This is a loss of income for six months,” said Harilall. He said that several meetings were held between upper management and the lecturers. “Impassioned pleas were made to management [to allow] the lecturers to finish at the end of the year so students don’t suffer, and allowing trials and final exams to run smoothly.” When asked what reasons were given for the termination of the contracts, Harilal said as per the UI9 form, it stated “item num- ber five”, meaning the end of a contract. “This does not make sense as this termination comes in the middle of the college year. “The mission of the college is that the interest of students must come first, now how does this put the interest of students first. “They are being left without lecturers at a prime time of their year.” The matter has been reported to the Education Labour Relations Council, which is investigating the lecturers’ cases. THOSElivingandworking in theShaka’s Rock area are con-cerned about the vast amount

of water and chemical run-off thecoast is exposed to.

Owner of Ocean Gorge guest-house Leon Groenveld said he hasseen people wash vehicles and rub-bish bins at nearby complexes and isconcerned about thedetergents run-ning into the sea.

Hesaid the excess water couldal-so be compromising the strength ofthecliffuponwhichhisandsurround-ing homes and complexes are built.

“A lot of water comes through thearea. The storm- water run-off joinsanatural streamnext tomyproperty, and lots ofwater justwashesover thecliffs.

“Thereisapathalongthetopofthecliff, a great tourist attraction, which

is not passable in some areas due tothe water and sludge run-off fromexisting buildings and nearby con-structionsites. I justwantpeopletobemore aware of the sensitivity of ourcoastline,” said Groenveld.

He said that a section of cliff hadfallen recently, whichmay have beenexacerbatedbythecontinuousflowofwater.

Pebble Beach body corporatetrustee Noel Hunt said they use a 45-gallondrumforpeopletowashharm-ful substances likepaintandconcreteoff their tools.

“There are incidenceswhere peo-ple use detergents to wash their carsandsuch, but we domonitor the situ-ation closely. The method of usingthe drum works for us. Once theharmful materials have dried wesend it to landfill, where at least itwon’t go into the sea,” he said.

He said this is important as many

people harvest mussels from therocksbelowPebbleBeach,andchem-icals wouldmake them dangerous toeat.

“We are behind in being eco-friendly in this country, but as it be-comesmorebuiltup,especiallyalongour coastline, we have to be moreawareandeachofusmustdoourbit,”he said

Dolphin Coast Conservancy chairDi Jones said this issue applies to thewhole of the North Coast.

“I recently saw paint beingwashed onto the beach from a com-plex in Ballito where a revamp wasbeing done.

“People needtothinkaboutwherethe materials from activities likewashing cars or building are actuallygoing,” said Jones.

“Each person doing this kind ofthing turns it intoabig issue. If every-one is aware and does their part, beaches will be cleaner. The publicmust play its role and notify authori-ties if they see pollution,” she said.

Shesaidthedegradationofthecliffcould not be purely attributed to thehighwatercontent, asit isacoalseamand known to be weak.

AWakefieldsmanagingagentsaidthey encourage people in their com-plexes touseenvironmentally friend-ly or bio-degradable detergents.

“We do promote more ‘green’ be-

haviour, but it is still not as enforcedinSouthAfricaas othercountriesyet,so it is difficult.

“Atonecomplexresidentsactuallyuse water from the stream to watertheir garden and flush loos. I thinkthis is a great way of saving potablewater and using ‘grey’ water,” shesaid.

I HAVE been surrounded by strong females all mylife.

My mom being my first role model. While contemplating national Women’s Month, my thoughtsturned to her, and to the other strong women whohave shaped my life.

My mom could do everything. She was widowedvery young, but her simple “can do” attitude tackledany challenge, whether fixing a lawn mower or a bicycle tyre or turning a variety of summer fruit into jams, chutneys, preserves and dried fruit.

She was a woman who, with the scantiest of resources, ensured all four of us completed a tertiaryeducation, even if it meant that she went without anyluxuries and treats for many years.

She taught me that a superwoman isn’t born, shejust accepts all the challenges thrown her way.

My two sisters remain my constant reminders ofmy mom.

Therearetimeswhenoneofuswillsayordosomething and the instant reminder of our mother is sostrong, that we can’t help but laugh and recogniseher legacy.

My sisters are my daughters’ “go to” people, whoarejustaphonecallawayfromofferingasympatheticear or some advice.

My motherinlaw is still a big role model for ourfamily.

At over 80, she is still a force to be reckoned with. She lives in a big house, which is kept spotless

without any help. She knows exactly how to cook the perfect roast

lamb or chicken, her array of homebaked biscuits arelegendary and she knows exactly what happens onthe local and international news scene.

Icancallheranytimeoftheday, forachat, avirtualcuddle or ask her to talk me through an issue, andshe is always there.

Throughout my working career, there has been anumber of female bosses, some stronger than others.

Starting as a young cadet at the erstwhile department of Foreign Affairs, there were a handful of women who paved the way for our first “madam ambassador”.

I have learnt from every one of them that the biggest lesson was not that “we have to adapt to reachthe top in a man’s world”, but simply that “we haveto give our best and reach the top”.

Away from work and career, a large group of girlfriends have become my substitute “sisters”, some ofwhom are around the corner and share my daily experiences.

Others live thousands of miles away, but their support and love can always be relied upon and luckilyconversation is just as far away as the nearest computer.

No matter where your feminine supporters are, they will always be there for you.

Celebrating strongwomen

CHRISTA VAN DER WALT

RE: Ripostes and reprimands from Messrs.Naidoo and Smith.

As far as insults on education standards go,I will be the first to admit there are gaps inmyownunderstandingof life, theuniverseandev-erything.

ThemoreI learnthelessIrealiseIknow;butto quote Carl Sagan's wife when he died: “Hedidn't want to believe, he wanted to know.”

My main theme in my previous letter wasthat evolution has nothing to do with racism, which I still stand by.

Re: My bad debating attitude - personal at-tacks andmockery - I have an irreverent senseof humour andhave always disrespectedpiety

and dogma.Over the years this has evolved into a totally

incurable, full-blownsatiricalsenseofhumourcompounded by my addiction to such Britishinstitutions as Monty Python.

Thecurrentcreationismvsevolutiondebatehas been simmering in the Fever and Weeklyletters column for several years since a previ-ous editor (Desiree) wrote a satirical articleridiculing Darwinism which I found amusingand felt compelled to respond in kind.

Long may the debates continue - there aremany countries which would not allow us thisfreedom to argue religion or politics.

David Lawson

Bang and gaps enjoy thedemocratic right to debate

IT would appear from recent correspondencetoyournewspaperthatMrLawsonisnotexact-ly flavour of the month at the moment.

Havingreadhis letter in theFever I findverylittle to criticise in it.

He was simply pointing out that one of theprincipal characters in the Old testament wasnot a particularly moral or pleasant person.

The 10 Commandments were obviouslymeant for the common people.

As forMsNaidoo's assertion thatdinosaurswere plodding around planet Earth when thefirst books of the Old Testament were com-posed, is plainly preposterous and against allreason.

Peter Hill

Following the ‘big bang’ argument

I REFER to the story ‘ANC KwaDukuza sideswithPalestine’published lastweek.CouncillorNel Sewraj is on the wrong side of history.

Palestine is an occupied stolen land whosecitizens are subjected to the most inhumanconditions.

How can it ever be accepted that a criminalcould justify his crime by claiming that he wasdefending himself when committing thecrime?

Israel has no respect for themanyUN reso-lutions or the judgment of the InternationalCriminal Court.

Palestinians have the right to claim backtheir land and freedom.

ItisthePalestiniansthathavetherighttode-fend themselves against amost brutal occupa-tion.

If Cllr Nel is really concerned about justiceand freedom he should visit Palestine as theANC has done.

We who support the cause of the Palestin-ians salute the stance of the ANC and appreci-atethesupportof theKwaDukuzaMunicipalityand the mayor Ricardo Mthembu.

Aluta Continua Viva Palestine.

69 Mahathma Ghandi Street,KwaDukuza

MYstanceconcerning therecentPalestinesolidaritymarchin KwaDukuza has already been clarified publicly. There-fore, I will deliberate the matter no further. Subsequentlythere is another matter arising out of this march that maybeofconcerntotheratepayersofKwaDukuza.Itwasreport-ed that themarch received significantmedia coverage andmany civic bodies, various organisations and over 2000peoplesupportedit.Also,theANCandthemayorapplaudedthe event, KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) contributedR80 000 towards it, andsomeonepresumptuously claimedthat it was largest march in KwaDukuza in recent history.Yet,what isofconcerntomeis that inthemidstof theappar-ent success of the event, no person or organisation wantsto take responsibility for it. Let me elaborate.

ThePalestine solidaritymarchwas an item tabled in the11th hour at a council meeting on 31 July. The item statedexplicitly that the Stanger Muslim Association (SMA) ap-proached the Office of theMayor and requested to hold themarch. So according to KDM themarchwas clearly the ini-tiative and brainchild of the SMA. However, it is cause forconcern that the SMAhas subsequently statedquite the op-posite. As a case in point, the public relations officer for theSMA has openly stated that the march was the initiative ofKDM alone – not the SMA, and that the SMA was only re-

quested by KDM to plan and co-ordinate the march. Nowsomeone is not telling the truth. Either KDM or the SMA isa liar.

If KDMhas lied and concealed details about thismatter,it would seriously damage the municipality’s credibility.Ratepayers will blame KDM for misusing public funds, municipal officials and Exco for corruption, and themayorfor attempting to improvehis ratingswith theMuslim com-munity.

If the SMA has lied, they put their veracity as a religiousorganisation at stake. The community will lose faith in theSMA and its leaders for their apparent failure to modeltruth and honesty as a religious organisation, and formanipulating KDM and themayor to further the agenda ofthe SMA.

Whatever the case may be, I refrain from making pre-judgments on the matter — suffice to say, it is doubtless ofseriousconcernthatKDMapprovesandcontributesfinanc-es for events that no one claims responsibility for.

So KDM, and other organisations in this municipality, must stop assuming that all ratepayers in thismunicipalityare naive and undiscerning.

Reverend Nel Sewraj, ACDP councillorKwaDukuza Municipality

Who’s the liar KDM or SMA?

THEStangerMuslimAssociation (SMA) noteswith interestthevariousresponsesreceivedregardingthePalestineSoli-darityMarchrecentlyheld inKwaDukuza. Inparticular, wenote Pastor Nel Sewraj's objection to the march and theACDP's unfortunate stance on the conflict in Palestine, ac-knowledging theseas indisputablerightsentrenched inourconstitution. However, there aremany inconsistencies and fallacies inthese arguments which we wish toclarify, in a clear, responsible andnon-derogatory manner.

Islam is a universal religion ofpeaceandgoodwill strongly advocat-ingnon-discriminationonthebasisofrace, colour, creed and/or other religious values or beliefs. As such,Muslimsare commanded in theQuran, to loveandrespect all God's people, more especially Jews and Chris-tians, being direct descendants of the Abrahamic faith.

ToopenlydeclareourhatredforallJewswouldthereforebe inconsistent with Islam.

Weareopposedto theZionist ideologyofsupremacyandracism which has led to the denial of rights, dispossession

theANCgovernmentforitspro-Palestinestance.Beingtheirinitiative,wewerenot involvedwith the costs of themarch.

A budget was presented to council which at the time in-cluded advertising and transport costs.

It was later decided by the committee not to hire buses, but to mobilise people within close proximity of the town.

Thecoststhereforeshouldbecon-siderably lower with advertising inlocalnewspapersmakingupthebulkof the cost.

The ACDPwould also have us be-lieve that it is not possible to em-pathise with the Palestinian causewhilst also expressing concern and

sympathy towards other problems or strife in our world.Asanassociation, wewill continueshowingoursolidari-

and expulsion of the indigenous population ofPalestine.

To understand this as a South African, wedonothave to look too farbackatourownhis-tory. The evil, draconian system of apartheid, degradedand forcibly removedourpeople in-to ''bantustans".

Thesituation,since1948,isworseinIsrael.78% of the Palestinian population was tor-tured and expelled to neighbouring countrieswith many killed in the ethnic cleansing pro-cess.

The remaining Palestinians are to this day, confined to tiny swathes of land in Gaza andthe West Bank, devoid of any human rights. Are these not acts of extreme aggression andterrorism? Is it surprising then thatHamas, indefending its people, will react with the sameviolence and terror inflicted upon them?Wasthis not how the ANCwas similarly portrayedas terrorists whilst fighting for freedom?

The ACDPmakes reference to a statementby an Imam about the Promised Land. As anassociation,werefrainfromstatingsuchopin-ionssinceitisrelativelyeasytofindindividualsto promote one's viewpoint, on both sides ofthe argument. We prefer to rely directly onGod'swordas the truthandas recorded, "TheLordmadea covenantwithAbraham, saying:‘And Iwill give unto thee, and to thy seed afterthee, all the land of Canaan for an everlastingpossession’".

If it is assumed that Palestine is the land re-ferred to by God, can it be denied that it waspromised to both Muslims and Jews sinceAbrahamhad twosons, Ishmael and Isaac? IsitnotaviolationofGod'sdecreethatonegrouphas usurped control over the land and keepsthe other under military occupation and sub-jection? Is it fair that Muslims and Christiansdo not have unrestricted access to their holysites?

TheACDP'sobjectiontothemarchis there-fore surprising considering that PalestinianChristians are also be persecuted in Israel. Toset thematterstraight, theKwaDukuzamarchwas initiatedby theKwaDukuzaMunicipality.

the copious amounts of sugar we’reconsuming because manufacturesare just so cunning.

Insteadof taggingthem‘addictive’and‘dangerous’,they’reveiledundernames we won’t easily recognise.

We’ve all heard of fructose, su-croseandlactose,butwhataboutorb-itol, maltitol, erythritol and xylitol?

1. Eat breakfastEating breakfast has not only

proven to help people realise theirweight loss goals, but the added vita-mins and minerals provide the extraoomphassociatedwithmentalacuityand emotional wellbeing.

2. Avoid the canteenOr the local babbie for thatmatter.

All those sweet temptationswill have

3. Don’t remove chocolates offyour list entirely

Ask any woman...giving up yourfavourite chocolate will only makeyou resentful in the end. Feelingstarved and angry is a sure-fire wayof losing determination. Grant your-self at leastone ‘cheatday’whereyoucanindulgeinthetemptationyoulongfor the most.

4.Chooseplain insteadof sweet-ened

Ever wondered what the secret toyour neighbour’s gorgeously sveltefigure is?Aside frombenefitting fromanactive lifestyle, sheprobablywalksright passed the artificially sweet-enedyogurtandopts for thenaturallyflavoured one instead.

5. Eat fruitYes,asboringas it sounds, fruitof-

blood sugar levels from rising.6. Get more Zzzz...Getting a proper night’s rest could

also help. How, youmay be speculat-ing? Sleeping naturally decreasesanxietyandariseinstress, oftenleadsto a rise in your cravings.

1: Exercise controls weightExercise can help prevent excessweight gain or help maintain weightloss.

When you engage in physicalactivity, you burn kilojoules. Themore intense the activity, the morekilojoules you burn.

You don't need to set aside largechunks of time for exercise to reap

weight-loss benefits. If you can’t do an actual workout,

get more active throughout the dayin simpleways—bytakingthe stairsinstead of the lift or revving up yourhousehold chores.

2: Exercise combats health condi-tions and diseases

Worried about heart disease? Nomatterwhat your currentweight, be-

ing active boosts high-density lipo-protein (HDL), or “good,” cholesteroland decreases unhealthy triglycer-ides.

This one-two punch keeps yourblood flowing smoothly, which de-creases your risk of cardiovasculardiseases. In fact, regular physical ac-tivitycanhelpyoupreventormanagea widerange of healthproblemsand

concerns, including stroke, metabol-ic syndrome,type2diabetes,depres-sion, certain types of cancer, arthritisand falls.

11Simple springfashion makeover>> Fashion items that will save your wardrobe this spring

SPRING is a time for new beginnings, butwhat do you wear when it’s all four sea-sons in one day?

The key to stylish transitional dressing islayering.

A few simple items in your wardrobe canhelp you look chic, yet comfortable no matterwhat the weather.

Here are suggestions and how to wearthem:

Lightweight jacketA lightweight jacket is easy to throw over a

dress, toporblouse.Selectastylethatcaneasilybe dressed up or down to get maximumwear-ablity. For example, a lightweight neutral-coloured jacket can be dressed up with a skirtor dressed down with jeans. The perfect styleand fabric will depend on your lifestyle. If youare a casual dresser, a denim jacket will workwell, but if you wear mostly tailored styles, astretch cotton-lined jacket may work better.

Closed or peep-toe shoeWhen the weather is too chilly to wear

sandals, but too warm to wear boots, theclosed-toeshoesavestheday.Tryafashionablebrogueorballetpumpfor flatsorahigh-heeledpump,wedge or stacked heel if youwant someextra height.

Neutral topsA few simple neutral coloured tops (e.g.

black or navy)willmake layering really simpleand stylish. If your favourite sleeveless dress isgoing to leave youout in the cold, addaneutraltopunderneath. As longasthestyleof thedressis conducive to layering, it will give you a lotmore wear throughout year.

Three-quarter-sleeve lengthThree-quarter sleeves are great for in-be-

tween seasons, not to mention that they offerupper arm coverage. Three-quarter sleevesalso allow clever and fun layering. You cancreate the colour-blocking lookbywearingonecolour underneath and another on top. If youhaveatopthatlooksabitworseforwear, simplyadd another one on top with a shorter sleevelength.

A few simple items in your wardrobe canhelp you look chic, yet comfortable, nomatter what the weather.

DOyouthinkyoudon'thaveabikinibody?Wellthink again.

Women are constantly told to work on theirbikini bodies, almost as if their lives dependedon it.

Flip through any celebrity magazine orbrowse any women’s lifestyle website andyou’ll find articles and galleries providing tipsand easy tricks on getting beach-ready – espe-cially come summer.

And don’t forget the magnitude of imagegalleries on Hollywood’s top celebrity bikinibodies. In fact, there are entire magazineswhose existence is built solely on the spying, spotting, blaming and praising of celebs inswimsuits.

But what does beach-ready or the perfectbikini body actually even mean?

We know that in the mainstream media itrefers to the one body we have been taught tovalue above all others— the slim, young celeb-rity or model figure.

This is extremely marginalising as it auto-matically dubs other bodies as “problematic”or “fixable”.

Are you fed up with society telling them tocover up (andwith the rise of beautifullymadeplus-size beachwear forwomen), curvywom-en around the world are now taking to thebeach snapping and sharing pictures of them-selves on social media using the hashtag#Fatkini.

Let’s face it, watching skinny women frolicon the beach in multi-coloured and patternedbikinis as you lie (fully clothed) on your towel, sweating your ass off, is just no fun.

The hashtag has created conversationaroundthe topicof redefining the term“beach-body” or “bikini body”, looking at its harshpolicy of exclusion. It has since ushered incamaraderie between women encouragingeach other to stop feeling self-conscious,barredor judged forwearingabikini inpublic.

It’s not ideal that thishashtagwasneeded inthe firstplace, butat least itexposes themassesto an alternative beach body, onewhich is justas beach worthy as its skinny counterpart.

He was so inspired that the booktook just 12 days to write.

“I just started asking myself whypeople cheat as it is very hurtful. Iwanted to offer solutions to helppeople deal with it.

“The book is an easy, entertainingread that uses sports analogy to de-scribe the various types of people orcheaters,” said Ntuli.

Ntuli started from humble begin-nings and has worked hard to unfurlhis wings.

Having grown up in rural NorthCoast areas, attending ShakaskraalSecondary and working as a carguard to earn money to study, hereally has “come out on top”.

“If you work hard and believe inyourself you can achieve yourdreams,” encouraged Ntuli.

Strangely Ntuli never saw himselfas a writer when growing up, butrather a sportsman.

He received a cricket scholarshipto attend Umlazi Comtech during hislatter high school years and, aftersaving up, studied sports manage-ment at Durban University of Tech-nology.

KSST avenge defeat>> Volleyball association prepares for women’s tournament

WEEKLY REPORTER

KSST Volleyball Club avengedtheir first round league defeatat thehandsof reigning cham-

pions Grove End with an emphatic2-0 win in their second round en-counter on Thursday night at the as-sociation courts.

Grove End took an early 4-2 leadbefore KSST quickly leveled thescores at 5-5 to stay in the hunt forhonours. It was dubbed a “Neil Peru-malvsCameronSinghshowdown”asboth players demonstrated their at-tacking prowess at the courts.

Perumal gave Grove End a com-fortable 13-9 lead, but Singh quicklysnuffedout the leadwithaflurryofat-tacks from power to level the scoresat 13-13. KSST took a slender 19-18before their prodigal son, Lionel Jaliwas introduced into the fray forLloyd

Chetty.Trailing 20-24, Cyprin Tulsiram
