Reflections from Exile

During the past month I have been blessed to hear many inspirational stories from people that have flowed from the experience of social isolation. Some have heard the Lord speak to their heart in some profound way. Others have come to a new awareness about the sacraments of the Church. Still others have shared with them ways in which their family has drawn closer together.

We would like to begin compiling these stories and reflections to share with others. If you would like to share your experience, please write it down and send it to us so that we can publish your story in our bulletin. You can submit your story with your name or anonymously. Send to [email protected] or mail to: 413 Brewster St. E. Harvey, ND 58341.

Below is our first sharing:

God’s Blessings

The gifts of grace and blessings offered from our good Lord during this time of isolation, have been too many to name, so I will disclose only two. There is nothing extraordinary about what has happened here in our home, but that is why this time has been so special to me. I have realized that the extraordinary is found within the ordinary. And that is how I have been able to see God at work in my family’s lives.

At the very beginning of this whole social distancing thing, I made the choice to fix my eyes on Jesus and to do my best at receiving His gifts of grace. By doing this I have found a much greater joy and contentment in my vocation.

During this time of nowhere to go and no one to go see, God has presented the perfect opportunity to focus more on my family. I graciously accepted! All this extra time together has enabled me to gain a deeper appreciation for my children as individuals. I have come to better know their unique and beautiful personali-ties which has equipped me with a knowledge of how to love and nurture them according to their specific needs and desires.

My second sharing is that our family now prays a daily Rosary together. This time of prayer brings an indescribable peace and unity that we all look forward to. There have been days that my children are the ones who come to me with beads in their little hands, telling me that it’s past our prayer time with the Rosary. It melts my heart that they have this desire just as I know it is pleasing to Our Blessed Mother.

Neither of these two disclosures are anything extraordinary, but I have come to believe that it is in the everyday ordinariness where God’s love needs to be recognized and graciously received.

Divine Mercy Timeline

The Last Supper John, the beloved disciple, lays his head on the breast of Jesus.

Easter Sunday Night Jesus appears to the disciples in the upper room Thomas is not present.

Sunday after Easter (The Eighth Day) Jesus appears again to the disciples in the upper room Thomas is with them.

St Gertrude (1265-1302) In a mystical vision sees herself at the Last Supper She lays her head on the breast of Jesus and hears a message of profound love and mercy.

Bishop Jansen (1585-1638) Proclaimed a heretical teaching that one must be perfect before receiving the Lord in Holy Communion. He forbade the laity from receiving communion in his diocese. As a result of this the heresy of Jansenism became widespread throughout Europe.

Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690) In a mystical vision was given the image of the Sacred Heart The Lord said to her, “Behold the heart that loves so much but is so little loved.”

Louis de Montfort (1673-1716) Established the Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

St John Eudes (1601-1680) Encouraged devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and Sacred Heart of Jesus.

St Maximillian Kolbe (1894-1941) Established the Missionaries of the Immaculata to continue the devotions.

St. Faustina (1905-1938) The Lord gives the entire message of Divine Mercy.

Pope John Paul II (2000) Canonizes Faustina and declares the Second Sunday of Easter (The Eighth Day) as Divine Mercy Sunday.

But he was pierced for our sins, crushed for our iniquity. He bore the punishment that makes us whole, by his wounds we were healed. Is 53:5

The Sunday Collection is a Sacrifice

The Offertory in the Mass is not simply a way of collecting money to pay the bills and expenses of our parish. It is also the way that we each enter into the sacrifice of the Mass. Our offering of money represents our offering of self.

Although we cannot come together for Mass, we still have the basic operating expenses to meet. Because of this we encourage you to continue to make your Sunday Offering. The simplest way is to drop it in the mail. You may also bring your offering envelope to the rectory. If there is no answer the envelope will slide under the front door. St. Cecilia’s 413 Brewster St. E. Harvey, ND 58341

The TV Mass can be viewed each Sunday on the following stations. 11:00 a.m. on KXND - Minot 10:00 a.m. on KNDX - Bismarck

EWTN – Sundays, 7 am, 11 am, 11 pm Weekdays 7 am, 11 am, 6 pm, 11 pm

The Mass can also be viewed on the internet at any time. https://www.ewtn.com/tv or https://www.wordonfire.org/daily-mass/

The Mass from St. Cecilia’s is also televised on the local access channel at 7:00 pm.

Fr. Kevin - 2nd Sunday of Easter - Cycle A – 2020 Acts of the Apostles 2:42-47; I Peter 1:3-9; John 20:19-31

Today we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. This solemnity, which seems relatively new to us, has its origins all the way back to Jesus.

We just heard the gospel account of what you might call the very first Divine Mercy Sunday. This story is commonly known to us as the doubting Thomas story.

The ancient Jewish feast of Passover began on the 14th day of Nisan (a lunar month which corresponds roughly with the end of March) until the 21st day of Nisan. This was known to the Jewish people as the feast of unleavened bread. In this story the apostles are gathered together on what we would now call Easter Sunday evening. All of them were there, except Thomas. When they were gathered together the following week (the last day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread) Thomas was with them. In his appearance the Lord filled Thomas with all of the graces he needed to dispel his doubts.

In the early Church it soon became the custom to celebrate a full week of Easter. This was a natural outgrowth of the Jewish observance of Passover. During this time Christians would gather together daily for “the breaking of the bread.” The newly baptized would also wear their white baptismal garment to show that they had become newly enlightened by Christ. It is important to note then, that we did not just make these things up. These things were commanded by God to Moses (Leviticus 34:18) At the end of these seven days God poured out the fullness of His mercy to the people of Israel. Likewise at the end of these eight days of Easter God pours out the fullness of His divine mercy.

Through the centuries we have continued to celebrate the Octave (eight days) for the major Solemnities (the octave of Christmas; the octave of Easter). However, the recognition of the final day being a special day of grace and mercy diminished over time. But God had a plan to one day bring back the message of his mercy.

In the 13th century the Lord appeared to a German nun by the name of Gertrude (1256-1302) On December 27th, the Feast of St John the Evangelist, Sister Gertrude had a mystical vision in which she was at the Last Supper in the place that John held. She saw herself laying her head on the chest of Jesus, just like St. John did. In this she heard a beautiful message of God’s love and mercy which John had not written in his gospel. She was told that this revelation had been reserved for subsequent ages when the world, having grown cold, would have need of the vision to rekindle its love.

During this time the heresy of Jansenism began to spread all over Europe. Jansenism taught that you had to be in a perfect state of grace before receiving the Lord in Communion. The rigorous implementation of this teaching resulted in the practice that people stopped receiving our Lord in Communion. This was a rejection of the grace and mercy that our Lord desired to give to people through communion.

Continued on page 5

You are touching hearts and bringing huge smiles to others! Please continue to use your creativity,

however simple you think it may be, it is lifting others in a time of isolation and uncertainty.

From a parishioner: "For me to receive handcrafted Easter cards made by children from our parish was such a lift of

Easter Joy for me! This really lifted my spirits." Thank You!

Create A Card! All children & teens are invited and encouraged to create an Easter card, a drawing, or write a letter to be distributed to the Nursing Home Residents. There are 50 days after the Easter Triduum to Pentecost. A card or a letter is still welcomed during this time. There is a basket in the north entrance for you to leave the cards.

A friend is one who knows you as you are, understands

where you’ve been, accepts who you’ve become—

and still gently invites you to grow. Be a friend.

400 years later St John Eudes (1602-1680) and St Louis de Montfort (1673-1716) established the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The image of the Sacred Heart was also given to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690). In this our Lord spoke the words to her, “Behold the heart that loves so much, but is so little loved.”

All of these experiences prepared the way for the Lord to appear to St Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938) as He gave her the message of Divine Mercy. As our Lord said to Faustina, this message of mercy has been given to us for these last days. In this He is acknowledging that we are in the end times. This does not necessarily mean that the world is coming to an end soon. These end time, for all we know, could last another thousand years.

What we do know is that for the past two centuries there has been a gradual turning away from the Lord. Today millions of young adults are leaving the Christian faith. Today the family is under constant attack as society attempts to redefine the family. Today we are seeing persecutions of Christians in greater number than ever in history.

Add to this the increasing violence against innocent life, the constant onslaught of senseless acts of violence, the movement of socialist and communist forms of government that are threatening our nation, and now this isolation which we are all experiencing from the coronavirus it is no wonder that we may have a bit of fear and anxiety.

Now more than ever we need to turn to the Lord and receive the fullness of His mercy. The devotion to Divine Mercy and the Divine Mercy Chaplet have the profound ability of dispelling all of our fears and anxieties. May the words of Divine Mercy be words that are forever in your heart. In this time of difficulty remember to pray the words, “Jesus, I trust in you.”

Fr. Kevin’s Reflection continued from page 4.
