urday for theannualUmkosiweLem-be Heritage Day (formerly ShakaDay) celebrations.

The event was attended by mon-archoftheZulunation, KingGoodwillZwelithini ka Bhekuzulu, Inkosi ofthe Buthelezi clan and traditionalprime minister to the Zulu monarchand nation prince MangosuthuButhelezi, KZNacting premier SenzoMchunu, iLembedeputymayorDollyShandu, KwaDukuzamayor RicardoMthembu, Amakhosi of the Zulu Na-tion andahost of provincial and localdignitaries.

Addressing the gathering of morethan 1 000 Zulus, Buthelezi reiterat-ed the reason for the annual celebra-tion.

“This day is set aside to commem-orate the life and the legacy of thefounderof theZuluNation,KingSha-ka ka Senzangakhona. Almost 200years ago, the 29-year-old warriorascended the throne.“The fact that hewas awarrior influ-enced his style of leadership and hada profound effect on the kind of soci-

ety his leadership shaped.. King Sha-ka shaped a warrior society. That isnot to say he created a warring peo-ple, but that he imbued our nationwith a sense of courage, resilience,determination and discipline.”

He questionedwhether the legacyofKingShakawillbe intact 200 yearsfrom now and if the nation is “doingall we can and all we must to pre-serve that legacy.”

“Thisis about sustaining the unityofournation,whichistherichestpartof our heritage. King Shaka broughttogether a fractured society and cre-ated unity. The greatest threat to ourunity today is that fractures and divi-sions may creep in again.”

He said he dedicated his life toserving his nation and to preservingthe legacybestowedbyhisancestors.

“I still labour, and will continue tolabour, to see our values upheld forthesakeofunity.Thisunityistheheri-tage of our past and the hope for ourfuture.”

Zwelithini launched an attack onthe behaviour of some of the attend-ees of events such as the recent ReedDance.

He said these gatherings were tooimportant to be looked down upon.

“If you are privileged enough toattend, don't behave like a drunkardin a bar.“These events have a deeper mean-ingforusZulus, theyarenot justcere-monies,” he said.

He said it was disturbing thatsomepeople use the events “as awayto introduce alcohol to our children.”

“I will not let this happen to mychildren. When you bring your chil-dren to me they becomemy childrenas well. No good has ever come froma child drinking alcohol. What I'msaying is important to anyone with aZulu spirit in them.”

Speaking out about the accidentbetween Nkwalini and Melmoth onthe Sunday of the Reed Dance wherenine maidens were killed, the Kingurged event organisers to take carewhen planning events, especiallywith the transportation of people.

“These buses must be inspectedthoroughly. The transport for mywarriors, my maidens and theirguardians should be inspected. Eventhe drivers must be tested,” he said.

He also spoke out against callingthe KwaDukuza RecreationalGroundsa“ground”insteadofaroyalhousehold.

"This is not a ground. It's part ofKwaDukuza's royal household. Eventhough there is a municipality called

KwaDukuza,whenwecomehere,wecometotheiLembe'sroyalhouseholdand we must behave as such.“We will not let any wrong-doinghappen in KwaDukuza, like wewould not let [anywrong-doing hap-pen in] Khetha, kwaKhangela, Lind'uZulu, Nyokeni and Ondini.

Speaking about the upcoming na-tionalelectionsnextyear,he saidpeo-ple must vote for the party they

know.“Voteforthosewhoyouknowwillacton your behalf.“Listen to what they say about tradi-tion and culture and vote for thosethat uphold what you believe in anddeem important,” he said.

The event closed with the tradi-tional dance by the king, princeButhelezi, Mchunu and other digni-taries.

Drug offence arrests riseCrime statistics show significant drop in theft out motor vehicles locally, but increase in drug crimes

AN increase in drug-related of-fence arrests is a positive one,said KZN SAPS spokesman

Colonel Jay Naicker on Monday.This comes after the release of the

SAPS national crime statistics lastweek. Naicker said there was an in-crease indrug related offence arrestsin all stations in the province.

“ In terms of our medium termexpenditure frameworkplan, KZNisperforming extremely well in termsof crime reduction over the past fiveyears.

“Certain crime categories haveshown slight increases when com-pared to the previous year, and weareaddressing those crimesandspe-cifically those stations that contrib-utedtothoseincreases,”saidNaicker.

The Weekly reviewed crime sta-tistics from the Mandeni, Newark,KwaDukuza, Sundumbili and Um-hlali SAPS between April 2012 andMarch 2013.

Regarding thedrugrelatedoffenc-es; KwaDukuza was the only stationout of the five that saw a decreasefrom 957 to 953 arrests.

Mandeni saw an increase from163 to 211 andNewark from three toeight. Sundumbili increased from220 to 250 arrests while Umhlali in-creasedfrom276to426andGlendalefrom 52 to 111.

At the KwaDukuza SAPS, murdercases dropped from 57 to 47while itremained the same in Umhlali SAPSand Mandeni SAPS.

In Mandeni, only four cases werereported and 25 in Sundumbili.In Newark, murder cases increased

from three to eight.Speaking to the Weekly on Mon-

day, Mandeni media liaison officerWarrant Officer Bongani Hlabisasaid the countless stop-and-searchoperations by the police led to the in-crease in the arrests.

In KwaDukuza, robbery with ag-gravating circumstances increasedfrom459 to 487 arrestswhile theft ofmotorvehiclesdecreasedfrom134to85.

Cases of burglary at residentialpremises saw a great increase from732 to 969.

Sundumbili saw an increase inresidential burglary cases from 374to 512, Newark from 18 to 30 whileMandeni experienced a decreasefrom 37 to 30.

After seeing an increase in bur-glary from 115 to 119, Hlabisawarned Mandeni residents not toleave their homes unattended.

He also urged the public to ensurethat their cars are locked when theypark them.

“The police analyse crime so thatnecessary people can be deployed atareas which have a high rate ofcrime,” he explained.

KwaDukuza SAPS media liaisonofficer, constable Sibusiso Khumalosaid while the station has seenmanypositivestatistics,officerswillcontin-ue to work hard.

“The increase in statistics is not abad thing. It simplymeansweareap-prehending more criminals andmore crimes are being reported ordiscovered.

“Sexual assault cases are difficultto police because most happen in-doors and are seen more as a social

THEKwaDukuza clustertask team has arrested awoman for possession ofmandrax.

According to infor-mation from the police,the suspect was chargedfor the possession ofmandrax after she wasarrested during an intel-ligence-driven drug op-eration headed byKwaDukuza clustercommander BrigadierDerek Captain-Hasti-beer, together with theNational InterventionUnit and the LCRC at ahome in Newtown.

She appeared in theKwaDukuza Magis-trate’s Court on Mondayandwasreleasedonbail.

Other evidence in-cluding an undisclosedamount of cash wasfound and will be sub-ject to an ongoing inves-tigation.

According to Briga-dier Captain-Hastibeer,the suspect is believed tohave a link to a currentlyongoing investigation.

THE skeletal remains of a missingiLembe District Municipality officialwere found in Ndwedwe two months

after she was reported missing.Police and the search-rescue unit found

the body of Doris Bongumusa Buthelezi (43)at thebottomofacliff in thebushes last week.

Buthelezi wasemployedbythenationalde-partment of environmental affairs and wasdeployed to the iLembe District Municipalityto deal with environmental issues.

According to KZN police spokesman, Cap-tain Thulani Zwane, it is believed that thewomanwas pushed off the cliff after an argu-ment with a man who was known to her.

Theman, believed to be fromMorningsidein Durban, handed himself over to police onFriday last week.

Zwane said themanwould face charges ofmurder when he appeared in the NdwedweMagistrate’s Court.

“The victim was identified by the clothingshewaswearing. The police forensic unit willcarry out more tests to establish the cause ofdeath.”

According to reports, a relative opened amissingpersoncaseat theMayvillepolice sta-tion in July when Buthelezi did not returnhome for a week. Buthelezi apparently toldfamily that shewas visiting aman in Tongaat.

“The family made several calls to the manand Buthelezi but their phones went unan-swered,” said Zwane.

Hesaidabreakthroughwasmadebypolicewhen they traced Buthelezi’s VW Polo to apanel beating shop in Tongaat.

“Theywere told amanhadbrought the carin for repairs a month ago.”

The suspect contacted police on Friday af-ter they had left several messages at hishome.

“He initially denied knowing anythingaboutButhelezi,but then took thepolice to thecliff after being questioned extensively.”

Commenting on behalf of themunicipality,communication manager, Zee Nqala said theiLembe District Municipality “wishes to con-vey sincere and heartfelt condolences at thismost difficult time to the family and friends ofour fallen colleague.”

Minister takes action>> Education MEC and acting premier comes down hard on pupils

ACTING KwaZulu-Natal pre-mier and education MEC Sen-zo Mchunu read the riot act to

pupils and department officials afterhe found “total lawlessness” at Qo-qulwazi High School in Driefontein.

He was visiting the school withKwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthem-bu and education department offi-cials last Wednesday.

Mchunu found classrooms emptyas most pupils were more than twohours late for school, while otheryounger children of school-going agewere found playing in a local park.

“Why are you not at school?Where is your school uniform?”

asked Mchunu, when he found thepupils playing in the local park.

After failing to get a proper re-sponse, Mchunu personally droppedthe children off at their respectiveschools.

One pupil was found in posses-sion of dagga, whichwas discoveredin his pencil case, and a knife in hispocket.

The pupil was arrested for pos-session of the dagga

“We cannot allow drugs in ourschools. This is a place of learningwhere children are supposed to be inasafeenvironment , freeofcrimeanddrugs,” said Mchunu.

When Mchunu arrived at theschool,hewasinformedthattheprin-cipal was on sick leave since August

2012, but her immediate supervisorwas not aware of the leave, whichwas not authorised.

KWAZULU-NATAl acting pre-mier, Senzo Mchunu, said hewas satisfied with the service

delivery under Mandeni Municipality,which falls under iLembe District.

Mchunu, together with his cabinet,visitedtheareaaspartof theKwaZulu-Natal provincial government Opera-tion Sukuma Sakhe - aimed at speed-ing up service delivery, interactingwith beneficiary communities andmonitoring other ongoing govern-ment funded projects.

The office of the premier also re-cently introduced a hotline to reportservice delivery complaints; the num-ber is 0800 596 596.

Mchunu said inMandeni LocalMu-nicipality, out of 30 902 households,123608people have access to six clin-ics within a radius of 5km, a standardadopted by the Department of Healthin its efforts to make health servicesmore accessible to the people.

“In KwaDukuza Municipality, 13124 households, 52 496 persons areserviced by seven clinics within 5km.Another six clinics are in the processof being constructed.

“InMaphumuloMunicipality, eightclinics are currently servicing 57 684peoplewithinthe5kmradius,withoneclinic in the pipeline,” Mchunu said.

He said that in the past four yearstheprovincial government’s emphasishas been onmore effective service de-livery processes and the introductionof a more integrated approach in theprovision of government services topeople through Operation SukumaSakhe.

When speaking about HIV/Aidschallenges, he said the ProvincialAids Council was currently dealingwith theprocessofequitabledistribu-tionof resources toaddress“aholistictreatment programme and care inthe community.”

Speaking about job creation in thedistrict, Mchunu said the Departmentof Community Safety and Liaisonalone employed 2 100 people in thevoluntary social crime preventionproject.

Other job opportunities were cre-ated in the areas of food security (800jobs),mechanisationprogramme(600jobs), comprehensive agriculturalsupport programme (4 500 jobs), live-stock (3460 jobs), and other infra-structure projects employed 3 820people.

Inthegreeneconomy,morethan12000 jobs have been created.

Yellow maize production netted400 jobs, and groundnuts productionadded another 825 jobs.

He also outlined amassive agricul-

tural farms project, which seeks toidentify six subsistence farms andconvert them to commercially viablefarms.

Viable sites have been identifiedacross the four local municipalitiesfalling under iLembe District: Ma-thonsi,Bulwer,Siyanqoba,Kwahlong-wa, Mwandle, and Khelelani.

According to Mchunu, the objec-tives of the project are to improve theinfrastructure on the farms by provid-ing agricultural equipment and ser-vices, and to identify agricultural co-ops and assist them with capacitybuilding and skills development.

The end goal of the project, he said,is to have farms that are able to pro-duce crops for the local andwider dis-trict fresh produce market.

Mchunu also outlined govern-ment’s flagship project, dubbed iLem-be Vineyards.

“The objective of the project is toplant andharvest vineswith the inten-tion of producing someor all of the fol-lowing: wine, brandy, juice and tablegrapes.”

He explained that the iLembeVine-yards project is an agro-processingbusinesswith anagri-tourismcompo-nent.

The ultimate goal of the project, hesaid, is to create economically viableprojects and industries.

A 14-year-old schoolboy who was bru-tally attacked by a group of armed rob-bers is in dire need of assistance.

Kashveer Singh, aTongaat SecondarySchool pupil, was assaulted and robbedby a group of armed men while on hisway home from school in June this year.

Of course that's a tricky situation becausefamily is family. However, if you're older andyou have a 'private' life, it does get invadedwhenyourparents readabout it onFacebook.Imagine yourself lying and going for a houseparty and few days later the pictures end upon Facebook and the first person to commentis your mother?

There is only one thing she is going to sayand that will definitely be 'grounded for life'.

AlthoughhavingyourparentsonFacebookmight stop you from uploading somethingwhich will land you in trouble or maybe evenstopyoufromdoingcertainthings,I'venoticedsome teenagers are not really bothered by it.

I'd find it awkward to have my parents onFacebookand thenbe “ina relationship”withsomeoneonFacebook,especiallywhenyou'rejust 16, but maybe that's just me.

I think the final andmost gruesome part ofembarrassmentwhichmight hitmewould beif one of my parents had my friends on Face-book and then uploaded a baby picture of meor say something about mewhich is personaland embarrassing, I'dfindarockandhideun-der it!

THERE are few public entitiesor organisations that possessgreater influence than themedia.Be it your local community news-paper, radio or television broad-casts, we ultimately draw manyconclusions based on what massmedia communicates to us.

Take for example, the FieldsHill accident where 23 peoplewere killed after an articulatedtruck slammed into vehicles.

Over the past week there hasbeen endless speculation by largemedia houses as to what may ormaynothaveoccurredduringthisincident. Letme repeat...specula-tion.

Let’s stop for a moment andanalyse the facts. Yes, it is a greattragedy with the loss of lives andgreat impacton the affected fami-lies. But what do we have aboutthe accident? Who should we bedirecting our emotional concernsto?

A video showing the horrificcrash was doing its roundsshort-lyaftertheincident.Hastheinves-tigation into theallegedbrake fail-ure been concluded? No. Has

there been any solid commentfrom the truck owners? No. Hasthe truck driver been given an op-portunity to give his version ofevents concisely? No.

Sympathyhaspouredinfortheyoung immigrant truck driver.

And perhaps this is justified.But remember, the brake failurehas thus far been his testimony ofevents. Not the determination ofa proper investigation. The vilifi-cationof the young manhasbeena drive by large media houses.They have also largely inferredthat the trucking company issomewhat to blame.

Andwell,perhapstheyare.Butthat is not for us to determine.Neither is his innocence or guilt.

Factual information on this is-sue is currently minimal at themost. If this was not such awell publicised case, reporterswouldnotevencontinuallyupdateyou on court appearances.

My point is simple. It is vital tobe wary of certain “hyped” up is-sues. Of course, most mediahouses ensure all factual infor-mation is presented in an objec-tive manner.

Most importantly, however,media has long been regarded asthe “watchdog” for society. Butdon't buy into what everyone ve-hemently preaches to you.Alwaysanalyse thedeeper impactof issues and the context aroundthat.

I TOOKacontract via a local telephonecompany KwaDukuza and found thatwhatwasadvertisedwasnotwhatIre-ceived. I returned the phone the nextday.

I thenfoundthatIwasbeingrepeat-edly charged for the contract eventhough the phone was returned.

I contactedclient servicesabout theproblem and they advised that theproblem will be rectified and I will becredited.

This persisted and I went to themanager of a local branch who con-firmed that the contract will be can-celled and I will be credited for theamounts that I have already paid.

I now find that I have been chargedan amount of R2547-38 as a forfeiturefeeforthiscontractaswellasamonthlyinstalment from date of signing of thecontract to date.

At theoutsetof signing thiscontractI received no documentation whatso-ever confirming that I had this con-tract, neither did I receive a documentwhen I returned the phone.

There was no clause stating that Iwill be charged this amount.

On my querying this situation withanother branch again shortly thereaf-ter, I found that there is no record onfile that the phone was returned thevery next day or ever returned for that

matter.My landline is continuously being

cut off and I ambeing charged re-con-nectionfeesbecauseofthis,allbecausesomeonedidnotdohisorher jobprop-erly.

The account statement does noteven have a postal address nor emailaddress whom one can contact withqueries of this nature.

IamawareoftheCreditRegulationsand I know my rights.

It seems that this companydoesnotknow theirs.

Unsuspecting customers get rippedoff

I KNOWits stated in the freedomchar-ter, “that the wealth of the country be-longs to all its people and must besharedequallybut it’snothappening”.

What we arewitnessing from theyear 2000 that the wealth belongs topoliticians and people who are wellconnected to the ruling party.

What I have seen and I am stillseeing is the poor and the workingclass are used and are still going to beused as “fodder during elections” asmany people who live in villages arevery poor. Politicians try to misleadthese people that they represent themand alsomake empty promises. Some

parties bluff the peoplewith t-shirts, aonce-off meal and after they are votedin you see them again after five years.

Politicians earn high salaries andhavemanyperks,butnotrealisingthatwe are the employers we are payingthem, (the tax-payersand theratepay-ers). Ihaveseensomededicatedpoliti-cians who have showed and are stillshowing their strength.

Theyarebuilding that partnershipwith the poor.Remember, oppositionparties play a major role in trying tofightforcleangovernancebytherulingparty.Remember,electapoliticalpartythat helps you every day and not one

day only.I thought in20yearsofourdemoc-

racy that councillors have fulfilled thecommitment of indigent support, butits sad to see somepolitical parties usethis support forms only during elec-tions.Dear voter, you must ask thesepoliticians “where were you for thepast five years?”And thatwill give youaguideline to vote for the rightpartyofyour choice.

Speaking at the project handover onTuesday last week at the Nonoti Mouth,KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu told locals to take advantage of the opportunities

that government is creating as part of alleviating poverty.

The municipality will be spending atleast R4.5 million towards the constructionof the 1.5km Nonoti bus route.

“These projects will make a difference inthe lives of the unemployed who will receiveemployment.

“However, this assertion does not meanthat the people must rely in governmentprojects for employment.

“There are many other opportunities inthe waiting out of government, especially inthe business sector,” said Mthembu.

Since the beginning of the month, themunicipality has delivered five other multimillion rand infrastructural developmentprojects.

THE Shadrack family of Steve Bikotownshiphasbeenleftdestituteaftera fire destroyed their home and all

their possessions on Friday night.Fortunately, none of the family mem-

berswereinthehouseatthetimeofthefire.

Bafana Shadrack, his wife Mamini, theirdaughter Nqobile and her two-year-oldsonwere at their neighbour’s housewhenthe fire started at around 11pm.

“We only noticed the fire when theflameslitupthearea.Theentirehousewason fire and the flameswere too fierce to tryand salvage any of our belongings. “When

my wife saw the fire, she fainted,” saidBafana. “All our possession have beenburned. I have to start all over again. I amstill in shockandcan't believe that this hashappened.”

The cause of the fire is still unknown.“Wearecurrentlylivingwithfamily.It'sdif-ficult as I have always been independent

and can't wait to find a place of my own,”he said.

TheKwaDukuzaMunicipality DisasterManagement Unit visited the family andassisted with food parcels and blankets.

KING Shaka Street is the mainstreet in the KwaDukuza.

The street is named so asKing Shaka's grave, a grain pit, anda small adjoining museum with arti-factsandinformationfromthetimeofKing Shaka is situated in the towncentre on this street.

Bronchitis, PneumoniA, Laryngotracheobronchitis (croup). Thepresentation of these conditionswill depend on age, infecting organism and site of infection.PATHOPHYSIOLOGY

There is no hard and fast definition of LRTI that is universallyagreed upon. Essentially, it is inflammation of the airways/pulmonary tissue, due to viral or bacterialinfection, below the level of the larynx. Remember that gastrooesophageal reflux may cause achemical pneumonitis. Smoke andchemical inhalation may also causepulmonary inflammation.

Viral infections: About 45% ofchildren hospitalised with pneumonia have a viral aetiology, commonly; Influenza A,BACTERIAL INFECTION

These constitute about 60% ofhospitalised pneumonia cases:Streptococcus pneumoniae (themajority of bacterial pneumonias),H. influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacteria eg, Escherichia coli.

Secondary bacterial infection isrelatively common following viralupper respiratory tract infection(URTI) or LRTI.PRESENTATION

Mostoften,LRTIisaccompaniedby fever and may be preceded by atypical viral URTI. It is important toassess all children with a fever accu

rately. Bacterial pneumonia shouldbe considered in children whenthere is persistent or repetitive feverabove 38.5°C together with chestrecession and a raised respiratoryrate.

In all age groups be aware thataudible wheezing is not seen veryoften in LRTI (although it is common with more diffuse infectionssuch as in M. pneumoniae and bronchiolitis).HISTORY

Age and the type of LRTI, will affect the symptoms and history.

Newborn and neonates presentwith: grunting, poor feeding, irritability or lethargy, fast breathing, fever or hypothermia, cyanosis (in severe infection), cough (but this isunusual at this age).

Infants present with: cough (themost common symptom after thefirst four weeks), tachypnoea (according to severity), grunting, chestindrawing, feeding difficulties, irritability and poor sleep, noisybreathing,historyofprecedingURTI(very common).

Toddlers/preschool children:

again, preceding URTI is common,cough is the most common symptom, fever occurs most noticeablywith bacterial organisms, pain occurs more often in this age group(chest and abdominal), vomitingwith coughing is common (posttussive vomiting).

Older children: There will be additional symptoms to those above,more expressive and articulate children will report a wider range ofsymptoms, constitutional symptoms may be more vividly described.EXAMINATION

A careful routine of observationis essential to identify respiratorydistress early.

Your healthcare practitionershould look for other diseases (forexample, rashes, pharyngitis) withcareful systematic examination, aswell as classify the severity of therespiratory distress that your childis experiencing.

Differential diagnosis should include: asthma, inhaled foreignbody, pneumonitis from othercauses like gastrooesophageal reflux.

Investigations : Numerous investigations are at your healthcarepractitioners disposal from chestxrays to blood tests and examination of the sputum, these can exclude or confirm the pathologicalagent responsible for your child’s illness.

Lowerrespiratorytractinfectionsin childrenLower respiratory tract infection(LRTI) is infection below the level ofthe larynx and can include:

MANAGEMENTDecision to admit :

Most children with lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) andpneumonia can betreated as outpatients,with oral antibiotics.

Older children canbe managed with closeobservation at home ifthey are not distressedor significantly dyspnoeic and parents cancope with the illness.

Admission is advised for severe LRTI.

This is indicated by:Respiratory rate >50breaths/minute, Significant increase inheart rate for level offever, presence of comorbidity eg, congenital heart disease,chronic lung disease ofprematurity, chronic respiratory conditionssuch as cystic fibrosis,bronchiectasis or immune deficiencyshould also promptconsideration of admission.

Admission shouldalso be considered for:All children under theage of six months, Children in whom treatment with antibioticshas failed (most children improve after 48hours of oral, outpatient antibiotics)

Minimise risk by prevention of pneumococcal pneumonia and influenza by vaccination,for highrisk individualswith preexisting heartor lung disease.

Smoking in thehomeisamajorriskfactor for all childhood respiratory infection.

Metatarsalgia is a global term to describe forefoot pain. It covers pain occurringat the metatarsal heads, the metatarsophalangeal joints (MPJs), or in the soft tis

Secondary metatarsalgia is defined aspain that does not originate within themetatarsal area.

Metatarsalgia is one of the more common footpain complaints seen by MedicalProfessionals. The causes are diverse and

the pain can be debilitating.Keratosis (Callus): Callus is a thickening

of the skin, and in the feet it is often notedunder the forefoot. This may be due to a“dropped” metatarsal, or an abnormal footposition. The repetitive pressure created bythese conditions can result in tissue buildup. Hammertoes are frequently a contributing factor as they can significantly changethe metatarsal angle.

The Role of Biomechanics: There aremany biomechanical reasons why metatarsalgia may occur. Excessive pressure canlead to callus, fat pad wasting, inflammation, and associated pain.

Other possibilities may include trauma,postsurgical side effects, arthritis, Morton'sneuroma and neuromuscular diseases causing muscle imbalance.

Metatarsal Pads: The most common approach to treating metatarsalgia is to offload the affected area.

“All they are doing here is hurtingthemselves and their loved ones be-cause sometimes we may even betempted to steal or commit fraud tokeep up with others.”

Ndumo advised people to knowwhat is important to them and makesure they spend theirmoney toachievethat.

“Improve your skills so that you aremarketable and can get a promotionand a better job or even start your ownbusiness.

“Control your expenses and don'twaste money on unnecessary thingsthat will not make you better of in thelong run. We must stop overdressingand buying latest model cars. Investyour money in the stock exchange bybuying exchange traded funds.

“This is simple for an av-erage person to buy

shares, it isrelative-ly safe and thecosts are lowwhilereturnsaregood.”

turn.Khan startedhis feeding initiative in1988

after completinghis studies in IslamicTheol-ogy and today feeds about 500 people daily.

He started by feeding the ChatsworthHospice patients before hemoved to Stangerin 2001. He spends his days providingmealsto the underprivileged and the sick. He feedsresidents of the local hospice, Glenhills Pri-mary school children and many others.

According to Khan, his hobby is cookingfor the masses which leaves him with littletime for his family. The married father-of-three said: “My family knows that this is mycalling, they understand when I am not athome that I am out making sure that otherbrothers and sisters have something to eat. I

Okay...maybenotrealcows,butmorethan20cyclistsdressedincowsuitsped-alling for all they’re worth.

Their “moo”-vement is known as“TheCows” - a fundraisingarmofCHOC(the Childhood Cancer Foundation SA).

Fun-loving entrepreneur and Dur-banNorth resident,GordonReid,will beone of them.

“I joined The Cows as the emphasisis on theFUN in fundraising.We’re eachencouraged to challenge ourselves to beextraordinary, have fun and also raiseawareness towards cancer,” Reid toldFever.

The ideaofdoingsomethingdifferentall began in 2008when awoman, “Ker-rin Bain lost her daughter to cancer,” heexplained.

“After thegrievingandslowlygettingover theshockof losingherdaughtershebecame determined to help other par-entswhoweregoingtobeinthesamesit-uation.

“She convinced a work colleague -Cordi van Niekerk - to do an event insome kind of suit to raise awareness ofchildhood cancer. Cordi and five matesthen decided to do the 94.7 Cycle race inJohannesburg dressed up in cow suitsthat they had found at a fancy dressstore,” And so “The Cows” were born.

“The cow suit isn’t just for cycling,”Reidsays.“Infact,we’vehadCowsclimbKilimanjaro, do the Iron Man and runmarathons, andnext yearwe’ll bedoingtheMidmarMile in Cow triathlon suits!”

Reidwasintroducedtotheconceptbya friend and, “I fell in love with it! It’squirky, off-the-wall, fun, different, andhas a touch of lunacy attached.”

Thismarried, father of two admits tobeingabitofanadrenalinjunkie-havingjumpedoffMosesMabhidarecently-andalso enjoysmountain biking andwatch-ing Formula 1 racing.

“‘LoveLivingLife’’ isTheCowssloganand it’s pretty apt in my life.”

Reidhasbeen traininghard, “But notinmy cow suit!We have a huge event onthe eve of theAmashovawhere our CowCycling kit andCowSuitswill be handedout.”

“The first target is R6 000 and youget some top-of-the-line cycling shortsand a shirt. The next target is R20 000where you get the full cow suit and thenthere is a corporate sponsorship whereR30 000 gets you a pie bicycle,” Reid ex-plained, who has been hard at work or-ganising events to raise money.

“I really want to raise awareness ofthe reality of childhoodcancer (bywear-ing the outfit) and try and support thecountless people who are affected by it.Thisdiseaseknowsnocolour,noageandno bounds. We need to stand togetherand help those being affected.

“I’ve never done this sort of thing be-fore, but I plan on doing a lot more of it

His outstanding performance inthe 2012/2013 season did no go un-noticed. Apart from being votedBatsman of the Season, he alsoclaimed the coveted Player of theYear award. With such outstandingcredentials, the crowning glory forthe talented youngster waswhen helifted the President’s Award.

SAIESHAN Logenathan and Shivan Singh ofStanger Manor Secondary School clinched the Ilembe and District Cricket Union under 15 double wickettitle after beating fellow school pupils, SulemanMoolla and Zamir Maraj in the finals played at theCountry Club Ground on Thursday.

Saieshan and Shivan booked their place in thefinal after beating Adesh Bageloo and Mayuran Logenathan in the first semifinal clash. In the secondsemifinal, Suleman and Zami edged out 13yearold Alex Pillay and Santir Bageloo to secure theirplace in the final.

In the final, Saieshan won the toss and electedto bat first. They posted 32/1 in their allotted four

overs. InreplySulemanandZamirwerebundledoutfor 17/2. There was some reprieve for Suleman whowas voted player of the tournament.

Saieshan was adjudged batsman of the tournament with spinner Santir Bageloo claiming thebowling accolade.
