November Mission Project –BWM - 2020

For Christians, Christmas is a wonderful time of year. But for many, Christmas can be an extremely lonely time. BWM thought of the women housed in the Garland County Detention Center who will be away from their families during this Christmas season. Many do not have the resources to even send a Christmas card or note to their loved ones. Even thought the pandemic has stopped BWM from meeting, we wanted to try to reach out to some of these women in need. So, we decided to donate boxes of Christmas cards, stationery, envelopes and stamps to the Detention Center, which will enable many to contact their loved ones during the Christmas season. On Thursday, December 3 Balboa Women’s Mission Activity Group presented these items to Chaplain Dennis Brown. BWM also gave him a check for five hundred dollars to pay for workbooks for his next Bible study at the jail—The Purpose Driven Life. Our church library also donated a box of soft-bound Bibles and religious books for use by the jail inmates. Upon discussion, we also realized so many of these women will not receive even one Christmas card. To remedy this, one of our newer members, Susan West, composed a beautiful Christmas letter—a letter of hope, prayer and encouragement. This letter will be sent to each inmate in the hope that they will know someone loves them and that they will come to know Jesus Christ.

Left to right: Judy Reed, Susan West, Elaine Ryp-kema, Chaplain Dennis Brown, Glenda Boysen, Rita Weeks (these ladies are part of the BWM Missions team and are presenting the $500 check for Bible Study materials along with the beautiful Christmas cards, stamps to mail the cards and devotional literature for ladies incar-cerated at Garland County Detention Center)

The letter below, written by Susan West, was given to each female inmate. Dear Ladies,

It is our joy to wish you a very Merry Christmas. Although you may not be with those you

love this time of year, remember you are never alone. In the book of Matthew in the Bible,

an angel announced the coming birth of Jesus to His earthly father Joseph. The angel said

“Behold, a virgin shall be with child and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,

meaning ‘God with us’.” So you see, if you have asked Christ into your heart, you are never

alone. He is always with you, and He has promised never to leave you or forsake you.

One of the favorite images we see at Christmastime is a nativity scene. There will be shep-

herds, and wisemen, and maybe a few sheep and camels. There’s got to be an angel and, of

course, Mary and Joseph. And the central focus of all nativity scenes is the Baby Jesus, laying

on a bed of hay in a manger. But Jesus didn’t stay a baby. He grew and had experiences like

all people---skinned His knee, laughed with friends, grew up in a family, and became a car-

penter like his father before Him. But unlike the rest of humanity, He was God who came to

earth in the form of man to die as the payment for our sins. When we ask Him to forgive us

of our sins, He promises to come into our heart and make us new people. 2nd Corinthians

5:17 says “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed

away; behold, all things have become new.” Have you asked Jesus Christ to come into your

heart and make you a new creation? I promise---it’s the most important and best decision

you’ll ever make.

Again, we wish all of you a blessed Christmas and a wonderful 2021. We will be praying for

you during this time of year that God will fill your hearts with His peace and His presence.

Your sisters in Christ,

The Balboa Baptist Church Women’s Ministry

From the Library Corner:

Is it good to see 2020 come to an end?

Time is a constant. We can close our eyes, hold our breath as long as we dare, fly faster

than the speed of sound, even stop the clock ticking in the hall; but we are unable to stop

the time clock that God set up in the beginning of creation. In fact, scientists can’t even

agree on how long ago creation happened. But the truth is: time continues to be expended

at the same constant speed, never stopping. Isn’t that truth amazing? Isn’t it comforting to

know God has a plan and we were not and we are not just an experiment? It’s also

comforting to know God’s plan includes us and He isn’t finished with us yet.

If you want to know more about God’s plan for the end times, read the book Revelation in

a Bible with good references, and there also are great reference books in our library to study.

Also there have been and will continue to be classes offered from time to time (there’s that

word “time” again) to help understand the end times right here at the church.

Now, if you are looking for a plan for the rest of your life, talk to one of our pastors, or

your Bible Study leader, or a Christian friend. Any of us will be happy to help you find your

way, as God does have a plan for each of us.

Remember we need to learn how to spend our time wisely. We cannot just hold onto it,

for this minute is already just a memory. “I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them, I

shall use them.” Jack London

As we start the New Year there will be 365 days, each one a gift,

and God only promises us this day. How will you use it?

DOUG & JAYNE ANN ROUNTREE

Doug and Jayne Ann have been teachers at

Fountain Lake for 33 years. Doug teaches U.S.

History, World History, Civics and Geography. He has

also coached football, basketball, baseball, track,

softball and golf. For fun he drives a school bus.

Jayne Ann teaches math in grades 5-12. She serves

as co-director of the Miss Fountain Lake Pageant at

Fountain Lake Schools.

Doug was born in Little Rock, grew up in Levy and graduated from Sylvan Hills

High School. He graduated from Henderson State University with a BSE in Physical

Education with a minor in Social Sciences. While a student there he was a pitcher on

the school baseball team. Doug’s dream of a baseball career ended with an injury so

he started teaching and coaching in Hooks, Texas.

Jayne Ann was born and grew up in Gurdon where she graduated from high

school. She decided she wanted to be a math teacher when she was in the 5th

grade. She earned her BSE in Mathematics at Henderson State University. She later

earned her MSE in Educational Theories and Practices from Arkansas State

University.

Doug and Jayne Ann met at Henderson State University and later married. They

have 3 grown children and 3 grands. Doug’s hobbies are music and sports of all

kinds. He looks forward to serving on the SMT. Jayne Ann wants to be involved in

outreach, fellowship, women’s ministries and maybe as a greeter.

Doug was saved as a child at Faith Missionary Baptist Church in Little Rock. Jayne

Ann was saved 20 years ago at Walnut Valley Baptist Church in Hot Springs.

Charles and Tracy Oxner invited them to visit Balboa in July and they have been

attending ever since. We warmly welcome them into our church family. When you

meet this happy, outgoing couple ask Doug a sports question and he will have the

answer.

JIM & JOHANNA HAMILTON

(No Picture Available)

Jim and Johanna moved to the Village in 2003 after looking at several places for a

retirement home. They bought a home on Lake Coronado. The Hamiltons attended

Village Bible for 15 years and were led to visit Balboa Baptist by their daughter and

son-in-law, Michelle and Darin Watson. They joined the church by statement in Oct.

of this year.

Jim is originally from Memphis. After High School he attended Ole Miss and

completed his education at Memphis State. Jim worked for a newspaper in Memphis

for 36 years, doing most every job needed, and was the newspaper manager when

he retired.

Johanna was from Ft. Smith but moved to Memphis in 1970. She and Jim met on a

blind date. It seems this was successful as they just celebrated their 50th wedding

anniversary.

Jim was saved at age 13 at Temple Baptist Church in Memphis. Johanna was

saved at Parkway Baptist in Memphis at the age of 28.

After they moved to the Village, they were active in golf and fishing, but like many

of us, they had to give up golf. They have fished over much of North America with

many great experiences in Canada and Alaska. Johanna enjoys Bible study with

Precept Ministries and is also active in the CH chapter of PEO.

KAREN FORREST

Karen was born and raised in Jonesboro, Arkansas. By the 3rd

grade she was studying piano, as well as having an interest in

volleyball and basketball. As she progressed into high school

she was on the yearbook staff and her senior year she was the

editor. She was the Christmas Belle of Jonesboro, Arkansas and

at one time did hair commercials. She married in 1984 and has

always worked at either a pharmacy or in a doctor’s office. She

totaled 6 years of work at a combination of the East Gate

Pharmacy and the Medicine Shop at the west gate.

In 1997 she moved to the Village because her husband was

called by Walnut Valley Baptist Church to be its pastor. She came and helped build the

house she still lives in. Just four years ago, in 2016, her husband was called to his next

assignment in Heaven.

Karen is a big-time animal lover. She has provided a home for dogs, birds, a goat, a

miniature horse and an alpaca.

She has 2 daughters. One is a kindergarten teacher at Fountain Lake, the other daughter

is at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK where she works for the university in the

accessor’s office.

The most exciting thing to happen recently in Karen’s life was the birth of her

granddaughter 10 months ago.

Karen considers herself an official taste tester and no one seems to disagree with her.

She is also known for the desserts she makes.

Traveling is something Karen loves to do and Washington D.C. seems to be her favorite

destination.

Karen has a claim to fame: with a .22 rifle, she can shoot a tin can off a fence many

yards away.

She loves the Lord and loves to serve Him. She attends the Doers Bible Class where Phil

Morrow is the teacher. She is a very joyous person and if you manage to meet her, you’ll

consider yourself lucky. I do.

BRIAN & REGINA CASTLEMAN

Regina was born in Aurora, Missouri and spent the first 6

years of her life there. Brian’s early childhood was spent in rural

western Oregon. In 1956 both Brian and Regina’s families

moved to the Bakersfield, California area. When Regina was 11

years old, she was saved at a revival in a Baptist church. When

she was 37 years old, she rededicated her life and was

baptized.

Both her parents and Brian’s parents belonged to a fraternal

social group connected to their life insurance policies. Regina and Brian met at a teen

gathering at the social group in 1966. They married in 1970 while they were still in college

and soon started a family. Regina decided to drop out of college until the children were in

school.

Brian continued in college, studying to be a teacher. However, he decided to seek

temporary employment in order to support family living expenses and it just so happened

that he accepted a management training position at a regional bank. Over 44 years he

worked in several banks in Oregon as a loan officer, a branch manager and finally a part-

time credit analyst. He never became a teacher—which was his goal when he began

college. In 2015 he stepped down from his officer position because of health issues and

worked as a part-time credit analyst fully retiring in late 2017. Over the years he served in

various community volunteer positions including school board and chambers of commerce,

Lions and Rotary clubs.

Meanwhile, Regina finished her education and taught primary education for almost 20

years including Kindergarten for 15 years. She and another teacher wrote the kindergarten

curriculum for their school district. Her current interests are reading, sewing, gardening,

walking, and hiking. Both Brian and Regina were very active in the church they came from.

Regina was on the missions committee and played a leadership role in the Franklin Graham

Christmas Box program. Brian was part of the safety/security team. He says his interests

are camping, hiking, home improvement and shooting.

In the mid-1980’s Brian became an assistant scout master and beginning with Boy Scout

Sunday began attending church. Through his friendship with the scout master and pastor

he came to a relationship with Jesus Christ and was saved in 1986. He is a Gideon, and is

still part of a Bible Study Group involving 11 churches that meet every Thursday morning via

Zoom.

They are both members of and active in the Pathfinders Bible Class and we are so happy

to have them.
