GOOD SHEPHERD LUTHERAN CHURCH

ABERDEEN, SD (605) 229-0846

September 2021

Dear friends,

In his 2012 album Into the Light, Matthew West released the song Do Something. The lyrics of this song seem more true today then nearly a decade ago:

I woke up this morning / Saw a world full of trouble now, thought / How'd we ever get so far down, and / How's it ever gonna turn around / So I turned my eyes to Heaven / I thought, "God, why don't You do something?" / Well, I just couldn't bear the thought of / People living in poverty / Children sold into slavery / The thought disgusted me / So, I shook my fist at Heaven / Said, "God, why don't You do something?" He said, "I did, yeah, I created you"

Today when I look at the turmoil in the world I sometimes stop and wonder, “God, why don’t you do something?” Only to hear those powerful words in response: “I did, I created you.”

God created us in his image – filled with compassion, love, mercy, grace, and hope for tomorrow. How do we put these God-traits within us to use making a difference in the world? At times it seems daunting because there are world 7.8 billion people in the world and I am only one person. How can I possibly make a difference?

ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton often reminds us we are church, we are Lutheran, we are church together, and we are church for the sake of the world. We are a gathering of God’s children; walking by faith, trusting God's promise in the gospel and knowing that we exist by and for the proclamation of this gospel word; joined in the resurrection to God and one another; freed from sin and death, even from ourselves, so that we can live as ministers of reconciliation in loving and generous service of our neighbors.

What does that mean for us here in Aberdeen at Good Shepherd?

It means we can make a difference in the world – in the lives of those who call Good Shepherd home, those in Aberdeen, across our state and nation, and indeed the four corners of the world.

To make that a reality, we need to step out in faith – together. Throughout September and October we will be asking who among us will join in the parade of life – sharing our time, talent, and treasure for the building up of the Kingdom of God.

As Matthew West wrote, “So, I shook my fist at Heaven / Said, "God, why don't You do something?" He said, "I did, I created you." We can, together, change the world. Will you join me as we step out in faith? I pray you respond, I’m IN!”

Exultation Bells

Cheryl Ulmer is excited to welcome everyone back for a wonderful year of ringing in celebration of God's many blessings. The Exultation Bells continue to add liturgical banners to the bell tables. Recently, a pair of forest green banners were added for the season after Pentecost. These banners were purchased and donated by Cheryl Ulmer in memory of her father, Kermit Ulmer.

Page 7 DELTA KAPPA GAMMA USED BOOK SALE

SEPTEMBER 9, 10, 11 - WYLIE PARK PAVILION

After a busy summer of collecting books, we are preparing for the big sale! Thousands of books in every genre, and on every topic imaginable, have been donated. Prices are low, and the selection is great! A reminder, too, that 100% of the profits from this sale go to scholarships. We thank everyone who donated books to the collection sites around town, and especially those here at Good Shepherd. We want to also thank the Good Shepherd staff for so generously offering a work space for us this summer. It has been a so helpful to have a comfortable environment to process donations quickly and efficiently. DKG workers have filled a grocery cart for the food pantry each month as a way of showing appreciation.

Thank you all! Come to the Sale!

Bazaar 2021 A Go! It Takes a Village to Plan a Bazaar!

The women are planning the “Shepherd’s Market” Bazaar for October 23, 2021. We have begun the organizing and planning meetings.

As things begin to take shape the congregation will be updated. We will notify you through “The Story”, the website, bulletin & social media. It does take a village to stage this event. Our co-chairs are Jean Black and Janet Fauth-Bitz.

We appreciate each item you donate, whether it is food, a craft item, linens, quilts or attic treasures. Your prayers for a fruitful 2021 Bazaar would be so appreciated. Pray for Bazaar planning, for the volunteers, for your servant heart willing to serve, for our customers to be a blessing.

If you make jams, jellies can cucumbers, vegetables and soups; please make a few extra ones for the Bazaar. Plants are always liked. We will be selling slices of pie at lunch time. Homemade pies will be needed. If you have created items for the Bazaar in the past your gifts would be appreciated for this year.

Baked goods and candies can be brought to the church on Friday October 22. Crafts, jams & jellies should be brought on Wednesday October 20.

Volunteers will be needed. We have a spot for you. It takes a Village to make this happen!

Musicians Needed for the Shepherd’s Market Bazaar

We are looking for Musicians (of any age) to play an instrument during the “Shepherd's Market” Bazaar. Time slots are 9am to 3pm on Saturday, October 23rd. Any amount of time from 2 minutes to 30 minutes. The Bazaar Committee wants to have music in the Sanctuary for people to sit and listen during the bazaar. Contact Sharon Bossert for a time slot (605)225-3821. Leave a message. THANK YOU!

NORTHERN PLAINS WELCA FALL GATHERING

The Northern Plains WELCA Fall Gathering will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Faulkton, SD on SEPTEMBER 18, 2021. (PLEASE NOTE: This is a change in location from the original information.) The Theme is "Let Your Light Shine". Registration is $12.00 which includes lunch. Sharon Bossert will be driving and has room for 4 more women. Please contact Sharon (380-7592) if you would like to come! It's a great time of fellowship with women from many ELCA churches.

Mission of the Month

The recipient of September’s Mission of the Month (Noisy Offering) is Little Lambs Preschool. The money will be used for supplies and other needs during the school year. If you are coming to church in person, you can make your offering there on the 2nd and 4th Sundays. If you worship online, you can mail your donation to the church and designate it for the Noisy Offering. Little Lambs mission is to nurture a love of God and a love of learning. We believe preschool is a place where many children begin their initial education experience. A time of growing in

awareness of self and others that allows children to play, explore, and imagine. Each child will feel safe, loved, and respected and recognized as an individual with needs and potential.

Food Pantry

Volunteers are needed to help at the Food Pantry when we go back to indoor distribution on September 20th. Food and beverages will be served. The Food Pantry is accepting food donations, and of course monetary contributions are always appreciated. Suggested food items include peanut butter, pasta, pasta sauce, cereal, and any other canned or boxed item. The Food Pantry operates the third Monday of each month from 4:00– 6:00pm.

I'm IN

As Christ-followers, we are walking the Path of Discipleship, one step at a time. Despite all that has changed in the world around us, Good Shepherd is still INviting, INspiring and INvesting for the sake of the world.

As a ministry outpost of the Gospel, we’re called to share the Good News; care for the least, the lost, and the lonely; gather for fellowship and worship; and make a difference in the world around us. We do all this not out of duty, but out of gratitude for all we’ve already been given.

This fall I INvite you to consider sharing out of your giftedness in three distinct ways: 1) financially supporting our everyday ministry in Aberdeen though our Fall Stewardship Campaign, 2) volunteering in that ministry, and 3) making a special (one-time or over three years) financial contribution to needed facility improvements that enable us to continue our call as God’s mission outpost at N Dakota St and 15th Ave NE.

Be on the lookout for more information on how you can declare, “I’m IN!”
