Irish Creditors Remain Unnegotiable87% of Irish people in a recent survey report that when they attempted to negotiate with their unsecured creditors the financial institutions were either uncooperative or aggressiveIn response to the proposals this week by the government regarding debt forgiveness measures, and considerable media coverage around this massive problem in Ireland today, Moneyvillage.ie have conducted a survey of their clients who are currently in a debt management plan, and have appointed Moneyvillage.ie to negotiate with the creditors on their behalf. These results emphasise the need for impartial advice to assist the hundreds of thousands indebted people in this country to negotiate their way out of debt.

The results were as follows:

» 87% of the unsecured creditors were either unco-operative or aggres-sive with the Credit Unions been cited as particularly aggressive.

» 80% of the people surveyed had been threatened with legal action by unsecured creditors

» Those surveyed were asked what the governments reaction to MABS not being able to cope should be, and 80% said that the government should regulate and support debt management companies.

» 97% said no more taxpayers money should be put to support state funded debt agencies

» When asked how the management of their debts has helped them, 100% said it has reduced the stress in their life and 97% said it has been more cost effective

Commenting on the results, Eugene McDarby, CEO of Moneyvillage.ie, and chair-person of the Debt Management Association of Ireland said, “it is clear that Irish people are not aware of their options when in debt and because of this are defaulting on their mortgages , rather than facing the negotiations with aggressive unsecured creditors. The government needs to take a holistic approach to dealing with all types of debt, and not just the mortgage.

We appreciate there is a big problem with negative equity and this has to be dealt with on a major scale, however our survey shows people don’t think that more tax-payers money should be spent on solving the debt crisis in Ireland. Moneyvillage has seen a dramatic increase in the numbers of people looking for help.

MABS has a long waiting list and the process is that people have to go to their offices for advice. Many of these people are so embarrassed they just want help in their own homes. What is absolutely crucial is that people prioritise their mortgage first and negotiate with their more expensive short term debt based on what they can comfortably afford. This is a simple non judicial process and does not need any legal intervention”.

‘‘Social Inclusion is about creating

a society where everyone experiences full and equal participation in all aspects of life and South Dublin County Council remains committed to sustaining and enhancing efforts to improve the quality of life of all residents in the county. I would encourage everyone to get involved in the planned activities and to help make Social Inclusion Week 2011 a success”.Mayor Caitríona Jones

Social Inclusion Awareness WeeksMonday 7th November to 21st November 2011

Mayor Caitríona Jones in the presence of Ms. Joan Burton T.D., Minister for Social Protection will officially launched The South Dublin County Council Social Inclu-sion Awareness Week on Monday 7th November 2011 in County Hall, Tallaght. South Dublin County Council is working to minimise disadvantage and improve the quality of life for all residents in the County.

The aim of this week is to highlight the positive work carried out by South Dublin County Council and other agencies to reduce social exclusion and poverty, and to promote an understanding of social inclusion and diversity in the County.

Social Inclusion is the process which ensures that those at risk of poverty and social exclusion gain the opportunities and resources necessary to participate fully in economic, social and cultural life and to enjoy a standard of living and well-being that is considered normal in the society in which they live. ( Joint Report by the Commis-sion and the Council on Social Inclusion, Office for Official Publications of the Euro-pean Union). South Dublin County Council plays a key role in the direct delivery of social inclusion actions, programmes and supports to the communities.

2011 is the European Year of Volunteering. It is a celebration of people who work in their communities during their free time without being paid for example in schools, hospitals and sports clubs. Social Inclusion Week provides us with the platform to highlight social inclusion initiatives and promote active citizenship. Social Inclusion is about creating a society where everyone experiences full and equal participation in all aspects of life. Social Inclusion is “Everyone’s Business”.

During the week there will be a varied programme of events, including Celebration of Social Inclusion in the Civic Theatre, a Tea Dance for older people in the Red Cow Inn Clondalkin, Art Workshops in County Library Tallaght, the screening of the Sewing Room in County Library, Cookery Classes (how to cook on a budget), Indian Dancing Workshop, Launch of South Dublin Migrant Integration Forum, Social Media and Volunteering Workshop and much more. A detailed schedule for the Week has been developed and is available on our website:

callous and unnecessary closure of Loughloe House in Athlone last year.

“The HSE’s Regional Manager was unable to say how much this closure would ‘save’ the HSE. Withsome patients being moved to private care it may well entail substantial additional costs.

“The closure of St. Brigid’s, Crooksling comes af-ter the HSE spent some €2 million on upgrading the home. 89 patients, 66 of them high depen-dency, are to be moved elsewhere. A facility at Inchicore has been earmarked for high depen-dency residents but the facility is not equipped to deal with the number of residents transferring from St Brigid’s

“These closures are part of the drive by the HSE to privatise all nursing home care for older people. The HSE and the Minister for Health are effectively abandoning their duty of care with their determination to press head and privatise the care home sector regardless of the conse-quences. This policy should not be allowed to

Government figures don’t add up – Crowe

Dublin South West Sinn Féin TD Seán Crowe has described as ‘deeply embarrass-ing and a cause for concern’ the announcement that the general government debt is €3.6bn lower than originally estimated.

Deputy Crowe said: “Yesterday’s news that the government debt is €3.6bn lower than originally estimated is deeply embarrassing for the government and the officials involved in this miscalculation.

“The explanation that an ‘accounting error’ of this size went unnoticed for so long is truly shocking.

“Yet despite the fact their figures didn’t add up, the government were very slow to respond to the news. “Clearly, on the basis of this information, the government no longer needs to cut €3.6 billion in the budget to meet next year’s 8.6% deficit target that has been set by the EU/IMF.

“I am calling on the Taoiseach Enda Kenny to make a statement on the matter explaining how, if at all, this week’s news changes his government’s approach to December’s budget.

The Government should also consider using some of this additional windfall for a jobs stimulus package that would help alleviate the difficulties facing tens of thousands of famiilies and individuals across the state.”

Hayes expresses anger at lack of consultation for revised timetable for 54A

Local Fine Gael TD and Minister of State, Brian Hayes has criticised Dublin Bus for its lack of consultation concern-ing the timetable change for the 54A which will see a drastic reduction in the number of services each day.“I was contacted by constituents who came across this change earlier this week on the Dublin Bus website. I

am disgusted at the lack of consultation Dublin Bus have provided on this matter. The very short notice provided by Dublin Bus does not allow people who use the service to make alternative plans and I fear in manvy cases bus users will not be aware of the change and as a result will be late for work and school.”

“From Monday morning people using the service from Kiltipper will see the service cut from 42 to 30 on weekdays, 36 to 25 on Saturdays and 28 to 15 on Sundays. This change is creating barriers for those who have no other means of getting to work, school or simply access the city at the weekends. This change will have an enormous impact on people from Kiltipper, Tallaght Village, Orwell/WORK and Kimmage.”

“Earlier this year Dublin Bus attempted to abolish this route and was only prevented by the volume of complaints it received. The latest move by Dublin Bus is completely disrespectful to those who use the service and fought to keep the route.”

“I have contacted the CEO of Dublin Bus to express my dissatisfaction that no consul-tation took place with residents in the affected areas and I am awaiting a response.”

Praising the setting up of the new ser-vice, Charlie O’ Connor said “that this was a great initiative by the local GP’s” and he felt that it would be warmly wel-comed by the Community at large.

Local Ministers welcomes announcement on Tallaght Fire StationLocal Ministers Brian Hayes and Pat Rabbitte have warmly welcomed today’s announcement by their colleague, Phil Hogan TD, Minister for the Environ-ment, Community and Local Government to support essential upgrade works to Tallaght Fire Station.

Welcoming the announcement both Ministers stated, “There is an urgent need to upgrade the facilities at Tallaght Fire station, which is one of the busiest sta-tions in the capital. Funding of € 300,000 to upgrade the station is to be made available by the Department of the Environment to supplement funding committed by Dublin City Council.”

“The health, safety and welfare of fire fighters is of vital importance. The fire service is a place where men and women knowingly go in harms way in order to protect the community and it is important that fire fighters have access to adequate facilities in Tallaght.”

“Both of us visited the Fire Station in recent weeks and saw at first hand the problems that existed and the urgent need to have work carried out. We both gave commitments to meet collectively with Minister Hogan to advance this matter. It is a disgrace that the condition of the station was allowed to deteriorate so badly during years when other fire stations across the country had refurbishment works carried out.”

“We are delighted to have secured €300,000 towards the renovation works of the fire station. It is well overdue, notwithstanding todays announcment, we are committed to solving the long term needs of this busy station.”

Birthdays And Halloween by Michael J. Whelan

It was the early hours of November 1st, it always was. He could still hear fireworks in the distance as he tried to sleep, but the vi-brations crept up, they always did. He drifted, he was there again.Sean lay in his room; face down on the bed under a mozzy net, his hand reaching towards a cup of water he had strategically placed on the floor earlier. Lamplight shone in over the high T-walls through a scabby net curtain on the window and rested on the ancient lino. He had only been there an hour but it felt much longer. The vibrations felt closer, louder, the hair on his back was awake now, water rings expanded to the edge of the cup. His mouth was dry and he could hear the buzzing of the mosquito fall silent, it was feeding but Sean’s head hurt too much to care. The grey colour of the room changed and looking up to the light he could see the glaring reflection of two red flares on the glass, travelling between the gap at the top of the concrete T-wall and the window frame. He remembered that the room had been a replacement sec-tion to the prefab accommodation billet that his platoon called home. It had been hit by an Israeli tank-round some years before and the guy inside was injured, hence the T-walls. His room was always a little more modern in that respect, but he was always aware of the shrapnel damage around the edges.

He dragged himself off the bed and put on his boots, helmet and flack-jacket, slung the rifle over his shoulder and rolled his uniform and ammunition pooches under his arm and grabbed a last gulp of water. Outside it was dark and cold as he stood at the bunker with some of the others lads from his pla-toon. Gerry stood on the sandbags like a white powdered statue in the night, naked except for a towel he held behind himself, opened out by both arms.

His body was silhouetted by a series of bright flashes and streaming lights in the distance. You didn’t need much imagination to see he had been drink-ing. Gerry and Sean had been on a run to the battalion rubbish dump a week before and hadn’t seen each other since. They had both been a little upset that day at the sight of children living off the dump and rushing for the slops and trash they had just discarded. A filthy looking old lady with about three teeth in her head sat eating a rotten potato; like it was an apple and a young pretty girl looking after smaller ones sucked cream from the grease proof paper that had once wrapped the remains of the birthday cake the lads had made for Sean, two days before. Then, on the way back, the dump truck they were trav-elling in lost its brakes and almost drove over the side of a cliff. Gerry hadn’t eaten or come out of his room for a week after that and Sean hadn’t stopped eating and getting drunk at any opportunity when off duty. Crazy the way you react to things. But then lots of crazy things happen on these missions.

The vibrations were stronger now and the stillness of the night was being torn by a thunderous noise from across the wadiis. Silhouetted by the transparent towel covering Gerry’s legs they could see red and green flares popping into the sky from all over the place and orange tracer zipping back and forwards with a constant bup, bup, bup, bup. Sean still hadn’t got his head together when a giant explosion of thousands of multicoloured sparkles burst out of the distant wadii and great phosphorous lights illuminated the horizon, fol-lowed seconds later by a tremendous bang that almost knocked him to the ground. The vibration waved up the hill and rushed over them.

‘What’s happening lads,’ Sean asked in a wimpish voice.

Gerry replied matter of factly, as he wrapped the towel around his waist, he had been to Lebanon many time before. ‘C Company HQ is under fire boy, that’s a tank-round gone in from Hill 880’s side. I bet them sparkles are from fleschettes peppering their T-walls. We just word over the radio that their billets are on fire and some of the boys are trapped between them and the bunkers.’

Sean was scared then. He could see lines of tracer bouncing of the spot where the flashes were coming from and shooting skyward. They all had friends down there and they could do nothing to help them. The Hizbollah and DFF were beating the hell out of each other and the Irish lads were caught in the middle, catching all the lead. Red flares meant FIRING CLOSE ON OR NEAR UNITED NATIONS POSITIONS but they weren’t going to stop. The noise and sky was like Halloween in Ireland. It dawned on Sean then that less than two hours earlier he had been down there with the lads enjoying the craic over a few beers. He had been offered a bed for the night as he had missed his lift but managed to beg a ride in an armoured car with the Battalion Mobile Reserve patrol, the last one out of the camp.

Next morning, they found the billets, medical post and canteen destroyed. The T-walls had been cut in half and peppered with thousands of long shards of shrapnel, stick-ing out in all directions like a giant bleak hedgehog.

Birthdays and Halloween always brought him back to that night.

The Chrysler 300C and Fiat Freemont have both achieved five-star safety rat-ings in the latest round of tests con-ducted by the independent safety or-ganisation Euro NCAP, while the new Chrysler Grand Voyager achieved a commendable four stars, just shy of the points required for five stars. There are four main areas of assessment: Adult Oc-cupant, Child Occupant, Pedestrian Protection and Safety Assist, and the objective of the test is not only to ascertain how well the vehicles perform in a crash but also how the vehicles assist the driver in avoiding accidents in the first place. Achieving a five-star rating is becoming increasingly tougher year by year, making the achievements of FIAT Group in this latest round of Euro NCAP tests all the more impressive.

FIAT Group is committed to doing its part in pro-tecting all road users, adopting the most advanced electronic accident avoidance and mitigation devices, including advanced ESP; forward collision warning (soon to be offered on the company’s best- selling model, the Fiat Panda); blind-spot warning; adaptive cruise control; adjustablepedals and pop-up pedestri-an-friendly bonnets.

Thousands of hours of digital simulations on compo-nents and subsystems, as well as more than 200 impact simulations on the Hyge Slide and more than 80 crash tests (frontal, side, rear and rollover impacts at various speeds against different types of obstacles using crash test dummies of all shapes and sizes) are conducted for each new Fiat Group model.

The only other FIAT Group vehicle tested since the in-troduction of stricter Euro NCAP parameters in 2009 is the Alfa Romeo Giulietta which not only achieved a five-star rating but was also declared the safest car in its class, with a score of 97 percent for the front occupant protection.

Tough New Regulations for Clampers Welcomed – Cllr Lawlor Fine Gael Councillor Brian Lawlor, has welcomed new measures announced by the Minister of Transport to regulate “cowboy clampers”. Speaking about the measures, Cllr Law-lor said, “In recent years the number of complaints from members of the public about the way they have been treated by clampers has increased significantly – yet there is no appeals mechanism in place.”

“The new regulations are intended to protect motor-ists from exploitation and ensure that there is a bal-ance between enforcing parking rules and ensuring motorists receive fair treatment.”

“Under the legislation proposed by the minister, several new regulations will be introduced, including a requirement that employees of clamping compa-nies are licensed and vetted, a limit of €140 on the maximum fine and the introduction of an indepen-dent appeals board.”

“I look forward to the introduction of these mea-sures, which will ensure that the clamping process remains fair and even-handed in its operation and that motorists who behave responsibly will not be unduly penalised.”

Steer Clear Of Deer! This week I received a number of calls and emails regarding deer seen wandering along the roadside; and, with a rise in the volume of traffic, a large number of roads being constructed and an increase in the deer population, it’s fair to say, the Dublin SPCA will probably receive several hundred more similar calls regarding these animals before the year is out. However, during the’ rut’ or breeding season it’s not unusual to spot deer. The rut generally oc-curs from July to December, with exact timing dependent upon the species of deer, and, now the clocks have gone back an hour, it’s worth mentioning these creatures are most active between the hours of dawn and dusk. So please keep an eye out for them when driving as road traffic ac-cidents (RTAs) involving deer are quite commonplace. With this in mind, I’ve put together a very brief outline of some do’s and don’ts that I hope will be of help to you.

For more information log on to

www.dspca.ie

or email

[email protected]

© Miriam Kerins, Eduaca-tion Officer, Dublin SPCA

Take note of road signs warning of deer in the area and drive with extreme caution, i.e. below the speed limit. (A stag (male deer) can weigh as much as 350lbs and a hind (female deer) can weigh approximately 30 per cent less; both can cause a lot of damage to your car, not to mention potentially life threatening injuries to you and your passengers).

Use full beam when there is no traffic in front or coming towards you. This should illuminate the deer’s eyes and give you a better chance of avoid-ing him. If you do spot a deer, then dim your lights immediately as he will become startled and just freeze. You need to give him a chance to leave the road safely.

Remember if there is one deer, you should expect more to follow; so con-tinue to exercise extreme caution.

Make sure you stop somewhere safe so that you will not be the cause of another accident.

Do- report the accident to the Gardai who can then contact someone who can assist the animal, i.e. a vet.For more information email [email protected]

Don’t - swerve to avoid hitting a deer; you could swerve into the path of another vehicle. If you happen to accidentally

Anam Cara Bereavement Event – Dominics Community CentreAnam Cara is a national voluntary organisation set up by bereaved parents in direct response to the lack of support services for be-reaved families in the 32 counties. Anam Cara is an inclusive organisation where parents do not identify themselves by their children’s age or how they died, or if their death was recent or many years ago. There is no ideal age or way to experience the death of your child, it goes against nature, parents are supposed to outlive their children.

Anam Cara provide a range of support services which include website, private mes-sage forums for parents and adult siblings, Professional Bereavement talks, family social and remembrance events.

Anam Cara is facilitating a Professional Bereavement Talk on Monday 14th Novem-ber 2011. This event is open to all bereaved parents and our guest speaker for the evening is Dr. David Trickey from the UK and the topic for the evening is “Traumatic Grief and the effects on a Family”.

David Trickey is Chartered Consultant Clinical Psychologist with extensive expe-rience working with Children and Families. He specialises in complex trauma or traumatic bereavement and has worked closely with many organisations in the UK and Ireland.
