You will be able to take advantage of a range of opportunities, including educational trips, guest lecturers, and support with entering competitions, student governance, ambassadorial work and access to challenging academic options. Competitions and awardsAt Sussex Downs College, there will be opportunities to achieve national awards, gain performance recognition and win medals in regional competitions. Here are just a few examples from some of our recent students:

Hospitality and Catering students from the Eastbourne campus won a melange of medals in the 2013 Wessex Salon Culinaire. The budding chefs returned from the national competition with two silver and five bronze medals, as well as three certificates of merit.

Brickwork apprentice Louis Wilkinson from the Eastbourne campus won gold at the national finals of the Guild of Bricklayers

Competition, second place in the senior section of the regional heat of Skill Build and is now going on to the national finals in November. Louis is employed by local construction firm, Owen Contractors Limited.

Electrical Installation apprentice Steven Kemp from the Eastbourne campus scored an impressive 100% to gain first place in the

regional heat of the SPARKS UK Apprentice Electrician of the Year 2013 competition.

As a result of his participation in the College’s Newsdesk project, where students submit a quarterly news supplement for The Eastbourne Herald, Media

Production student Sam Munton undertook work experience at the Eastbourne Herald. Here, among other duties, he videoed news stories for their website. As a result of these efforts, Sam is going on to study Broadcast Journalism at Leeds University – one of the UK’s prestigious ‘Russell Group’ universities.

Duke of Edinburgh’s AwardThe College runs the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. An exciting opportunity for students to get involved in a self-development programme; applicants commit to learning a new skill, taking up a new physical activity, volunteering in the community and undertaking expeditions in unfamiliar territory. The programme is sought after and highly valued by universities and employers. AlumniMany of our former students keep in touch and tell us about how they have progressed in their

chosen careers – their stories are amazing! Here are just a couple of examples from some of our recent students:

Drama and Theatre Studies student Hetti Bywater now has a major role playing Lucy Beale in Eastenders.

The actress was cast in 2011 following her studies at the Lewes campus. Hettie has also performed in Doctors and Casualty.

Chris Li studied at the Lewes campus and is the founder and CEO of online retailer Luxury For Less, a leading multi-channel online retailer of bathroom equipment,

furniture and accessories. The success of the company was recognised with a string of awards, including Small Online Business of the Year at the National Business Awards. Chris was also named Young Entrepreneur of the Year in the Growing Business Awards.

Home to Sussex Downs Park College and Sussex Downs Vocational College, the Eastbourne campus is made up of ten specialist and general teaching buildings.

Learning facilitiesFacilities include realistic industry-standard vocational workshops, media suites, art and design studios, a custom-built sports hall, full use of a 400m athletics track, well-equipped classrooms, a high-spec laboratory with full disabled access and a Construction Centre. There is also an on-site restaurant and hair and beauty salons – all of which are open to the public and mean students can gain first-hand experience with customers.

Learning CentresThe campus has two well-resourced Learning Centres to accommodate individual or group study outside of lessons. The Learning Centres feature a wide range of books, newspapers, magazines, e-books and searchable databases, as well as PCs that can be used on a drop in or bookable basis.

ILearnILearn is the College’s online learning

environment for students, to help support learning outside of lesson time. You will use ILearn throughout their time at the College to access material, submit assignments and communicate with your peers.

CateringWhether you’re looking for a quick cup of coffee or a hot meal, the Eastbourne campus offers a wide range of food and drink options to suit all tastes. As well as vending machines, there are catering outlets situated throughout the campus:

The Amigo shop in the Tyler Building provides a great range of grab and go snacks.

The EAT Restaurant, also in Tyler Building, serves up hot and cold breakfasts and lunch options, including a salad bar and a range of snacks.

A smooth transition for your child from school to College with care, guidance and support… What is Further Education (FE)? Typically, Further Education (FE) includes A Levels, AS Levels, Apprenticeships, vocational and industry recognised skills qualifications such as BTECs, and Foundation Learning. FE encompasses learning beyond what is achieved in primary and secondary education by Year 11.

Open Events Our Open Events can help you to find out what our College has to offer. You will have an opportunity to look around and meet our lec-turers and tutors. Applying to the College On receipt of your child’s application an inter-view date is sent out. At interview, we make sure your child has chosen the right course for them and help them with details about the course or programme. We encourage parents to attend. Usually an offer is made with conditions like GCSE grade requirements. Occasionally a refer-ral will be made to consider alternative options.

We recommend an introductory day visit to the College at the end of the summer for your child to attend classes in the subjects they have chosen.

Instructions, student support and enrolment details will be despatched during the summer about what to do on GCSE results day.

Beginning College The induction period is seen as an opportunity to make the transition from school to College as easy as possible. Your child will be intro-duced to their personal and academic tutors who will be able to help with the timetable that they will be given.

This includes pastoral care and a specialist Additional Learning Support team and Personal Tutor team, who work closely with students. helping you to excel in the workplaceEmployers tell us they are concerned that young people can sometimes lack the right skills and attitudes when they apply for an Apprenticeship or other employment. To help overcome this, Traineeships aim to help you de-velop the skills you need to secure and succeed in employment, including Apprenticeships.

Traineeships offer you the opportunity to carry out a substantial work placement and work skills training, alongside support to improve your English and maths.

The mixed three-year programme is for aspiring Level 3 students, who would like to improve their skills and

GCSE/Level 2 equivalent grades before embarking on the Level 3 programme of their choice.

The first year at College will be spent gaining and improving your GCSE and vocational Level 2 qualifications and study skills.

During the first year, the core programme consists of a Higher Project, a Personal and Social Development Award and a Planning and Delivering a Social Enterprise Award.

Depending on the grades you need to begin your chosen Level 3 course, your programme may include GCSEs in English, Maths or Science.

There will also be optional GCSE courses to choose from, for example Critical Thinking, Psychology, Film Studies, Sociology, Art and Photography, if you’re aiming for an academic course of study. For those wishing to pursue a vocational path, you will

take a BTEC qualification.

In addition, there may be the option to study at AS Level where appropriate. The second and third year will then be spent

studying the Level 3 programme of your choice.

If a full-time course is not what you’re looking (or are ready for) right now, then the College runs a number of short programmes.

With various start dates throughout the year, these programmes prepare you for your next steps to College or work with training and are individually tailored to meet your needs.

Exciting experiences are arranged to develop your skills through team building, community projects and vocational skills training, alongside ensuring your maths and English skills continue to develop.

MIXED 3 YEAR PROGRAME

WHAT IS AN ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION COURSE?Access courses offer adults over the age of 19 a genuine alternative to A Levels as a means of entry into Higher Education. Courses have been created which still give you the time to lead your own life – an important consideration for adult students! You do not need any previous formal qualifications to be accepted on to the course as your experience of life and work is highly valued as good preparation for this level of study. However, they are 10 month intensive courses to help committed learners gain a university place, so dedication is required.

NATIONALLY RECOGNISED QUALIFICATION? The Access Certificate is a nationally recognised qualification - there are now around 1,000 Access courses running across the country and they are ‘QAA approved’, which means that the Quality Assurance agency for higher educa-tion in England approves them as suitable for access to degree courses. They are validated by LASER Learning Awards. Our Access courses have been designed in close collaboration with the universities of Sussex and Brighton. They maintain an excellent reputation both in - and increasingly beyond - the South East region.

WHO IS IT FOR?Often, people who decide to join an Access course feel they didn’t fulfil their potential at school. They may have spent many years in unsatisfying work, been at home looking after children or have otherwise been in a situation where they needed to take a decision about bringing about a change in their lives. What they all have in common is a thirst for knowledge and a desire to carry on with their education.

WHAT WILL I STUDY? A number of different pathways are offered, which run as either day time or evening pathways. Access students will commence their studies in September and the course lasts approximately 36 weeks, normally finishing in the first or second week of July the following year.

All students on both the day and evening pathways attend classes in study skills, maths, and computer literacy, as well as read academic texts. All students complete an individual research project, and study at least six subject units. Both the day and evening pathways lead to the same qualification.

3) Attend your College interviewOnce we’ve received your application, from January onwards we will invite you into the College for an interview so we can find out more about you. It’s also your chance to find out all about us and discover what’s right for you. Following your visit, you will receive your offer letter from us for courses starting in September. This will include an acceptance

form you’ll need to fill in and return to us within three weeks to guarantee your place.

4) Take part in a College introductory dayAfter you’ve sent back your acceptance form to us, in May you’ll receive an invitation for our forthcoming Sussex Downs College introductory days. These usually take place in June and July and are a great chance to sample your course before you start in September, hear from the tutors who will be teaching you, see the College again and get a really good feel for what’s to come.

5) Enrol on your courseIn August you’ll receive your official Sussex Downs College enrolment pack which contains all you’ll need to confidently start your course with us in September, including your enrolment and course start dates.

HOW TO APPLY

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Your GCSE results will determine at what level you can study with us. As you complete each level you can progress to the next level of education. To see how qualifications compare and our standard entry requirements, take a look at the table here which shows the different levels of study and what they can lead to. If studying a practical vocational subject, it is likely that all students would enter at Level 1. Students with some experience in their chosen subject, or who display aptitude, maybe able to fast track and enter at Level 2.

What will I study?

This very practical course is highly structured in order to give you a broad, craft-based understanding of visual language. You will develop your skills in photography (both digital and film-based), drawing, graphic design and 3D design crafts, as well as digital media. You will work with specialist staff in specialist facilities, and will also take Functional Skills in maths, IT and English at Level 1. This ensures that you have the skills needed to progress to the next level.

What can I do after this course?

This course can provide a pathway to our BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design. You will also be able to apply for a range of other specialist courses at Level 2.

Most work is practical including the externally set assignment at the end of the course. You will also develop the skills and independence needed to cope with Level 3 courses.

What will I study?

On this course you will be introduced to a wide range of art and design practice. It is a very practical programme which includes drawing, painting, printmaking, fashion and textiles, graphic design, illustration and 3D design crafts, as well as digital media and photography. This experience will help you to make decisions about subsequent progression. As well as gaining experience of a wide range of approaches to these subjects and an insight into the creative industries, you will gain experience in tackling assignments, evaluating your own and others' work, and preparing for the independent study needed at Level 3. You will also go on several field trips for visual research and contextual study.


This course can provide a pathway on to the extended diplomas in art and design or other appropriate vocational programmes. Past students have progressed successfully on to courses in photography, media and games design, illustration, furniture design, product design, graphic design, design crafts, textiles and fashion design.

What will I study?

On this course you will develop your ability and understanding of art and design. You will study all aspects of this rich and varied subject. You will learn how to form and develop creative ideas and working methods in response to stimulating starting points, and to make exciting and personal outcomes. An aptitude for critical analysis of art history and contemporary practice is useful, and a requirement for primary and contextual research is incorporated.


Students normally join the Fine Art A2 course, which can take you in a range of directions. If you want to specialise in art and design, then progress to the Art and Design Diploma in Foundation Studies, which identifies and prepares you for the best possible specialist university courses.

What will I study?

This course forms the second year of the BTEC Level 3 diploma programme in Art and Design and follows the Level 3 90 Credit Diploma. During this stage you will pursue your chosen pathway (such as graphic design, illustration, digital design, fashion design, textile design, animation, lens based media, product design or design crafts). As well as developing an in depth understanding of your chosen pathway you will prepare for progression, which includes making work which will form the basis of your portfolio for entry to higher education or the workplace. This course has an excellent track record for placement to excellent undergraduate programmes all over the country.

On this course you will explore many aspects of photography. Emphasis is placed on practical work, the importance of camera skills in both colour, black and white, and traditional black and white processing and printing. The use of digital image processing is also an important element. Contextual studies are also vitally important so that you can form an appreciation of photographic work, both historical and contemporary, from other times and cultures.


If part of the GCSE Level 2 Plus programme, then successful completion of this course can provide a pathway to a Level 3 mixed or more specialist programme. If you are keen to pursue photography at the next level then there are a number of possibilities (see A Level and BTEC listings at Level 3).

This course can provide a pathway to a huge range of specialist photographic disciplines (photography, film, digital media, media arts, illustration and others); it is a competitive environment, and students progress to these directly in some cases or, more usually, via Art and Design Diploma in Foundation Studies for further specialist development

Many students go on to university or into employment after completing this course. Up to 40 UCAS tariff points are available for students who successfully complete the exam.

On this course you will study all aspects of care and education related to babies and children up to eight years old. As part of your course you will complete a minimum of 750 hours in work placement within a nursery setting, and foundation year and Key Stage 1 classes. There may also be the opportunity to carry out a baby and special needs placement in year two.

What will I study?

This is the entry level programme for a future career in brickwork. On this course you will learn the basic skills necessary to give you an understanding of bricklaying, including setting out with measurements, building methods, half brick walls, solid walls, block work, piers, mixing mortar, cavity walls, health and safety and safe working practices. You will practise constructing straightforward brick walls and contribute to the setting out and building of basic masonry structures up to damp course level.

You will then progress to using a range of portable power tools by the end of the year.

This qualification is ideal if you wish to pursue a career in construction, architecture, building design technology, surveying or site management. On this course you will study six core and 12 optional units. Core units include sustainable construction, building technology in construction and health, and safety and welfare in construction. Optional units will have an architectural/design related theme such as computer aided drafting (CAD) in design, graphical detailing in construction and construction design technology. You will work with state-of-the-art 3D projection and surveying equipment and should also achieve the Level 3 Award in Preservation of Heritage.

Ideally you will hold a GCSE in Design and Technology from graphic products, resistant materials or product design, although this is not necessary providing you demonstrate a strong interest in the course. GCSEs in Maths and English at grade C or above will also be required.

What will I study?

This AS Level course in Three Dimensional Product Design has been introduced specifically for students who are interested in following careers paths in most design disciplines, including architecture. During the course of the year you will study most common materials, such as woods, metals and plastics and their manufacture, use and application in one-off, batch and mass manufacture. You will also study modern technologies such as smart and modern materials. The course has been designed to meet the demands of 21st century design and manufacturing methods, and as such much of the work undertaken is CAD based, using software such as Sketch Up, AutoCAD and Solid Works. This in turn, enables students to use CAM technologies such as laser cutting, 3D printing and vertical CNC routing.

What will I study?

You increase your knowledge of waterborne paint systems and learn how to use spray equipment. You will be able to practise your skills in our specialist paint workshops. What will I study?

You will further your knowledge of waterborne paint systems to include the use of airless equipment. What will I study?

On this course you will develop the skills and knowledge to enable you to work in the carpentry trade. You will study 16 units combining theory and practice and learn about safe working practices, how to produce planed wood, how to produce profiled wood and how to maintain and produce wood machining tooling, plus many other related skills. This course has been specifically developed for delivery in a college-based environment using simulated conditions in our well-equipped workshops.

What will I study?

On this course you will advance your knowledge of all aspects of the electrical installation industry. It is good preparation for those intending to find an Apprenticeship to complete their training.


You can progress to Electrical Installation Level 3 if you successfully complete this course and show an aptitude for further study. What will I study?

On this course you will learn practical skills in body repair, paint spraying, fabrication and welding by completing projects in our bodywork shop. You will also begin to learn the theory behind these skills. The course includes the development of transferable skills and so can lead to further courses in bodywork or mechanical repair and to a variety of areas of work. Although the course is based on body repair and paint units, the qualification can also be based on work in mechanical repair, or both areas of the motor vehicle trade together. The exact combination can change according the interests of the students who apply. Please make an application if you are interested in either mechanical repair or bodywork. You will be able to discuss this further at interview.


Students who successfully complete this course and reach a suitable level in Functional Skills can go on to the Level 1 courses in either Vehicle Maintenance or Vehicle Body Repair. You may also progress to other courses which prepare you to enter the working world.

What will I study?

This is an enrichment course or it can be taken as part of the Level 2 Plus programme and will give you the opportunity to achieve a Level 2 NVQ in the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. On this course you will learn practical language, which will help you on a business trip or holiday to Spain. Spanish is one of the world's most spoken languages and it is very useful in the world of business. An NVQ in Spanish could be the first step to further study at university or it can simply enhance your CV, as well as providing a great opportunity to learn about a completely different culture.


You can go on to study Spanish GCSE level at one of our evening classes. An NVQ in Spanish will help demonstrate an interest in language and other cultures and would be useful in supporting UCAS applications. What will I study?

What will I study?

What will I study?

This course (equivalent to an AS Level) is the first stage of the BTEC Subsidiary Diploma programme in Dance. You will be involved in the lighting, sound design, set construction and wardrobe of shows, as well as taking a full role in all the backstage work that happens on the night of the performances. What will I study?

What will I study?

On this course you will learn the skills required to instruct and lead in a fitness/gym-based environment. You will learn the basics of anatomy and physiology; how to plan, conduct and evaluate a fitness gym induction session; as well as how to deal with clients. There are both practical and theoretical modes of study culminating in two multiple choice examinations and two practical assessments. You will study the following units: anatomy and physiology, client support, health, safety and welfare, principles of exercise and fitness, planning gym-based exercise, and instructing gym-based exercise.


The course will enable you to register on to the REPS (Register of Exercise Professionals) at Level 2 and gain entry to employment within the fitness industry.

What will I study?

This course will help improve your knowledge of and ability in personal health improvement and wellbeing. You will study three units: understanding the concepts of health and exercise; understanding the nutritional requirements for various types of exercise; and planning and preparing for personal exercise and nutrition.


This course combines well with other subjects including the BTEC Level 3 courses in Sport or Sport and Exercise Science, or with the Active IQ Level 2 in Fitness Instruction.

Learners must have previously achieved a Level 2 Gym Instruction qualification - preferably accredited by Active IQ. The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential, therefore a degree of physical fitness is necessary.

What will I study?

On this course you will develop your skills of instructing and leading in a fitness/gym based environment to that of a Personal Trainer. You will develop your knowledge of anatomy and physiology, plan a personal training session, conduct a group or personal training session as well as how to deal with clients. There are both practical and theoretical modes of study culminating in two multiple choice examinations and two practical assessments. You will study the following units: know how to support clients who take part in exercise, health, safety and welfare, principles of exercise, fitness and health anatomy and physiology for exercise and health, programming personal training with clients, delivering personal training sessions, applying the principles of nutrition.


The course will enable you to register onto the REPS (Register of Exercise Professionals) at Level 3 and gain entry to employment within the fitness industry.

Physical Education (Sports Studies) AS

Level: 3

You will need to meet our standard entry requirements. Please see page 20 for further details. As part of the above this must include GCSE Double Science at grades CC or above and GCSE English at grade C or above. If taking separate sciences, a minimum of grade C is required in both. A GCSE in PE at grade B or above is also required.

What will I study?

On this AS course you will study four major elements, with practical performance at its core. Theoretical aspects include anatomy and physiology, skill acquisition and sociocultural studies in PE/sport. Practical performance in two activities is assessed at set points within the year - an initial assessment upon entry and then again before final moderation. Practical performance represents 20% of the overall mark. You should also be able to analyse strengths and weaknesses in performance, and discuss this via an interview process. This interview is worth a further 10% of the overall mark. A commitment to regular practical sport is essential, as is an awareness of what makes for a healthy lifestyle.


This course can provide a pathway to the Physical Education A2 Level. This can lead to a career in leisure management, teaching, physiotherapy and sports journalism. Universities regard PE as a fully acceptable A Level to count towards degree level entry.

Physical Education (Sports Studies) A2

You will need to have passed AS Level Physical Education. Students achieving below a D grade in their AS will require a guidance interview before progression on to the A2 is confirmed.

What will I study?

On this A2 Level course you will build on the areas studied at AS Level, developing these with units in exercise physiology, sports psychology and the history of sport. In addition you will be assessed in one practical sport and be expected to analyse the performance of a player in your chosen discipline and recommend improvements. You will develop skills in analysing and critically evaluating information and theories, explaining effects on sports performance in the context of promoting a healthy, balanced lifestyle.


Sport is a growth industry and this course can provide a pathway to a wide range of sport and non-sport based careers. Common progression routes into university include PE teaching, sports science, sports studies, leisure management, sports development, coaching, physiotherapy, sports psychology and nutrition.

What will I study?

The course forms part of the Level 2 programme. Within the core qualification you will study: fitness testing and training, practical sport, anatomy and physiology for sport, and injury in sport. You will also be able to gain the Community Sports Leadership Award (CSLA) and have the opportunity to join a Sports Academy course. Where appropriate, you will also be able to study additional GCSEs. We will expect you to show a commitment to developing your knowledge associated with practical performance in sport.


This course can provide a pathway to Level 3 courses if you achieve a minimum of a Merit grade. Your attendance, behaviour and attitude to work will also be considered for this progression.

SportBTEC Subsidiary Diploma

You will need a minimum of four GCSEs at grade C or above, including English Language with maths or Science (BTEC Science will require a Merit grade).

What will I study?

On this course you will study: anatomy and physiology related to fitness, assessing risk in sport, fitness testing for sport and exercise, sports coaching, outdoor adventurous activities, and exercise, health and lifestyle. You will produce 2 or 3 assignments for each unit. You can study this course alongside further AS Levels and some students also enrol on Sports Academy courses. All students usually combine this course with the Community Sports Leadership Award to add to their practical involvement and experience. You will also be required to participate in a residential educational visit.


This course can provide a pathway to Level 3 courses if you achieve a minimum of a Merit grade. Your attendance, behaviour and attitude to work will also be considered for this progression.

What will I study?

This is Year 2 for those who have studied the BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Sport. You will build on these foundations and focus on developing a career in sport. Units include work experience, sport development and sports nutrition. You will be assessed throughout the year with assignments, practical observations and presentations.


This course can provide a pathway to work in the sports industry either with private companies or local authorities. Previous students have gained employment as sports coaches, outdoor pursuits instructors and sports masseurs. Alternatively you may wish to continue your studies at university on degree or foundation degree programmes in sports.

What will I study?

This course is an advanced level vocational course that investigates the effects of exercise on body function with a view to improving sports performance, as well as examining the role of exercise in promoting a healthy lifestyle. You will study the BTEC Level 3 90 credit Diploma in year 1 and progress onto the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in year 2. You will study 18 units over the two years incorporating both practical and theoretical elements including: anatomy, physiology, sport nutrition, sports psychology, outdoor adventurous activities, expedition skills, fitness testing and training, research project, biomechanics, current issues in sport, and sport and exercise massage. It is important to understand the course has a strong academic focus and will require you to commit yourself.


This course can provide a pathway to the College's Foundation Degree in Sports Development and Coaching, validated by the University of Brighton. Options also include foundation degrees/degrees in sport and exercise science, PE, sports studies, physiotherapy and sports coaching.

The qualification can gain entry to the Foundation Degree in Sports Development and Coaching offered by Sussex Downs College, through the University of Brighton. Options also include FdA/BSc degrees in sport and exercise science, PE, sports studies, physiotherapy and sports coaching. You may also further your employment opportunities within sport.

Higher Sports Leadership Higher Certificate QCF

You must hold the Community Sports Leadership Award. You will also have to go through an application and induction process with the course leader to progress on to the Higher Sports Leadership Certificate

What will I study?

On this course you will study 8 units including sport leadership and the community; introducing children to sport; sport and fitness; first aid; national governing body award; and organising and running an event. You will lead three different community groups including primary school children, disabled groups and secondary school children. You will need to complete a Level 1 national governing body award and an 8-hour first aid course. You need to have a keen interest in working with others and leadership. This course does require large amounts of commitment outside of college.


This course is beneficial for further education in teaching, coaching, sports development, sports administration, sports centre work and the leisure industry. All fields of industry recognise the importance of leadership, which is developed by this nationally recognised qualification, and gives the student 30 UCAS points.

What will I study?

On this course you will study seven units, which include work experience, entertainment and air ticketing. You will also complete a Level 2 Cabin Crew Diploma, giving you an excellent insight into this much in demand part of the industry. You will utilise our dedicated mock cabin area and work with airline-experienced staff, some of whom are ex-students from the College.
