We are delighted that you are interested in finding out more about studying at Sussex Downs International College. We are a high quality college based in the beautiful South Downs area of South East England. We have two campuses: one on the south coast at Eastbourne and one in the historic county town of Lewes.

We are a government college with accreditation from the British Council for our English language provision. In our 2014 British Council inspection report we achieved 12 out of 15 strengths, and we therefore retain our position as one of the top English language providers in the UK.*

We have over 3,500 full-time UK students in addition to 400 international students from around 40 different countries. This rich mix of cultures and backgrounds makes for a vibrant, exciting and welcoming learning community.

We are very proud of our students and their achievements. Examination results are consistently outstanding; the GCE A level pass rate in 2014 for international students was 99%. Our students have progressed to Oxford, Cambridge, LSE and to many other top universities and conservatoires including those outside the UK such as Harvard University and the University of Hong Kong.

We hope that this prospectus will give you a clear idea of what we have to offer. Our website www.sussexdowns.ac.uk/international will give you up-to-date information on the work and activities of our students and staff, and we encourage you to look at this too.

Sussex Downs College is definitely the place if you are seeking high quality learning, new experiences and meeting people from a wide range of backgrounds. We look forward to welcoming you!

Eastbourne is a world-famous seaside resort with eight kilometres of unspoilt beaches. It is a fun place to be a student with a lively nightlife and plenty of attractions including a large shopping centre. Eastbourne has received many national awards such as “Best UK Resort”, “Tourism Destination of the Year”, and “Most Welcoming Town in Britain”.

Lewes is a historic town offering a peaceful and typically English experience. It features cosy restaurants and cafes, many independent shops and a wonderful castle. It is a town rich in culture

and is considered to be safe and welcoming by our international students. The university city of Brighton & Hove can be reached in just 13 minutes by train from Lewes.

Both campuses include a high-achieving sixth form centre making them an excellent choice for both academic and vocational students. They also feature well-established English language centres which offer English language tuition throughout the entire year. Eastbourne has its own IELTS test centre. Sussex Downs College is one of the few government colleges to offer this.

“My hosts are very kind to me. They provide me with good food and a good study environment. They really care about me and they are just like my second parents in the UK. I normally eat dinner with them and they always try to involve me in the conversation, which helps me to increase my confidence and feel like part of the family. Living in a homestay was one of the most memorable experiences of my time in the UK. I am learning about UK life and culture, as well as improving my English speaking skills. I would definitely recommend living in homestay accommodation to students.” (Vietnam)

The University of the Arts London (UAL) is the Awarding Body for the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design course. They are the only awarding body for specialist art, design and creative industries in England and only work with a few selected colleges who meet their very high standards. The course specification is designed by UAL and students achieve two qualifications: the UAL Diploma: Foundation Studies in Art and Design and the UAL Level 3 Certificate in Drawing.

The Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is an intensive, practical and exciting one year course, designed to prepare you for an art or design-based degree programme. All tutors are practicing artists, designers and craftsmen and women who will support you throughout your course and encourage you to develop your creative and analytical skills. The programme begins with diagnostic study in all areas of art & design. You will then specialize in a particular area such as: fine art, graphics & illustration, fashion & textiles, 3D, product & interior design, or photography.

Our students have recently gained places at top UK art colleges and universities such as Central St. Martins, London College of Fashion, London College of Communication, Ravensbourne, Winchester School of Art, University College London and The University of Edinburgh.

A Foundation Degree is studied over two years and is equivalent to two years of a traditional honours degree. It is a qualification in itself and many students gain employment or decide to study for one more year by doing a top-up year to complete an Honours Degree.

All Sussex Downs College foundation degrees are validated by the University of Brighton. This means that you will have access to many sources of support and facilities both at Sussex Downs College and the University of Brighton to help you succeed.
