24 July 2015 24 July 2015 FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK So far this semester we have welcomed more than 30 students and 13 teaching staff. While this is a big influx of new people, it is both a compliment to the school’s reputation and a testament to the inclusivity of our community that so many people want to be here, and that they have become absorbed in our school so smoothly. Two of those students are international exchange students; one from Germany and the other from Finland. We have also accepted 17 Chinese students and 2 teachers into our world for the next six weeks, and next week more overseas visitors, this time those from Nerima in Japan, arrive at our doors. I have seen many newspaper articles over recent times in which the City Council, and in particular the Mayor, Paul Pisasale, have championed Ipswich as a global city. The Mayor is well known for his enthusiastic and passionate declarations that Ipswich should be regarded as a development hub for major multi-national companies, and that its policies welcome and support such investment. The Ipswich State High School is showing how, in secondary schooling at least, the community’s action can match his words. Many thanks to those families who have chosen us to provide their children with a realistic and practical educational experience, and also to those many families who have welcomed their homes and their hearts to our international visitors. The recent parent/teacher interviews were again very successful for those who attended. In particular, families with students in their first and last years of high school were well represented. My conversations with parents certainly indicated a great deal of satisfaction with the efforts of our staff in their classrooms. Please visit our Facebook page and cast your vote in the battle of the dance-offs between our staff and students. I know which one I think is most entertaining – my thighs ached for a couple of days afterwards! We have our Annual Athletics Carnival today, and next week the final selection trials for our school team will be held. Students have been training hard and I wish them good fortune. Students have also been working hard in their QCS Test preparation program, and Year 10 students will shortly begin their SET Plan program. Sporting teams continue to impress, with both the Year 8A and 9A teams in the semi-finals of the State Rugby league competition. The Year 10A and Open A teams play next week, while the Open B team has already won their premiership. Football, netball and Dance groups have also been winning recently, and we look forward to continuing success in all our High Performance programs. Our next enrolment session for 2016 will be held on Tuesday at 3.30pm in the Resource Centre. I look forward to meeting new and existing families who have made the wise decision to enrol in our school. Thank you to all who partner with us the education of their young people.
