FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT FROM THE DESK OF

FR. SERGIO OVANDO, PASTOR….

For our salvation is nearer

The season of Advent gives us an opportunity to reflect about our salvation and to consider that, in the same way that Christmas is near, so is the salvation that flows from the Birth of the Lord. The spiritual preparation for Jesus’ coming should be our first priority this season, a four- week period during which we wait for the com-ing of the Messiah. Our waiting should be a time of meditation and hope, considering that the whole world prepares itself to receive the prom-ised salvation. Saint Paul announces that our salvation is near. As he does so, the Apostle proposes to us a new beginning, a new opportunity to correct our course toward our Savior. If you are unsure how to prepare for Christmas or how to live this season, look to Mary: she waits. The model of spiritual disposition of this way of being and journeying in life is the Virgin Mary. A simple girl from the country who carried within her heart the fullness of hope in God! In her whom God’s hope took flesh and became man, it became history: Jesus Christ (Pope Francis, Horizon of Hope). In our time, as in times past, people have hope; we hope that things will change in the world, that all will treat one another fairly and serve each other as brothers and sisters. We hope for many things, yet we do not always understand that all of our hopes can be summed up in this one great hope: Jesus. Therefore, we should not just wait for Christmas, but also prepare for the coming of the Feast. Advent is the “Season of Hope,” as we draw closer each day to our encounter with Jesus. Let us use our time wisely. Why? Because our salvation is nearer now than when we first be-lieved. Every year, we have a new opportunity to cele-brate and to prepare ourselves to embrace Je-sus more and more into our lives, to discover him again, as we begin this new Advent

STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE by Deacon Rick Haeckel

Last week we celebrated Jesus as Lord of the Universe. Today we begin Advent, a preparation for the birth of our Savior. This Church year we read from the Gospel of Matthew, thought for many years to have been the first Gospel written but modern biblical scholars now believe that Mark was probably the first. (So much for introduction :-). Today’s readings seek to warn us to prepare for the coming of the Son of Man. This is the second coming, we will soon celebrate the birth of Jesus but now we are asked to remember that we must, “Stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.” Matthew’s warnings arise from one of the most common of human traits - procrastination. We all know that to be Christian means not just to believe in Jesus as our Lord but also to act in ways that demonstrate what it means to be Christ for one another. We need both aspects of our faith, knowledge and action, but the temptation is great to put off consideration of the end times… both ours and that of the universe. We certainly don’t want to be morbidly worried or anxious about these events. No, we need them to remind us that our individual lives are often lived with a focus that is too narrow, namely just ourselves. Over and over we discover, to our amazement, that when our actions are directed in ways which imitate Jesus, we receive a peace that the world cannot give. The light of Christ, which when we “see” it, can be blinding. Especially when we’ve been preoccupied with our own needs. But the blindness is to be temporary, it is meant to illuminate the path forward, no matter how limited the view seems. Even the smallest illumination, which arises from our conscious awareness of Jesus’ call, gives us what we need to grow in faith, to offer ourselves in service. Not to build up or collect “bonus” points, no, when that happens it means we’ve taken our eyes away from the light. On the other hand, care for one another in the world leads us to be looking outward, enabling us to see that it isn’t any particular sense of accomplishment we receive, rather its an attitude of Christian love that rests in our inmost being, giving light in a world often in apparent darkness. Our call is to become contributors to the collective care that all peoples are to have for one another. It’s often hard because there are so many demands for our attention, most of which distract us. The season of Advent is particularly helpful for us. It reminds us that Jesus came that we might have life, life in the fullness of his grace. Consider using a talisman this season, a small physical reminder that when touched remids us that we belong to Jesus. It can be anything that refocuses us… in love.

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK What’s in your garage? Because we’ve stored some-things “just in case” causes clutter. Things we don’t use can be recycled and repurposed. Pass them along, soon you’ll find the path to the car easier :-).

DIEGO’S RETREAT ALERT!

The Echoes of Worth Retreat is based on the teachings of Saint John Paul II's Theol-ogy of the Body (TOB) teachings during his Wednesday audiences. The word 'echo' reminds us of when God breathed life into Adam and Eve, and subsequently into each one of us during concep on. The 'echo' acts as a constant reminder that we are made in the image and likeness of God. As such, we must con nue to 'echo' God's image and likeness to those around us. In doing so, they can recognize our worth as well as their own! DURING THIS FAITH AND FUN FILLED WEEKEND, EACH TEENAGER WILL HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO ENCOUNTER CHRIST IN NEW WAYS THROUGH: MASS, KEYNOTES TALKS BY GUEST SPEAKERS, PRAISE AND WORSHIP, ADORATION, ACTIVITIES, SMALL GROUPS, RECONCILIATION, NEW FRIENDS, WORKSHOPS, RECREATION TIME AND SKITS. For more informa on or to register visit www.echoesofworth.com

This Sunday, we begin the season of Advent, a time to wait and prepare for the com-ing of Jesus. How can we actively wait in our homes and within our families? It is watchful waiting, waiting with expectation, ready and pre-pared. We know that Jesus will come again in glory - we do not know when, but we

can be ready for the day of the Lord. Following are several ways that families, the domestic church, can reflect this Advent season: Watch Look for ways that Jesus is already present and at work in our daily lives. How can we recognize and welcome the presence of Jesus even more fully? Serve Be the hands of Jesus in our community. Serve oth-ers through the various parish activities including the Giving Tree Project on December 15th and the Knights of Columbus Reverse Christmas Party on December 17th. Pray Advent family prayers and rituals are wonderful ways to express our faith during the season. Pray together as a family around the family Advent Wreath. Share a Christmas Tree blessing prayer. Make a family prayer cloth and Advent wreath at our Advent Family Reflections during Faith Formation sessions on Wednesday, December 4th, Sunday, December 8th and Saturday, December 14th. Pick up one of the Advent devotional prayer books in the church vestibule. FORMED Sign up for Advent reflections on www.formed.org/advent or www.formed.org/adviento. Doing without things that most of us take for grant-ed is a way of life for some families in our commu-nity. Some children cannot go to social events, ex-pect certain toys for Christmas or their birthday, or even have a Christmas tree because their families cannot afford these expenses. Fortunately, the families of St. Catherine Parish have the Parish Giving Tree / Adopt A Family Christmas Program to help make the dreams of their children come true... On your star, there will be information about an Adult or Child, Female/Girl or Male/Boy, clothing size, and or toys. The stars are located on the Giv-ing Trees in the Church. We ask that you take a star or two, purchase the gift listed on the star, wrap the gift and return it to the Parish Office by Friday, December 6th. Don't have time to shop and would like us to do the shopping? Monetary dona-tion can be made on our website or at the Parish Office. If you are interested in adopting a family, please contact Anna Quinones or Maria Dominguez. [email protected] [email protected]

The money raised from this event helps fund ceiling replacement in the classrooms which enhances the energy efficien-cy of heating and cooling the rooms, as well as improving acoustics. This is also a great oppor-tunity to get parent hours or student service hours. Contact Karina Salinas at [email protected] .

ART IN ACTION

For the past ten years, St. Catherine School has used a fabulous art pro-gram, Art in Action. Art in Action fo-cuses on art concepts in conjunction with their correlation to common core standards. This program is both teacher and student friend-ly. Students learn about art concepts such as color, lines, and perspective in an historical con-text. Teachers have online training available for each project. Student art is displayed regularly in the school hallways and classrooms.
