MORE than 200 straws of “sug-ars” and an undisclosedamount of cash were recov-

ered when KwaDukuza cluster policearrested four alleged drug dealers onThursday.

Nelson Mthembu, SiyabongaMthethwa, FreedomSithole and Sem-bi Ntuli are believed to be part of analleged drug syndicate operating inthe greater KwaDukuza area.

They were arrested during a “drugdeal” with undercover cluster officerson Thursday last week opposite theStanger Secondary School.

Operation“TakeDown” was led byKwaDukuza cluster commander,Brigadier Derek Captain-Hastibeer,in partnership with the National In-tervention Unit (NIU) and Local Crim-inal Records Centre (LCRC).

Captain-Hastibeer said they hadset up observations inpreparation forthe bust.

“The undercover agents were buy-ing drugs from the suspects for some

time,andhadcompiledvideoevidenceleading to the arrests.

“ The bakkie they were travellingin is also being held as evidence.

“Our team waited for the suspectsto attempt the exchange before mak-ing the arrests.

“Wewere able to compile sufficientevidence before embarking on thetake down.”

The suspects are said to be wellknown in KwaDukuza.

“Any person who believes he canget awaywith dealing in drugs is fool-ish to have the notion that he will notbe arrested,” said Captain-Hastibeer.

He said there are 10 stations thatfall under his command and that allwill be performing sting operations

throughout the cluster to ensure thatcriminals do not escape the “might ofthe law”.

“I want to assure the public thatmore operations will be done to clearup the drug problem in the area.”

The four men appeared in theKwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court onThursday last week and were re-manded in custody.

They will appear again on Thurs-day this week for bail application.

Anyone with credible informationcan contact Captain-Hastibeer on032 551 8223.All information will be dealt with inthe strictest of confidence and callersmay remain anonymous.

Alleged drug dealers are searched during operation Take Down; the men were arrested and have been charged.

UDF commemorated>> United Democratic Front’s strength was community

MERVYN KRISHNA

THE United Democratic Frontcelebrated its 30th anniversa-ry in KwaDukuza on Friday.

Among the speakers were ANCprovincial secretary Sihle Zikhalalaand Paul David, who was a formerUDF leader in KwaDukuza.

In his keynote address, Zikhalalasaid: “All those who participated inthe formation of the UDF had ashared vision; that of defeating theapartheidsystemandcreatingastatebuilt on values and principles of de-mocracy based on thewill of the peo-ple.”

David then shared his memorieswith the crowd.

“There aremany people who, likeme, were activists in the UDF in the1980s, but stepped aside when theANC was unbanned,” he said.

“Many of us have now raised chil-dren andmade ourmark in differentspheresofsociety.Manyarealsolook-ing forways tomakeacontribution tosociety, but not in a party politicalmanner. Iwasayoungpolitical activ-ist and a law student when the UDF

was launchedand I remembersittingon the rafters above the stage of theRocklandsCivicCentrebecausetherewasnootherplacewhereIcouldcom-fortably follow proceedings as up to15 000 people packed the hall.”

He said speakers at the launch in-cludedstrugglestalwartssuchasHel-enJoseph,FrancisBaard,ArchieGu-

mede, Oscar Mpetha, Samson Ndouand George Sewpershad, along withyounger activists likeAubreyMokoe-na and reverend Frank Chikane.

“The biggest cheer was reservedfor reverend Allan Boesak who hadmooted the idea of a united frontagainst apartheid when he spoke atthe Transvaal Anti-SAIC (South Afri-

canIndianCouncil)committeeinJan-uary 1983.

“Boesak’s proposal led to a com-mittee being formed to investigatethe feasibility of suchastructureand,in July 1983, the UDF was launchedwithin three weeks.

“The ANC and other political or-ganisations were banned at the time

and theUDFsignalledanewupsurgein internal protest against apartheid.

“While the organisers of the UDFinsisted that it was not a front for theANC or any other organisation, it be-came clear very early on that the or-ganisation would be a key ally to theorganisations thatwere forced to op-erate from exile.”

Hesaid throughitscontinualmassprotests, itplayedakeyrole in forcingthe nationalist government to the ne-gotiating table with the ANC.

“The UDF’s strength was its com-munity structures, because it wasformed out of community, youth, women, workers, religious, sportandother organisations.

“It provided a solid trainingground formanyactivistswho endedup occupying senior positionswithingovernment after South Africa’s firstdemocratic elections.

“Ofcourse, assoonastheANCwasunbannedand its leaders returned toSouth Africa, it disbanded the UDF.

“I think about themany comradeswho sacrificed their lives so that wecan be free today and I tried to thinkofways inwhich I canhelp to achievethe South Africa they were preparedto lay down their lives.”

Nyabawashandedhis suspensionletter by the association chairper-son, Nkosanathi Mhlongo, on Thurs-day last week.

The Weekly has in its possessionevidence of the forged bank docu-ments relating to the transferofmon-ey allocated by a major retailer tothe association.

Three separate payments of R11000,R5500 and R16500 were madeby Nyaba into his personal bank ac-

Some of the charges against Nya-ba include failure to declare fundshe received from the retailer, whichwent directly into his personal bankaccount instead of the SAFA KLFAaccount, forgeryandalterationofSA-FA KLFA banking details to his per-sonalaccount, detailswhichdiverteddeposits of money and failure to fol-

RECEIVINGacall fromherschoolat about 8:30am while she wasstill in bedwas ‘shocking’ and a

‘nightmare’ for aKwaDukuzagirlwhois rewritinghermatric examswith thehope of pursuing a career in nursingnext year.

The young girl, speaking on condi-tionof anonymity, was called inbyherformer school at the eleventh hour towrite the national life orientation (LO)paper on Wednesday last week.

“I was told it would be a generalknowledge exam , but looking at thepaper I felt I needed time to study.

“Even if I was told the night beforeabout the exam I am sure it wouldhave been a little better.”

When she asked her principal foran explanation, he said hewas told bythe department at about 6:30am that

the pupils who were rewriting wouldhave to take the exam on the day.“I had to rush to the school and it tookme 20 minutes to get there. This wasvery unfair. What if my marks are af-fected by the paper I wrote?”

At Glenhills Secondary Schoolthere were two pupils who had to re-write the paper. One of themcould notbe contacted and therefore did notwrite.However,aschoolprincipal,whocom-mented on condition of anonymity, saidthematterwasbeyondhiscontrol. He discovered that there were namesof private pupils on the mark sheetwhen he went to collect the exam pa-pers from the circuit officeonWednes-day.“I had to ensure that the pupils on thelist were present so that they couldsafeguard their marks. There was alack of communication regarding the

management of the LO paper at theschoolandtheprivatecandidates.Thiswasbecauseof the instabilities causedby the Sadtu strike.”

He said the examination the pupilswrotewouldnotdrasticallyaffect theirmarks because of the continuous as-sessment marks which the depart-ment already obtained from the previ-ous year.

Meanwhile, at Groutville Second-arySchool, 41pupils didnot write thenational LO paper as they were notaware that they were writing on theday.

KZN Department of Educationspokesman, Muzi Mahlambi said thepupils were not supposed to write thepaper if they wrote final exams lastyear. “The continuous assessmentmarks stay for three years. The com-mon tests are meant for the currentgrade 12 [pupils].”

Unhappy pupils>> Bad planning by department leads to rushed exams

MERVYN KRISHNA

PUPILS have resumed writing theirtrial exams and the annual nationalassessments (ANA)will goahead, butthe go-slow by South African Demo-cratic Teacher’s Union (Sadtu) mem-bers will continue. This is according to SadtuKwaDuku-za branch secretary Nkanyiso Gu-mede.

This was decided at a mass meet-ing on Monday afternoon at the

Sabha Hall in KwaDukuza.“We want to clarify the misinforma-tionthatthereisasettlementbetweenthe education department and theunion regarding the mass action be-ing called off. That is not true.

“We need to remember all KZNbranches were holding mass meet-ings on Monday and taking man-dates.Bearinginmindthefactthat98per cent of the demands have beenmet, the local branch is hopeful ev-erything should beback to normal byTuesday afternoon (yesterday).”

Sadtu members implemented“work to rule” action onMonday lastweek after the department failed tomeet its demands. This left matric pupils throughoutKwaDukuza in a state of panic aftertheir examinations were stopped. However, examinations resumed onMonday with pupils writing theirphysical science papers which wereinitially scheduled for last week.

Sadtu is demanding that educa-tion department head Nkosinathi Si-shi be suspended and that a perfor-

mance evaluation be done on hiswork.

THE primary and high schoolyears can be stressful for children- particularly those battling aca-demically.These children often feel thatthere is something wrong withthem and that they can’t behelped. However, recent re-search re-sults haveindicated asignificantcorrelationbetweenlevels of ac-ademicachieve-ment inchildrenand thelearningblockagesthat theyex-perience.

Re-search onthe subjectwas initiat-ed by Henk du Plessis, managingdirector of Edublox, a South Afri-cancompany that assists childrenandadultswithreadingandlearn-ing. Whilst visiting a number ofschools, du Plessis realised thatmany learners were finding it dif-ficult to successfully make thetransition from primary school tohighschool level. Thiswas largelydue to the fact that parents oftenhelp their children with school

work and studying in primaryschool but once they reach highschool level the children are ex-pected to take responsibility fortheir own school work and stud-ies. “Fortunately for learners fac-ing these learning blockages, thisis something that can be success-

fully ad-dressedthrough in-terven-tion,” saysdu Plessis.

“Manylearnersmistakenlythink thatstudyingmeans re-vising ma-terial byreadingthrough itrepeatedly, but this isnot thecase. Studysuccessand failure

do not only depend on ability. Anessential component is the extenttowhichlearnersareable toapplyproper study methods and learn-ing skills,” he explains.

EdubloxReadingandLearningClinics offer Studiblox, a coursethat includes brain training exer-cises, study methods, learningskills, writing essays and deliver-ing speeches for learners fromgrades four to 12.

Since the final examsare around the corner,be proactive and book aseat for your child inEdubloxs’ next studymethod course whichwill take place on 25, 26and 27 September. Tobook a seat call 032586 3411.

Stanger Weekly

Page 11: Stanger weekly 13 09 2013

I'VE recently been bombardedwith questions of the value ofelectronic media and whether ornot it is ushering our society intoa new age, or dumbing down hu-manity as we know it.

It makes for an interesting ar-gument. On one hand, you havefascinating advances in the waywe communicate with othersaround the world.

We are no longer restricted tojust the communities we live in.

Our society has in just a fewdecades advanced its sphere ofcommunication on a global level.

Just the other day an Israeliwoman, who works as a commu-nications expert, made contactwith me on Facebook and hasthus far shared many great in-sights about her country – as haveI (I'm saving the corruption discus-sions for later).

Would this have been possibleor as accessible 10 to 15 years ago?

I don't think so. Yes we did haveemail, the internet and tele-phones, but did we really have thesocial awareness of other coun-tries as we do now? Not really.

However, this coin is painfullytwo-faced with other social illsstemming from electronic masscommunication. When the inter-net first came about, many mod-ern day philosophers and techno-logical experts assumed thiswould free humanity from itsmany restrictive physical bonds.

In many ways, it has. But, as we all know, the net’s

greatest endeavour thus far hasbeen the ‘porn’ industry. There hasalso been a decreased advent of

attention to vital issues aroundthe world such as the AmericanRussian stand-off in Syrian wa-ters. Instead, we find more atten-tion directed toward Kim Kar-dashian's fashion sense, or LadyGaga's new album release. Allgreat distractions of our time.

We need to ask ourselves ashumans...are we participatingpositively for the future of ourrace? How will our great greatgrandchildren label our contribu-tion to the betterment of all?

We have great resources at ourdisposal, yet we choose to squan-der our potential with menial dis-tractions of attention seeking par-asites. The solution is simple.

Take all your electronic devices– your cellphone, iPads and com-puters and allow them to showyou the real world mainstreammediaishidingfromyou.Tuneintonews websites and alerts anddominate conversations in ameaningful manner. Don't allowyourself to be dictated to by politi-cians and corporations. Arm your-self with knowledge that is outthere and use it to uplift your soci-ety and world. Send through yourcomments, opinions and topicideas to [email protected]

Electronicmedia - goodor bad?

KAVEEL SINGHJust sayin'

HENRY Adams aptly wrote: "Teachers affecteternity - they can never tell where or whentheir influence will end.'' With this in mind, I

read with great interest about the recent SADTUstrike but with even greater dismay about their dis-ruption of the matric trial exams.

Whilst teachers have the inalienable right to strikeand whilst I agree with some of their legitimate griev-ances, itappearsthatthetimingofthestrikehasbeenpreconceived and designed to coincide with the writ-ing of the trial exams. If this is true, it is a shamefuland despicable action that deserves the strongestcondemnation. There is a very fine line between earn-ing support and achieving contempt for one's cause.Sympathy can very quickly turn into disgust! This isespecially true when one resorts to unlawful and un-constitutional acts such as preventing principals fromcollecting matric trial papers from the Education de-partment's offices. Worse still is the anomaly that

those that are entrusted with the advancement ofeducation of our children actually become obstaclesand hinderances toward that noble objective. This isakin to the ordinary mob mentality whom in theirquest for delivery of basic services resort to the burn-ing and destroying of State infrastructure.

Further, it is interesting to note that the ''work-to-rule'' (a non-sensical term in itself) strike action ad-vocates a 7 hour work day. Is this not the norm alreadywith all the other SADTU-led actions such as ''go-slows'' and mass marches on school days? Is it notpossible to conduct strikes and mass action on Fridayafternoons or Saturdays?

I have high regard for most teachers who are com-mitted to their profession and who daily play a pivotalrole in moulding and shaping young minds. It is theirpositive influence that Henry Adams was referring to,not the destructive, mindless actions of a few!

SADTU - Go slow, poor show!

AS teenagers we make quite a lotof mistakes which we try to coverup. Speaking from experience, Iguess there are many times whenI like to be carefree and forget tobe responsible.

Today's column was inspiredby one of my column readers whoemailed me and said that as teen-agers we are young and do sillythings because we are carefree.

This is the thought which mostteenagers have, but we don't rea-lise that our parents can't alwaysbe there to take care of us.

Some people are carefree

while others are just irresponsible, you're probably wondering what'sthe difference right?

Being carefree is when youknow your responsibilities and youfulfil them, but you choose to becalm about it, taking it in yourstride and moving forward. Beingirresponsible, on the other hand, iswhen you choose to forget your re-sponsibilities completely.

Maybe it's a fight you got into,or a bad relationship which peoplewere talking about, it could evenbe having a house party whichyour parents didn't know about.

What may seem small to us is,infact, quiteabigmattertoadults, mostly our parents!

There are more serious mis-takes which some teenagersmake, whether to them it's just acase of being silly, having fun or aninnocent mistake, it happens.

An incident which I heard of re-cently comes to mind when talk-

ing about mistakes and being irre-sponsible.

This incident has created thetitle for this week’s column. We allknow that in an exam we have towrite with a pen, likewise in life ev-erything we do is permanent andcannot be undone.

But some teenagers think theyhave pencils and erasers in theirhands, which makes them believethat whatever mistakes theymake, they or their parents cansuddenly erase.

Nothing is wrong with havingfun and being carefree. I just be-lieve that as a teenager we shouldbe equally responsible simply be-cause somebody else should nothave to clean up our messes.

Do you have a story on a mis-take you made which you later re-gretted?

Email me, [email protected] to tell me yourstory!

and return to this story. On Friday 6 Sep-tember I attended the UDF anniversarytalk and was privileged to hear UDF stal-wart and ex-NIC executive member PaulDavid speak. It was a most enlightening talk that morepeople should have listened to.

Whatfollowedhowever,wasarealeye-opener for me.

The address by the provincial secretaryof the ANC, Sihle Zikalala was both frankand forthright.Apart from touching on corruption, nepo-tism and gatekeeping, the thrust of the

secretary’s speech was inclusivity and theANC imperative to ensure that its commu-nities and membership be constantly in-formed, consulted and engaged in its pro-cesses. It now seems to me that we havemany ANCs.

Back to the question of the StangerManor “task team”.

There was no notice of intention toform such a task team and no consultationwith the general membership of the ANCin Stanger Manor.

Sduduzo’s appearance in the photo-graph makes one question the railroading

of this task team.Baboo, it is well known, has no ground

roots support in this area and like the otherIndian councillor resorts to importing peo-ple from outside the core of Stanger Manorto get his quorum.

I am aware the ANC is now in electionmode and is trying to win back the confi-dence of the Indian

community it has neglected in recentyears.

How can we take its efforts seriously ifit continues to allow discredited peoplewhose only purpose in getting onto council

is to enrich themselves? If we have to heed the call by Zikalala

then that task team must be disbandedimmediately and a proper process put inplace.

“SOMETHING to believe in...” is amotivational talk by a homegrown KwaDukuza author, SashiJaisingh. The talk is very profes-sionally designed for the under-standing of teenagers and aims toprevent them from beginning ad-dictive behaviour.

The many informative slides, make it easier for young minds to

grasp some (otherwise) compli-cated subjects.

The audience can expect to bepractically informed of how andwhy destructive behaviour begin, why people get trapped into ad-dictive cycles and the scary resultsof where those lifestyles can lead, which intends to make the listenerthink twice about experimenting

with addictive substances. For people who have already

begun addictive lifestyles, a newprocess is also unveiled and ex-plained, which can help makebeating addiction a lot easier.

It is well worth your child expe-riencing the talk, as this work is agood initiative in the war againstaddiction.

Motivational talk to overcome drugaddiction

IT seems to me Mr Frank DuToit is living in a cocoon ofhis own or he has been bad-ly misinformed by a senilepensioner.

To say repairs has notbeen done at the RA Mood-ley Old Age Home since2006 is absolutely ridiculoussince the ANC took overward 19 in 2006.

I have been in charge of re-porting repairs. I wanted tosay if repairs are not beingdone then I must be failingin my duties. For the pastthree months municipalworkers have been here al-most every day doing allsorts of repairs like varnish-ing doors replacing putty onwindows, patching floor

tiles, fixing toilets and taps, replacing geysers etc. Theyrepaired a ceiling two weeksago. It’s a pity Mr Du Toitdidn’t come on a tour beforecontacting the Weekly. Iwould have been proud totake him on a tour. Wake upMr Du Toit and smell theroses.
