safety tips forthe festive season

is your home safe and secure during the festive season?

is your vehicle in gearfor the festive season?

are you ready to havea safe journey on the road?

Ensuring the security of family and property isa key priority at this time of the year.! Advise your security company if you are going away andensure that you supply all the necessary informationregarding an alternate contact, in the case of anemergency

! Inform your neighbours of your holiday plans so thatthey can keep an eye on your property

Before you hit the road it would bewise to ensure that your vehicleis ready to avoid any nasty surprises along yourway.Follow this simple checklist to ensure the safety of your vehicle. Check the following:! Tyres - a simple tread depth test will tell you if your tyres are wonderful or worn (Asa general rule of thumb:make sure the tread depth exceeds 1mm across the entiresurface of the tyre for them to be legal)

! Brakes - check pads and discs! Windscreen - fix repairable chips! The condition of your windscreen wipers! Lights;make sure all lights, especially your brake lights, are in good working order! Battery! The condition of your spare tyre - tread and tyre pressure! Shock absorbers! That you have a warning / breakdown triangle in your boot! Water and oil level

Whether youwill be driving 20 or 200 kilometres during the holidayperiod, it's never beenmore important to be aware of the roadconditions and be a safe and courteous driver. Here are a few road safety tips for you and your family:! Plan your travel time - plan your trip and accommodate sufficient stops along the route.Leave on time with room to spare so you don't find yourself stressing on the road.

! Make sure your car is in good shape - even if your car is fairly new, make sure to checkthe essentials before you head out: tyres, brakes, oil levels, coolants, and evenwindshield wipers can make all the difference between a good trip and one that ends inan accident

! Distractions are prohibited - do not even consider talking on your cell, texting, orotherwise engaging in any distracting activities during your drive. If you must take a call, use a rest stop, or pull over safely away from the road to make or return a call.

! Long travel requires plenty of rest - a good night's sleep the night before you travel isessential!

! Stop all newspaper deliveries and ask a friend orneighbour to collect your post. A bulging post box is adead giveaway that you are not at home

! If hiring a house sitter, ensure that you teach them howto use your alarm correctly

! Double check that you have locked and secured allwindows and doors before leaving home

! Never leave a key in the inside of an outer door whichhas glass panels or glass near the door lock

The festive season is fast approaching and we are left with many decisions and preparations to make beforepacking our bags and making our way to our holiday destinations. Some of these preparations include:preparing your house for the period you will be away, checking your vehicle before you hit the road, planningyour route, rest periods and also your behaviour on the road. Below are some tips to assist you with theplanning and preparation for your well deserved break this festive season.

From Sasol we wish the community, our employees and service providersall the very best for this festive season and a prosperous 2014.

Remember: If it is not safe, don't do it!

! Sliding doors can be secured simply by placing a pieceof timber cut to size in the sliding rail.

! Do not leave tools like ladders or spades outside, asthey may be used to break into your house

! Clear signage indicating that your home is beingmonitored by security also helps to discourage burglars

! Be discreet about your holiday plans – do not announceyour holiday plans on social media

BOIPATONG. - Boipatong Police ended up ar-resting more than 50 protesters last week.

This happened when senior ex-workers, inalliance with the Vaal Community Assembly,Vaal Environmental Justice Alliance (VEJA),Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions against Isra-

el in South Africa (BDS South Africa), flockedto Cape Gate head offices in Boipatong.

The demonstrators were protesting againstCape Gate’s alleged exploitation of workersand support for Apartheid Israel. The last strawfor the protesters came when Cape Gate offici-als allegedly failed to respond to a memoran-

dum that was submitted on the 8th of October2013.

“We are here to demand our money fromCape Gate - that is all we want. We are tiredof being sent from one place to another,” statedthe ex-employees who claimed that Cape Gatehad exploited them by not giving them whatwas due to them. The workers stated that alt-hough they worked hard for the company, theirchildren were now going hungry.

Police tried many times to tell workers to

leave the gate they had closed, as its closurewas hindering production, but they respondedflatly that they would stay there until they re-ceived an answer to their demands. “We arenow going to arrest everyone as this is nowconsidered to be an illegal gathering. The ap-plication stated that the protest would last fortwo hours and they have run out of time,” saida police officer.

Protesters were arrested and held at the Boi-patongPolice Station and released the next day.

It is very crucial to prevent any more los-ses due to their actions.

The parents of these boys must also warntheir kids about the dangers of what they aredoing.” “We havemade examples of the oneswe have caught and we will continue to bringthem in as what they are doing is a crime.”Koago concludes.

BOIPATONG. - Scrap metal thieves, popu-larly known as “Bashemane ba tshepe”, havebeen at the helm of controversy for havingcaused major accidents that have claimed pe-ople’s lives. Some of the thieves themselveshave died tragic deaths during these robbe-ries. These are the guys that stand on differentcorners and wait for trucks carrying metal. They then clamber onto the trucks and startthrowing down the scrap metal left, right andin the middle of the road, where a pedestriancould bewalking, or where a vehicle carryingpassengers could be passing. It seems that nothing has been done by law

The project willstart with demonstrations betweenMarchand April. Cllr Hlongwane said the smart

public participation and through the IDP.Municipal Manager Sam Shabalala saidall areas are going to be affected. “Weare the only municipality in the countryto go for both smart metering and elec-tricity. The final batch of 151 bi-cycles was handed over to Sicelo SecondarySchool, bringing the total number of bicyclesdistributed for the year to 371.Whilst most pupils have embraced the spi-

rit of the project and are using the bicycles

as intended, there have been a few unfortuna-te incidents of parents or other communitymembers utilising the bicycles for personaluse. Midvaal MMC for Protection CouncillorJames Botsoere, has warned that abuse of thebikes will not be tolerated. He said if they findany parents riding bicycles, they will be con-fiscated. “The project is meant to help thechildren, and make it easier for them to getan education, so we cannot allow the systemto be abused. We have already confiscated bi-cycles after finding adults riding them, so weappeal to the community to use the bicyclesas intended,” he said. After completing trai-ning on how to ride, and the rules of the roadfor cyclists to ensure the students’ safety, theywill receive the bikes, along with a helmet, pump and lock.

A Poem to NelsonA Poem to NelsonRolihlahlaMandelaRolihlahlaMandela

The past week has seen the entire worldin a somber mood following the pas-sing of the great man who was NelsonRolihlahla ‘Tata, Madiba’ Mandela. Many of us know the story behind

this icon and what we should remem-ber is what he taught us as a country.Madiba taught us to forgive, no mat-

ter what the circumstances; he said thatnot only is it good for the soul, but youend up free as well.

He taught us to accept all peoplefrom different walks of life, becausethe skin colour might be different, buteverything else is the same; to standup for what we believe in and fight forwhat is right and, lastly, to be humbleand not use power to belittle and mis-treat others. In his own words he said,“No one is born hating another

person because of the colour of hisskin, or his background, or his religi-on. People learn to hate, and if theycan learn to hate, they can be taughtto love, for love comes more naturallyto the human heart than its opposite.”When I pause and literally turn and

look back into our past history at this

momentous juncture of South Afri-can history, one is just amazed athow Madiba has conferred a magicof humanity that prevails to this day.It has not only captivated South Af-rica, but the entire human universe. Now that he is experiencing an af-

selflessness and dedication to good-ness of human spirit ‘TATA’ dedicatedhis whole life to.Upon facing the death penaltyMadi-

ba said,“During my lifetime I have dedica-

ted myself to this struggle of the Afri-can people.“I have fought against white domi-

nation, and I have fought againstblack domination.“I have cherished the ideal of a de-

mocratic and free society in which allpersons live together in harmony withequal opportunities.“It is an ideal which I hope to live

for and to see realised.“But if needs be, it is an ideal for

which I am prepared to die.” It is trulyand indeed an ideal he died for. Thanks to you and your comrades

for fighting for freedom. It has allowedmy generation to explore and experien-ce the endless opportunities availabletoday. May we draw from the peace, humility and spirit of forgivenesswhich you epitomised.Lala ngoxolo Tamkhulu, wena Ma-

As the nation mourns the passing ofMadiba, and many are reflecting on thelife and times of Nelson Mandela. I toohave quietly retreated to reflect and recallthe great man. I was fortunate to have beena mayor during his presidency. One of theoverriding themes of his term in officewasreconciliation, and I endeavoured to pro-mote that as best as I could duringmy termas mayor of the Lekoa-VaalMetro.We of-ten met at government events and manysocial and political occasions. I have sev-eral outstanding memories of encounterswith Madiba, all of them for very specialreasons. The immense contribution thatMadibamade in achieving and shaping thenature of South Africa’s political transi-tion is well documented. The historical

and global impact is chronicled in great detailby many experts in their fields. On 10 December 1996, when Mandela

came to sign the Constitution in Sharpeville,he was in a buoyant mood. It was indeed amemorable occasion. He was chirping withthe ladies in the mayor’s parlour in Vereenig-ing, as only Madiba could, full of wit and hu-mour. Then at the Sharpeville Stadium heread his prepared speech, but at the end tossedit aside and decided to deliver a speech fromthe heart. Once gain he urged reconciliationand cooperation between races. On 25 May 1999, he came to Vaal to re-

ceive the ‘Freedom of the Vaal’ at Kwa-Ma-siza Stadium.

He was more royalty than statesman. Hewas more a king than a president. I have iton good authority that in the company of

kings and queens, he addressed them as hisequals. These are but a few of many reflec-tions. I hope that in some way, it reminds usof the Mandela legacy and what it meant inreal, tangible terms.(This is an edited version of current Sed-

ibeng District Municipality Manager andformer Lekoa-Vaal Metro Mayor, YunusChamda’s edited letter on Nelson Mandela)

SEDIBENG. - Arguably South Africa’s grea-test soccer player Jomo Sono has described thelate NelsonMandela as equal to the great bibli-cal prophets. The former statesman passedaway last week and the country came to astandstill.

“I know some will consider this as profanebut it’s my honest opinion. This man was Afri-ca’s Jesus Christ,” said Sono of the late TataMandela. The former Orlando Pirates striker, popularly known as Trouble Maker during his

heyday, said Mandela might have been born ofan ordinary human being butGod sent thismanto free the African continent from bondage.“He did what Moses did for the Sons of Israelwhen he led them fromEgyptian slavery.WhatMandela did was a miracle. He was like thosegreat biblical prophets.“I feel blessed and asense of fulfilment for having lived during thetime of this extraordinary man. I shared a fewbreakfasts, lunches and dinners with him. Thisis a privilege enjoyed by the ‘chosen few’ andI am glad I was one of those few.”

Sono said that - unknown to most South Af-ricans - Madiba and the current SAFA Presi-dent Dr Danny Jordaan had appointed him tobe the national team coach in 2002 during theWorld Cup in Korea and Japan.

Sono, who is also Jomo Cosmos coach/ma-nager, is one of the few soccer icons who hadthe opportunity to meet this fallen giant onma-ny occasions.

It was, of course, Mandela who signed theSouth African constitution in Sharpeville’sGeorge Thabe Stadium in 1996.

Steeped deep in history, the Sedibengdistrict bears rich heritage of political

and historical significance. The area stillhas significant scars that remain pillars ofthe new South Africa.

The area was also the scene of awave of political upheavals in the mid-eighties, followed by the rent boycottsorganised by the Vaal Civic Organisation.By the end of the instability, more than150 people had been killed.

The people of Sedibeng say morecan be done to recognise the region’s sac-rifice, especially on the 21st March 1960,during the Anti-Pass demonstrations, po-lice opened fire, 69 people were killed and180 wounded in Sharpeville. BARRAGE. - “Thank you verymuch, Retha Venter, from the bot-tom of our hearts,” said the ruralcommunity of Barrage Smallhol-dings after they received food par-cels from the Vanderbijlpark seniorprosecutor.

Venter was accompanied by EllenLekgetho and Brenda Dangalazana, regional and district prosecutor res-pectively.

The community was invitedthrough the office of station com-mander Lieutenant Colonel Augusti-ne Malebo.

Families left the station laden withparcels.

They said this was a big surpriseahead of Christmas.

“We were not aware when we we-re invited that we would end up lea-ving the station with big smiles onour faces,” said one of the women.

According to Venter, the food wasbought through money collectedfrom community members who havecommitted themselves to act againstcrime:

“Instead of sending felons to jail, depending on their crime, we presen-ted the option to pay a fine.

The money will be used to buygroceries.” Prosecutor Venter saidthey would roll out the project tofeed the children in Boipatong a daybefore Christmas:

“The intention next year is to buyschool uniforms for needy childrenin the areas.” Venter was joined byGert van Vuuren, chairperson of theCommunity Policing Forum in Bar-rage

SASOLBURG. - The Vaal River Soccer Lea-gue was a huge success with all the power-houses from previous seasons changing posi-tions recently. The schools gave some excel-lent performances with some really excitingfootball being played by the likes of Phoenix,Suiderlig, Sasolburg High and Carel De Wet.Adidas and Toyota Sasolburg partook in thisday providing an excellent platform with thesponsoring of the Ladies Trophies (Toyota). The various age groups performed well andthe usual suspects for the ladies were GeneralSmuts vs Suiderlig in the Final. The Suiderligsquad performed very well and took the Finalwith a 3 -0 win over General Smuts. The u/15s had a high-flying PhoenixHigh Schoolmeetwith Carel De Wets u/15. It was a tight affairand the showpiece was defending from both

sides. With a tense encounter all it neededwasa goal. That goal eventually came in the se-cond half of the match for Carel De Wet. Ca-rel De Wet held on to the lead to win the final1 - 0.The u/17 final was a really exciting game

asGeneral Smuts, powerhouse of theVaal Ri-ver Soccer League, clashed with a first-timefinalist - Sasolburg High School. GeneralSmuts had aman sent off for a deliberate handball which foiled a goal-scoring opportunity.Sasol High slotted home the penalty and thentook control. Not to be counted out, General Smuts came

at Sasolburg High School but could not makeenough of clear-cut opportunities. SasolburgHigh School then created some Spectacularopportunities and finished the game off. Thefinal score was 5 - 2 with some outstanding

performances. The u/20 match up was bet-ween two powerhouses Carel Dewet and Sui-derlig. The Game was tight with Suiderligplaying the more attractive football. Defensi-vely sound Carel De Wet needed somethingextraordinary from their Captain to take thelead. A twenty-yard stunner which couldmake any footballer drop their jaws was thehighlight 20 minutes into the final. He wasat it again with another opportunity whichwas saved brilliantly. The game finished 3 -

0with Carel DeWet being crowned the seniorChampions. The new season starts in April2014 and we want to include all primaryschools from the ages of u/7 year olds tou/13s.The aim is to finalise and prepare for amee-

ting before the end of the year and we wouldlike all schools to join us in creating some-thing special for the future leagues. Vaal Ri-ver Soccer League falls under VYFD whichin full is Vaal Youth Football Development.

A lot has been said and written about thedeath of late statesman Nelson RolihlahlaMandela. This is the very samemanwho pla-yed a significant role in bringing the 2010World Cup to Africa for the first time whenSouth Africa hosted this world showpiece.I thought I was going to run on about the

success of the Safa Sedibeng teams, but Idecided to join the millions of South Afri-cans who pay homage to this great man. The-re is no word to describe him except EX-CELLENCE. Many of us have learned whatforgiveness means because of the humiliati-on this man was able to assimilate. The outstanding moment that Shooting

From The Hip remembers about Tata waswhen South Africa was granted the opportu-

nity to host the 2010 Fifa World Cup. It washis emotional speech that the world fell inlove with at South Africa FIFA Headquar-ters.This is the moment I will never forget in

my entire life. How can one forget the 1996African Cup of Nations? TheMadibaMagic! The man was more popular in sports thanin politics, taking into consideration the rolehe played for our national team to conquerthe world.Tata Madiba played a part in the transfor-

mation of sports in this country and one can’tjust ignore that. Shooting From The Hip justwonders what this country would be like ifwe hadn’t had such a great leader as TataMadiba. He inspired most of us, especially those

who had no hope for the future.I’m grateful for who I am because of this

man, because he indirectly played a role inmy life. Today I can face the world without

fear. My pride has nothing to do with arro-gance or achievement but the confidence theman instilled in me – FEAR NOT! For toolong, fear has prevented some of us from ta-king risks in life. The Bafana Bafana Class of ‘96 can attest

to this - how to conquer fear when they werecrowned the African Cup Champions. Selfbelief! Don’t forget – this is the man whospent 27 years in prison, yet came out andbecame president. He has run the race and it is now entirely

up to us to finish it. But we can’t do thisas long as our hearts are dominated by fear.

The reason most of us don’t succeed in lifeis because we want to be ‘people pleasers’but this was not the case with the old man.We will never realise our dreams if we

are ‘people pleasers’, which is the greatestchallenge in our football leadership. You askyourself - “Am I reading Shooting From TheHip or the TD Jakes book?” But yes, thisis your favourite weekly column ‘ShootingFrom The Hip.’ Robala ka kgotso Tata. Youhave run the race and it is up to us to finishit. On a lighter note, Shooting From The Hipwishes to thank Safa Sedibeng for appoin-ting Yours Truly to the regional u/15 team.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - News travelsfast! Sedibeng Ster Sports has learnedthat Tebello “Benza” Kheswa could beback as head coach of the VUT FC.The news reaching Sedibeng Ster

Sport is that VUTwill part wayswith cur-rent head coach Geelbooi ‘Goma’ Mas-ango after this former Vaal Professionaldefender spent two seasonswith the insti-tution’s soccer team.According to a source close to this de-

velopment, Kheswa tops the list of favou-rite candidates, taking into considerationwhat he achieved while he was still VUTDevelopment FC coach two years ago.He left VUT under a cloud after he wastold by the VUT Sports Department thatthe institution had done away with deve-lopment teams. Hewon the Super Leaguefor three consecutive seasons while hewas still at VUT. His achievements wereenough to convince VUTmanagement torecall this talented coach from Tshepiso,Sharpeville. To add more feathers to his cap, Khes-

wa also helped the institution’s soccerteam reach the finals of the USSA, whichhosted VUT. His CV speaks for itself alt-hough he remains humble and down-to-earth.To date, after hewas “shown the door”,

Kheswa went back to his original team

Tshepiso Barcelona FC before he joinedforces with Vaal Milano FC. He helpedthe club finish in a respectable positionon the Safa Sedibeng SAB League’s loglast season.Despite being a student of this beauti-

ful game, Kheswa has proven beyonddoubt that he has a great future ahead ofhim as far as coaching is concerned. When approached for comment Khes-

wa said he had no idea that he was a red-hot favourite candidate for VUT FC.Sedibeng Ster Sports has it on good

authority that VUT students are the onesthat suggested to management that Khes-wa be called back.Speaking to Sedibeng SterSports a stu-

dent who did not want to be named, said:“The management must swallow theirpride and recall Kheswa because the manhas achieved more than some of the coa-ches they hired in the past.

Kheswa himself says: “I had somegood times there and everyone was goodto me, but unfortunately I was told thatthey had gotten rid of development teamsand I had no choice but to leave. I wasdoing well there and the results were the-re for everyone to see,” says Kheswa. However, Kheswa did not dismiss any

possibility of going back to VUT thoughhe told Sedibeng Ster Sports that he iscommitted to Vaal Milano FC.

Good news for those who could notattend the workshop is that Nkumane says hewill organise another workshop to promotecontinuity.
