Principal’s Report

We are finally near the end of Term 2 2020. It has

been a big one, something we have never

experienced previously. In this newsletter you will

find a publication released recently from the

Department of Education titled, “A guide to NSW

school students returning to face-to-face learning

– for parents and carers”. This guide provides an

update of activities that can resume along with

activities that remain on hold.

Lynette Tuckwell, our Careers Adviser has been

given the green light to invite universities to come

back on site to engage with students as they

prepare for their studies after St Marys Senior High

School. The university personnel will need to meet

Department guidelines to come on site but this is

a great opportunity for our students to explore the

options available to them and in some cases

investigate scholarships and early entry options.

Last Tuesday, Year 12 Student, Parent, Teacher

interviews were conducted remotely. Thank you to

our families for taking our calls and zooming with Continued over the page

us. Although this is the first time we have conducted our interviews like this, we have received some

positive feedback that may see a range of options being available for these events. Further

discussions will be held with our School Council to review our processes. Following conversations

with our staff around Year 11 Student, Parent, Teacher Evening it has been decided that due to the

disruption to learning, our staff would be best able to provide meaningful feedback to families after

the examination period. This timing will also support students transitioning into Year 12 with course

and subject decisions. Students will receive a Semester 1 and Semester 2 report. If families have

any concerns that need to be discussed in the meantime, please contact your son or daughter’s

class teacher or Student Adviser.

In the coming weeks our office staff will be sending out invoices to families for school contributions

and fees. We have held off on doing this knowing that some of our families may have been impacted

financially as a result of the pandemic. If you are unable at this time to pay any outstanding

contributions or fees, please contact your son or daughter’s Deputy Principal,

[email protected] or [email protected] . This will allow us to put in place

some support to ensure that no student is disadvantaged.

As a community we have come so far in the

last four weeks. This is a gentle reminder that

if students are unwell, they need to stay at

home until they are better. Unwell includes

coughs and runny noses. We do not want to

take a step backward. I would like to thank

families for their support of this request.

As we move towards the school holidays, we

are mindful of the reality that for many of our Year 12 students these holidays they will be faced with

the demands of Trial Higher School Certificate Examination preparation and finalisation of Major

Works. Year 11 likewise will be busy preparing themselves for their Term 3 examinations over this

period. It is important that all students are able to strike a balance between their studies and utilise

some opportunities for relaxation and rejuvenation, and ensuring that their wellbeing is a priority as

they move into a very busy term. There are a variety of support services available within the school

to assist students.

I hope all of our students have a wonderful end to Term 2 and are able to utilise some of the time in

the holidays to recharge, ready for another busy term. I also would like to thank the staff at St Marys

Support for Students - NESA and ReachOut

NESA has partnered with ReachOut to deliver news,

information, guidance and advice to support all

students studying for their HSC, and the material

provided is something that we recommend all of our

students access.

In particular, ReachOut’s Study Hub has a lot of

information about taking a proactive approach to

mental health as well as providing advice about where

young people can find support. The Forums are also

great places for sharing ideas about the best ways to

feel happy and well.

The Study Hub can be found at

study-during-coronavirus
