THREADS OF HOPE
Balboa Women’s THREADS OF HOPE outreach sewing ministry has, once again, been
requested to help those in need. Teen Challenge has requested THREADS OF HOPE to make
pillowcases for their graduates. It is a blessing to everyone involved in the outreach sewing
ministry when someone in our community or surrounding area requests our help. We have
seen God’s hand in all that we do, and we know that He has provided. He has answered our
prayers in ways we could not have imagined. THREADS OF HOPE does not have a designated
budget, and our fabric, supplies, and funds are donated by BBC members, individuals in our
community, surrounding areas, and states. God has also provided workers, not only BBC
members, but residents of the Village, to help accomplish our mission. THREADS OF HOPE is
praying for more BBC members who sew to join us in our outreach efforts. If you have not
seen how the pillowcases are made, we encourage you to join us. Please mark your calendar
to join us on Thursday, May 23, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm in Room 115, Fellowship Hall as we
make “burrito” pillowcases. The only thing required is a desire to serve those in need. If you
sew, please bring your sewing machine, notions for sewing cotton, and neutral-colored
thread. All fabric will be cut, pinned and ready for sewing. If you do not sew or don’t want
to sew, we still need your help with pinning, pressing fabric, signing notes of encouragement
and attaching to each pillowcase. Please call or text Sue Griggs, 501-984-1401 to reserve the
delicious lunch that will be prepared by Balboa Women’s Ministry. Warm coffee cake and
hot coffee will be waiting for you!

As a church family we are blessed with these people who give of their time weekly and also
on special occasions at Easter, Christmas, God and Country and other times. It is my pleasure
to serve with these fine people and to lead this great congregation in the worship of God
each week.
As we do this we also ask the congregation to voice your appreciation to them and also pray
for all of these who serve that the Lord would bless them in their service and also that new
persons to come in and add to these ministries to use their gifts and talents.
The Arkansas Youth Chorale ~ June 2 @ 6 pm
On June 2 during our evening service, we will be hosting The Arkansas Youth Chorale under
the direction of Rev. Thomas Havens. This is an auditioned group of 30 young people from
the Little Rock area of churches. One of the young people in the group is Glenda and Wayne
Seabaugh’s grandson, Jack. This choir has been here once before about 5 years ago. We
encourage you to place this fine group on your calendars and attend. You will be greatly
blessed to hear them.
Soli Deo Gloria!

We want to begin by thanking our “library friends” for continuing to gift us with books and media
that you can enjoy and learn from. We really appreciate each of you who have given us these
books which we now have ready for you to check out:
America Looks Up is based on Psalm 11:3-4 which tells us God is undeterred by our prob-
lems; buildings have fallen but He hasn’t; He is still in control.
Soul Food brings us daily devotionals harking back to the Lord ’s Prayer “Give us this day
our daily bread.”
Voices of the Faithful: Inspiring Stories of Courage from Christians Serving Around the
World by Beth Moore.
You’ve Got to Be Kidding, I thought This Was the Great Tribulation! (Cathy Lechner)
Snow Melts in Spring (Deborah Vogts) brings us the story of a young lady who is a large
animal veterinarian and is trying to make a place for herself in the tallgrass prairie of Kansas. She
is called on to save an injured horse and has to overcome and ends up in the middle of a family
conflict.
A Gilbert Morris historical fiction titled Santa Fe Woman takes us to the severe economic de-
pression of the 1800s.
Love Finds You at Last Chance, California (Ferrell) is set in 1877 when we find that Alexia
Travers is alone in the world. Her father died unexpectedly and leaves her burdened with a heavily
mortgaged horse ranch.
There are several very good reads in the group of slightly worn books. Come by and check them
out; you’ll be glad you did.
New books for you to check out include two of Joanne Bischof’s Blackbird Mountain Novels:
Sons of Blackbird Mountain (a haunting tale of struggle and redemption and a portrait of
grace in a world where the broken find a new life through the healing mercy of love) and Daughters
of Northern Shores (a story of regret and redemption, boldness and sacrifice).
Also, we have the second book in the Blue Ridge Mountain Novels, Honeysuckle Dreams and
from the Hope Harbor series (Hannon) comes Driftwood Bay. A new DVD for you to watch brings
us the true story of an Olympian and war hero, Louis “Louie” Zamperini, a drama that follows his life
and was adapted from the book “Seabiscuit: An American Legend.”
We hope you will COME BY and CHECK US OUT!

Flawless Youth Night Out - Samaritan Ministries
As part of their focus on missions and service, five members of the
Balboa Baptist Church Flawless Youth program selected Samaritan
Ministries-Gospel Rescue Mission for Men as a starting point to share
their services. The Flawless Youth were joined by five members of the
AWANA program, who will graduate to the Flawless Youth in the new
school year. Together they intermingled to share their enthusiasm and
compassion by serving a hot, tasty spaghetti dinner to some very grate-
ful men at the Mission. The kindness and smiles shared by the team as
they worked among these men brought many comments from
those they touched while there. This group truly displayed
hearts of service and God’s love through their actions, and we
are very proud of them. We hope this to be only the first of
many mission opportunities the group will engage in.
There will be NO meeting for Flawless Youth after May 8
until after Labor Day. Have a great summer!

RICK & IRIS TYLER This pleasant couple grew up in Shreveport, LA in the same neighborhood,
attended the same church, graduated from the same HS and went their
separate ways. Both were busy with their education and careers and then—
after thirty-eight years—reconnected and became husband and wife four
years ago!
Rick has a BA in physics and math from Baylor. While awaiting entry to
med school, he used his physics degree as an oil well logging engineer for
Shlumberger LTD—an oil field service company. His medical degree was
awarded by LSU/Shreveport and his residency was with the University of Virginia/Roanoke. He
practiced medicine in rural NC for three years and then practiced family and occupational medicine in
Texarkana, TX for 17 years. BTW: Detecting the gentleness in Rick’s voice during this interview
(while he was driving from Searcy to Stuttgart), it is evident his bedside manner as a physician was
tender. He left private practice in 2007 to move into the administrative side of medicine for Christus
St. Elizabeth in SE Texas until he and Iris moved to the Village in 2017. He is now with the Baptist
Health System, traveling to 37 clinics throughout the state and is charged with overseeing each
clinic’s participation in the government aided insurance (re: MEDICARE).
Iris’ life has been a whirlwind of activity! After HS she moved to Dallas to enter the airline industry.
She was a marketing account executive for FedEx and DHL for 17 years and then to SW Airlines as
an account executive and as a flight attendant. While a flight attendant, she studied radiological
medicine through Colorado Tech, receiving a degree in radiology. In this new field of endeavor, she
became an MRI technologist, and was the administrator for a large group of radiologists in Kansas
City. She moved back to Shreveport to care for her mom and began working for the same hospital
group Rick was with as a physician relations manager...the rest is history!!! They have a blended
family of three daughters, one son, and eight grandchildren.
Not only have Rick and Iris been busy with their careers, but also are enjoying each other on trips in
their camper and motorcycles. One of their favorite vacations was a three-month motor trip to the
West and Northwest U.S.
Note: They had several contacts in our church: Judy Barton is Iris’ first cousin; she and Charles
invited them to Balboa; Rick attended Sunset Baptist Church in S’port where Bill Adams was his SS
teacher. They are so happy to become a part of our fellowship. You will enjoy getting to know this busy
couple!

DENNIS & JANICE FORSHEE Both Dennis and Janice grew up and lived most of their lives
in the Shreveport/Bossier, LA area.
Dennis graduated Bossier High and entered LA Tech as a
geology major. Due to a lengthy illness, and the downturn of
the economy, he changed majors and graduated with a
bachelor’s degree in general studies. After college, he was in
sales and management in the heavy construction equipment rental business. He worked for
several large rental companies, and then along with Janice, they became proprietors of the
Wild Bird Center on Youree Drive in Shreveport. Janice related that for the 15 years they
were there, God opened many doors for them and they were very successful in that business.
She assisted Dennis after her “day joy.” After graduating HS, Janice began working for
SWEPO (Electric Co.) for sever years and then began working for the U.S. Postal Service,
retiring from there after a 26-year career. She and Dennis had always liked Arkansas and she
wanted to live on a mountain. So...after visiting a friend of Janice’s sister, they were more
resolute in moving here. After their second visit, they found their present home and moved
here in 2017. They both are enjoying the hiking trails in the Village, and like their leisure time
of reading and bird watching. They have a blended family of four children and one grandson,
who is a college student in Shreveport.
They, too, had visited other churches, and after visiting Balboa several times, they were
impressed not only by the friendliness of the people, but with the Pastor’s preaching. They
moved their membership from their home church in Bossier City in December of last year.
They happily attend the Faith SS class taught by Bob and Jody Moore. Please say hello to the
friendly “Southerners,” you will be blessed.
