As the recently appointed Principal I am both delighted and excited to welcome you to our part-time course guide.

Whilst Sussex Downs College is proud of its commitment to full-time 16-19 students, it is more than an FE College for school leavers. We offer learning opportunities to adults of all ages, with courses designed to update and develop a skill area, help you change career path and improve your job prospects. Or, quite simply, you may be looking to pursue a new course as a hobby or be looking to meet new people.

Whatever your reason, here in this guide you will find a very wide range of courses and qualifications on offer. We also outline our support services, the facilities available and details of course fees. Finance needn’t be a barrier to gaining new skills and for some students who meet the criteria, fees can be reduced.

Our part-time courses have enrolment dates throughout the year, meaning you can start your dream course as early or as late as you would like. Study with us and you will gain a nationally recognised qualification which will help you to move forward in your dream career. We cater for all abilities, so whether you are a complete beginner, or are looking to build on what you already know, you will find something to suit you. FEES, CONCESSIONS & ASSISTANCESome of the fees published within this 19+ Guide are the maximum fees payable, but many of the courses are fully or partly funded by the Government, meaning you may get a cheaper price for the course you choose. In addition, there are various concessions available on many courses depending on your circumstances (marked with ). For all enquiries relating to fee concessions, or if you require any further advice and guidance, please call Student Services on 030 300 39551.

SPECIAL INTEREST COURSES

Concessions are available on many of our Special Interest Courses:

If you are aged 65 or over at the start of the course and can provide evidence of your date of birth or you are in receipt of an eligible* benefit you may be eligible for a 20% reduction in course fees (not including course materials).

*Eligible Benefits; JSA; Income Support; Universal Credit; Housing Benefit; Council Tax Reduction (excluding single person allowance); ESA; Disability Living Allowance; Incapacity Benefits; Attendance Allowance and Personal Independence Payments.

NEW DIRECTION AND FOR WORK COURSES

24+ ADVANCED LEARNING LOANS

The Government have introduced loans for learners aged 24+ to help support their studies and improve their qualifications. The loan covers the cost of your course so you do not have to pay up front.

Learners studying Level 3 and 4 qualifications including A Levels, Access to Higher Education Diplomas, QCF Certificates and Diplomas, can apply for the loan to help pay their course fees.

Receiving the loan doesn’t depend on household income or credit history and repayments do not start until after you complete or leave your course – and only then if your earnings are more than £21,000 per year.

To be eligible for this loan, you must fulfil the following criteria:

• Be aged 24 or over by the first day of your course• Be a UK resident• Have not applied for a loan to study the same level or type of qualification before• You must be applying to study on an eligible course at Level 3 or 4

For learners who take an Access to Higher Education Course, the loan will be written off if you progress to and subsequently complete a Higher Education programme.

ENTITLEMENTS FOR LEARNERS AGED 19-23

Learners aged 19-23 studying on their first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualifications may be entitled to have their tuition fees waived. The waiver is also available for learners who are studying an Entry Level or Level 1 course, where the qualification is essential to continue study at Level 2, in the same or a related subject.

FREE GSCE MATHS AND ENGLISH

If you are 19+ and do not already have a C grade (or above) in Maths or English GCSE, tuition fees for these courses will be free.

IF YOU ARE IN RECEIPT OF BENEFITS

If you are in receipt of Job Seekers’ Allowance (JSA), Employment and Support Allowance in the Work Related Group (ESA WRAG), Universal Credit or receiving any eligible benefits, and feel that skills training will help you to enter employment, you may qualify for reductions in your course fees if you choose a Government- funded course.

Note: There are no concessions for courses not in receipt of Government funding.

HOME STUDENTS

The fees advertised are available for those who have lived in the UK or within the European Union for the last three years.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

International students are invited to apply for courses in this 19+ Guide but the fees may differ from those published. Please contact Student Services for more information.

UNDER 19-YEAR-OLDS

Our courses are designed for people over 19, however, we may consider applications from those under 19. Please contact Student Services for advice.

IS YOUR FEE PAID BY YOUR EMPLOYER?

If your employer is paying your course fees, please ensure they have filled in the Employer Sponsorship section of the enrolment form in the centre of this 19+ Guide. Your employer will also need to sign the form and provide a Purchase Order number. It is advisable that you do this to avoid any delay in starting your course.

OTHER WAIVERS/FINANCIAL SUPPORT

STAGED PAYMENTS

If your course fee is over £100 and the course duration is 14 weeks or more, then you can arrange to pay in stages either using the College Staged Payment Scheme or FlexEd, an external payment scheme. Please visit Student Services to arrange a payment plan.

The College has two options for students to pay in stages.

1. College Staged payments

Payments can be accepted by cash, debit card or credit card.

You will not have to pay the £20 administration fee if you pay by direct debit

2. FlexEd – External Payment Scheme

FlexEd is an external service available to students to allow them to spread the costs of their course over a longer period. Full payment is required by 31st May 2016.

FlexEd make a monthly charge of £6 for this service, and instalments can be paid by Card or Direct Debit. This fee is payable in full with the first instalment. No interest is payable.

REFUNDS

Refunds will be given to students who have cancelled their enrolment no later than four weeks before the start of the course. We will deduct 10% of the full tuition fee (with a minimum charge of £15) from all refunds to cover administrative costs. If a class does not run due to unforeseen circumstances (such as adverse weather conditions), refunds will not be given, but the College will seek to offer suitable alternatives.

No matter what stage of life you’re at,the opportunity to study has never been more within your reach. The Government’s non- means tested 24+ Advanced Learning Loan means anybody over the age of 24 can improve their qualifications on a ‘buy now, pay later’ basis.

The College offers support in applying for the loan to help pay towards the costs of its advanced courses at Level 3 or 4 – which include A Levels, Access to Higher Education, Diplomas and Certificates. Receiving the loan doesn’t depend on household income or credit history and repayments won’t start until 2016 – and only then if your earnings are above £21,000 per year.

HOW MUCH MONEY CAN I APPLY FOR?

It depends on the type of course you take and the cost of the course. The minimum loan amount is £300.

HOW IS THE LOAN PAID?

The loan will be paid directly to the College once you have attended your course for two weeks or more.

HOW MANY LOANS CAN I APPLY FOR?

You can apply for up to four loans, but you can only take out one loan at a time. You can’t get a loan to do another similar level course, for instance, two at Level 3, except for A Levels.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM ELIGIBLE?

1. You must be over 24 years old on the day you start the course.

2. You must be living in the UK on the day the course starts and have been a UK resident for three years prior to starting the course.

3. The course must be an approved Level 3 or 4 course.

4. The course must be delivered by an eligible provider such as Sussex Downs College.

HOW DO I APPLY?

1. You can apply either online at www.gov.uk/advanced-learning-loans or by post now. You can apply for a course that has already started after that date but not after a course has finished.

2. Applications can take up to five weeks to process but you can track your application.

3. You will need to know your National Insurance Number as no monies can be paid without this.

4. You will also need another source of identity, such as a valid passport or birth certificate.

WHAT ABOUT REPAYING THE LOAN?

1. You will not begin loan repayments until April 2016 - even if your course finishes before then.

2. Repayments of the loan, plus interest, will start once you reach the income threshold of £21,000. If your income should drop below this, repayments will be halted until the £21,000 threshold is reached again.

3. If you are self-employed, you will make repayments as part of your self-assessment in your tax return.

WHAT IF I CHANGE MY MIND ABOUT STUDYING ONCE I HAVE TAKEN OUT THE LOAN?

If you leave or change your course after the initial two weeks you will be liable to pay the full amount of the course fees for the programme.

WHAT IF I WANT TO PROGRESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION EVENTUALLY?

If you apply for a loan to cover your Access to Higher Education course and then successfully complete a degree, you will not have to pay back your Advanced Learning Loan – it will be written off.

English and maths for ages 16 -18 At Sussex Downs College you will work towards achieving your GCSE A* – C in English and maths if you don’t already have these qualifications.

It’s a requirement drawn up by the Government in which all Colleges must participate. It’s therefore vital that you achieve the best level of English and maths you possibly can before you come to College.

If you haven’t achieved a grade C or above in English and/or maths from school, then we will design a learning programme to support you in improving these skills by placing you on the right level of English and maths course that supports your progression within your chosen Study Programme.

Understanding Levels

Sussex Downs College offers a wide variety of programmes. Some lead to nationally recognised qualifications at different levels, the details of which can be difficult to get to grips with. Our friendly staff in Student Services are always available to give advice and guidance, but for a brief overview of how qualifications compare, take a look at the chart below, showing the different levels and what they can lead to.

In some cases you will need to start at Level 1 or 2 to ensure you gain the background knowledge and skills you need. In others, as long as you have achieved a certain level of qualification, e.g GCSE at grade C, you can go on to higher study. If you are employed in a role that requires higher level skills and competence, you may be able to ‘jump’ a level.

Do you want to improve your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills?

Do you want to meet new people and make new friends?

If yes, come and study English for Speakers of Other Languages at our Eastbourne or Newhaven campuses.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses are for adults who are not fluent in English and want to improve their language for work, study or living in the UK. We offer a range of part-time ESOL courses at every level, available to study in the daytime or evening.

You will learn with other students who have the same level of English. Our experienced teachers use the most up-to-date materials and a variety of approaches to make sure your classes are interesting, motivating and effective. Classes include group, pair and project work and computer-based activities.

Raku Summer School This is an informal four-day annual event. The first two days are making days, students generally have an idea of what they would like to make, but the tutor will offer ideas, and provide demonstrations of techniques. The following two days are used to glaze work, and students will develop an understanding of the Raku process, including firing and post-firing reduction techniques.


Sculpting From a Life Model In Clay - Portrait Head Develop your sculpting skills and work from a model to produce a portrait head. Patchwork - A Quilt from Start to Finish You will study patchwork and quilting from choosing fabric, using a rotary cutter right through to how to put a quilt together. A different block (pattern) and/or a technique will be covered week by week. This is a course for beginners but can also be used as a refresher course. Please note that to make a complete quilt it will take one year. The tutor will have fabric that you can buy. Tools and equipment will be needed but these can be borrowed in class before you buy your own.




Silver Jewellery Making All levels of experience are welcome on this course, which will show you how to design and make your own silver jewellery. There is an additional cost of £10 payable to the tutor at the first session to cover the cost of the silver.

Reiki 1 Reiki (universal energy) is a gentle healing discovered in 1922 by the Japanese master Mikao Usui and passed down as a lineage from master to student. This course will cover the history, how to run and use Reiki for healing. You will receive the attunements as well as the lineage. Reiki 1 is mainly for self healing but you can use the energy on your pets, plants or home. You can run energy for others but not as a Reiki practitioner. Please bring a pillow and a blanket.

Curry and Spice 1 Our original curry club - from Morocco to Thailand via India and the Middle East. Curry and Spice 2 Owing to the popularity of Curry Cub 1 here is another batch of curries to excite your taste buds - beef rending, pork satay, paneer in chilli tomato sauce, Thai red prawn curry and lots more. Delicious Desserts This course features delicious desserts, scrummy puddings, melt in the mouth pastries, chocolate heaven, souffles and mousses, sticky toffee cake, frangipane tart and Crème brûlée. It will also teach you tricks and techniques for stunning presentation. The approximate cost of ingredients will be £8-£12 per week and ingredients will be supplied for the first session. Fish and Seafood With a wealth of fish virtually on our doorstep, we can make more of this bounty. This course teaches you what to buy, what to look for and how to prepare fish, crustacea and shellfish, turning them into fantastic dishes that will include crab linguine, mussel pilaff, sole with leeks and ginger, Sussex smokie and posh fish cakes. The approximate cost of ingredients to buy will be £8-£12 per week and ingredients will be supplied for the first session. Please bring an apron, tea towel and dish cloth to each session.


French Provincial Cooking If you’re fed up with fast food, bland food and ready meals and would like to get creative in the kitchen and experiment with new flavours then this course is for you. Rural French cooking at its best. We cover four regions - the South West, Alsace, Provence and Normandy. Cook classic cassoulet, chicken with apples and calvados, provencale fish soup and lots more. The approximate cost of ingredients to buy each week will be £8-12 per week but ingredients for the first week are supplied by the college. Please bring an apron, dish cloth and tea towel to every lesson.



Pan Asian Cooking Come and sample some fragrant flavours from the Far East. This course covers dishes from Japan, China, Vietnam, Malaya and Sri Lanka. From Singapore noodles to sushi, crispy duck to terikayi spare ribs, crab and pork spring rolls, and five spice chicken. The approximate cost of ingredients to buy will be £8-12 per week but ingredients for the first week will be supplied by the college. Please bring an apron, dish cloth and tea towel to every lesson.



Passionate Baking This is a course for bakers who have a little experience and wish to expand their repertoire with recipes including pithivier, chocolate torte, glazed fruit tartlets, summer pimms cake, pain au chocolat and panettone. The approximate cost of buying ingredients will be £5-6 per week but ingredients for the first week will be supplied by the college. Please bring an apron, dish cloth and tea towel to every lesson.


Sugar Craft and Cake Decorating From complete beginners to those with more experience, you will learn or improve sugar craft and cake decorating techniques through demonstration, hands on experience, individual and group learning in a friendly and supportive class. By the end of the course you will be able to decorate a celebration or novelty cake. The first class is demonstration only. Please bring apron, dish/tea cloth notebook and pen. You will need to supply your own materials. The class is mixed ability so students can learn at their own level and can also learn from each other.







Vegetarian Gourmet 1 You don’t need to be a vegetarian to enjoy meat-free meals. Learn interesting and tasty vegetarian dishes for discerning people. Learn how to get wonderful flavours into your dishes with stuffed butternut squash, leek and tarragon quiche, and tagine of sweet potatoes. You will get lots of useful ideas, practical tips and inspiration. The cost of ingredients will be approximately £8-£12 per week. Ingredients will be supplied for the first session. Please bring an apron, dish cloth and tea towel to each lesson.


Vegetarian Gourmet 2 The second part of our vegetarian course includes twice baked cheese soufflés, mushroom pancakes, spinach and cheese cannelloni, savoury bread and butter pudding and sweetcorn fritters with avocado salsa. The cost of ingredients will be approximately £8-£12 per week. Ingredients will be supplied for the first session. Please bring an apron, dish cloth and tea towel.



Access to Higher Education Diploma : Humanities Combined With Social Science This pathway prepares people for humanities, arts and social science degrees and may also be suitable for students who want to go on to social work or progress onto a subject specific degree, which is required for teaching in secondary schools. The pathway offers a range of modules in humanities, arts and social sciences.




Beginners IT Ideal for people of any age who have never touched a computer before and would like to know the basics. We will cover switching the computer on/off, accessing programmes such as Word and use of toolbars, menus, icons and de-mystifying jargon. We will learn how to get on-line, basic navigating and searching, sending and replying to emails and effective use of the Internet.

You Can Do It Next Steps Building on the basic skills gained on the You Can Do IT course, you will be introduced to spreadsheets, email attachments and how to refine internet searches.


HNC in Film This Level 4 course focuses on the practical skills required to create professional standard film productions and includes analytical modules on film history and film analysis. Create short narrative and conceptual film work whilst improving your cinematography, editing, lighting and sound design skills. Academic research modules run alongside practical projects to ensure that you are prepared for future study and employment. Projects will be set by external clients and visiting film industry professionals. A live production office will be operating giving HNC students the opportunity to complete external professional work. A work-related course and is loosely equivalent to a first year at university, vocationally focused. It could be a great stepping stone up to a higher qualification, as you can also choose to ‘top up’ with extra studies at a later date, in order to convert to a full bachelor’s degree.

Guitar for Absolute Beginners This course is for those who want to learn acoustic guitar and have no previous experience. All you need is a guitar, a tuner and a desire and commitment to learn. You will learn with others how to play the sort of songs that you can sing along to around the proverbial campfire, as well as learn the basics of guitar theory that will enable you to learn further and grow as a guitarist. Fed up with trying to learn on your own? Come along and learn the basics that will put you on the right road to competent guitar playing.



Access to Higher Education Diploma : Medicine On this course you will study science to underpin any future medical training. The course is aimed at students who wish to go to medical school to train as doctors. The course has been developed by Sussex Downs College with the Brighton and Sussex Medical School.


Access To Higher Education - Combined Sciences Our Combined Sciences Access course prepares people for degree-level study on a variety of Science-related degree courses and non-Nursing health-related degree courses. Many of our students go on to the Universities of Sussex, Brighton and Chichester (guaranteed interviews and guaranteed places are offered for some courses at these universities). An increasing number of our students gain places at universities throughout Britain. The Access Courses is ‘QAA approved’, which means that it is validated by LASER Learning Awards (formerly Open College Network).



Access to Higher Education Diploma : Teacher Education Our Access courses prepare people for degree-level study in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Teacher Education, Sciences and Health Studies.
