Praying for Mercy
St. Francis invites us to pray that we might be instru-
ments of peace. Pope Francis challenges us to love
mercy. United by a belief in the inherent sanctity of
all human life, we will gather on the Feast of Francis
to "Pray for Mercy". Our focus will be on the vic-
tims of deadly violence and their families, as well as
all those who are on death row, especially those near-
ing execution. We pray for an end to the death penal-
ty, and for an end to all direct attacks on any human
life, from conception to natural death. We pray for
an end to violence in our homes, on our streets, on
the battlefield and in our prisons. Join us for Mass
on Saturday, October 4th (the Feast of St. Fran-
cis) at 9 am at St. Patrick Church (406 E. Pinhook
Road, Lafayette, LA). More info: Diocesan Pro-Life
Apostolate at 337-261-5607, or St. Patrick at 337-237

Holy Hour for Vocations Please join us for our monthly “Holy Hour for Vocations
and for the Spiritual Renewal of All Priests” on Monday,
October 6, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at St. Patrick Catholic
Church, 406 E. Pinhook Road. Recitation of the Rosary begins at 5:30 p.m. All are welcome to join in these pray-
ers for vocations and perseverance of vocations to the
priesthood and religious life, sponsored by the Serra Club of Lafayette.
Six Week Bible Study—St. Jules Catholic Church One of the most beloved and familiar chapters of the Bible
is Psalm 23, which begins, “The Lord is my shepherd, I
shall not want....” These beautiful words were probably
written by King David, who was himself a shepherd as a young man. We have heard these familiar words many
times--especially when we need the comfort and peace of
being in the flock of the Good Shepherd. Because the words are so familiar, we sometimes tend to recite them
without truly considering them, but there is so much mean-
ing and reassurance for us as Christians in this beautiful prayer. Please join us for a six week Bible study on Psalm
23 which will explore this psalm in depth. Presented by:
Susan Castille; October 16-November 20, 2014; Thursday
mornings from 9:30-11:30 AM, at St. Jules Catholic Church, 400 Macon Road, Lafayette. To register, call 981-
1455 by October 13th. $15.00 donation appreciated.
No previous Bible Study experience required
Mass of Remembrance for Loved Ones Lost to Suicide
Recent national headlines have brought about a renewed
focus on the causes and tragedy of suicide. Many local families have been directly affected by personal guilt and
concerns associated with a loved one taking their own life.
Since Vatican II, the Church recognizes that it bears re-sponsibility to comfort those who mourn, and offer hope
for the eternal state of those lost to suicide. St. Joseph
Church, 401 South Adams Avenue, Rayne, will celebrate a very special Mass of Remembrance on Monday, Octo-
ber 13, at 7:00 p.m. It is our hope that this Mass will instill
a sense of peace and inner healing to all who attend, as well
as offer a powerful prayer for God’s mercy and forgiveness for the special Mass intentions offered that evening. Please
make plans to attend.

From the Pastor’s Desk
Fast approaching are the dates for the international Synod of Bishops to be held in Rome from Oct. 5-19, and prayers are being requested for its success. The topic is “The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelization “. We have provided prayer cards near the main entrance of the Church, and invite you to pray for our bishops and the Holy Father. And while not specifically about the family, I offer the following excerpt from Pope Francis’ “The Joy of the Gospel”. Here, he speaks about that interaction between the Gospel and hu-man culture, of which the family is an intimate part:
“115. The People of God is incarnate in the peoples of the earth, each of which has its own culture. The con-cept of culture is valuable for grasping the various expressions of the Christian life present in God’s people. It has to do with the lifestyle of a given society, the specific way in which its members relate to one another, to other creatures and to God. Understood in this way, culture embraces the totality of a people’s life.[84] . . . . The human person is al-ways situated in a culture: “nature and culture are intimately linked”.[87] Grace supposes culture, and God’s gift be-comes flesh in the culture of those who receive it.
“116. In these first two Christian millennia, countless peoples have received the grace of faith, brought it to flower in their daily lives and handed it on in the language of their own culture. Whenever a community receives the message of salvation, the Holy Spirit enriches its culture with the transforming power of the Gospel. The history of the Church shows that Christianity does not have simply one cultural expression, but rather, “remaining completely true to itself, with unswerving fidelity to the proclamation of the Gospel and the tradition of the Church, it will also reflect the different faces of the cultures and peoples in which it is received and takes root”.[88] In the diversity of peoples who experience the gift of God, each in accordance with its own culture, the Church expresses her genuine catholicity and shows forth the “beauty of her varied face”.[89] In the Christian customs of an evangelized people, the Holy Spirit adorns the Church, showing her new aspects of revelation and giving her a new face. Through incul-turation, the Church “introduces peoples, together with their cultures, into her own community”,[90] for “every cul-ture offers positive values and forms which can enrich the way the Gospel is preached, understood and lived”.[91] In this way, the Church takes up the values of different cultures and becomes sponsa ornata monilibus suis, “the bride bedecked with her jewels” (cf. Is 61:10)”.[92]”
It is in the midst of a particular culture that we ‘glorify the Lord with our lives’.
