On May 1st Pope Francis reconsecrated the United States under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As is the custom during May all the faithful are encouraged to pray the rosary. The Holy Father has composed the following prayer to conclude the Rosary during the Month of May.

O Mary, You shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the foot of the cross, were united with Jesus’ suffering, and persevered in your faith.

“Protectress of the Roman people”, you know our needs, and we know that you will provide, so that, as at Cana in Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this time of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us. For he took upon himself our suffering, and burdened himself with our sorrows to bring us, through the cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God; Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from every danger, O Glorious and Blessed Virgin.

Stewardship Moment May May 24, 2020 - 7th Sunday of Easter (The Ascension of the Lord)

“I am praying for them…” JOHN 17: 9

Prayer is the foundation of our Faith and the foundation of Stewardship. Pray in good times and in bad. Prayer is always the first best option in any situation, not just the last resort. Pray for friends and family and for those that don’t treat you very well. Pray to give praise, to thank and to ask God for help. Pray to see what God wants you to do with the gifts He has given you.

We encourage our parishioners to patronize our bulletin sponsors. It is through their generosity that our weekly bulletin comes to you at no publishing cost.

For as the heavens tower over the earth, so his mercy towers over those who fear him. As far as the east is from the west,

so far has he removed our sins from us. Ps 103:11-12

From the Catholic Health Association of the United States:

For Peace in Anxiety During the Coronavirus Pandemic

Loving God, we come to you full of anxiety about what may happen in the coming days and weeks. Shower us with the peace Jesus promised to his disciples, and make us into steady pillars for those around us. In this time of uncertainty and epidemic, wake us up to the reminder that we are not alone.

Even as we are asked to keep our distance from others, help us to find ways to reach out to those who need our support. We pray especially for those whose incomes and livelihoods are threatened. For the children who will miss meals due to school closures. For those already isolated, lonely and scared. Loving God, give them your peace, and through our hands ensure they have what they need.

Sustain, strengthen and protect all caregivers. Bless them as they offer compas-sionate care and show selfless courage in the face of risk.

Remind us, each time we wash our hands, that in our baptism you call us to let go of our fears and live in joy, peace, and hope. Amen.

harm to the lives of people. We have a huge amount of work to do. Alone, we can do nothing. But with God all things are possible. Because Jesus ascended to heaven, He is ready to be with us, and bless us, and fill us with all the grace we need to make heaven happen here on earth. We simply need to be willing to let Him do it, through us, as He has chosen. So let us resolve to get to work and build God’s kingdom here on earth until that time we will join Him in the heavenly kingdom.

Fr. Kevin’s Reflection continued from page 5.

Fr. Kevin - Ascension of the Lord – Cycle A - 2017+ Acts 1:1-11; Ephesians; Matthew 28:

After 33 years the circle is complete. The Son of God, who came down from heaven taking on our humble human form, returns in

triumph to be reunited with his Father. Father and Son are once again perfectly united in heaven, as they had been for all eternity, but now with one differ-ence. Our humanity, which had been separated from God because of sin, has now been reunited with God through the humanity of Jesus. You could even say that earth now is united to heaven, as we the Church on earth, which is the Body of Christ, remain united with Jesus who is the head.

But what is so important about our belief in the ascension? Why did Jesus have to return to heaven? I see three important answers to this question. The first has to do with His glorified body. If Jesus were still living here on this earth in bodily form He would be living here with His glorified body. In His glorified body Jesus has the ability to appear to everyone. The problem that would happen is that most of us would probably just sit back and wait for Him to appear to us. Instead of bringing other people to Jesus, which He has commanded us to do, we would most likely just sit back and let Him do all the work.

By His ascension to heaven you might say that Jesus “got out of the way” so that we could do the work he has commissioned us to do, namely, preaching the gospel and baptizing all the nations. Remember when John the Baptist said, “I must decrease and He must increase.” In a way, this is what Jesus has done. He has physically gotten out of the way so that we can increase in our faith; so that we might more fully become the Body of Christ. Through the waters of baptism we became the Body of Christ. Therefore, as the Body of Christ, we are the glorified, visible presence of Christ in our world.

Jesus has chosen us to be the ones who share the gospel with others because He has faith in our ability to do this. Each time we bring others to Jesus we grow more deeply in our faith. We can do this because He has promised us that He will be with us always. And so, in a way, you can say that while He has ascended to heaven, He has never really left us.

After Jesus ascended to heaven, the Holy Spirit came to dwell on the entire earth. The Holy Spirit makes Jesus’ presence known to us, and through us the Holy Spirit continues to reveal Jesus to countless numbers of people in multitudes of places, all at the same time. Jesus makes himself present to all believers through the sacraments of His Church. He does this most fully through the Eucharist. Through the prayer of the bishops and priests, consecrated by the Holy Spirit, and acting in the person of Christ, the Eucharist is made available everywhere. Everywhere the Eucharist is cele-brated, Christ is very really present.

A second reason that it is important for Jesus to be in heaven is that God has made him judge of heaven and earth. Jesus, who was human like us in all things but sin, knows how difficult it is for us humans. He knows how difficult it is to do and say the right things. He knows how great and many are the temptations that would lead us away from him. And so, he is a just judge,

Continued on page 5 Continued on page 6.

Continued from page 4

a compassionate judge. This means that when we die and meet Jesus face to face, he will judge us with full compassion, understanding, and love. This doesn’t mean we can do anything we darn well please. No! Because we believe this we have the obligation to live as Christ expects us to live.

This leads us then to the third important reason why Jesus ascended to heaven. Too often, we live our faith like those disciples on the mountain. After the Lord ascended to heaven they just stood there with their eyes fixed on heaven. Too often we limit our practice of faith with the focus on the end reward of heaven. What we do, or don’t do, is motivated mostly by our desire to get to heaven or our fear of ending up in hell. When we reduce our faith to this it becomes nothing more than a scorecard faith, a keeping track of sins and good works, hoping that our good works will be enough to get us to heaven.

When we reduce our faith to this it runs the risk of becoming self-centered. It becomes only about me and my personal relationship with God. And then we can begin to buy into the many false notions, “I don’t have to go to Church to be a good Christian. I don’t need to do all those things or follow all those rules. I can just be a good person and still get to heaven.” Authentic Christian faith is not that at all. Authentic Christian faith is not just about me and what God has done for me. It is also about what God wants me to do for others. This is why those angels who appeared on the mountain more or less said, “Why are you just standing here looking at the sky? Jesus will return, but now you’ve got work to do. So get to work.”

That is what authentic Christian faith is all about. Because we believe in heaven, we have the obligation to share that good news with others. Fortunately for us, those first disciples finally got it, and they got to work spreading the good news. If they had not we would not be here today, because no one else would ever have known Jesus.

Today, then, the job is ours. Just as Jesus commissioned those first disciples to go out and tell the good news, He also commissions us to do the same. We have to stop approaching our faith only on the hope that if we avoid sin, and do enough good things, we might someday get to heaven. We have to live our faith as though heaven is possible right now. We have to stop waiting for heaven, and instead make heaven happen here on earth.

We do this first by resolving to stop sinning. We have to stop the cruelty of talking about our neighbors when we get together for our coffee parties and nstead look inside ourselves at what we might do to help our neighbors. We have to stop being lazy when it comes to attending mass and instead be diligent not only about being here, but being in the right frame of mind. We have to stop being ignorant about our faith, and instead take the opportunities to learn more about our faith. We have to stop being stingy with our time, our talents, and our treasures and instead recognize that all that we have belongs to God, and has been entrusted to us to build up God’s kingdom here on earth.

We must also start doing things like encouraging other people in the ways of faith. We must be concerned about the poor, the homeless, the hungry. We must be the ones who help to change unjust laws and political systems that bring
