AFAMILY is left devas-tated and torn apartafter a fire gutted their

Albersville home on Sundaynight.

Parents Patrick Fruin (33)and Shantal Pillay (29) wereasleep with their threechildren aged three, six andnine, when the fire occurred.

Their elder children, aged13 and 11, were not in thehouse.

Since the fire, the familyhave been separated, livingin various places with family,while Pillay recovers inhospital.

“Iwokeupat9.45pmfroma deep sleep after I heardthings fall from the ceiling.When I looked up, I saw theceiling was on fire,” saidFruin.

HethenwokePillayupandasked her to get the childrenout of the house.

“We got out of the houseand luckily the children didnot suffer any burns, butShantal went back into thehouse to get our identitybooks and birth certificates,”he said.

However, shewas severe-ly burnt on her face.

Municipality’s fire depart-ment responded quickly andcontained the fire, but unfor-tunately, nothing could besalvaged.

“We don’t know how thefirestarted. Itwasnotanelec-trical fault— it seems to havestarted in our room near thewindow, which is broken.”

Fruin said if he had notwokenup theywouldhave allbeen burnt to death.

Pillay was taken to PortShepstone Hospital on Sun-day night, treated and re-leased.

“When she woke up onMonday morning, she couldnot open her eyes she had somany blisters from theburns.”

Shewasthentakenbacktohospital and admitted.

“When she was admitted,the staff and managementtook excellent care of her.”

Fruis said that donationsofanykindwillbewelcomeashe and his family have noth-ing.

Sunday.“The buck came leaping out

fromthesideandendedupinfrontof the vehicle. It was struck withsuch force that the vehicle’s air-bags deployed,” said Netcare 911spokesperson Chris Botha.

Netcare 911 paramedics foundthat the buck had died on impact.

“Miraculously the occupants ofthe vehicle escaped injury, buttheir vehicle was seriously dam-aged,” said Botha.

Netcare 911paramedics, SAPSSearchandRescueandotherserv-ices responded toanaccident inStFaiths near Port Shepstone onSunday night.

They found that a car had leftthe road and came to a standstilldown an embankment,” said Net-care 911 spokesperson SantiSteinmann.

A man, in critical condition,was rushed to hospital after re-ceiving treatment on scene.

SOME owners of “R699” carson the South Coast are claim-ing to have fallen prey to the

Satinksy finance “scam” whichmight see banks repossess theircars.

The Satinksy Group, which of-fered 17 000 motorists nationwidea chance to ownanewvehicle fromas little as R699 per month, an-nounced last week that it will bewithdrawing advertising fees paidto its customers.

Owners received a rebate for thenumber of kilometres they drovepermonth,whichwent towardstheinstalment.

Sheroma Bansee of Margate,who purchased a Renault fromSatinksy, said she was disappoint-ed to hear that this has turned outto be a scam.

“It was a good deal and workedperfectly formeas Idida lot of trav-elling. I’m now going to trade mycar in and get something cheaper.”

DarrenNaidoo,whohas paid 23instalments on his Renault, said heplans on removing the signage.

“I noticed a drop inmy rebate inJune and at the beginning of July, Ireceived nothing. It’s very disap-pointing,” he said. Sunaina Depalalof Port Shepstone, also an owner ofa Renault, said many underprivi-leged people saw this as an oppor-tunity to own a problem-free vehi-cle, but now they are probably go-ing to lose their vehicles.

The Fever’s sister publication,TheWitness, quoted Cas Coovadia,managing director of the SouthAf-rican Banking Association, whosaid owners need to approach theirbanks to see if they can rescheduletheir debt.

“Car owners who are unable topay their vehicle finance loansneeded to act before thingsbecomeworse and reach a point wherebanks are forced to repossess thevehicles,” said Coovadia.

Typically, each bank will assessthe loan agreement of each individ-ual financed, he said.

A HIBISCUS Private Hospitalpatient has opened a case againsta nurse she alleges assaulted herwhile she was in hospital.

Duduzile Shwebede fromMur-chison says she was admitted inJune with swelling around awound on her right leg.

“My doctor left a report indi-cating that the wound should notbe bandaged as it needed to dryout.”

She alleged that at 9.30am, af-ter her doctor left, a nurse came

to bandage her wound.“I remindedher that the doctor

said the wound must not be cov-ered, but she shouted atme, ‘Shutup. I am the nurse. You are a pa-tient. Stop telling me nonsense’.

The name of the nurse isknown to the Fever.

“She continued to bandage thewound, at the same time hurlingobscenities at me.”

Shwebede said the nurse thenpushed her sharply on her fore-head, causing her to fall.

“I phoned my doctor to reportthat the nurse had assaultedme.”

Shwebede asked her doctor totransfer her to another privatehospital in Margate, but he saidher health condition requiredequipment which Hibiscus Hos-pital had.

“I feared formy life so I phonedthe police because the nursethreatened me saying that no oneelse would attend to me and thatshewould be the onetoinjectme.”

The police said they could notopen a case, but advised her to“sort thematter out”withhospitalmanagement.

After getting discharged lastweek, she opened a case of as-

sault and is suing the hospital andthe nurse.

SAPS spokesperson Colonel-Lieutenant Zandra Wiid con-firmed that a case of common as-saultwasopened. “Thecase is stillunder investigation. No one hasbeen charged,” she said.

Hibiscus Private Hospitalexecutive managing director Ri-chard Mills would not confirm ordeny the incident, saying that bylaw “all information concerning auser, including information relat-ing to his or her health status,treatment or stay in a health es-tablishment is confidential”.

Hibiscus Private Hospital nurse accused of patient abuse

A FEMALE police officer is facing a chargeof failing to safeguard a firearm after herweapon was used in a murder.

It is alleged that the officer left herfirearm in her boyfriend’s vehicle, whoproceeded to Scottburgh with it.

A group of people were in a hotel carpark in Scottburgh on June 28 when aman allegedly interfered with them.

“He then walked to his car and cameback to the group, armed with a hand gunand shot one man in the group. He died onhis way to hospital,” said police spokes-person Lieutenant-Colonel wiid.

It was established that the car be-longed to a police constable in Umzim-khulu.

Members from the Port Shepstonecluster task team contacted the officerand made arrangements to meet her.

“After investigation it was found thatthe policewoman allegedly left her fire-arm in the car and her boyfriend allegedlytook the car,” said Wiid.

He then brought the car and firearmback, but she was never informed of whathappened. Captain Gert Bosman, CaptainZenele Khumalo, Warrant Officer YugenMoodley and Constable Possy Pillay laterarrested Mfanafuthi Shozi (32).

He was charged with murder.

Sanco regional secretaryDuduzile Magatyeni-Msomi saidthey heard that the directors ofBargainWholesalerswereobject-ing to the planned shopping mallwhich will boost local economyand create jobs in the poverty-stricken town.

According to her the allegedreasonthistookplacewasbecauseit could result in Bargain Whole-salers losing customers.

“We say they have no right toblockdevelopment thatwill createjobs for residents. It is good forour

As projected by the municipality,the six-week multimillion rand pipe-line replacement programme whichfocused on troublesome areas ofRamsgate and Marburg replaced3400metres of agedpipelines for im-proved water supply was completed

by end of June 2014.During the execution of this pro-

gramme, communities experiencedfrequentwater interruptions due to aseries of shutdowns and tie-ins.

“Marburg had supply interrup-tionsforthepastweekduetotheshut-down and tie-ins on Valley Road,CrescentDriveand themainHardingroad.

“These shutdowns were expectedas they were carried out as the pipes

were laid,” said Ugu spokespersonSipho Khuzwayo.

Headdedthattheaffectedcommu-nitieswerenotified of these interrup-tions by the Customer Care RelationsUnit throughSMSs, call centreagentsand updates on the water servicesFacebook page.

“Themunicipalitysincerelyapolo-gises for any inconvenience that wascaused during this upgrade project,”he said.

The municipality will announceofficially the handover dates of theproject to the residents.

THEHibiscusCoastMunicipalityhascommit-ted to buy more land for housing develop-ments.

Municipal manager Max Mbili told themedia recently that at the end of 2012, HCMadvertised a tender for registered owners ofsuitably located land, the purpose of whichwas for human settlement projects.

“This public invitation yielded two re-sponses from thePropertyDescriptionExtentSubdivision8 (of 4) of a farm inLouisiana,No.3239whichis88,35haandfromPortion15(of7) of farm No.7108 25 at 1795ha. Both landowners had proposed a township layoutdrawnbytheirappointedtownplannerwhichindicated theenvisagednumberof residentialandnon-residentialsitesplannedandthepro-posed level of infrastructure services,” saidMbili.

CouncilspeakerRonnieNairsaidHCMcon-tinues to receive land from willing sellers forthe purpose of building houses.

“These lands vary in their status of statuto-ryplanningandarebeinghandleddifferently.The municipality is formalising its relation-ship with the National Housing DevelopmentAgent, a statutory body established to act asthe state’s land bank,” he said.

Nair added they want integrated humansettlements where people will have houseswithwater, electricityandsanitationservices.

“This explains why in most cases theseprojects take longer toplan,designand imple-ment.Feasibilitystudiescover,butarenotlim-ited to, land audit, geotechnical assessment,environmental scoping,availabilityofbulk in-frastructure and socio-economic studies be-fore conclusion of the sales agreement,” hesaid.

He said in some cases, the infrastructuremaynotexist, but theproject sizeand locationput it as a prime catalyst for such infrastruc-ture development.

“Normally, the district municipality is re-sponsibleforthebulkinfrastructure,whilethelocal municipality takes responsibility for theinternal reticulation network of such infra-structural services. HCM, as an accreditedmunicipality in termsofHousingAct, remainsresponsible to facilitate, plan anddesign suchintegrated, sustainable and affordable infra-structural development and themaintenancethereof,” said Nair.

THE Hibiscus Coast municipalmanager Max Mbili has warnedserviceproviders,whomheclaimsabuse thesupply-chainprocessbyeither canvassing the municipalofficials and councillors or by col-luding.

He said drastic measures willbe taken against them.

“We sternly warn them thatdrastic measures will be taken bythe municipality as per theprovisionsofSection38oftheSup-ply Chain Management policy.

“Hibiscus Coast Municipalitynoteswithgreatconcernthatthereare service providers who areabusing thesupplychainmanage-ment systems and they are cur-rently being investigated.

“Service providers should re-

KZN departments urged to spendconditional grants fullyTHOBANI NGQULUNGA

KWAZULU-NATAL provincial departmentswereyesterdayurged tospend their condition-al grants fully because failure to do so resultsin the province forfeiting the money back toNational Treasury.

Thiswasthesternwarning fromtheprovin-cial head of Treasury, Simiso Magagula as hisdepartment presented the 2014/15 medium-termexpenditureframework(MTEF)budgettothe finance portfolio committee at the legisla-ture yesterday.

The report indicates that KZN underspenton conditional grants by R67,444 million atyear-end.

Magagulasaid theprovincecouldnotaffordto lose thegrantsbecausethatwould impactonservicedelivery.Hestressed thispointbecauseafterthe2011census,KZNexperiencedbudgetcuts fromNational Treasury due to a decline inpopulation figures here, with moremoney go-ing to Gauteng and the Western Cape.

KZN DA leader Sizwe Mchunu asked if theunderspending from various departmentscould have been as a result of austerity meas-uresputinplacebyTreasurywhenthe2013/14budget was planned. Magagula denied this.

He insisted that departments should notoverspend but have been instructed to spendtheir budgets fully.

Meanwhile, MEC for Finance Belinda Scottsaid shehad requested that shebe fully briefedby all departments on the forensic investiga-tions that had not been resolved and theirprogress.

“We want to prosecute on some of the an-cient forensic investigations in which we losthundreds of millions of rand,” she said.

She added that she had approached KZNJudge President Chiman Patel to make courtsavailable to prosecute those who are implicat-ed in the forensic investigations.

‘Selso seal’ hauls out on Marion Island

IN June2013, a youngSouthernElephant Seal(Miroungaleonina)washedupat Southbroom,exhausted and starving.

Itwasclearthatheneededhelpandwastak-en to the uShaka SeaWorld rehabilitation cen-tre where he was named Selso.

Southern Elephant Seals normally inhabittheSouthernOceanwiththeclosestislandcolo-ny site beingMarion Island2 200 kms southofSouth Africa and therefore it was unusual forthe young seal to strand on the KZN coast.

When Selso arrived he weighed 73kg, less

thanhalf ofwhat he shouldhaveweighed, andneeded to put on 110kg before he could be re-leased.

This took seven months and on 9 JanuarySelso boarded the MSC Sinfonia cruise linerandwasreleasedjustbeforesunseton11Janu-ary, 25 nautical miles due south of Port Eliza-beth.

Prior to leaving the rehabilitation centre hewas fitted with a satellite tracking tag whichwouldrecordhismovementsforuptooneyear.

It tooknomore than twodaysoncereleasedfor Selso to get his bearings and head in theright direction. His epic journey took himsteadilysouthwardscoveringadistanceofover8 000 kms in less than six months. Selso, likeall Southern Elephant Seals spend their livesat sea except when breeding and moulting.His southwardjourneyincludedspendingtimein areas known tobe good feeding grounds. ByJunehealmost reached the Antarctic ice shelf,but did not remain there long before turningaround and heading northwards.

He continued his northward journey andon 30 June hauled out on Marion Island. Hissatellite transmitter indicated his location onthe south side of the island and research staffweresent toaccesshiscondition.Hewasfoundto be in excellent condition enjoying a well de-served rest among the boulders.

something to help those less fortu-nate onMandelaDay, has grown intoa project that will see many peoplearound the South Coast benefit.

SMG customer relations managerCarisa van Vuuren said they havebeenamazedbythenumberof stake-holders who have decided to partnerwith the dealership to continue thelegacy of Nelson Mandela.

"We initially spoke of collecting 67blankets to be donated to the needy,but word of what we were planningspread and a lot of organisations goton board," said Van Vuuren.

Some of those who contributed tothe idea are the Ugu District Munici-pality, theHibiscus CoastMunicipali-ty, Esayidi FET College, the Road Ac-cident Fund, the Sanco Development

Institute and others.General sales manager Darren

Staats said needy 67 families inMasinenge and Gamalakhe havebeen identified through SukumaSakheand those families will receivefood parcels and blankets on 18 July.

Representing the Sanco Develop-ment Institute, Sthembiso Cele, alsothe Ugu Municipality speaker saidhis organisation is delightedwith thepartnership as they have been "call-ing for it since 2009".

He said Sanco will celebrateMandela Day by embarking on aproject with the Road Accident Fundand HCM to fix potholes within themunicipality.

HCM spokesperson SimonSoboyisa said on 18 July they will bespearheading an operation to cleanPort Shepstone.

"This will not only happen onMandela Day, but will be an ongoingeffort," he said.

Major breaks inspecial operationTHE Port Shepstone SAPS cluster com-mander Major-General Thembi Ndlovutook the lead in a special crime preven-tion operation on Thursday in the Ixopoarea.

She was in command of police mem-bers from Port Shepstone cluster, SAPSIxopo, Umzimkhulu, Highflats, Umzinto,Port Shepstone Tactical Response Team,theK9Unit and theVehicle IdentificationSection, IxopoRoadTraffic Inspectorate,Ubuhlebezwe Protection Services andDepartment of Home Affairs, who wereall part of the operation.

The operation yielded a number ofsuccesses.

A stolen vehicle was recovered aftera chase by police and was abandonedby the culprits. When police found theabandoned Toyota Corolla which wasreported as stolen from Phoenix earlierthis month, they were surprised to findunusual passengers, in the form of 12goats, in the vehicle.

It is suspected that the animals werepartof stock theft in that area. Investiga-tions are continuing.

Seven people were arrested for pos-session of dagga and a total of 965gramswereconfiscated.One personwascharged for possession of a dangerousweapon and one knife was confiscated.

Two suspects were arrested for deal-ingin liquor and47casesofbeer,96litresof Ijuba and 25, 750 ml bottles of beerwere recovered. Thirty eight peoplewere also arrested under the Immigra-tion Act for having no documentation.— Supplied.

THE Port Shepstone SAPS have warnedresidents to be vigilant as a high number ofhouse break-ins, theft of motor vehicle andtheft out of motor vehicle cases have beenreported in the Southport and Hibberdeneareas this month.

Police have alsowarned that firearm own-ers should only use their weapons whenthere is real danger.

Ndumiso Shude (36) woke up suddenlywhen he heard a noise in his Sea Park homerecently.

He looked outside and saw someone flee.He then fired two shots,wounding the per-

petrator - Ernest Memela (62) - in the leg.“It is allegedthathe forced openthegarage

door and empty bottles were taken from thegarage,”saidpolicespokespersonLieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

Memela was charged for housebreakingandappearedinPortShepstonecourtandwasreleased on R1000 bail. The case was re-manded to 28 July.

He then, however, opened an attemptedmurder case against the Shude in the case.

Shude was charged with attempted mur-der and will appear in court again on 28 July.

He was also charged with possession of afirearm without a licence. Investigations es-tablished that the firearm belonged to a latefamilymember,which he allegedly keptwith-out having a licence. The casewas postponedto 1 August.

Shude is also out on bail.“We warn the community to be extremely

cautious when using firearms. A firearmshouldonlybeusedwhenthepersonorsome-oneelse’s life is inimminentdanger,”shesaid.

She said that it is also illegal to fire shots ina residential area where there is no immedi-ate threat to someone’s life.

“Innocent peoplemaybewounded or evenget killed. Investigations into all these casesare being conducted,” she said.

The recent Expedition Africa 500at Port Edward is a clear indicatorthat if we have the trails’ infrastruc-

ture, there should bemore consumersupport for our areas, longer stay-over periods and the added benefit ofvisitor spend flows into our ruralareas.

Our inland river and valley land-scapes are ideal for such trails.

Bycreatinganewsetofactivityop-portunitiesforourvisitors,webelievethat additional events will accrue tothe Greater South Coast and, in sodoing, contribute to the sustainingand growth of the tourism sector.

“You’ve just won eleventybillion dollars in a lottery thatyou never entered” is anothercommon one. Lastly, mediahas reportedmany a time of aman who knocks on the doorand smiles sweetly before of-fering tocheckyourelectricitymeter.

Once in your home, ofcourse, he robs you blind.

Many respondents to thiscolumn accuse me of beingoverly cynical. Before youlambastme for beinguntrust-ing and an over-zealous scep-tic, talk to someone who hasboughtacarwith the“help”ofSatinsky, or tried to loseweight with pills containingherbs and minerals from theAmazon rainforest.

LAST week my colleague StephMcLennan’s column talkedabout hypertension and all the

things going on around us that

make us South Africans a hyperten-sion prone lot, from corruption tocrime, you name it.

I read that column after about atwo-week non-stop barrage of statis-tics about South Africans on a lot ofthings, from how hopeless ourchildren are in mathematics to howmany times an average South Afri-can man gets lucky a year.

I think most of these “statistics”are just for entertainment purposes.Knowing how many times a year aguy in Guatemala rolls in the haydoesn’t really count as a life-chang-ing revelation that would make mesmarter.

But knowing the number of SouthAfricans who have diabetes can helpsteer me towards a better andhealthier lifestyle.

According to theWorldHealth Or-ganisation, there has been a sharpincrease inthenumberofpeoplewithdiabetes in the country within the

past 15 years, with the Indian popu-lation said to be the hardest hit.

Around 13%of South African In-dians are estimated to be diabetic,followed by coloureds, Africans andwhitesat10%,eightandfourpercentrespectively.

Thenext statistic that should haveeveryone worried is that we holdthe title for being the third fattest na-tion in the world. For some it may behard to believe, but results releasedby medical journal Lancet last weekconfirm that about 70% of womenand 40% of men in this country areoverweight.

What’s even more worrying isthat the same study reveals thateven the children are not faring anybetter.Onein four young girls is over-weight; that’s a quarter of girls of allraces in the country. I’m glad that aspart of my annual check-up, my doc-torhasfoundnothingwrongwithme.Before that I was worried that I may

be onmyway to developing diabetesafter gaining a few kilograms everylong weekend since June last year.

The only warning I received wasthat I should take it easyon theGuin-ness as it is not good for mywaist-line.

The scariest study for me was theone which suggests that around athird of South Africans suffer from amental disorder of some kind. That’sa whopping 33% of people in ourcommunities.

What’s concerning about this isthat a great majority of these peopledon’t even know theyhave the illnessthey are carrying with them.

As we know, there are countlessmental disorders and some aremoreserious than others. You and I couldbewalking aroundwith amental dis-orderwithout knowing it until some-thing triggers an epic meltdown oneday.

Depression, dementia, schizo-phrenia and bipolar are some of thewell known and commonly men-tioned disorders, but I wonder howmany people are aware that someresearchers have suggested thatracism can also be classified as amental illness. In a book publishedin 2012— The Oxford Handbook ofPersonality Disorders, a connectionis made between pathological bias

(racism) and being mentally unsta-ble. I personally believe racists haveavery lowself-esteem.Theyalsoholdsucha lowopinionof themselves thatthey start abusing people of otherraces just to feel better about them-selves.

Racism inSouthAfrica also seemsto have found a new home on socialmedia,wherepeoplewhoseemquiteopen minded about race relations inthis country in their normal day-to-day lives assume faceless suprema-cist personas online

On the other hand, a society likeours is bound to produce such a highnumber of people with mentaldisorders. The high levels of crimeare creating a very paranoid society.Other factors like a lack of jobs, cor-ruption and affirmative action allinstil a victim mentality in a lot ofpeople.

We might be predisposed to get-ting all these horrible conditions, butI don’t think anything beats keepinga positive outlook. As we know, eve-rything starts in your mind, fromswitching to a healthier lifestyle todeciding not to be no so grumpy.

I’m going to follow my doctor’sorders for now, while winter lasts,but I’m not sure if can stay awayfrommy favourite Irish ale in the hotKZN summer.

Jazz fest detractionsI WANT to express my experience with regard to theJazz Festival. It was advertised that the park andride would leave from St Martin de Porres.

Working on a tight schedule, we took our chil-dren and staff to St Martin de Porres to connectwith the park and ride only to be told there thatthe transport to the festival was not leaving fromSt Martin de Porres as it had not allowed itspremises to be used.

There were no signs to this effect, other thanthose indicating that it was a park and ride.

We had to dash to the Marburg sports groundto drop everyone off and then fight our waythrough the roadworks to get to a vital appoint-ment. We were very late.

Our children phoned us later to say they neededchairs. We said that they must come out to meetus to collect the chairs. However, once in the venue,they were not allowed out. We were told that for acar to go in, just to drop off chairs, would cost R100.

Our children said the security was poor and thatnot all the artists who were supposed to performactually arrived. All that said, the jazz festival wasenjoyed, but the above inconveniences detractedfrom the overall experience.

but I was drawn to the headline “My sonneeds help”.Iread themother’s letterandmyheartwent

out to her son. However, my anger rose to-wards the teachers to whom this child hasbeen entrusted and towards Dr Nash for call-ing the child a “terror” on two occasions (evenif it was said tongue in cheek).

Our son had similar problems from thetime he started school, but not as extreme asMrs M.K.’s son. I will not go into the years ofstress, heartache, and trouble thatwehad.Wetook our son for assessments, evaluations andIQ tests and were constantly told that our sonwas years below where he should have beenscholastically in the majority of his subjects.

Wedid everythingwe could for our child —we tookhim toKipMcGrathandMasterMathsfor extra lessons, but he continued to struggleandmostyearshewascondonedduetohisage.

Hewas in theLSENclass at school, suppos-edly under specially qualified teachers, whomwe firmly believe did more harm than good.

We took him to a counselling psychologistwhoadvertises that she specialises inworkingwithchildrenwitheducationalproblems.Aftera consultation costing an exorbitant amount,shetoldusthesameastheclinicalpsychologistby whom we had him assessed a number oftimes over the years.

Onaholidayanumberofyearsago,wewerehaving lunch with a couple whomwe had justmet and after our son got up and excusedhim-

self from lunch — after he had beenwith thiscouple for less than 30 minutes — this man,a layman, turned to us and said: “You knowthat your son has ADHD (attention deficit hy-peractivity disorder), don’t you?”

We told him that our son definitely did nothaveADHDaswehadhad him assessedsever-al times over many years by top professionalswho had never diagnosed ADHD.

Hesuggestedthat whenwereturnhomewetake him to a doctor specialising in ADHDwhich we did and our beloved son was diag-nosed with ADHD.

Sadly by this time he was in his mid-teenshe had had a life time of educational problemsthat had led to somany other problemswhichincluded low self-esteem.

We never thought that our son would passGrade 10 and now he is on his way to gettinghismatric, all due toa total stranger.All the so-called professional teachers, principals, clini-cal psychologist and counselling psychologistcould not pick up something that I believe,would and should be something that someonein their position should be trained to look for.

I hope and pray that somehow Mrs. M.K.sees this letter and I would urge her to pleasehave her son assessed for ADHD— itmight hethemakingofhimasithasbeenformypreciousson, so that people are not tempted to call achild with a problem a “terror”.

It is this very labelling that causes a child toreact the way they do.

ENRAGED MOTHER

Pensioner’s ‘blacksnow’ peeveWE are so tired of the constant sugar-caneburning fall-out that litters our entire prop-erty.

We have a large property with cars in theopen and we conservatively estimate that itcostsusaminimumofR350 per weektocleanthe sugar-cane fallout.

That is an enormous R1400 per monthjust to clean up someone else’s mess that isnot of our making.

Iwonderwhat the jointcost is toall thepeo-ple in the area who have to employ people toclean the highly invasive debris?

I understand that burning reduces pro-duction costs, however, has cognisance beentaken of the cost to others who are inconven-ienced in this way?

The farmer gains and hundreds, if notthousands, of us pay the penalty.

Our bed linen is white, as is our loungesuite, dining-room chairs and the majority ofour curtains.

One cannot stop the fall-out from invadingevery room in the house, which is causinglong-term damage to our furniture.

Why should we be inconvenienced in thisway every time the sugar cane is burnt? Ourwashing is coveredwith the fall-out every dayand time and again, we have to redo ourwashing.

I wonder how many of the 1 200 houseownersinTweni are affectedbythisunaccept-able situation? Ibelieve theaccumulativecostto all effected in this manner may outweighthe saving in production costs to the farmer.

This contributes to high air pollution on agrand scale.

I have tried to find out what the protocol iswith regard to the burning, but no one at thecouncil has been able to inform me.

In 2003 the International Farm Manage-ment Congress advised that the South Afri-can sugar industry burns 90% of the crop atharvest while10%is harvestedgreenandthatthe trendhas increasedover thepast 20yearsdespite growing pressure from the public.

I feel that environmental legislation shouldprohibit this and cane burning should bebanned on farms adjacent to residential andtourist areas.

As pensioners, we can ill afford to spendR1 400 cleaning someone else’s mess whilethey benefit from the reduced productioncosts.

It was absolutely awful to witnessthe “take over” of a residential area forsuch an event and totally unaccepta-ble. This in spite of the fact that we asresidents were guaranteed a well con-trolled - all alcohol barred - event.

Other disturbing facts: the noiselevel was too high; litter and empty al-

cohol bottles left in the road is unac-ceptable; people drinking and driving;illegalparkingonprivateproperty; inde-cent behavior. (We found condoms onour pavement); urinating on the pave-ment in full view of passersby; thestench of urine was unbearable on thebeach on Monday morning.

We had to contact Protection Serv-ices to remove vehicles parked on ourproperty illegally (a “Thank you” to

them for responding straight away)and blocked our guests to enter andpark.

A family that was due to check inwere so upset with what they wit-nessedthattheydidnot stay butdecid-ed to rather sleep over in Durban be-fore returning home. They said theywould NEVER return to the SouthCoast.

You do not need a very vivid imagi-nation to know the stories that they willtell their friends, as they say: “nothingworks better than word of mouth ad-

vertising.” It is bad enough to allowthis to happen within the boundaries ofa residential area, but to make mattersworse to coincide with the start of theschool holidays? When will the powersthat be realize that the South Coast’ssole income comes from tourists? Whyon earth would anyone still find theSouth Coast attractive when potholes,crime and general neglect is evidenteverywhere - just look at the toilet situ-ation at St Mikes Beach - and to top itof to witness these events at St Mikesbeach over and over again? I can not

All the guests that we had who attend-ed the actual Jazz Festival on Saturday left on Sundaymorning. The crowd that was attracted on Sundaywas very obviously from the local community.

“We also have a publishing di-vision and have published 55books. We formed Moonlight andwe are about to get a sponsor. Wewill soon release our first CD.”

Hesaid thatmuchof theirworkis displayed at the Durban ICCwhen it has exhibitions. This, hesays, is possible because they getsponsorship from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts andCul-ture and the eThekwini Munici-pality.

“We also run a computer labo-ratory for our rural communityand teach pupils computer skillsafter school. Shange however,said they have challenges whichthey have to address.

THE Port Shepstone Department of CorrectionalServices officers paid surprise visits to home-basedPort Shepstone offenders on Wednesday.

Their spokesperson Mncedisi Nomdlange saidthe visit was part of their routine to check onprisoners’ compliance with conditions of servingtheir sentence at home.

“We visited them and found most of them athome,” said Nomdlange.

He said there were only two prisoners whowere not home, saying they had requested, in ad-vance, to be allowed out for special purposes.

“They were absent as per their request, butothers were all at home. This showed that prisonerswho live in their residences in Port Shepstone arecomplying with the conditions of their sentence,”said Nomdlange.

He added that this programme of conductingsurprise visits will continue in rural areas in thenear future.

How to evict a tenantIf you are a private person collecting rent in South Africa, you

will find occasionally that you do not get paid and you need toevict a tenant.You can, at this stage, go and consult a lawyer, who will issue

a demand, but that legal system is fatally flawed by delay andabsurd costs.

To evict the tenant, you sue the tenant in the small claimscourt for the first R12 000 of the unpaid rent (You have a lease

agreement, remember?). This takes a few weeks, but it’s faster thanthe regular court, which takes years.

Once you have a judgement for the money, you present it tothe sheriff of the court for collection.

At this point, if the renter is not able to pay the first R12 000 oftheir rent, they will disappear like mist before the rising sun.

Failing that, the sheriff will collect cash and household goodsto make up a resale value of R12 000.

While the tenant retains rights of occupationunder various laws, irrespective of the lease, beingregularly deprived of consumer goods can spoil hiswhole month.

If this approach happens to fail for some reason,there are many dedicated workmen looking fordecent accommodation who would be glad tooccupy the rooms you rent out to them in parallelwith the people that have broken their leaseagreement and yet inexplicably failed to leave.

Sure, they can continue to live there, but theycan’t expect the arrangement to be exclusivewithout a lease agreement in place.

Ingredients>> 90ml olive oil>> salt and coarsely ground blackpepper>> 2 large whole fish, such as redroman or stumpnose>> 30ml extra olive oil>>1wholegarlicbulb, separated intocloves>> 300g cherry tomatoes, rinsed>> 1 sprig fresh dill, fennel or basil>> lemon quarters

MethodPreheat theoven to220 ºC. Season

the olive oil generously with salt andpepper and use to brush the cleanedfish inside and out.

Pour the other quantity of olive oilinto an oven pan, add the garlic andbake for 5 minutes.

Remove from the oven and placethe fish on top of the garlic in the pan.Roast for 10 minutes, then add thecherry tomatoes and roast for anoth-

er 30 to 40minutes or until the fish isjust done.

Arrange the fishona largeservingplatter and surroundwith the roast-ed garlic cloves and cherry tomatoes.

Finish with fresh sprigs of herbsand lemon quarters.

Serve with freshly baked Italianbread spread with garlic pastesqueezed from the roasted garliccloves. Don’ forget to add the love ofyour family.

FORD Motor Company of Southern Africa(FMCSA) will give a glimpse of its vision fora new Ford Figo concept later this month.

Highlighting premium design alongwith smart and safety features, the con-cept vehicle provides an indication of thedesign language to be used in a future ver-sion of the popular Figo. It is confirmedthat a production version of the Figo Con-cept is planned for the South African mar-ket, but details and specifications have yetto be confirmed.

The launch of a phone hotline to report carsparked illegally in bays allocated for disabledpeople has highlighted further issues regard-

ing such bays.Parking identity discs for the disabled are

regulated by each municipality; rules and penaltiesvary from town to town.

There is no universal windscreen disc; a personwith a disc issued in, say, Margate, will not be ableto use that disc in Durban.

Therina Wentzel, national director of the Nation-al Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities inSouth Africa explained:

“Five years ago the council consulted each of thenine provinces about parking discs. The objectivewas to get the national transport department toimplement uniformity.”

Wentzel also outlined some of the questionsbrought by the council:

• Who qualifies for a disc?• What concessions comes with the disc, for ex-

ample, can a disc-holder only park on a demarcatedbay or a loading zone and for how long?

• Will bays be policed?

• Are there penalties and are they legal?• Are recommendations for the disc made by an

expert panel or left to an individual in the trafficdepartment?

Draft paperA draft paper was discussed and sent to the De-

partment of Women, Children and Persons withDisabilities as well as the national transportdepartment.

A date has been set for mid-July 2014 for ameeting with the council and the transport depart-ment to discuss recommendations made by thecouncil and partners such as the QuadParaAssociation of South Africa and the NationalAssociation for Persons with Cerebral Palsy.

Wentzel said: “We are extremely concernedthat many disabled people cannot park in a specialbay and that there is lack of clarity about whoqualifies to use bays.

“We hope the meeting with transport depart-ment will allow be an open conversation to getcloser to a resolution.”

Good turnout for BurryStander Sardine Classic

THE Burry Stander SardineClassic 2014 held over theweekend kicked off on Satur-

day with the 10km and 20km trailrun.

The 110 runners, whichwas dou-ble last year's attendance, begantheir race fromthePortEdwardHoli-day Resort at 7:30am.

There was a strong field of con-tenders, from members of the SouthCoast Strider Athletics Club to otherindividuals travelling from otherprovinces, to better their positionsfrom the year before.

On Sunday, just over 500 moun-tain bikers set off from the Port Ed-ward Holiday Resort's grounds.

The start/finish arena was facili-tated by the three main local bikeshops.

Therewasaselectionof foodstallsand a kid's entertainment to keep allagesbusyand lookedafter.The40kmClassicstartedat8amfollowedby the20km and 10km races.

Oneof theevent'sorganisers,Nat-alie Abbott, said reports from thecompetitors confirmed that thenight's rain had settled the coursenicely and that it was well marked.

"Nonetheless there were a num-ber of non-fatal, but serious injuriesthat were promptly attended to byMedivac and NSRI teams. Most com-petitors finished their races in goodformandwerewelcomedbythePow-erade chariot with a recovery drinkand medals," she said.

JANNIE du Plessis admits watch-ing the Sharks’ season almostimplode is a difficult pill to swal-

low, especially after all thehardworkput in earlier in the campaign.

“We played against the Stormersbefore the [international] break andwe really wanted to capitalise on thehardwork thatwas done on tour, butwemadesomeirrationaldecisionsonthe field and it came back to bite us.

“We were really keen to turn thataround against the Cheetahs. I thinkwe showed a lot of intent and wedidn’t lack any urgency. I can’t thinkofanyonewhodidn’twant towin.But

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazilian policehavearrestedadirector fromtheFifapartner company handling WorldCup ticket packages, accusing him ofleading a network that illegally soldgame passes.

Ray Whelan, a director at MatchHospitality,wasdetainedatRiodeJa-neiro’s luxurious beachfront Copac-abana Palace Hotel on Monday, daysafter 11 people were rounded up in araid to dismantle the network.

Fabio Barucke, the case’s lead in-vestigator,saidWhelanfaceschargesof facilitating the distribution of tick-ets for their illegal sale and criminalconspiracy.

If found guilty, he could face fouryears in prison.

Local media said Whelan is a 64-year-old British citizen. Some 100

tickets were found in his hotel room.Police say the international scalp-

ing syndicate sold thousands of tick-ets worth millions of dollars, goingback to the 2002World Cup in Japanand South Korea.

The scandal is the latest tohit Fifa,which is already battling allegationsthatmembersacceptedbribes fromaQatari football official to secure sup-port for theemirate’s campaign togetthe 2022 World Cup finals.

One of Match Hospitality’s share-holders isSwiss-based InfrontSportsand Media, headed by Philippe Blat-ter, thenephewofFifapresidentSeppBlatter.

AFrench-Algeriansuspect,Moha-madou Lamine Fofana, was initiallythought tobe responsible for the tick-etschemeafterhewasamong11peo-

ple arrested last week in Rio and SaoPaulo. But suspicions moved towardanindividualatMatchHospitality,theofficial World Cup ticket agency,which sells deluxe packages that in-clude private suites at stadiums andgourmet catering.

“Whelan denied negotiating tick-ets with the Franco-Algerian Moha-madou Lamine Fofana during theWorld Cup, but we have proof. Wehave 900 [intercepted] calls betweenthe two during the tournament,”Barucke told reporters.

The investigation is looking intosevenmoresuspects,butBaruckedidnot give more details.

Police sayWhelangaveVIP ticketsto Fofana that were originally forsponsors, non-governmental organi-sationsandrelativesofplayers.Fofa-

na then sold them illegally with thehelp of travel agencies and footballcontacts.

AuthoritiessaidlastweekaFifaof-ficial appeared tohavebeen involvedin the scheme and that the Brazilian,SpanishandArgentinefootballfeder-ations are under investigation.

Fifa spokesperson Delia Fischersaid the organisation “takes note” ofWhelan’s arrest and that it continuesto co-operate with the investigation.

MatchHospitality said earlier thatit had cancelled the tickets bought byFofana’s company, Atlanta Sportif,for the semi-finals and the final.

Thehospitality firmwarned that itwould cancel the remaining tickets ofthree other companieswhose namesappeared in tickets seized by policeunless they co-operate with the

probe. Match identified the compa-nies as Reliance Industries Limited,Jet Set Sports and Pamodzi Sports,butdidnotgivedetailsaboutthecom-panies’ ownership.

Reliance Industries bought 304packages for 19 matches worth$1,2 million (R12,8 million), includ-ing access to a private suite for allgamesinRio,SaoPauloandBeloHor-izonte.MatchHospitalitysaid59tick-ets seized last week had the compa-ny’s name on them.

One ticket was imprinted with thename Jet Set Sports, which pur-chased 40 packages for two gamesworth $108 250.

Thepackagehadbeenallocated toan individualwho resides in Austral-ia, Match Hospitality said, withoutnaming the person.
