Artist captures amazing moments depicting Luthuli’s legacy
JYOTHI LALDAS
DURBAN businessman VivianReddy donated a collection ofpaintings valued at R3million
to the Luthuli Museum in Groutvilleon Friday honouring the legacy ofChief Albert Luthuli.
The collection of 10 paintings, named The Spirit of Chief Albert Lu-thuli Series, was painted by the lateartist Ronald Harrison who alsopainted the anti-apartheid piece TheBlack Christ, which depicted Luthulias Jesus being crucified by the thenprime minister Hendrik Verwoerdandhis justiceminister JohnVorster.
The collection, however, does notdepict Luthuli himself, but his idealsthrough which his spirit lives on.
Guests at the event included Lu-thuli family members, ANC GreaterKwaDukuza region chairpersonThokozani Msweli, secretary MuziSithole, KwaDukuza mayor RicardoMthembu, Harrison's niece and herhusband Desiree and Derek Phillips(Harrison lived with them before hisdeath) and Consul General of PolandAndrzej Kiepiela among others.
At the unveiling ceremony Luthu-li’s eldest daughter, Dr Albertina Lu-thuli spoke of how she had ap-
proached Reddy to “save” the paint-ings from being auctioned shortlybefore cancer claimedHarrison's lifein June 2011.
DrAlbertinasaidshefirstmetHar-rison in 2000 when she was a mem-ber of Parliament in Cape Town.
“Whilewe spokeHarrison toldmethe amazing story of how he met myfatherandwhyhedecidedtopainttheThe Black Christ.
“Through the help of the commu-nity, particularly the Indian commu-nity at the time, arrangements weremade forHarrison tomeetmy father.
“His description ofmeetingmy fa-ther really moved me. He told mewhenhemet himhe couldn’t take hiseyes off his [Luthuli's] face. He saidthere was something about his eyesthatspoketohim.Icouldunderstand.My father’s eyes were such that theytold stories.”
Following the painting of TheBlack Christ, Harrisonwas persecut-ed by the apartheid government andthe painting, which was displayed inStLuke’sChurch,CapeTownuntil thepolice gotwind of it, was smuggled toEngland.
“He cameout of the [experience] aphysically weakened man and henever really got his strength back,”
Luthuli said.DrAlbertinasaidHarrisonwasde-
tainedby the police andwas torturedfor information about thepainting.
“Some years later he painted thisseries.Hedidnotwant financialcom-pensation because, likemy father, hedid not care for money. I persuadedhimthatheneeded themoney tocarefor his ailing mother and sister.
He considered an auction, but Iwas concerned it would be lost toSouth Africa. That was when Reddycame in.”
Reddy saidhe felt heowed it toLu-thuliandthecountrytomakesurethepaintings found their way “home”.
“I bought thepaintings to keep thespirit of Luthuli alive. The paintingshave been out there for a while andnow they will return to their naturalhome in themuseum. It'swhere theybelong.”
Reddy said although he held therightstothecollection, proceedsfromreprints would go to charity.

Chief executive Cyril Gamede saidUmgeniWater had nine clear targetsfor the year and had achieved 91 percent of them.

that if they pickmushrooms from thewild,theymustmakesuretheyidenti-fy themushroombefore eating them.
Whilemostmushroomspeciesaresuitable for human consumption, asmall percentage of them aredeadly.
The warning follows incidents ofseveral families from the Happy Val-ley area being admitted to StangerHospital after consuming poisonousmushrooms picked from nearbyfields.
There is no rule to determinewhetheramushroomispoisonousornot,withsomeofthemostdeadlyspe-cies looking similar to those consid-ered safe.
Gayapershad encourages peopletoonlyeatmushroomstheyknowaresafe.
“There aremanymushrooms thatlook very edible, and they can be themost poisonous ones.
“There is amushroomcalled “TheDestroyingAngel”whichispresent inthe area.”
He said that if this mushroom isconsumed there is a 95 per centchance of dying.
“It looks like some of the edible
ones which is why people need to bemore aware.
“They are advised not to pickmushrooms from fields sprayedwithpesticides as well, as these are alsopoisonous,” he added.
Gayapershad said, “To avoid get-ting sick, follow this simple rule:Know the identity of the mushroomyouintendtoeat. Youmaybetold:“Anedible mushroom peels and does notblacken a spoon,” or “Mushroomsnibbled by animals are safe.”
“These and other rules of thumbare worthless. Eat only mushroomsyou know are edible.”

A bit about
PUPILS and parents will never forgetthe last year spent at school. Itmarks the endofanera and basically the beginning of a new chapter adulthood and the responsibilitiesthat come with it.
The countdown to the “most important examinations pupils willwrite” has begun as schools start toadd the final touches ahead of thewritten exams.
All eyes will once again focus onthe Department of Education aspresident Jacob Zuma highlightededucation in his State of the Nationaddress.
The former premier of KwaZuluNatal did the same in his Stateof the Province address.
At this stage the department isworking extremely hard to preventleaks. A department spokesperson
said all systems have been beefedup and they will be taking a strongstance against those with leakedpapers.
While all this takes place at ahigherlevel,theclassof2013arepreparing for the next step in their lives. Some will be burning the midnightoil and trying to cram as much astheycan, whileothersmightbemorerelaxed.

Preparing for the roadahead
THROUGH the years, I have found that peopleare quick to tell you what they love and whatthey hate.
But ask them what they want and theyhave to stop and think about it!
They can quickly tell you in general terms more money, a better marriage, a better joband so on.
However, few will give you specifics be
cause they haven't taken the time to figurethem out.
For example, in their careers, almost noone can tell me where they want to be in threeyears, five years or 10 years.
On the other hand, those who strive fortheir impossible dreams and achieve them, know exactly where they want to go and howthey want to get there.
WhenI'veaskedbusinessmenorbusinesswomen what they value most, they nearly always say their family, their friends or theirhealth. But there's a real disconnect betweenwhat they say and what they do.
Most people's daytoday priorities, whatthey think about, how they act, and how theyspend their time do not reflect their lives.
Nor do their priorities help them to achievewhat they've said they want most.
Most people's daily and weekly routinesreflect the demands and priorities of othersor follow the path of least resistance and ''go
with the flow.''When our daily activities do not reflect our
values and efforts to achieve what we reallywant, we end our days and weeks and yearsfrustrated and unfulfilled.
To experience greater levels of achievement and more contentment and fulfillment,we need to find ways that will motivate andsustain our actions and work.
We live in the most advanced, educated, civilised age in the history of mankind.
We have more wealth, more health andmaterial possessions than any other peoplein history.
And yet we consume more antidepressants and spend more time in hospitals andin the offices of therapists than ever before.
By discovering and deepening our “whys”,I believe we have the opportunity to bring ourlives and careers into line with our values.
If we do this, we will be more successfulin everything we do!

I READ an article in one of our local tabloids regarding progress made in providing adequate street lighting inStanger Manor a while ago.
The picture showed the mayor, along with a few municipal officialssmiling broadly during the "switch on".
The article also mentioned that ourmunicipality was starting to resurfaceroads in the area.
My mild excitement has now turnedinto complete horror at the conditionof our roads! The municipality has gailygone about stripping the tar complete
ly off a number of roads. Some sections of road have devel
oped potholes that are deep enough tocompletely engulf an average motorcar tyre. The roads that enclose an active business district (Daffodil Road,Geranium Street) have fallen prey tothese enthusiastic earthmovers.
Why was the resurfacing projectnot limited to one stretch of road at atime? Surely that would have limitedthe obvious damage and inconvenience that prevails presently?

RESPONDING to the article ‘Public Protectortoprobe’publishedintheWeekly(11October),Mandeni mayor Sphesihle Zulu said theInkatha Freedom Party (IFP) was looking for‘cheap’ publicity and also intended to under-mine the Mandeni community.
Speaking to the Weekly, Zulu explained:“Themunicipality isoutragedbythe ludicrousclaimsmadeby the IFPnational leadership tothe media by an organisation that should un-derstandbetter thatMandenihasefficient ad-ministrationwhich includes a few councillorsof the IFP.”
According to Zulu, council regarded the al-legations as being part of a broader ‘insult’ tothe IFP councillors from Mandeni who makea ‘meaningful’ contribution in running themunicipality.
“The IFP must attend to its political activi-ties and refrain from undermining the goodprogress of Mandeni community. These lameallegations are baseless and lack facts. ThemunicipalitythatwaspreviouslyledbytheIFPhad a lot of internal fights andwas financiallyweak.”
Zulu said the allegations were made to‘harm the integrity’ of themunicipality as the2014 elections were drawing close.
“It has nowbecome clear that we are deal-ing with IFP powermongers who cannot rec-ognise their local leadership who has beenpartof the threeconsecutiveunqualifiedauditopinions by Auditor General in last financialyears.”
The article published in the Weekly statedthatthePublicProtector,ThuliMadonselawasasked to probe claims of mismanagement insomeKwaZulu-NatalmunicipalitiesincludingMandeni.
It further stated that information was senttoMadonsela’sofficein2009thatMandenididnot renew the contract of Globe Tech SecurityCompany and instead brought in Enforce Se-curity Company.
A reliable source said thiswas ‘suspicious’because Globe Tech Security Company waspaid R60 000 per month, Enforce SecurityCompany’s payment was about four timesmore, approximately R260 000 per month.
Responding to these allegations Zulu saidEnforce Security was appointed by the previ-ous administration in 2009.
He said a forensic investigation was done.Zulu said the municipality should have been‘engaged’ before the allegations were made.
“Themunicipalitywill continue towork to-gethertoimproveourservicedeliveryinorderachieveourvision ‘Tobeareliablepeoplecen-tred sustainable economic hub by 2030’.”

HEADACHES in children are common andusually aren't serious. Like adults, childrencan develop different types of headaches, including migraine or stressrelated (tension) headaches. Children can also havechronic daily headaches.
In some cases, headaches in childrenare caused by an infection, high levels ofstress or anxiety, or minor head trauma. It'simportant to pay attention to your child'sheadache symptoms and consult a doctorif the headache worsens or occurs frequently. Headaches in children usually canbe treated with overthecounter painmedications and other lifestyle measures.
SYMPTOMSChildren get the same types of head
aches adults do, but their symptoms maydiffer. For example, a migraine in an adultusually starts early in the morning, but achild's is more likely to develop in the lateafternoon.
Also, migraine pain in children may lastless than four hours, whereas in adults, migraines last at least four hours. Such differences may make it difficult to pinpointheadache type in a child, especially in ayounger child who can't describe symptoms.
In general, though, certain symptomstend to fall more frequently under certaincategories.MigraineMigraines can cause:Pulsating, throbbing or pounding headpain
Pain that worsens with exertionNauseaVomitingAbdominal painExtreme sensitivity to light and soundEven infants can have migraines. A childwho's too young to tell you what's wrongmay cry and hold his or her head to indicatesevere pain.Tension-type headacheTension-type headaches can cause:A pressing tightness in the muscles of thehead or neckMild to moderate, nonpulsating pain onboth sides of the headPain that's not worsened by physical activityHeadache that's not accompanied by nausea or vomiting, as is often the case withmigraineYounger children may withdraw from regular play and want to sleep more. Tensiontype headaches can last from 30 minutesto several days.Cluster headacheCluster headaches are uncommon in children under 12 years of age. They usually:Occur in groups of five or more episodes, ranging from one headache every other
day to eight a dayInvolve sharp, stabbing pain on one side ofthe head that lasts from 15 minutes tothree hoursAre accompanied by teariness, congestion, runny nose, or restlessness or agitationChronic daily headacheDoctors use the phrase "chronic dailyheadache" (CDH) for migraine headachesand tensiontype headaches that occurmore than 15 days a month for more thanthree months. CDH may be caused by aninfection, minor head injury or taking painmedications — even nonprescription painmedications — too often. When to see a doctorMost headaches aren't serious, but seekprompt medical care if your child's headaches:Wake your child from sleepWorsen or become more frequentChange your child's personalityFollow an injury, such as a blow to the headtoFeature persistent vomiting or visualchangesAre accompanied by fever and neck painor stiffnessCAUSES
A number of factors can cause yourchild to develop headache. Factors include:Illness and infection Common illnessessuch as colds, flu, and ear and sinus infections are some of the most frequent causesof headache in children.
Moreserious infections, such as meningitis or encephalitis, also can cause headache, but are usually accompanied by other signs and symptoms, such as fever andneck stiffness.Head trauma Bumps and bruises cancause headaches.
Although most head injuries are minor, seek prompt medical attention if your child
If your child gets headaches regularly establish the cause.

falls hard on his or herhead or gets hit hard inthe head.
Also, contact a doctor if your child's headpain steadily worsensafter a head injury.Emotional factors Stress and anxiety —perhaps triggered byproblems with peers, teachers or parents —can play a role in children's headaches.
Children with depression may complainof headaches, particularly if they have troublerecognizing feelings ofsadness and loneliness.Genetic predisposition Headaches, particularly migraines, tend to runin families.Certain foods and beverages Nitrates, a foodpreservative found incured meats, such asbacon, bologna and hotdogs, can trigger headaches, as can the foodadditive MSG.Also, too much caffeine— contained in soda, chocolates, coffee andtea — can cause headaches.
Problems in thebrain Rarely, a braintumor or abscess orbleeding in the braincan press on areas ofthe brain, causing achronic, worseninghead ache.
Typically in thesecases, however, thereare other symptoms, such as visual problems, dizziness and lackof coordination.
This can usually bedetermined by yourhealth care practitioner.

Is your child being “bullied”?>> Help is at hand! budo martial art introduces “bully” classes
BULLYING is a common occurrence inmost schools.
Approximately 40% to 80% ofschoolage children experience bullying atsome point during their school careers.
Regardless of the grade level, socioeconomic environment, gender, religion, orsexual orientation, bullying can happen toanyone.
However, various studies point out thatstudents from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are more bullied than studentsfrom higher socioeconomic backgrounds.
The following is a list of statisticsthat illustrate the severity of bully-
ing within classrooms:
>>2040% of bullying victims actually report being bullied>>70% of primary school and high schoolstudents experience bullying in school>>712% of bullies are habitual and posea serious threat>>23% of 9th graders have carried aweapon to school recently>>515% of students are constantly bullied>>27% of students are bullied because oftheir refusal to engage in common sexualpractices>>25% of students encourage bullying if
not given proper education and support inantibullying techniques
Due to the low numbers of studentswho actually report incidents of bullying, teachers need to have a certain level ofawareness that will hinder any potentialproblems.
This awareness starts with understanding bullying.
Thepsychologyofbothbullyandvictimare imperative to understand.
Levels of confidence of both partiescome into play.
The student who bullies others, also, clearly, has challenges of selfworth, selflove and selfunderstanding.
The victim, as well, requires to becomebold, forthright, develop more selfrespectand become fearLESS. Bullying is NOTsomething that ANY child “deserves”. It isno child’s right to hurt or disrespect another.
Many children are embarrassed to getparents involved realising that they will bebullied further and be called names andhurt even more, because they are unableto “handle” the issue themselves.
Sometimes parents are aware of somesort of foul play but even they are unawareof what the optimal solution could be.
BUDO MARTIAL ART BULLY CLASS will
equip your child with both knowledge aswell as emotional, mental, physical balance in order to be able to combat thischallenge experienced on a daily basis inour South African schools.
Martial Art not only equips your childto be physically fit and healthy but will alsogive him or her the wisdom to handle thesesituations in a wellbalanced and logicalmanner, avoiding any form of unnecessaryviolence.
For further information contact TimurKurmanov (Master and World Champion inTaekwondo and Hapkido, Master of Taichiand Selfdefence, and President: BudoMartial Art).
Most children experience bullying at some point in their academic careers.:
