Fr. Kevin’s Cluttered Desk From St. Gregory of Nyssa we hear the words "the one thing truly worthwhile, is becoming God's friend." When I began to reflect on these words I was struck by the fact they had been uttered hundreds of years ago and still remain “truth." I know I have preached often about what is important in our lives and questioned each of our priorities but that last word “friend," needs to be explored. There is a fad today in which people seem to want to collect friends. On Facebook people have all kinds of friends, on Twitter we have all kinds of followers, and the list goes on. But really, what are these followers and friends? Personally I have one best friend in the whole world. Sorry for those of you thinking Jesus, sorry no. Jesus is more than a friend, he is my partner in life, my spouse, the love of my life. But my best friend is someone I can trust with anything, someone I can share anything with, someone who knows me so well they will not let me get away with anything. And no, we don't connect on Facebook or follow each other on Twitter. We talk, we email, we spend time with each other. We don't share on Facebook because the world does not need to know what we share. My best friend is somewhat like Jesus. What I share with Jesus stays with Jesus. Or it is like what I share in the confessional stays with Jesus, but is forgotten by the priest. What I share with my best friend stays with my best friend, is remembered by my best friend, and yes, it sometimes is played back to me, to make me remember and grow. So how do I become God's friend? I need to take everything God has shared with me and remember it, Baptism, the Eucharist, Confession, the gifts of the Spirit, and life itself.

Peace Fr. Kevin

Things you learn when you travel For many Europeans a church is not really a church if it took less than 50 years to build. The current Koln (Cologne) Cathedral has been under construction for 600 years and is still not completed. Also there has been a church on that spot since the 4th century. The first church in Koln was based on an earlier design found in Dura, part of Syria. Here the key point was all about gathering, bringing the community together to give worship to God, primarily in the sacred meal.

The first house churches had movable altars generally made of wood and were found on a raised platform at the east end of the room. The priest stood on one side and the people were gathered around the raised platform. It was only in the 9th century that the Altar was moved to the east wall and the priest turned his back to the people.

In 517 the requirement for a stone Altar came into effect or at least the top had to be stone. Today the Altar must be of some worthy material but it is still encouraged to have an Altar of stone.

From the 5th century onward we begin to see a screening off from the people the Altar. Canopy's were erected around the Altar and veils to create separation were installed.

From the second century onward, nothing was ever placed on the Altar that did not connect to the Liturgy. Therefore no candles or flowers were ever on the Altar.

Interestingly enough, none of these churches had seats, and even today many still don't have fixed seating. Sagrada Familia in Barcelona holds 8000 people for celebration but there are no fixed seats or any intention of having fixed seating. Part of this is to allow for movement by the people. With its 4 foot thick pillars you need to move to be able to see the Liturgy. St. Peter's in Rome has no fixed seating all the seats have to be brought out and set up for each Liturgy. The lack of fixed seating is one of the things that tends to create the image of churches as museums.

The image of the church as a Museum tends to also take its position from the fact that many churches in Europe and even Canada require you to make a donation to gain access to the church. They don't issue a tax receipt though. In a number of places, showing my priest ID got me in without paying, but those traveling with me had to pay. I am happy to say that the places we had to pay to get in generally did not have the Blessed Sacrament present, again adding to the image of museum.

Sagrada Familia in Barcelona has 3 million guests per year, coming to see this architectural wonder, but it's just a building, it's soul and heart are found in the crypt where daily mass and Sunday mass is regularly held. On the Sunday that I was there, the main body of the church was set up for an evening concert. Mass, however, was in the crypt, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, and God's holy people.

Consecra)on  to  Jesus  through  Mary

We  are  thinking  of  doing  33  Days  to  Morning  Glory  Consecra1on  to  Jesus  through  Mary  as  a  parish  star1ng  the  last  week  in  October  and  finishing  December  8  in  an1cipa1on  of  the  Year  of  Mercy  Jubilee.    To  be  able  to  do  this  we  need  a  general  idea  of  the  number  of  people  who  are  interested.  The  cost  for  materials  would  be  approximately  $30  per  person.  Please  email  [email protected]  or  call  the  parish  office  if  you  are  interested.    Also  we  would  like  to  know  if  you  can  be  a  small  group  leader  or  overall  coordinator.  Some  may  have  already  done  Consecra1on  to  Jesus  through  Mary,  and  this  will  be  an  opportunity  to  renew  and  deepen  it.  Please  let  us  know  by  October  7  if  you  are  interested.
