BWM Events in March!

MAR 1 FIRST SUNDAY FOOD DONATIONS

Food donations are given to Owensville Baptist Church on Highway 5. Folks living in our vicinity need help in providing enough food for their families. Many of those needing assistance are grandparents taking care of their grandchildren. Give with a generous heart!

MAR 5 FIRST THURSDAY PRAYER TIME

All ladies (this means You!) are invited to join us on the first Thursday of each month for our one-hour prayer time. Each month brings new ladies with a heart to pray for our country, state, village, church, and each other. No one is asked to pray aloud. Contact Darlene Phillips at 501-922-2844 if you have questions or need additional information. We hope to see you March 5th from 10am-11am in the Welcome Bible Class room.

MAR 12 GIRLS, GAMES & GOODIES

Ladies are invited to Girls, Games, & Goodies on March 12th in the "Big Room" of the Outreach Center. This is a wonderful opportunity to invite a friend or neighbor to come and join the fun and introduce them to Balboa Baptist Church. Bring your Brown Bag lunch and a nonperishable food item for Harvey's Chapel. We will have coffee, tea, and great morning snacks for you to enjoy. The “Big Room” opens at 9am and games are finished by 2pm. Contact Kathy Foust at 501-922-3208 to sign up or for more information. MAR 26 THREADS OF HOPE

Ladies are invited to Threads of HOPE from 9am-3pm on March 26th in Room 115 (Fellowship Hall). The Crocheting/Knitting group and Fidget Mats group meet at the same time and place as Threads of Hope. Please join us to find out how easy it is to be a blessing to someone and receive a blessing yourself!

Threads of HOPE will continue making pillowcases for Hospice patients in homes and inpatient facilities. The pillowcases are easy to make and provide comfort to Hospice patients and a lasting blessing for their families. If you have not made a “Burrito” pillowcase, please join us. There are several steps involved in making the pillowcases, and helpers are needed, in addition to those who sew.

April Catlett, crochet and knitting instructor, will continue teaching how to make lap robes. Lap robes are easy to make and needed by those in Memory Care facilities, patients in cancer treatment, and those in Hospice care. The group will also continue making slipper socks. If you do not know how to crochet or knit, April would love to teach you.

Kits for making Fidget Mats for women will be available for you to take home, complete, and return at the April meeting.

If you sew, please bring your sewing machine, notions for sewing cotton, and neutral-colored thread. All fabric will be cut, pinned, and ready for sewing. If you do not sew or do not want to sew, your help is needed with pinning, assembling fabric for sewing, pressing fabric, assembling project kits, and signing notes of encouragement to be included with the finished project. If you crochet or knit and have crochet hooks or circular knitting needles you would like to use, please bring them. If not, yarn and needles will be provided.

Coffee, coffee cake, and a delicious lunch will be provided for you in appreciation for volunteering to Help Other People Everywhere. To have a correct count for lunch, please call or text Sue Griggs at 501-984-1401.

The New Member-Returning Visitor Luncheons are held throughout the year and provide a wonderful opportunity for new members and returning visitors to learn more about Balboa Women’s Ministry and the many opportunities to serve at Balboa. Alice Weith hosted a luncheon at her home for three new members on Monday, February 10th. New members attending were Kathy Miramontes, Melissa Kirk, and Jo Ann Sypert. The luncheon was a wonderful time of fellowship and provided a relaxed atmosphere to ask questions and share information.

Easter Services at Balboa March 22 through April 12. We will again celebrate Easter for 4 weeks this year. Included in these 4 services will be

Easter songs that relate to the last week and passion of our Lord Jesus. The messages will

also correspond to this theme. These services begin on March 22. They continue on March

29, April 5 and culminate on April 12 (Easter Sunday). We hope you will invite people to

come to all these services and especially friends and family who need to be saved.

Choir, Orchestra, Bells and Praise Teams are open for membership. We encourage all musicians to consider joining with us in Choir, the Praise Team, Orchestra, or Handbells.

Jubilation Jazz Is Coming March 29 at 4 pm in the Outreach Center. These are brass, woodwind and percussion ministers and players from churches all over Arkansas. They are

very good and will present lots of well-known gospel tunes in a Jazzy way. Come and be blessed.

April 9: Maundy Thursday Service at 6 pm. We will commemorate the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples before His crucifixion. Come and join us.

May 31: An exciting Youth Choir from Ashdown is coming to be with us in the morning services.

This will be a real treat for us.

July 26: Our Sunday School Picnic in the OC, featuring David Ragan. David sings baritone / lead with the New South Quartet in Branson at the Grand Palace Music Hall. This will

be an exciting picnic celebration.

August 30: We will host Scot Cameron again in Concert in the Sanctuary. Scot was here early

last year and just amazed us with his fine voice and talent. He will present a variety of music in addition to

Gospel tunes and will include some famous Broadway tunes as well.

We hope to see you here each Sunday to share our Lord’s praise and grace.

Serving joyfully with you,

Pastor Jim, Minister of Music

As we close out the month of February, the library committee is hopeful that you found a few books to

read during the winter months. If you have read a book that you enjoyed and hope others would enjoy, we

would like to hear from you. We are always looking for good books to buy and the books in our own library

to recommend to others.

Darlene Phillips has read many books in our library, both fiction and non-fiction. Below is a review of one

of the books that she and others found interesting and informative.

“The novel Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate, is not for those wanting to read a lighthearted and

happy-go-lucky book. The novel is based on the actual scandal that took place in the 1950’s and 60’s at the

Tennessee Children’s Home Society. Twelve-year-old Rill Foss, is the eldest daughter of five who live a happy

existence with their poor, but loving parents on a river shanty boat. Left alone when their dad must take

their mother to a hospital, corrupt police abduct them and deliver them to the Memphis-based so-called

home for ‘orphans’ (i.e. stolen children). Led to believe it will just be for a short stay until their parents can

get them, Rill soon realizes that isn’t the case.

The horrors all the abducted children at this house face is beyond belief. It is run by a cruel, money-hungry

woman named Georgia Tann whose famous, powerful and wealthy clientele will pay thousands of dollars for

beautiful young children to adopt. They believe the children have been orphaned and are thrilled with giving

them a home. Government officials choose to look the other way since they are compensated by Ms. Tann.

The story intertwines with a present-day tale about the attorney daughter of a US Senator. By a chance

encounter she learns some confusing news about her grandmother. Weaving the story of the past with the

present-day investigation that ensues leaves the reader unaware how they relate until almost the very end.

After reading this novel, I was struck by the resilience of the children as they lived with such longing for

their parents, yet knowing if they spoke about their past the repercussions were horrendous. This book will

stay on your mind long after it is finished. For me, knowing it was about a REAL occurrence, made it even

more difficult to continue reading, yet the writer skillfully compels the reader to know the ending.”

CARLA KROUT

Carla, also known as Corkie, was born in Lamesa, TX and still considers

herself a Texan, even though the family soon moved to Ojai, CA, where she

grew up and graduated high school. She married her high school sweetheart

and they had 2 sons, Ken, who still lives in Ojai, and Jeff, who we are blessed

to have here at Balboa Baptist Church to play keyboard for the Contemporary

service.

Carla worked as a secretary, and in the medical field. She has three

grandchildren; 2 in CA and 1 in TX.

Carla accepted Christ as Savior when she was twenty-one years old while

she listened to a recorded message of Billy Graham. When he gave the invitation, she readily accepted

and shared her good news with friends and family. She soon joined a local church and was baptized.

Her hobbies include quilting, golfing and reading. McGraw, her Yorkie Silkie mix terrier, is her friend

and companion.

Carla moved here in February 2019 from Ventura, CA to be with her son, Jeff. She visited several

churches and watched Balboa videos at home. She was drawn to Pastor Denny’s kind face and Biblical

messages. She was pleased to find friendly, caring people when she visited Balboa and soon joined. We

welcome Carla into our church family.

STEVE WEATHERS

Steve was born in Baltimore, Maryland, where he attended Mars Hill

Baptist Church. After he graduated high school, he was with the Army for 3

years. When he returned home he joined the Baltimore County Police

Department and was with them for 22 years. He left Maryland for 3 years to

work in Florida doing Crime Scene Investigation, came back, got a job with

the Maryland State Police, again doing Crime Scene Investigation, and then

later on became a finger-print examiner. During this time his first wife died

of complications from diabetes.

Three and a half years ago, on a golf trip to Myrtle Beach, Dana came into

his life. They were married and lived there for about a year before moving to HSV to be closer to his

sisters. He bought his mother’s house in the Coronado Golf Community after she passed and went to

work for the Saline County Sheriff’s Office. They’ve been here since July 2018 and love the diversity of

the Village. Steve even met someone living here whom he had worked with in Maryland.

He joined Balboa Baptist Church the first Sunday in January. Dana, having been unable to go to

church with him at first due to a work conflict, is now able to attend. When you see Steve going to the

Contemporary service, or working with the SMT Team, please welcome this great addition to our Church

Family.

TOM & JAN WOOD

Tom and Jan were born in the same hospital 11 days apart in Olean,

NY where they grew up and married when they were 18 years old.

They have 2 daughters, 2 grands and 1 great-grand.

Tom worked in the Christmas Industry for different companies. This

nomadic couple has lived in 9 states and 25 cities/towns and 2 other

countries with 44 moves during their marriage. Wow! They owned a

temporary-employment business for 6 years. During his younger years,

Tom found time to play in a rock band in his spare time.

When they were 32 years old they visited a Presbyterian Church in Livonia, MI. Two days later Pastor

Wally Hostetter visited them and led them to Christ.

Tom’s interest is in audio visual and he is already on the church team. He is also interested in graphic

design. Jan likes to cook, bake and read in her spare time. She is a Chairperson in the HSV Republican

Women’s Club.

Jan & Tom moved to the Village on April 27, 2018. They were drawn to Balboa’s Contemporary

Service and when they visited and heard the beautiful music and heard the Spirit-filled message, they felt

right at home. Welcome Tom and Jan into our fellowship and when you meet this wonderful couple, ask

Jan to bake you a cake!

DWAYNE & LYNDA SHIPMAN

Lynda was born in Corning, NY. Her parents then moved to

Rochester, NY where she grew up and graduated from high school.

Her grandmother introduced her to a Baptist church. Her favorite

subjects were math and science. While attending Northeaster

University in Boston, she decided a business degree was more to her

liking. One of her favorite hobbies growing up was skiing.

From Boston, she moved to San Diego, CA and then to

Maryland, where she worked for Enterprise Rental Company. She

moved back to CA and lived there for 16 years and then moved to Fort Worth, TX. She enjoyed

being a stay-at-home mom for 16 years. In 2007 she started work for Weatherford Campus as a

student financial aid advisor. After returning to church Lynda decided to walk the aisle in 2012,

giving her life a new direction.

Dwayne was born and raised in Corning, AR. He enjoyed football and hunting. He joined the AF

right after high school and retired after 22 years, having served in Europe, the Middle East and the

United States. After retiring at Cannon AFB, NM, Dwayne moved to Ft. Worth, TX where Lockheed

Martin used his experience as a bomb loader to modify aircraft.

Lynda and Dwayne met in 2012. They began a search for a church to attend together and found

Stonewater Church, Weatherford Campus. Dwayne prayed to receive Christ as his Lord and Savior

January 27, 2017 at a men’s retreat. They were baptized together on March 26, 2017.

While on a 2014 Valentines’s Day vacation trip to Hot Springs, they stopped in the Village. They

loved it and immediately bought a townhouse. After vacationing each year, they were able to retire

and had a new home built last year so they can enjoy the Village full-time. In November 2019 they

received a Welcome-to-the-Village package that indicated Balboa Baptist Church had a

Contemporary service. They decided to attend Balboa Baptist that week; and they have been

attending ever since. Together they have 4 children and 4 grandchildren. And they feel very blessed

to be members of Balboa Baptist Church.

And we are happy to have them in our midst!
