tennis shoes - the clubcan provide tennis rackets and other players! If you can’t make the open day, come and speak to acoach on a Tuesday evening (adults) or Saturday morning (juniors).

Leatherhead Tennis Club is a Community Amateur Sports Club run on a not-for-profit basis by itsmembers. Annual membership fees are highly competitive and there is no additional joining fee. Mixed BlessingsWe have found much interest in courses where two or three tutors aregathered together to discuss a subject from different perspectives, inparticular history, literature and art appreciation.

So our 2013 – 2014 programme, starting in September, will include severalsuch five-week courses.

The first of these – Arthurian Legends (Wednesday afternoons) considers thestories of the Knights of the Round Table, of Galahad and the Holy Grail, ofTristan and Isolt, of the Lady of Shalott, from their medieval backgrounds,

through the poetry of Thomas Malory and Alfred Lord Tennyson, to their depiction by WilliamMorris, Holman Hunt and other members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. There will also be avisit to the House of Lords to see William Dyce’s paintings of Le Morte D’Arthur.

The next, on Monday afternoons, is inspired by the recent discovery of the bones of Richard III,the self-styled Sun of York. Was he, as Shakespeare portrays him, the murderer of the Princes inthe Tower, and other members of royalty who ‘disappeared’, or a would-be social reformer, cutdown in his prime by a cousin (Henry Tudor) with a somewhat tenuous claim to the throne?

In the same series we are running a course on the Bloomsbury Group, looking at their lives andloves, and their achievements. Virginia Woolf’s very personal A Room of One’s Own will bestudied, as will her sister Vanessa Bell’s works of art.

Ashtead WI - March 2013 MeetingWe were very pleased to welcome yet another new member toour March meeting, and our Treasurer announced that we nowhave 50 members in our W.I. This was a particularly happy andbright evening as we had been asked to anticipate Easter with anarray of Easter Bonnets, so an abundance of flowers, eggs,chickens! and lots of amusement.

Unfortunately our scheduled speaker was unable to join us, butwe were very well entertained by Mr David Allen on ‘Murder in

Victorian Times’ with three true stories researched at The National Archives and originalnewspapers, with the appropriate bloodthirsty accounts of the miscreants’ activities. Onewas about a Daniel Good in 1832 hanged for murder, and that Scotland Yard was eventuallybegun as a result of his detection and capture. Another intriguing story was about a MrsThomas, killed and dismembered by her housekeeper, and where all the various parts of thebody went to! The third was of Madeleine Smith who had an affair with a man who wouldn’treturn her love letters on her marriage to another. She tried to poison him with arsenicthree times, but surprisingly was ‘found not proven’ after his death.

Quite a lot is planned for our future events, including a visit to the Chelsea Hospital, andanother to Arundel for the carpet of flowers at Corpus Christi. Members are welcome tojoin our sub-groups for Reading, Theatre, Craft, Scrabble, Lunch & the new Walking group.

We would welcome visitors to our 3rd April meeting, 7.30pm for 7.45pm, when Mrs JeanHaynes will be telling us about Life as a Lady Bailiff.

Dorking Quilters met inMarch for a sewingevening. Some membersbrought their own sewing,and others were involvedin completing the groupquilt which we have beenmaking over the pastmonths.

In recent months we have seen an increase inthe number of patients who have come to ourclinic suffering with neck, shoulder and upperback pain. A number of these patients wearglasses.

Did you know that wearing glasses can affectthe way in which you stand, hold and moveyour upper body, possibly leading to stiffness,restriction and muscle spasm in the neck andupper back? It can also affect the way youwalk. The use of multifocal glasses affects ourstepping accuracy, meaning we are less ableto judge steps as accurately, leading to anincreased load on one or more of our joints.This puts strain on the joints. Another studyhas shown that those above the age of 65years old are particularly at risk of multifocalglasses affecting their gait.

Test yourself (if you wear glasses)• Sit with your head facing forwards and keepit still.

• Look up to the ceiling, then to the floor andside to side.

• Can you see the edges of your glasses?• Do you need to turn your head to see

clearly past the edges of your glasses? If theanswer is 'yes', then your glasses could beaffecting the structure of your neck, leadingto functional problems which cause pain.

Common symptoms are:• Neck and shoulder stiffness and/or aching,especially after sitting for long periods oftime e.g. driving, sitting at the computer orreading a newspaper.

• A sharp stabbing pain in the middle of theshoulder blades.

• Arm pain such as aching, pins and needles,weakness – this indicates a nerve irritationwhich may be due to mal-positioning of thespinal bones.

• Headaches. These can be at the base of theneck, radiating to the forehead, ortemporal area or behind the eyeball itself,sometimes described as a ‘pulling/sharpstabbing behind the eye.’

Campbell Court, Dorking Road is a modern block of flats built on the site of an early20th century house called Prior’s Ford. During the last years of his life, it was thehome of Donald Campbell, CBE.

By beating his father Sir Malcolm Campbell’s records of the 1930s, Donald Campbell onthe 17th July 1964 became the fastest man on land 403.10 mph at Lake Eyre, Australia,and in the same year 31st December on Lake Dumbleyung, Western Australia heachieved the fasted water speed record 276.33 mph.

He was born on the 23rd March 1921at Kingston-upon-Thames.

His untimely death was on Coniston Water in January 1967 when his craft Bluebirddisintegrated while achieving a speed of over 300 mph.

His daughter Gina carried on the family tradition. In 1984 she gained the ladies’ worldwater-speed record of 122.85 mph off shore power boat racing in yet another Bluebird.

In 1985 she presented the Leatherhead Museum with the wheel of her father’s car.

Inner Wheel Backpacks for CharityThe Ladies of The Ashtead Club of InnerWheel (pictured left) spent an enjoyableday together packing a total of 35children’s school backpacks to send to theCharity ‘Mary’s Meals’. The charitysupports chronically poor children inMalawi, Liberia and Haiti, by providing asubstantial mid-day meal, thus encouragingschool attendance and education, anescape route from poverty. The backpacksinclude useful items such as stationeryitems and simple garments for school wear,to ensure that all children are adequatelyequipped.

The ‘Packing day’ was held to celebrate “Inner Wheel Day”, when the emphasis is to fulfill theInner Wheel Objectives, namely to promote true friendship, encourage the ideals of personalservice and to foster international understanding.

The Club is also grateful to friends and residents of Ashtead who contributed generously to theappeal for funds and items for the backpacks.

Inner Wheel continues to meet monthly to promote the ideals of Inner Wheel and raise money forlocal and overseas charities.

As the new gardening year is upon us, why nothave a go at growing your own veg because itdoesn’t need to be difficult and has thepotential to be one of the most productiveand fun things you’ve ever done.

Home grown food tastes better, uses little ifany air miles, can save you a packet and isenormously rewarding because you’re gettingthe top end of the market produce.Remember to grow what you like and whatyour garden can grow well - this may takesome experimenting, but don’t be afraid toadmit that some things are trickier thanothers in your plot.

If you’re an organic gardener or you simplywant to produce pesticide free vegetables,you might need to spend more time thinkingabout what to grow and how you can bestnurture it so that pests, diseases and otherproblems take a back seat.

*Seed and plant catalogues are now morelikely to let you know which varieties arerelatively pest or disease resistant.

*You can also encourage some of the naturallyoccurring insects that parasite or predateupon the garden pests, or bigger animals suchas frogs, toads, hedgehogs and many birds.Insects include:

Ladybirds: The larvae and the adults bothconsume huge numbers of aphids.

Lacewings: The young or larvae are brilliantpredators, eating mainly aphids, but alsoeating other pests such as thrips and eggs ofmoths.

Hoverflies: The soft-bodied yellowy greylarvae are great aphid eaters, a single oneeating up to fifty in a day, nearing 1,000 in itslifetime.

Ground beetles: Often seen scuttling off atspeed when you move pots, low-growingplants or loose slabs, they are mostly blackand often shiny and are brilliant predators ofmany pests including slugs, vineweevils andsome insect eggs.

Solitary wasps: Some feed their larvae onaphids, weevils and other insects.

Some of these may already be in your garden,

but by growing some suitable plants you canreally build up their numbers. On the wholethe simple, non-double varieties are the mostinsect friendly, so try some of these:

• Phacelia: A hardy annual with bluishperfumed flowers, perfect for direct sowing.

• Limnanthes douglasii (the poached eggplant): This yellow and white floweredhardy annual is loved by hoverflies.

• Eschscholzia (the Californian poppy): Thispretty yellow, orange and cream floweredplant can be direct sown and thrives insunny well-drained sites.

• Iberis (candytufts): One of the easiesthardy annuals, it has readily available pollenand nectar, perfect for many beneficialinsects.

The rewards are plentiful - a regular supply ofsuperbly tasty vegetables, picked whenripened to perfection (not just to make themlast longer on the supermarket shelf),gathered as and when you need them and inthe quantities you need (cutting down onwastage) plus you can choose the varieties youfind tastiest.

Transition AshteadWorking towards sustainable consumption

A tribute to the River Mole - how clean is our Valley?

In 2003 the EU Water Framework Directive(WFD) became part of UK law. It will helpprotect and enhance the quality of surfacefreshwater including lakes, streams andrivers, ground-waters and their dependantecosystems. The River Mole rises nearGatwick Airport and flows NW throughSurrey for 80 km to join the Thames nearHampton Court. A couple of months ago, Iwent to a conference organised by SurreyWildlife Trust (SWT) about the River Mole‘system’ which includes all itstributaries.The idea is to involve local groups

concerned about the environment to helpimprove the ecology of the brooks and streams which

feed into the Mole. Reading Wikipedia, you would thinkthat the River Mole is wonderfully clean and pollutionfree but sadly that is not the case. According to theEnvironment Agency much of the Mole’s EcologicalStatus is classifed as ‘poor’. Pollution comes from manysources including agricultural run-off, illegal dumping ofwaste and streams blocked by debris and rubbish.Concrete culverts can sometimes be improved bycreating soil bank edges planted with vegetation whichis a great help to wildlife.

Great work has been done on the Rye Brook on AshteadCommon and more recently with help from SWT andvolunteers to the stretch across the Rye Meadow project.The Rye runs under the M25 (not sure how we deal with that)and emerges as a stream along the left of the entrance roadto Tesco from the roundabout at Kingston Road (photoabove). The Strode is another Mole tributary, rising inPachesham Park, going under the M25, then crossing thepublic footpath in Teazle Wood. You can stride across a smalltributary to the Rye using the bridge, see photo left. Butsadly an ongoing problem is the rubbish that gets dumpeddaily. One of the long-term aims of the Friends of Teazle

Wood is to clean up these tributaries. In 2011 the UK published its first National EcosystemAssessment which pointed out how nature provides a wide range of benefits vital for the UK. Thebenefits derived from improved water quality were found to be a staggering £1.1 billion peryear. So this is not just a ‘nice to have’ but it has a positive economic impact as well.

Mole Valley Police ColumnThe Safer NeighbourhoodTeam (SNT) for MoleValley is urging localresidents to be on thelookout following arecent number ofhandbag thefts across thearea.

These thefts have takenplace when the offenderspots a handbag on theseat of a vehicle and thenopens the door, usuallywhen the victim is still inthe car and it is either

stopped or is moving at a low speed.

The officers from your Safer Neighbourhood Teamare urging residents to take sensible precautionsto prevent themselves from becoming victims ofcrime. This includes keeping car doors locked,keeping valuables (including handbags and satnavs) out of sight and not to leave items of anyvalue on the passenger seat, even when you are inthe car.

These offences have occurred at a number ofdifferent locations across Mole Valley - but mainlyin or near car parks. The incidents often takeplace in the evening and the age of the victimshas ranged from eighteen to seventy four.

Your Safer Neighbourhood Team has been carryingout additional patrols in the affected areas and inother areas which we feel could be potentialtarget locations.

The offender is described as a tall white man, ofslim build wearing dark clothing including abeanie hat.

As the better weather approaches (please!!), wewould like to remind anyone who has enjoys horseriding that Surrey Police carry out free saddlemarking at many different venues across theborough throughout the year. Your saddles canbe stamped with a unique reference number (in aconcealed part of the saddle), which is thenlogged onto our recording systems, with detailsincluding the make, size and description of thesaddle – as well as who owns it.

In the event that a saddle is subsequently stolen,we have a far greater chance of reuniting any

Throughout the coming year, your local officerscontinue to work with partner agencies to try tokeep the roads in Mole Valley as safe as possible.Regular speed monitoring with Community SpeedWatch volunteers continues, as do regularenforcement operations in partnership with VOSAand our Roads Policing Unit. Offences, such asspeeding, driving whilst using hand held mobilephones, not wearing seatbelts etc will betargeted, as well as vehicles found to bedefective or carry illegal number plates or tintedwindows.

Part of the purpose of these operations is toeducate motorists about the importance ofadhering to the law, as well as directenforcement when actual offences have beenidentified.

As a side issue, we would like to appeal to ALLroad users, be they motorists or cyclists, to beconsiderate of each others’ rights to use thehighways safely. As a motorist, please don’t bethe person to cut up cyclists who are using thehighway perfectly legally. Please be patient andconsiderate as you will then have the right toexpect the same behaviour in return. As acyclist, please don’t be part of a minority whoignore red lights, mount the pavements or ride inan aggressive manner. It gives cyclists in generala bad name and does nothing for the cause ofpromoting tolerance and co-operation.

Springtime in the gardenWith Easter upon us most of us will be looking forward to warmer brighter days spent in the garden andwith so much to do after a cold winter we will be using electricity at some stage either to tidy up thegarden or light some feature, power a fountain or pump or just simply run a cable for when we next needit.

But with this sense of seasonal optimism comes a very real threat.

Every year 70 people are killed and 350,000 are seriously injured from electrical accidents with 2.5million British adults saying they have experienced an electric shock at home. And when it comes tousing electricity in the garden damp conditions and contact with the ground means that the risk of injuryor death from electric shock is greatly increased compared to indoors. Using an RCD is essential.

What is an RCD?If your home was built after January 2008 you will have noticed that your Consumer Unit (this replacesthe fuseboard in older houses) is fitted with two devices labelled RCD (which stands for Residual CurrentDevice). These devices are designed to cut off the electrical supply in an instant – typically 25 timesfaster than a circuit breaker and 100 times faster than a fuse! And their purpose is to save lives.

Houses without RCD’sAlmost half of older houses in Britain have no RCD protection. This is why it is vital that an RCD isinstalled. An electrician registered with a recognized industry organisation such as NICEIC will offerguidance in providing a safe permanent garden supply and assess other household electrical safety issues.
