ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (EIA) FOR THE PROPOSED NEW VAAL COLLIERY (NVC) LIFE EXTENSION (LIFEX) PROJECTFINAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT REPORT AVAILABLE FOR COMMENT

The Eskom Lethabo Power Station needs a secure coal supply to keep operating until 2044. Anglo Operations (Pty) Ltd (AOL) can fulfil this requirement if the life of the existing New Vaal Colliery (NVC) is extended by 14 years. AOL proposes to extend its existing opencast mining operations by mining new coal reserves, which are located to the south of the existing NVC reserves, approximately 5 kilometres east of Sasolburg and 10 kilometres south of Vereeniging in the northern Free State Province. These new operations will include opencast and underground mining within the New Cornelia Block 1 and New Cornelia Vaalbank reserves respectively. AOL proposes to blend coal from their existing operation with coal from the proposed new operations and supply this coal to the Lethabo Power Station in order for it to continue generating electricity. The life extension project is known as the NVC Lifex Project.

EIA PROCESSThe EIA process commenced in 2010 in terms of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA), Act 28 of 2002 and the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA), Act 107 of 1998, as amended. Thus, a parallel environmental authorisation process is being followed, involving the regional Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) and the Free State Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DETEA). An Environmental Management Programme Report (EMPR) amendment in terms of MPRDA, based on the findings of the EIA, a waste management licence in terms of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (NEMWA), Act 59 of 2008, and an Integrated Water Use License Application in terms of the National Water Act (NWA), Act No. 36 of 1998, also form part of this process.

This sensational young golfer started to

play this sport at an early age and is destinedto become a household name in South Afri-can golf.

The young man started playing golf at theyoung age of six and he was named the best

golfer at Oospark Primary School in Vander-bijlpark. Sekese became first in the top tenduring the Glacier Tours for kids aroundSouth Africa. To add more feathers to hiscap, at the age of 16 he won the junior leagueof all high schools in Sedibeng.

He is currently the captain of the golf juni-or team in Riverval Golf Club in Vereeni-ging. According to Sekese he recently wentto Germany for the Junior World Golf OpenTournament at Hoofburg Country Club andwas top five among 17 countries that tookpart in the tournament.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Sekesesaid his ambition is to turn professional inthe next two years. He has no doubt that hecan achieve his milestone if he gets a perso-nal sponsorship:

Im happy with my progress but my big-gest dream is to turn professional and I knowthat, with the support I get from people whoare close to me, I will achieve this.

There are people who are pushing me ve-ry hard and Im grateful to have those peoplein my life because they want the best forme.

The games were held at the George Tha-be Stadium in Sharpeville over the wee-kend.

This tournament was organised by theYB20 Organisation in conjunction withthe Emfuleni Local Municipality in sup-

port of sports in the area. The sporting codesthat form part the tournament were soccer andnetball. Celta Vigo Dev FC and VUT netballteam were crowned the 2015 Emfuleni YB20Tournament champions.

Celta Vigo Dev FC achieved this after theybeat Vaal Milano 2 - 0 in the final, while theVUT netball team clinched victory by beatingVictorious Netball Club 16 - 10. Both teamsreceived gold medals and playing kits for

their effort.Bukilwe Nukelo from VUT netball team

was named the player of the tournament inthe netball category, while Katleho Makha-nya from Celta Vigo Dev FC was namedplayer of the tournament in the soccer secti-on.
