for the ducks in our indoor pool as well as the hydroplanes inthe river. We cry during speeches on Memorial Day and amember's rendition of the National Anthem with our swimteam unfurling an Olympic sized flag in the pool. And we doour best to respect the tradition and heritage that has beenentrusted to us while also remaining relevant to our present. We are a Club. We have fun.

So Patty and I both say thank you to all of you includingour amazing staff. It has been fun. We hope that our effortsand involvement are accepted in the spirit in which we haveintended. This Historic Detroit Yacht Club is part of us all solet's just go out and have more fun!

This is my last article as the Commodore of the Historic DetroitYacht Club. I can honestly tell you all that this has been a trulychallenging and rewarding experience. Our friends are still ourfriends. Patty and I have endured. There is drama and lots of timeand energy and I can reflect that it is all worth it. Patty and I boththank you all for the honor and privilege to have been chosen toserve in this amazing institution.

We also thank all who have been involved. Thanks to Boardmembers, Commodores, Flag Officers, Preservation Trustees andcountless member volunteers. This includes those PastCommodores who impart their experience and wisdom, memberswho plant flowers and decorate and de-decorate for Christmas. The amazing energy and passion applied to causes like CrawfordArmstrong, the Gold Cup our first major concert and the MICSAswim finals. Our members plant flowers, work to recruit and makenew members feel welcomed, assess and consult for restaurantand bar operations and provide professional legal, construction, accounting, management and architectural services. And some-where, amidst all of that work, we have fun.

We agree and disagree. We hug and kiss when we meet in thebar and sometimes we even gossip about each other. We attendfunerals for each other and share in the cheer when our babies areborn. Sometimes we drink too much and other times we are assober and focused to our cause as anyone could imagine. We areone huge functional and dysfunctional family all at once. We arethe Detroit Yacht Club.

So how anyone could justify paying hard earned money for duesand yet work, argue and anguish and still feel guilty when theirmonthly spend in the restaurant and bar is less than the monthprior? Why is it that we can't keep ourselves from being emotion-ally involved? Why do we join together when our Club really needsthose extra few dollars each month? I think I know now.

This is not just a bar, a nice place to eat or a secure place to docka boat. We can all find that easily in this day and age with seem-ingly endless alternatives for entertainment, dining and activity.Simply stated, this is a vortex of camaraderie, community and fam-ily that is as individual as it is universal. It is private and it is pub-lic all at the same time. But one thing it is not… and that is logical. We are a Club. We have fun. We play together at 1 RiverbankRoad, in New Orleans, Put-in-Bay and the Players Club onJefferson. We paddle, swim, boat, eat and drink together. We singtogether with Mitch Ryder, Ty Stone and Rick Springfield. We cheer

addressed the need for our shuttle, Spirit of DYC, may no longerexist and we could reduce another cost of doing business.

We too have our own island revitalization program which startswith passage of the proposals atthis year's Annual Meeting.Passage of them will help us tocontinue revitalizing our Club bygiving our new General Managerthe wherewithal to perform somemuch needed maintenance, deferred during the recession of the last several years. Forinstance, our mechanical room has four boilers in it that are 52years old. At this time two work, one needs to be rebuilt and the lastjust needs to be replaced. A minimum of two are required to keepus from freezing this winter. Passage of the Capital III proposal willlet needed repairs to our heating system begin immediately. Ourbuilding's a grand old girl, with old being the operative word andwhile much has been accomplished, there is always an improve-ment project underway, there is more to be done.

Speaking of getting it done, it's that time ofyear again. The DYC's Boutique is full of giftitems for your family and friends; next timeyou're in the Club make sure you stop by and getZakina's personal recommendation on the per-fect Christmas gift for your someone special.

The National Sailing Hall of Fame is a non-profit educational institution dedicated to pre-serving the history of sailing and its impact onour culture. I recommend checking out theirwebsite at http://www.nshof.org/, you'll be happyyou did and you'll know who said: "And when we go back to the sea- whether it is to sail or to watch it - we are going back to whencewe came."

And that's the way it is from Amidships.

The first article I wrote in the oldest, con-tinually published private club magazine inAmerica, our very own Main Sheet, firstpublished March 1st 1914, (back then it wastitled JibSheet, Commodore Theisen helpedfix that) was called Fleet Captain's Corner,

November 2007.That article of onehundred and fourwords recom-mended the bestthing you coulddo for your vesselin winter lay-upwas to visit it.Before writing Iasked Commodore (of the Detroit Boat Club)Linda Cowles about writing a JibSheet article, her answer to my inquiry was that it be substan-tial, useful and relevant, an edict I have tried toembrace with that first article and every articlesince. As Secretary titled From the Board-Room

to the Board-Walk, I tried to improve on transparency, an issue as relevanttoday as it was back then. To lend some credibility and legitimacy to thatarticle, I plagiarized a person who epitomized truth in reporting by usingWalter Cronkite's sign-off "And that's the way it is…" I've kept that closingin an effort to show consistency in upholding that high standard. Nextcame Bringing up the Rear and while the Rear Commodore hadn't tradi-tionally published, given my desire to help the transparency issue Ipressed on right through to today's Amidships articles. And, if elected onthe 11th of this month, it makes sense next should be "At or From theHelm"; I plan to continue embracing Linda's directive and as long as I don'tget sued, stick with Cronkite's sign-off too.

Regarding Amidships while At the Helm, my intentions are to put the rud-der there and tie it off. Hold a course straight and true, focused on fiscalresponsibility, delivering on our mission statement's goals while puttingforth a full court press to grow our membership ranks; a back to basicsapproach if you will, with emphasis on DYC core values and practices.

The State of Michigan will be leasing Belle Isle, we'll know the terms ofthat lease soon. Whatever they wind up beingand whatever your feelings about Detroit are, (Ilove Detroit) having the State involved withBelle Isle should benefit our Club. Most busi-nesses with brick and mortar assets are famil-iar with this old adage - Location, Location,Location! Our location will be getting lots ofattention and hopefully much needed upgradesnext year as Michigan's newest State Park. Ifyou're purchasing or renewing your vehicle'slicense plates, make sure to request the $11.00Recreation Passport which puts a "P" on your tab and a note on your reg-istration providing you access to all Michigan State Park or RecreationAreas. With that back to basics approach we will position ourselves cor-rectly to fully take advantage of Belle Isle's revitalization. Translating theisland's revitalization into new DYC members and improving retention ofour existing members are priorities that will receive Board andManagement's full attention. As new park management arrives, doors mayopen providing new opportunity for the DYC. Assistant Manager BillBowman will continue his Belle Isle Ambassador role ensuring DYC'sneeds are presented and addressed with outcomes appropriate to ourHistoric Club's role in the park. The head of the Belle Isle Conservancy,Michele Hodges, is a member in good standing of our Club. (By the way,Michele is also running for a seat on the Board this year.) We are connect-ed, engaged and are positioned to capitalize on the impending revitaliza-tion. Example of a potential outcome, if island traffic flow issues are

A MESSAGE FROM THEDYC FOUNDATIONMARK LIFTER, PRESIDENT

There is growing recognition that our clubhouse hassignificant repair and restoration issues that need tobe addressed very soon. A professional engineeringfirm's assessment commissioned by the DYCFoundation, the DYC's Board's analysis of near-termcapital needs, and the last year's initial fund raisingsuccess testify to this recognition. In 2012, manymembers stepped up to take the first steps to preserveand restore our grand clubhouse with generous contri-butions of nearly $90,000 in cash and another $96,000in pledges for 2013 and 2014.

As we approach the December 31 deadline for tax-deductible contributions, we need "all hands on deck"to create the funding that will be needed now and inthe coming years to restore our club's home tograndeur it should and must have. As a starting point, initial cost estimates for PhaseI repairs to the east end of the clubhouse, where we have major problems and visi-ble exterior and interior damage, are in the range of $400,000 to $500,000. Takinginto account funds already raised and pledged, we would have likely have sufficientfunding if each of our members pledged at least $500, with $250 paid in 2013 andthe remainder paid in 2014. As was the case last year, many members gave at high-er levels. Tax-deductible funds donated at this level would allow work to begin laterin 2014.

Soon you will receive a mailing from the Foundation asking you to consider a year-end tax-deductible donation and pledge of contributions to our Seal the EnvelopeCapital Campaign. When you get it, please take to a few minutes to consider whatthis club means to you, your family, your friends here, and to the region. Then, please give what you can.

Feel free to call the DYC Foundation

(313) 757-2540 or

email us at [email protected] if you have any questions.

If you have never been to Brighton State Park, take the time to visit, so close, but the feel is that of the woods of theUpper Peninsula. Detroit Yacht Club Pheasant Invitational ~ This cross-club eventwill be held on the morning of Sunday, December 1st.
