We hear about cancer all the time, but often the terms used to describe treatment seem a bit intimidating. Today we will examine a few of these terms and will find that several main treatment options use the same basic mechanisms that we have already learned.

TaskYou are an intern at Dr. House’s cancer research center. In order to prove yourself, you needto gain some basic knowledgeabout treatment options. Todayyou will turn in a summary of your research, a diagram explaininghow one of the two options works, and a scenario where one optionmight work better than the other.

Use the buttons on the left tonavigate. You can visit any partwhenever you want.

3RESEARCH

Click to watch the movie, then go to each of the other links to learn more about treatment options for cancer. Use these and other websites to do further research to find:

- How they work (main mechanisms)- History (when they were developed, notable people) - Key facts (How long does it take? What are expected

side effects?)

You will write these down on a sheet of paper, which you will turn in to me at the end of the activity.

3CREATE A DIAGRAM

Each of the therapies you just researched operatesusing a basic mechanism which we have discussed in class. Chemotherapy utilizes diffusion, while radiation therapy damages the cancer cell byintroducing mutations in its DNA. Create a labeleddiagram of one of these two mechanisms. You can draw your diagram by hand, or you can do it onthe computer. You will turn this in with yourresearch.
