In 1 Corinthians 13:13 Jesus tells us the greatest of these is Love. Living in a marriage that is missing love can be difficult. If you have given up hope that your marriage can and will get better, ask your spouse to consider attending a Retrouvaille program. Retrouvaille is an international Christian based ministry that offers a three-stage program to help couples improve their marriages. First, a weekend program is attended, followed by post weekend meetings. Finally, an on-going monthly small group of couples gather for support and growth. If improving your marriage is important to you, reach out today for more Information at (701) 356-7962 Or visit our website: HelpOurMarriage.com

18th Sunday - Cycle A – 2020+ Isaiah 55:1-2; Romans 8: 35,37-39; Matthew 14:13-21

Whenever we hear the story of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes we are mindful of those who experience physical hunger. The many who frequent our soup kitchens and food pantries on a regular

basis. The homeless person holding up a sign “will work for food.” The plight of children who go to bed hungry every night. The faces of the thousands of starving women and children in developing nations. This reminds us of the Corporal Work of Mercy to feed the hungry and give drink to the thirsty.

This is a legitimate interpretation of this parable and it should move us to a deeper awareness and desire to respond to those who are in need. I would suggest however that we look at this miracle from another perspective. The reason that so many people were gathered together that day is that they had been following Jesus throughout the day to listen to him speak. In other words they were all experiencing something much deeper than mere physical hunger. They were experiencing a spiritual hunger.

Each one of us, because of the reality of original sin, enters this world hungering for God. God is the only One who can satisfy our hungry hearts. Modern society tries to satisfy this hunger through our obsession with entertainment, consumerism and even the many forms of addictions and addictive behaviors that plague people. Each of these things temporarily stimulates the senses and so they give the impression that they are satisfying our hunger. The truth of the matter is that these things are merely junk food for the soul. None of these things can satisfy that deep hunger we have for the Lord.

It is no wonder that these types of activities -- obsessions with entertainment, consumerism (shopping) and addictive behaviors -- has increased dramatically as church attendance has declined. Whether or not we believe in God, whether or not we take the time to worship God, we are still hungering for God. As we, in our modern society reject God, the only one who can satisfy the hungry heart -- we are going to seek other ways to satisfy our hearts.

To this, I would say that Jesus has given us an important model of how we are to respond to the current secular crisis. It is the very same thing that he told his disciples who came to Him with the request to send them away so that they might get something to eat. Our Lord said to them, “There is no need for them to go away: give them some food yourselves.” “ . . . give them some food yourselves.”

In other words Jesus knew that they had within them everything they needed to satisfy the hunger of others. The same can be said for us. For those of us who call ourselves disciples, for those of us who are sitting here week after week being fed at the Eucharist, we have everything we need to feed others who are hungering for God. What we have is not loaves and fishes. We have something even greater. We have our faith. We have our Lord in the Holy Eucharist. We have God’s very self to give to others.

And so how do we do this? How do we give others the food we have ourselves? Again Jesus has given us the answer in the Corporal Works of Mercy: “Feed the hungry. Give drink to the thirsty. Clothe the naked. Shelter the homeless.

Continued on page 5

Comfort the sick. Visit the imprisoned. Bury the dead,” and the Spiritual Works of Mercy: “Instruct the ignorant. Counsel the doubtful. Admonish sinners. Bear wrongs patiently. Forgive offenses willingly. Comfort the afflicted. Pray for the living and the dead.” And so to feed those who are hungering for the Lord is a spiritual act of mercy. Very specifically it falls under the first three “instruct the ignorant, counsel the doubtful and admonish the sinner.” But how do we do these things and not come off as judgmental? After all the one scripture verse that many people seem to know is “judge not lest you be judged.” This is especially the case when people are choosing things contrary to the Lord.

First we need to remember that when we are instructing and correcting people we need to do so as a pure act of love. We need to do so with charity. We cannot simply say, “stop sinning.” We cannot say, “you are going straight to hell,” even if the choices they are making are of a serious nature. When instructing and correcting people we need to talk about God’s mercy. We need to radiate God’s love to them. And we need to remain patient.

We will have these virtues of mercy, love and patience for others only by first experiencing God’s mercy, love and patience with us. In other words, we need to have a regular practice of examining our own conscience and confessing our own personal sin to God. When we do this on a regular basis we will know God’s mercy, love and patience and we will then have these things to give to others.

God has given us a model in how to share the message of God’s mercy in Pope Francis. He, like Jesus is quick to extend God’s mercy. He doesn’t suggest however that we ignore sin and leave people in their midst of their wrong choices. Listen to an excerpt from Pope Francis’ very first homily to the world.

“I think we . . . are the people who, on the one hand want to listen to Jesus, but on the other hand, at times, like to find a stick to beat others with, to condemn others. And Jesus has this message for us: mercy. I think . . . that this is the Lord’s most powerful message: mercy. It was he himself who said: “I did not come for the righteous. . . I came for sinners” (Mk 2:17)

It is not easy to entrust oneself to God’s mercy, because it is an abyss beyond our comprehension. But we must! “Oh, Father, if you knew my life, you would not say that to me!” “Why, what you done?” “Oh, I am a great sinner!” “All the better! Go to Jesus: he likes you to tell him these things!” He forgets, he has a very special capacity for forgetting. He forgets, he kisses you, he embraces you and he simply says to you: “Neither do I condemn you; go, and sin no more” (John 8:11). That is the only advice he gives you. After a month, if we are in the same situation . . . Let us go back to the Lord. The Lord never tires of forgiving: never! It is we who tire of asking his forgiveness. Let us ask for the grace not to tire of asking forgiveness, because he never tires of forgiving. Let us ask for this grace.”

And so, my brothers and sisters, today in this mass, Jesus is giving us everything we need to feed those who are hungering for God. Pray for the grace and courage to share God’s mercy, love and patience with those whom you love, and those whom you meet this week. Pray for the grace to feed those who are hungering for God.
