He sat, shirtless, on his porch. Two weeks hadpassedsinceCrouse—oneofKZN’smostseniordetec-tives — had been summarily demoted from the Hawksand ordered to report to a minor police station on theSouth Coast.

He surprised his wife Justine Larraman by saying“no” when she offered to leave cigarettes with himon the porch while she and his three step-childrenwent to the mall.

He and Larraman had slept in different rooms forthepastmonth,Crouseusinghisstep-daughterKala’sroom while she lodged with her mom.

Crouse walked to this room and found that Kalahad removed her pink butterfly lamp and replaced itwith a straw lampshade, assuming her huge, formerrugby player step-dad would prefer the more mascu-line decoration. But Crouse sent a WhatsApp messageat 3.16 pm — his last message — to Larraman, issuingan over-the-top complaint that the butterfly lampwas gone.

He was already broken. He found the biblical psalm he had chosen for that

moment, highlighted the passage, and used a red rib-bon bookmark to make sure others would notice. Hehad been reading from Psalm 69, which says: “ Theythat hate me without a cause are more than the hairsof mine head: they that would destroy me aremighty.”

A month ago, Crouse confessed to Larraman thathe had tried to asphyxiate himself in their car, parkedat a truck stop in Port Shepstone.

“But he said the fumes gave him a headache,” shesaid. “He said he’d also thought about hanging him-self, but joked that he might snap the rope.”

This time, he put his reading glasses on Munro’spicture, walked to the old servant’s quarters aroundback, tied a slip-knot in a thin nylon rope, and stran-gled himself.

Crouse (47) was facing a trial in April, for the al-

leged murder of a notorious hitman Pat Mvubu.Rightly or wrongly, the detective believed his boss-

es and colleagues were out to get him, and get rid ofhim.

WhatisknownisthatCrousewasneversuspendedafter his arrest in late 2012, as is standard when policeare charged with violent crimes; that he was requiredto show up for work every day in Port Shepstone; andthat he did no police work since his arrest.

Before that arrest, Crouse had reported on fellowdetectives for using police vehicles for fishing trips.

He left no suicide note. Instead, the detective fileda formal, four-page grievance letter to SAPS superiorsearlier this month.

In it Crouse claimed that he had reported miscon-duct against the same two detectives now investigat-ing him on the murder change — and that the entiretrial was part of a frame-up.

He said he was tormented and humiliated dailyat work: “I was being treated as a total outcast … Ihave become the victim of an orchestrated effort to

“This [was] a shameful and spiteful act,” hewrote.

He was never invited to police braais or “span-bous”. Someone forgot to invite him to the unit’s end-of-year function.

He claimed he was not allowed to use police vehi-cles, and forbidden from working cases.

In a final humiliation, Crouse — the man who hadcracked the KZN ATM bombing gang, and nailed seri-al killers — found himself walking to work, as col-leagues gleefully drove past. “I observed [SAPS]members passing me in state vehicles — their fami-lies in those vehicles, never stopping to offer me alift.”

And Crouse was convinced he knew the reasonhe has victimised. It had nothing to do with his mur-der charge. “It was common knowledge that I wassuspected of having provided photographs … ofmembers using state vehicles for fishing expedi-tions.” Two weeks ago Crouse went to the Amanzim-

toti home of Major-General Johan Booysen, formerhead of the Hawks in KZN, to discuss his crisis.

Booysen was Crouse’s commander for years. Theywent to the same church. And they were both facingmurder trials.

Like Crouse’s brother Captain Nico Crouse,Booysen is facing multiple charges of murder andracketeering as part of alleged Cato Manor police hitsquad, which he denies.

Yesterday, Booysen said: “If what Basil alleged istrue, it would be a disgrace. He came to me quite dis-tressed, saying he had been marginalised and trans-ferred out of the Hawks without proper procedure. Iadvised him to take his grievance through the properchannels.

“The[pastor]atourchurchalsospentanhourwithhim. I was deeply shocked about his death, I’ve knownBasil since 1995. As a detective he was a real bulldog,as a person, he was a man not ashamed to cry.”

Booysen said Crouse was “a whistleblower”.“Iexpect that independent investigators will come

down and assess what happened here,” he said.Yesterday, SAPS spokespeople did not respond to

the allegations in Crouse’s letter.Larraman said Crouse had been diagnosed with

post-traumatic stress disorder, and had been “with-drawn” recently. “He felt he’d lost his connection withthe kids; he’d stopped having supper with us — thenthere was that strange message about the lamp,” shesaid. “He was such a proud man; the humiliation hegot every day was like a weapon against him. Basilwas an incredibly sensitive and complex man; verygenerous.”

On Thursday morning Crouse told his wife of adream he’d had about an injured woodpecker thatsuddenly flew off into the trees.

“How prophetic,” she said. “I think he was lookingfor permission from God do this this tragic thing.”

His provincial commander was reportedly toldthat Crouse was “aggressive and wants to bliksempeople in the office”.

But the father of four painted a picture of stun-ning spite within the organised crime unit. He saidhe had prepared a copy of his resignation from theHawks in October, then changed his mind, and neverfiled it. But Crouse said a senior officer mischievouslyfiled a copy of the letter, which froze his medical aidand salary. He said deliveries of medicines to his unitto treat his chronic conditions, including high bloodpressure, were blocked — and that colleagues toldPharmacy Direct that “I no longer worked at thatunit”.

DESPITE blisters and aching feet a 70-year-old man persevered with a sponsoredwalkfromtheBritisheastcoasttothewestcoasttoraisefundsfortheMurchisonCom-munity Centre. Gavin Trevelyan, who livesin the United Kingdom, but spends a fewmonths a year in South Africa, raisedR13 000 for the centre, which falls underthe banner of the Genesis Outreach Pro-gramme, headed by the Norwegian Set-tlers’ Church in Izotsha.

The centre provides extracurricular ac-tivities for community children and teen-agers.Themoneyraisedwillbeusedforthe reading corner, one of facilities the centre

offers. There is also a music room and a

gym. “When I visited the community cen-tre last year, I saw children who are thirstyfor knowledge, but don't have the propertools. I felt I needed to help,” he said.

Trevelyan then asked his family andfriends in South Africa and the UnitedKingdom to sponsor a 320-kilometre walkon the Pennine Way, which is a rugged walkmade up of lots of hills.

“My feet ached and I was tired on somedays, but I persevered because I wanted toassist those at Murchison Community Cen-tre,” he said. When the children heardGavin’s story, there were huge smiles on

their faces. They sang him a song andthanked him for his hearty contribution.

Letitia Matthews, who manages theprogramme, said Genesis was extremelygrateful for the donation which will beused to educate and teach the children.

“Gavin didn’t just give us a donation, hegave us his heart. He walked such a dis-tance to raise money. When he got tired,he didn't give up because he thoughtabout this community who needed his as-sistance all the time. We will always begrateful to him for that,” said Matthews.

A SOURCE from the National FreedomParty (NFP) has alleged that seven Um-zumbe children were “driven into” by

HibiscusCoastMunicipalitypartyproportion-al representative Councillor Portia Luthuliwhen she lost control of her car on8Februaryin Umzumbe.

According to the source the councillor wasrushing to the NFP president Zanele Magwa-za-Msibi’s rally at the KwaMgaye sports fieldin Umzumbe.

“Weknowherwell,shedoesnothaveadriv-er’s licence, so sheengaged thechildren’spar-ents so that no police case was opened as thatwould lead to her arrest because of drivingwithout a licence. Luthuli and her friendsmade sure that the accident was not reportedto the police and that the children were takento hospital in their own cars,” she said.

She said the Luthuli’s registration numberis NPS 73635. “We feel that it was wrong forher to visit families of the victims [in order] tosilencethemsotheywouldnotopenacasewiththe police.

“She wanted to avoid arrest on charges ofnegligentdrivinganddrivingwithouta licencewhich means she wants to continue drivingwithout a licence and continue endangeringthe livesof innocent citizens.Weshouldnotal-low that as NFP leaders,” said the source.

G.J. Crooks Hospital spokesperson Max-well Mbanjwa confirmed that children fromUmzumbe were admitted to the hospital.

“Iwent to thecasualtydepartmentandcon-firm therewerechildrenadmittedon8Febru-ary. The nursing sister in charge said the chil-dren were seen to and were not critically in-jured, but were diagnosed with head injuriesand injuries to upper and lower limbs. Police spokesperson Lieutenant-ColonelZandraWiid said: “I have checked on the sys-tem from 8 to 12 February for both SouthportandHibberdenestationareasandnosuchcasewas reported.”

SMILE AWHILEDear Fever

ATTENTION all ratepayers from StMichael’s to Port Edward. We have justhad an interesting meeting with Raj ofHCM (depot three), brought aboutthrough the recent e-mail sent to HCMregarding the unkept state of our grassverges, overgrown roadside gutters andwalkways.

Apparently the lack of cutting inDecember was due to the heavy rainswe had at the end of November andearlyDecember2013,andallgrasscutt-ting was abandoned in lieu of a generalclean up of storm damage all along ourlower South Coast.

This is what Raj reported. He also said that he is in charge of

monitoring all the grass-cutting teamsfrom St Michael’s to Port Edward andis involved in an ongoing struggle in at-tempting to get 100% co-operationandproductivityfromtheseteams,anddue to his wide area of responsibility itis almost impossible for him to achieve100% success alone.

To this end he has advised that ifany ratepayer in the above-mentionedlocations sees grass-cutting teams orteam members not complying withtheir working times (see right), theyshould contact him immediately andhe will attempt to get to catch them inthe act so that disciplinary action canbe taken against the offenders.

Raj can be contacted at HCM on

083 57 2606.Staff working hours: 7.30am - 4pmTea - 9.30am – 9.45amLunch - 12.30pm – 1pm.There is no afternoon tea break.Please pass this information to all

ratepayers and residents within the ar-ea from St Michael’s to Port Edward, and let us find out through a “mass re-sponse” if HCM is going to improve onthis aspect of service delivery and wantratepayers’ help to do this, or if this isjust another stalling tactic and moreidle promises leading up to the Aprilelections.

Let us all put HCM to the test on thisissue now for all our benefit.

We ratepayer associations are for-

ever hopeful of positive changes on thelower South Coast, but the apathy ofmost ratepayers too often results inmanyofourplansendingupinthetrashbin.

Let 2014 be the year that ourUvongo ratepayers come together inforce and help with this exercise to seeif we can at last get positive change inour verge-cutting maintenance servicedelivery.

Looking forward to a positive reac-tion from this plea,

Patrick McCabe (URRA Excomember)

Dear Fever,THE number of family, friends and

Munster residents who came to thecelebration of Geoff Stuart’s life atKinderstrand on Monday, 17 February istestimony to the strength of our com-munity spirit and the high esteem inwhich Geoff was held.

I thank you personally and in myratepayer-association capacity. Afterthe gathering at Kinderstrand I wasprivileged to join the family as westrewed Geoff’s ashes in the waves atthe spot on the beach where he swamevery day for many years.

I take this opportunity of congratu-

lating Brigadier Moodley, the officercommanding the cluster that extendsfrom Margate to Port Edward and in-land to Paddock and Izingolweni, onthe outstanding achievement of theSAPS Task Team he appointed in bring-ing those responsible for the murder ofGeoff to book within 48 hours.

Moodley, Colonel Govender andColonel Nkabinde, the Port Edward sta-tion commander, were personally onthe scene that fateful morning. Threeof the four suspects arrested are relat-ed and stay together in Umgangatho –in the NziMakwe area between Entabe-ni Clinic and Braemar.

Three are 21 and one is 20. Only onehas been linked to a previous criminalrecord at this stage.

Their case was remanded to 24 Feb-ruary for the appointment of legal aidand will then be remanded to a date tobe set for bail application. The SAPSand our community will vehementlyoppose that application.

Rhett Butler and I were at the PortEdward Police Station this morning todetermine whether any of the sets ofkeys the SAPS found in possession ofthe suspects belong to Geoff. In theprocess we were able to determinewithout doubt that all the criminal ac-

tivity in the Munro Drive and EarlyStreet area of Munster over the pastmonth was the work of these four.

Among the keys found was a Toyotacar key – probably a big car – with a safekey and a remote. If these might belongto you or someone you know pleasecontact me and I will give you the con-tact number of the relevant officer inthe SAPS. Thank you once again foryour wonderful support of the Stuartfamily at this time.

Thank you for celebrating Geoff’s life

RECENTLY I had to attend two generalmeetings in one afternoon - one in theEzinqoleni area and the other near Port Ed-ward.

To get to the second meeting I decidedthat rather than driving into Port Shep-stone and along the coast road to thesouth, I would take the cross country routefrom Ezinqoleni to Port Edward.

I am glad I did.The tarred road (with only a few tiny

sections of potholes) was almost void of

traffic and as the afternoon sun began toset, I was captivated by the undulating hilland valley landscapes that overlook thedistant ocean.

Groves of trees and lush edens of sub-tropical bush ushered me along my waythat also took in sugar-cane farms, acresof ripening bananas and the odd clusteringof well-maintained and proud home-steads.

As I began to descend towards thehumidity of the coast, the mix of coffee-

growing enterprise, a unique observatoryand a number of eco-adventure optionspresented themselves before one roadbranches off towards the naturalsplendour of the Umtamvuna River Valley.

The sobering moment came when theN2 junction loomed and hives of taxis do-ing their daily rounds jostled for prime cus-tomer opportunities.

On the N2 it dawned on me how oftenwe use motorway options and seldom ab-sorb the plethora of amazing things

around us, and we are all the poorer forit.

I wonder how many visitors, and evenresidents down here, have contemplatedtaking drives or cycles out and use thoseunheralded back roads within our majestichinterland.

In the words of the famed Americanpoet, Robert Frost, in his classic The RoadNot TakenI shall be telling this with a sighSomewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,I took the one less traveled by,And that has made all the difference.

So next time you wish to do a bit ofwondering, grab a copy of the Southern Ex-plorer Route Guide and sample those outthere places - it will make all the difference. It did for me.

Have a glorious time in our paradise,Frost would have.

Taking a road less travelled

Dear Doctor Nash, My husband has had a one-night stand with another woman who was livingwith us at the time. She was a friend of ours. Myhusband said that it was not his fault, that thewoman just came to him in the middle of the nightand got into bed with him. I was away on a busi-ness trip at that time. This is not the first time thatmy husband has been unfaithful. He also had anaffair in 2005 and I forgave him. I do not want tolose my marriage, but how do I handle this? Wehave two children and the marriage has been hap-py over the years, but I cannot put up with not be-ing able to trust him when he is out of my sight. We have good sex together but I always knowwhen he is interested in another woman becausehe changes and demands different positions. Helpplease for a willing wife.

Dear W.W. Please forgive me, I do not mean tobe rude, but is it possible that your husband getsbored with his life and seeks excitement in otherways than what he gets at home? You are a “will-ing wife” and he surely should be a happy man, butmaybehisbusinessorpersonallifeisnotgivinghim what he wants, and he has not got theinitiative to invent, or ask to go ahead and changethe routine that doesn’t seem to fulfil his needs.I suggest you start by having a conversation withhim and ask some very pointed and intimate ques-tions.

Also do not stop at your marriage, ask howhappy is he at work. Is he frustrated, bored, wantsa change? You are his partner in life and it is a two-way trade that demands honesty.

Try it..

Dear Doctor Nash, I want my husband to behappy, but after one or two beers, as he says, the“shutters come down” and he carries on drinkinguntil he passes out at four quarts or he runs arounddoing crazy things - he becomes hyper. The pastfew months he just does not remember what hedoes after a few drinks. When he has a beer then90% of the time he has to go on. He has no faithor belief in himself. He was at a special school andhisparents did not carewhether hewenttoschool.I am working and bringing in the money, my hus-band works on and off, he has his own gardeningbusiness and we manage to get along except forhis drinking. I know that he needs to go to for treat-ment and possibly join AA, but to get him to agree. He just says he does not need that. He does notacknowledge the extent of the problem What doI do? R.K.

Dear Mrs. R.K. You know the problem and youare 50% on the way to a solution. Yes, your hus-band needs to get off alcohol, but he will not whilehis mindset concerning himself remains the same. There is a lot of work to be done concerning yourhusband’s formative years, his upbringing andlearning to believe that although he has problems, the partnership with you can go a long way to solv-ing them.

He needs to complete the circle of rehabilitationvia his own co-operative efforts with you, other-wise he is doomed to continue in the pit he is nowin. He really needs to go to a rehabilitation centrefor three weeks, come out, join AA and then seea clinical psychologist with experience in addictionand marriage counseling. It will work. If you havea problem with all that please phone me. I wishyou well.

Dear Fever,WINNING the Ward 12 by-election with an in-

creased majority was extremely satisfying for theDemocratic Alliance. The voters of Ward 12 have cho-sen an excellent new councillor in Zuret Oppermanwho is determined to continue the good work of herpredecessor, the late Mike Henderson.

The DA said consistently throughout the cam-paign that we were the only party which could prevailin a head-to-head challenge with the ANC. We wonbecause we were able to mobilise support across allcommunities and in doing so, achieved some notablebreakthroughs.

One such achievement was winning a clear majori-ty in the Albersville voting district where previouslythe DA came second.

Another was a huge swing in Oshabeni where we

obtained 29% of the vote in a voting district with onlyblack voters.

The third achievement was to retain comfortablythe Umtentweni voting district which we won in 2011.This widespread support for the Democratic Alliancemeans that voters are clearly recognising our abilityto represent all South African in their demand forclean, corruption-free local government and reliableservice delivery.

The challenge for the new DA councillor is to workwith her DA team in the Hibiscus Coast Municipalityto ensure that the very real service delivery needs ofWard 12 residents are addressed by the responsibleofficials and that they are held accountable for serv-ing the people.

Relaxation and clearing one’smind can help destress couples, but if this does notwork, maybe it’s time to indulge in a massagetreatment to melt away anxiety and tension duringthe pre-marital period.

Massage can help in these ways:• decreased anxiety;• enhanced sleep quality;• greater energy;• improved concentration;• increased circulation; and• reduced overall fatigue.

These benefits come in handy during the wed-ding planning process. You may find that planningis easier and more enjoyable when you have anoutlet for any built-up stress and anxiety.

If you have never experienced a professionalmassage before, here’s what you can expect:• Most massage therapists work in a warm, quietoffice.• Your therapist will spend the first few minutesgathering information about any specific areas youwould like to focus on during your treatment.

selves after your treatment.Although it may seem indulgent for you and

your partner to receive regular massage treatments, the benefits may outweigh the costs in the longrun. Decreasing your stress levels before the wed-ding will help you and your spouse-to-be start yourmarriage off with ease. Camelot Spa in San Lameeroffers a selection of massages as well as pedicuresand manicures to keep your stress levels at an alltime low. For bookings call 039 313 0642.

Gee dit so paar

— Verskaf.

Open day of THANKSGIVING>> Silver Oaks is ownedand managed by Crusadefor Christ

with affordable facilities available for group stays orfunctions.

Silver Oaks can accommodate groups of 72 to 80people in dormitories, wooden cabins and a guestcottage. There is also a large hall, kitchen and diningarea suitable for large groups. For smaller groups orholidaymakers, the wooden cabins and guest cot-tage are equipped for self-catering. Large grassy are-as lend themselves to outdoor activities.

In partnership with Debbie van der Merwe, for-mally of Eagle’s Nest, Silver Oaks also offers focusedleadership, team-building and personal develop-ment training for youth and adult groups. CurrentlySilver Oaks is developing the grounds to accommo-date these courses, including the building of an ob-stacle course.

Avoid hard revving when coldStarting up from cold is when most engine wear

occurs. So give your vehicle a few minutes to warmup by using low engine revs as you drive. This allowsthe lubrication system to move oil right through theengine. When the temperature gauge is in the normaloperating zone, your vehicle is ready for what it doesbest.Driving smoothlyThe stop-start nature of city driving is hard on cars.By adopting a smooth, steady driving style you’ll dra-matically reduce wear on your engine, clutch, trans-mission, brakes and tyres. You’ll also use less fuel, which saves money and helps the environment.Always park in gearWhenever you park, ensure the handbrake is fully en-gaged and the car is left in gear. Select ‘P’ with anautomatic transmission, or first or reverse gear witha manual transmission. When parking downhill, point your wheels towards the kerb for extra safety.Avoid gutters, kerbs and bumps Try to avoid hitting

kerbs when parking and potholes at speed. The im-pact can put the front wheels out of alignment, caus-ing uneven and premature tyre wear. It can also causedamage to wheel rims and tyres.Keeping an eye on the gauges

Check your gauges regularly when driving. Watertemperature and oil pressure are most important asthey monitor your engine’s vital cooling and lubrica-tion systems. If these gauges move into the criticalzone, stop the car as soon as practical and get helpby calling your nearest Roadside Assistance. Similar-ly, if a warning light comes on, stop and get help. Formore information, please refer to your owner manual.

Avoid revving engine when cold, drive smoothly, always park ingear, avoid gutters, kerbs andbumps and keep an eye on thegauges are just some good drivingtips to remember.PHOTO: SOURCED

FEVER>> Hyundai Veloster Review

A new concept in a car, the Hyundai Veloster, combines the style of a coupé with the func-tionality of a hatchback. The Veloster is that

concept made real. It’s where design meets practi-cality.Withashortfrontoverhang,thispunchycoupépulls off a sporty look. It is low to the ground withwide apart wheels and a design that exudes style.Veloster drivers are certain to have a once-in-a-life-time driving experience.

The powerful and bold design of the exterior car-ries through to the interior. The driver’s space reflectsthe desire to provide a sporty, dynamic area that’smade complete by the addition of the high tech, styl-ishly designed components. From the purposefulcentre fascia to the metal-painted details aroundthe centre console, door handles, air vents and gearstick – you can be sure that the Veloster has it all, inside and out.

The 1.6 litre petrol engine of the Veloster provides103kW of power and 167Nm of torque. The innova-tive engine of the Veloster paves the way for otherHyundai models, by being the first vehicle in therange to have a GDi powered engine introduced toSouth Africa. The system injects atomised fuel intothe cylinders at high pressure to provide maximumpower and efficiency.

The Hyundai Veloster embodies uniquenessthrough its innovative and breakthrough design. That’s why we offer a wide range of genuine accesso-ries, allowing you to customize your car to suit yourunique tastes and lifestyle. Our genuine accessoriesare designed and built to Hyundai’s high qualitystandards to ensure you always get the most out ofyour vehicle. Carefully selected material and practi-cal technology ensure that there’s something to ca-ter for you and your needs. — Supplied.

The Hyundai Veloster is takingthe motoring world by storm.

THE Margate Saints Surf Lifesaving Clubbuilding on St Mike’s beach received aR200 000 makeover recently.
