THE VALUE OF EDUCATION

What greater or better gift can we offer the re-public than to teach and instruct our youth?

TWENTY - THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FROM THE DESK OF

FABIENNE ESPARZA, SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

DIOCESAN SECOND COLLECTION FOR CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

This weekend all parishes in the Diocese of San Jose are taking a second collection for scholar-ships for Catholic schools. Our diocese has 26 Catholic elementary schools and six Catholic high schools each of which strives to provide not only an excellent academic education, but also more importantly, a strong foundation in our Catholic faith. As we heard in today’s gospel, we must plan for the future, but we must also put our full trust in God. While we plan for the sustainability of our schools, we must also trust that we will be able to serve those who come to us. Many of our families can afford the cost of tuition for a Cath-olic school, but many cannot. The second col-lection today will provide funds for tuition assis-tance to those for whom paying a full tuition is simply not possible. In addition to a strong grounding in Christian values, studies have shown that Catholic schools graduates are more highly engaged in their communities, more tolerant of diverse views and more committed to service as adults. Along with high academic rigor, Catholic schools promote personal responsibility in safe and nurturing environments. They also encour-age family involvement, which models that par-ents are the first educators of their children. The financial management of a Catholic school requires a delicate balance. We must pay em-ployees a just wage, provide the necessary re-sources students and teachers need while keeping tuition affordable for as many as possi-ble. It is not an easy task. Can you help with this ministry? Whether you contribute directly to the Catholic school of your choice or to the col-lection today, your support is greatly appreciat-ed. Please know that at St. Catherine School our students and staff regularly pray for all our benefactors. God bless you!

STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE by Deacon Rick Haeckel

Discipline, a word which gets our attention. It can mean being well schooled in a particular discipline. It can also mean being corrected, being asked to improve our behavior or understanding of how to deal with others. Today’s readings contain both aspects of what discipline asks of us. In the reading from Wisdom we hear, “Who can know God’s counsel, or who can conceive what the Lord intends?” and “Or who ever knew your counsel, except you had given wisdom and sent your holy spirit from on high?” In one sense we are being taught that it is by God’s gift that we achieve an understanding of God’s will for us. We are reminded that even though we are autonomous we know of God’s care for us through the gift of God’s Spirit. We are invited to “learn” the discipline of God’s care and call for us. We are corrected, reminded that behavior that does not follow from God’s love needs to be improved. In the Gospel we hear Jesus speaking about the discipline we must have if we are to be his disciples. No relationship, not even family, can stand in the way of living with Jesus as the center of our life. The words he uses seem harsh, “If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and … cannot be my disciple.” Well that certainly gets our attention, is Jesus asking that we dislike our relatives? Not in the sense we may think, it isn’t the personal meaning of hate but instead where we place our priority. We “hate” the fact that so many things distract us from the discipline of following Jesus in all things. Being his disciple means we are to live and love as he did. Remember that Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem and his saving passion. There isn’t much time left and he must be crystal clear about what being his disciple means in concrete terms. The difficult tone is not meant to drive anyone away, but instead to accept the discipline, difficult as it may be, needed to be his disciple. Have you noticed that the word disciple and discipline are connected? We who follow Jesus are called to be his disciples, which in a more literal sense means not only a follower but actually a student. This aspect of the meaning is important as it includes both senses of discipline spoken of above. In a larger sense it also allows us room to grow in our ability to follow Jesus. A student continues to learn from a teacher, growing more able to understand the topic. We are invited to the realization that our understanding of Jesus and his call for us continues to develop as we mature… in body and mind. In the words of a favorite bumper sticker, “Be patient, God isn’t finished with me yet.”

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK It seems counterintuitive, but email helps us to be green. Electronic mail can’t replace all paper mail but it does help preserve the trees so essential to our planet; they absorb carbon and do much more.

ATTENTION: We thank the advertisers on our bulletin. It is their support that allows us to receive our bulletin from JS Paluch at no cost. If you have a business and would like to advertise please call 1-800-231-0805.

DESDE EL ESCRITORIO DEL FABIENNE ESPARZA, DIRECTOR ESCO-

LAR….

Diocese of San Jose - Prayer for Vocations Heavenly Father,

Your divine Son taught us to pray to the Lord of the harvest

to send laborers into His vineyard. We earnestly beg You

to bless our parish, our school, and our Diocese with many more priests and religious

who will know You intimately, love You fervently, and serve You joyfully

through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Continuously call our young people to a living encounter with Your Son

in the Word and Eucharist, that they might be made worthy ministers

of your Holy Catholic Church. Strengthen them with the support of their parents,

teachers, and friends on earth and all the angels and saints in heaven.

May the ever Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, intercede for us

that we might listen to the Word and act on it. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The weekend of the 7th and 8th of September we begin the Culture of Vocations ministry as a parish here at St. Catherine’s. As part of Bishop Oscar Cantu’s 25th Anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood of Jesus Christ he has asked us to pray for vocations. Bishop Cantu believes that this minis-try begins at home with the families. We received wooden crucifixes that we will have for each one of our weekend masses. Each week, a different family may take the crucifix home, and together as family pray for the whole week so that the hearts of young-er generations may be open to the call to consecrat-ed life. We will have a sign up for families that would like to take the crucifix home each week.

2019-20 Catechists

Catechists recently had a half day session to reflect on the theme, “All Are Called to Act with Justice.” The theme is the same as St. Catherine School’s to integrate teachings of justice and mercy in our ses-sions with children in Faith Formation. THANK YOU all catechists who have responded to the call to pass on the faith to our parish families! Please keep them in your prayers in the upcoming year! Would you like to grow in your faith and share that journey with young people? Are you being called to share in this vocation? Volunteer Opportunities are still available as Catechists and Catechist Aides. For further information, please call Rose at (408) 779-9604.

PRAYER FOR CATECHISTS

Loving God, in your goodness you send us cate-chists who nurture the seeds of faith that grow within us all. Help them draw closer to you through prayer and the sacraments. Guide them in their study of

Sacred Scripture and Tradition. Bless them with an apostolic zeal so that they may introduce others to

your son, Jesus Christ. Strengthen them so that they may be spirited witnesses to Christian Holiness. Be

with them always, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.. Amen.

“Unplanned” The Movie

Saturday, Oct. 19, at 7:00pm in the

O’Donnell Paish Center

Saint Catherine of Alexandria is hosting a FREE ad-mission of the movie “Unplanned.” Unplanned is an inspiring true story of one woman’s journey of transfor-mation. Planned Parenthood Director to pro-life activ-ist. Her passion surrounding a woman’s right to choose even led her to become a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood, fighting to enact legislation for the cause she so deeply believed in. Until the day she saw something that changed every-thing, leading Abby Johnson to join her former enemies at 40 Days For Life and become one of the most ar-dent pro-life speakers in America.

COMMUNITY CLOSET The Community Closet of St. Catherine Church is looking for a new home. We are an outreach ministry that provides clothing and household goods to the needy in our area, and are asking the community for ideas in relocating, either to storage or to a facility in which to serve our cli-ents. This property must be in good repair, com-pliant with local regulations AND free (or almost free) of charge. If you or someone you know may be able to help, please contact Debbie Molyneaux at (408) 500-5659. Thank you for your prayerful consideration!

SECOND COLLECTION - SEPTEMBER 14/15 Information about the

Diocese of Ciudad Guayana Our Diocese of Ciudad Guayana was created by Pope St. John Paul II on August 2, 1979, by means of the pontifical letter “Cum Nos Domini Nostri Mandato”. Our diocese is located in Southern Venezuela in the state of Bolivar. The diocese is 33,303 square miles (53,596 Km2) with a population of approximately 1,093,942 per-sons, 90% of whom are Catholic. The majority of the population of Venezuela resides in the northeastern part of the country; the same is true of our diocese where most of the population is situated in the northeastern part of the diocese and is made-up of professionals, technical specialists, blue collar workers, miners, indigenous and rural farmers. We also have many immigrants who come to illicitly mine gold, steel and other minerals as well as hoping to find steady em-ployment in the aluminum and steel plants. The diocese has 32 priests serving 39 parishes. It is important to highlight that one of our parishes is the Indigenous par-ish of Our Lady of Coromoto, comprised of various in-digenous communities of primarily Pemon ethnicity. These indigenous communities are distributed along the Cuyuni River and others further inland. The most isolat-ed community requires four hours by boat when the river is low and longer during the rainy season. Our diocese has limited financial resources and for this reason we are turning to you for your prayers and help in our pastoral care. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

DIOCESAN COLLECTION FOR CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

Each September the Diocese of San Jose spon-sors a second collection to support Catholic ed-ucation. This event provides a wonderful oppor-tunity to share the good news of this minis-try. Within our schools educators touch the very hearts of those they serve, nurturing communion with Christ and one another. They foster a love of learning, a deep sense of compassion, and a commitment to service. They give our children the lens not only to navigate the world but the ability to truly change the ending. In this way Catholic schools are at the very heart of the Church, a critical ministry within our parish-es. This weekend we invite all parishioners throughout the Diocese to join together in sup-port of Catholic education.
