Today you will be expected to take a journey through Russia through the use of the web. Along this journey you will be stopping at several different Russian authors houses and learning about their lives, and their works.

-Create a sketch of Leo Tolstoy incorporating different aspects of his life and beliefs into the picture

-Copy down a short poem from the great Alexander Pushkin and create a short summary of how the topic or information in the poem could relate to you in your life here in the present.

-Create a timeline through the use of PowerPoint on the life of Isaac Babel.

1. Divide into teams of 3 travelers.2. You will first travel across the cold Russian lands to the home of Leo Tolstoy (http://

www.online-literature.com/tolstoy/).3. Here you will study the Great Russian author and find as much information as

you can about his personal life.4. Now, one of the travelers in your group will create a sketch of Tolstoy using the

information you found at his home to add details to the picture that describe who he was as a person (beliefs, goals, works…).

5. As you continue on your journey you will come across the dwelling (http://members.tripod.com/~halonine/pushkin.htm) of possible the greatest Russian poet of all time, Alexander Pushkin.

6. While visiting him, ask him to read you some of his shorter poems; pay great attention as his words can tame the wildest of souls.

7. After listening to several of his great works, as a group choose one that you all like the best.

8. One of the travelers in your group will need to write this poem down using word processor. You will then need to write a well developed paragraph on any aspect of the chosen piece that you believe is relevant to you as a growing adult in the 21st century.

9. As your journey comes close to an end you find yourself stopping at the house of Isaac Babel (http://www.answers.com/topic/isaac-babel).

10. While you are visiting Babel ask him about his life and the important thing he did in it.11. Now the last remaining traveler of your group will need to create a timeline using

PowerPoint. You will need to touch on all of the major events in his life, including some of his works, so make sure you ask enough questions while visiting him at his home.

Now that you have traveled trough the great and vast lands of Russia what have you learned about the great authors that you have visited and possibly even the culture surrounding them? Hopefully you now will have a greater understanding of the lives and times of the authors that we will be exploring in this unit. This Webquest was created by Cody Brunton for Educ331 with several purposes. First of all it was a learning tool for myself to become acclimated with the actual idea of a Webquest. This is a very helpful tool for students to learn and is a great way to incorporate technology into the classroom. I also designed it with the purpose of it being an introduction to an actual Russian literature course or even just a section about Russian literature in a normal English course.

This project is designed to be completed in 2 class periods. One for the research and study of the Webquest and one for the actual production. Groups can be divided in any way each student will be working on an individual aspect of the quest. Make sure that each student has his or her own goals for the project. If computer space is limited you could possibly have one half do the research one day and the other do it the following.

The first and most obvious way to decide if the students have learned the material to the necessary extent will be to evaluate the material that the students turn in. Did they get all the necessary material that was asked? Does it seem like they have the type of information on their projects that leads you to believe they actually understood something beyond the surface of these characters or did they seem to just cut and paste plain boring facts into the projects? If you are unsure if they got the information that you desired they learn through the experience, give them a short, low pointed quiz with easy basic facts they should have picked up on through the research.

-Tell students that today they will begin a section on the writers of Russia.-Explain the idea behind a Webquest and briefly show them how to navigate through it.-Divide into groups of your choosing.-Set them free to begin their “quest”-Be prepared to answer and guide them through any technical problems they may have as some of your students will not be a s computer savvy as the others.-Have them hand in their projects upon completion.-Debrief the students on what they have done.-Explain any questions they may have on the topic.-Explain how this will relate to the rest of the course so the students will understand the significance of the work they have produced.-Ask for feedback so you can modify the assignment down the road to better suit the desired outcome.-Grade projects and return timely.
