Lawlor calls on Government to halt growing unemployment among young people in TALLAGHT

Latest figures from Central Statistics Office show 49% increase in unemployment among under 25s acrossTallaght in the past 24 months.

Fine Gael Councillor Brian Lawlor has slammed the government for failure to tackle the growing levelsof unemployment in Tallaght.

Speaking on the issue, Councillor Lawlor said, “Over the past two years unemployment among youngpeople in Tallaght has grown at a phenomenal rate, even greater than the national average, yet the government has done nothing to try and buck this trend. The latest figures from the Central StatisticsOffice show that over the past 24 months the number of under 25s on the live register has risen 40.64%in Dublin South west and 48.85% in Tallaght. This compares to an average increase across the state of31.10%."

Councillor Lawlor continued, “We need to take action to create new jobs in Tallaght. Behind thesestatistics are real people, who have to deal with despair, disillusionment, depression and all the othersocial issues that come with unemployment. I am tired of seeing my friends and neighbors, young people, emigrating not out of choice, but because there is no choice.”

“At a time when the Government’s primary concern should be getting Ireland back to work, they seemto be interested only in saving their own skins. In recent weeks, we have seen a litany of TDs announcing their retirement so they can get the most generous pension possible. The fact that these TDsare so willing to give up their jobs shows the utter disconnect the Government has from the lives andconcerns of so many Irish people.”

Anam Cara Bereavement Event

– Dominic Community Centre, Tallaght, Dublin 24

Anam Cara is a national voluntary support group set up by bereaved parents who provide support, understanding and a forum for families who have experienced the death of a child, regardless of age or circumstance of death.On Monday 14th February Anam Cara will be facilitating a Bereavement Talk at thenew venue for our Support group meetings, which takes place on the second Monday of each month. The event is open to all bereaved parents. Anam Caradoesn’t identify itself by the age of the child, how they died, or when they died. Itmay have been a cot death or a still birth, suicide, road traffic accident, drug related deaths or serious illness. Anam Cara identifies itself as a group set up byand for parents who have lost a precious son or daughter, trying to find their waythrough the grief and pain.

The guest speaker for the evening is Ger O’Brien who will give her talk on “Coping as a Bereaved Parent”Ger is the Support Services coordinator for the Irish Sudden Infant Death Association. Prior to this she had a private psychotherapy practice in Ra-toath Co. Meath and holds a degree in Psychotherapy and Counselling as well as a Diploma in Health & Social Welfare. Ger has worked with theAssociation since 2001 where she is responsible for delivering a variety of services to bereaved families throughout the Country. Ger’s talk “Coping as a Bereaved Parent” discusses how, for parents, the death of a child is the most terrifying and traumatic event they will everhave to experience. For parents who have to deal with a sudden death, the realisation of what has happened does not sink in for a number ofmonths. While the loss of someone so precious can incapacitate a parent for a very long time there are ways which can help. It is particularly im-portant to keep in mind that no two people grieve at the same time and in the same way. Often it can be difficult to find your way in grief be-cause obviously nobody is trained in dealing with such a difficult and complex loss. However, finding your own way can be helpful in taking backcontrol of your life. The talk will suggest various ways to assist a grieving parent within their loss.Anam Cara will be facilitating other similar events in the coming months around Ireland, see our website for more information.The details for the evening are as follows;
