BOIPATONG. - Fifty-nine-year-old SelinaNyembe is in possession of a title deed andEmfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) ac-counts.

Yet she lives in a three-room shack.Nyembe said the problem started after she

allowedMaphiri AnnahMkhosi to temporari-ly stay in the house 12 years ago:

“We had an agreement that when I demandmy house, we’re not going to fight,” says Ny-embe. Mkhosi was allocated a house inBophelong Extension and moved out.

Mkhosi’s mistake was to leave a relativeof her late fiancee Motseki April Mogotsi inthe house. The relative refused to move out, claiming that the house belonged to their latefather. “The deceased never had a house be-fore,” said Mkhosi. Nyembe is the legitimateowner of the house. Together with Mogotsi,we knew that the house belonged to Nyembeand we must hand it back as soon as I receive

mine,” says Mkhosi. A woman currently liv-ing in the house apparently knows the situa-tion. That woman’s boyfriend David Mafubeis the son of the late Mogotsi. Mafube hassince left his girlfriend in the house:

“Nyembe is the rightful owner of thathouse,” saysMkhosi. “Mafube hasmoved outof the house. The only obstacle is his formergirlfriend. The girlfriend claimed that thehouse belonged to her father-in-law, which isnot true,” says Mkhosi. Nyembe says the mu-nicipality accounts skyrocket, but she doesnot even drink water from that house.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Students of the VaalUniversity of Technology (VUT) ran amok, rampaging, burning checkpoints, throwingdustbins onto the streets last week.

A VUT spokesperson told Sedibeng Steryesterday that all classes have been suspend-ed until further notice. Apparently B-Techand Engineering students accused the Na-tional Student Financial Aid Scheme(NSFAS) of making only 40% of its moneyavailable as grants and the rest as loans whenthey demand at least 75% as grants.

Last week’s barricading of entrances af-fected management, who then did not haveaccess. After burning the checkpoints, Em-fuleni Fire and Rescue were called but stu-dents blocked the road, threatening to burnthe truck. VUT spokespersonMike Khubonesaid students started fighting for not receiv-ing what they expected from the office ofDr Blade Nzimande, Minister for Higher Ed-ucation. They now demand that the institu-tion provide or look for sponsors that couldpay for their studies. “Our sin was that wecould not access sponsors,” said Khubone.“Our first meeting with the Student Repre-

sentative Council (SRC) was fruitless.”Khuboni said they didn’t see all the vio-

lence because the students had burned thecheckpoints.

He said the management issued letters ap-pealing to students to open the check-points.An SRC member who did not wantto be identified said they demand safety andsecurity on the campus.

The source said they will resume classesonce they receive an SMS from NFSAS stat-ing that money has been deposited into theiraccounts. The students added that they haveon numerous occasions engaged with theVice Chancellor Professor Irene Moutlana.By Tuesday, all VUT students were told tovacate the building as the campus had beenclosed until further notice.

Students were given a letter which noti-fied them: “Be informed that managementhas decided to close the university with im-mediate effect. Students are given 24 hoursto vacate the University residences.

“We appeal to students not to engage infurther protests or disruptive and violent be-havior.” Meanwhile VUT remains closeduntil further notice.

ORANGE FARMS. - Skhumbuzo Secon-dary School in Orange Farm and Sakhisi-zwe Secondary School a few kilometresfrom Orange Farm - Kwa-Majazana - wereboth raided by Public Safety MEC SizakeleNkosi-Malobane on Monday morning.

The main aim of the raid was to bringstability within these two schools. Bothheadmasters had alerted the Public Safetyoffice about their issues. The schools hadexperienced uncontrollable behavior bystudents.

MECNkosi-Malobane indicated that un-controllable behavior at schools can be cur-bed. “All our children need is love and toknow the implications of their actions. Eve-ry action fetches a reaction. With crime, there is prison,” said Nkosi- Malobane du-ring the raiding of the schools.

When asked if there is a plan to raid theirway through the south side of the Vaal orthrough the entire Sedibeng in future, theMEC said they are planning to eliminatebad behavior in schools.

“A child is raised by a village while fa-thered and mothered by parents. The issueof alcohol abuse in schools is supposed tobe an issue of the past. Alcohol and drugabuse in schools is a societal matter. Weneed to support the schools as parents. Our

children experience levels of peer pressurethat are problematic and not easy to dealwith,” said Nkosi-Malobane.

Both principals were thrilled by the raidsconducted by Police, who turned theschools upside-down from the first class tothe last.

The death of a local activist last week hasleft the community in shock. A personwho departs from this earth never trulyleaves, for they are still alive in our heartsand minds and, through us, they live on.

I knewAndile ‘Kgotsi’ Xaba personal-ly, though not in depth, but I will tell youthat he was a ‘people’s person’. Yearsago when I first arrived in the field ofjournalism in this region he was a person

one had to liaise with at themunicipal offices, particularly when it came to major functionsand pool (snooker) competitions of course.Years later I came to live in the same neigh-bourhood as him and his family.I would not like to make a eulogy here as

the time and platform does not allow. Insteadwhat I would like to do is send my deepestcondolences to those who feel the pain of lo-sing a magnificent human being, an exceptio-nal gentleman and a wonderful soul that wasAndile.Losing a friend is one of the most painful

experiences a personmust endure in life. Eve-rybody at some point has lost a friend, and

it is hard for us to accept that a person weshared so many moments with and trustedwith so many things, is no longer in our life.Although the death of friends saddens oursouls and leaves an empty space, we mustmove on and always remember themwith joy.A way to accept the loss of a dear one is tosay goodbye to them and tell everyone elsewhat good friends they were and how we willmiss them.I am always saddened by the death of a

good person. It is from this sadness that a fee-ling of gratitude emerges. I feel honoured tohave known them and blessed that their pas-sing serves as a reminder to me that my time

on this beautiful earth is limited and thatI should seize the opportunity I have to for-give, share, explore, and love. I can thinkof no greater way to honour the deceasedthan to live this way.Death is never easy when you know the

people doing the dying. Please accept mydeepest condolences. Kgotsi will never beforgotten.John 14:1-2 “Do not let your hearts be

troubled. Trust in God, trust also in me. Inmy Fathers house are many rooms, if it we-re not so, I would have told you. I am goingto prepare a place for you.Lerato...

Rest in peace ‘Kgotsi’

SEBOKENG. - Soul Provider, a non-govern-mental organisation (NGO) that works withthe Social Crime Prevention and Awarenessprogramme truly outdid itself when a ‘chan-ge’ programme was conducted for localschools recently.

The reason for the programme was to cre-ate a working relationship with youth whoare in conflict with the law and at risk ofcommitting crime and destroying their lives.

“It’s a fact that crime does not pay, butonly wastes time and energy that could bechanneled into positive matters that couldelevate their livesfor the future,” saysex-convict BabaKubheka, managerof Soul Provider.

Soul Provider em-barked on the cam-paign in conjunctionwith the Departmentof Education: “Theobjective was to rea-lise our dream tocurb and minimisecrime in schools andto have safety am-bassadors,” Kubhe-ka says adding thatthey adopted schoolsand conductedworkshops and se-minars to spread themessage of CrimePrevention, chan-ging the mindset ofyoung people inschools.

Bophelong Se-condary School,with at least 100 le-arners from Sun-crest, Ramolelle and

Ramusukalla (rural schools), Tsolo and Sap-phire, were among the schools that took partin this programme. Says NGO co-ordinatorTshepiso Chuena, “The training aims to edu-cate learners about responsibilities in life,Crime Prevention, HIV, and Prevention ofSubstance Abuse.

The good part of the programme is thatit uses young people who are not agents ofchange, but who are ‘change agents’ becausewe believe they have walked the path andare in the best position to narrate their torridexperiences to young people who are caughtup in the same web of confusion.”

EVATON. - Education is the key to success. This was stressed when Qedilizwe Seconda-ry School learners for the first time celebra-ted ‘International Literacy Day’ on Mondayas a way to promote a culture of readingamongst young kids.

The theme for this year is “Literacy andSustainable Development”. The aim of theday was to highlight the importance of litera-cy to individuals, communities and societies.Another reason was to raise awareness of thevalue of the written word.

The crowd was filled with creative stu-dents with many reciting poems they hadwritten themselves. On the first floor werethose learners who kept their brains stimula-ted by forming part of the spelling Bee team, which saw the competition get tougher to-wards the end of the day.

The event was organised by the SongFoundation, which aims to improve the livesof scholars by providing career guidance inpartnership with North-West University inthe Faculty of Law.

The founder of Song Foundation - PoppyPule - said, “We regard today as the mostimportant day of the year, as we instill a cul-ture of reading and writing among young pe-ople.We believe that literacy involves a con-tinuum of learning in enabling individualsto achieve their goals,” said Pule. The educa-tors at the school were impressed at how thelearners reacted and the programmes thatwere set that day.

Pule states that it is crucial for those whohave managed to make a success of their ca-reers to continue helping those that are stillgoing through the journey:

“Our foundation works a lot with girl chil-dren. We invite career women who are dedi-cated to bringing development to young girlsto form part of the foundation’s mentor club,” she ends.

Some men are called men just because theywear trousers, but in reality they don’t quali-fy as men.Shooting From The Hip can say the same

of certain local development coaches and ad-ministrators in this region. They have no

“balls”, to say the least! For example, howcan one explain the LFA Squad being selec-ted at the dusty James Ground in Sharpevil-le? To make things worse, some teams withgood football structures were not invited forthe selections.

The truth of the matter is that Master Zon-do and Philip Ndlovumust give the EmfuleniLocal Football Association teams a good re-ason why the LFA squad was selected at theJames Ground.

To make matters worse, this time aroundthe very people who took the squad to thefinal last year were not invited for selections. What do these gentlemen want to achieveas far as the development of football is con-

cerned in this region?Shooting From The Hip is worried becau-

se as things stand, some very influential peo-ple in football have decided to take a backseat and fold their arms to watch theseclowns as they expose themselves.

To some, they see the regional squads asa holiday destination while others see it asa ‘gravy-train.’ The question Shooting FromThe Hip wants to ask Master Zondo who,I was told, is the Emfuleni Local FootballAssociation Technical Director is: How didour LFA squad end up being selected at Ja-mes Ground?Shooting From The Hip also asks Emfule-

ni Local Football Association’s chairman

Philip Ndlovu:How - as chairman - did he allow our LFA

squad to be selected under those conditions, taking into consideration that the tournamentis played on a dusty pitch?

Gentlemen, you have much to explain tothe development teams and coaches in thisregion. The reason why the Evaton teamswere left out is another issue that needs tobe explained. If they didn’t play the league, who is to blame? So you punish those poorchildren because of your egos? Come on, so-mebody! The problems we have in this regi-on cannot be fixed by humans - we needGodly intervention. Please GOD, save ourfootball from these vultures!

Our football needs higher intervention!

SHARPEVILLE. - Former soccer great Si-mon ‘Bull’ Lehoko hailed the Neil JansenMemorial Games a success.

The event took place at Sharpeville’s Ge-orge Thabe Stadium over the weekend.

The tournament was in honour of this fal-len hero - Neil Jansen - who tragically diedon the field while playing for SedibengMas-ters in April. The tragic death of this formerVaal Professional and Giant Blackspool starcame as a shock to many.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Lehokosaid this Neil Jansen Memorial Games willbe part of celebrating a heritage when theyhost it again next year.

He was full of praise for the teams and lo-cal soccer fans who came to support and tookpart in the 1st Inaugural Neil Jansen Games.

The games saw yesteryear soccer starsplaying among themselves to entertain local

soccer fans. Some of the former professionalstars who graced the event included deadlyformer Orlando Pirates striker Moses ‘Ram-bo’ Moloi, Bricks Mbele and Geelbooi ‘Go-ma’ Masango, to mention but a few.

Even though the turnout was not good, Le-hoko believes that next year will be muchbetter.

The poor turnout was caused by the festi-val at DlomoDam, just a few kilometres fromthe George Thabe Stadium.

“I want to take this opportunity to thankall the participating teams and Sharpevillepeople who came to support the initiative. The games would not have been so succes-sful if it wasn’t for them.

I also wish to thank Neil Jansen's familyfor allowing us to organise the event. I haveno doubt that the next event will be muchbetter and we intend to invite teams fromoutside the Vaal,” said Lehoko.

VEREENIGING. - Vereeniging SocialCrime Prevention commander InspectorOujan Mohoboko invested his time andenergy in the unleashing of hidden talentin young boys in his neighbourhood ofSteelpark over the weekend.

On Saturday and Sunday the CrimePrevention Commander and resident ofthe area organised a soccer tournamentthat was supported by young local teamsand neighbouring areas, including Tshe-piso and Muvhango.

The two-day soccer tournament was asuccess. Mohoboko says he is investinghis time and energy in these young boys, who will be leaders of this area in thefuture: “We received support from nu-

merous local businessmen whom wewould like to thank. Some supportedwith money, which was a cash prize forthe two finals and some with food,” hesays.Mohoboko started this initiative af-ter realising that there was a high rateof crime and alcohol abuse amongst yo-uth in the area.

“Sport brings discipline to a personand in life once you lose the edge of dis-cipline respect will be gone as well sowe are glad that there are people that stillthink for the youth in our area,” says abystander and soccer-lover.

Ndlovu is not part of the Regional Executi-ve Committee and cannot talk about play-offs. Meanwhile, Sedibeng Ster Sport haslearned that the bad blood among localfootball administrators affects two campsin this region. Sedibeng Ster Sport has alsolearned that ‘secret meetings’ have beenheld in this region in preparation for theforthcoming regional elections.

SEDIBENG. - “It is wrong for EmfuleniLocal Football Association (ELFA) to talkon behalf of the region.” This was said bySafa Sedibeng League coordinator – Beau-ty Molise this week.

Molise said this following an article pu-blished last week in Sedibeng Ster Sportunder the headline “Regional Play-Offs”whre ELFA chairman Philip Ndlovu talk-ed about regional play-offs.

Putting the record straight, Molisi saysRegional Play-Offs is a Safa Sedibengmatter and nothing to do with ELFA.

He says that, after the article was pu-blished, she received lots of calls fromconcerned teams.

She says the article was misleadingwhen Ndlovu said no Promotion Leagueis played in the Midvaal area.

She says this has brought tension to theregion with some teams questioning Ndlo-vu’s statement in the newspaper.

“We want to put the record straight thatMr Ndlovu was not representing the regi-on. The region will be the one that setsthe date and venue of the regional play-offs. The LFAs (local football administra-tors) have nothing to do with regionalplay-offs,” says Molise.

As if this is not enough, Molise says
