From Fr. Dan, Pastor

Dear Friends, Rosemary Seibold has been a fantastic and A+ member of the staff. With Rosemary’s retirement on May 31, 2020 (see the longer note below), we will be losing a longtime and outstanding Pastoral Associate, Director of Religious Education, and friend. Rosemary both knows and loves our parishes and the people. We are going to miss her so much! At the same time, Rosemary’s ministry give us confidence as we approach the future, because the heart of what she has done has been to call people and organizations to share in the ministry she has done so well, so that the great work she has undertaken will continue on. We are also consoled in knowing that Rosemary will stay in touch. We will certainly be setting up occasions to say THANK YOU to Rosemary for her Christ-like ministry. It is an honor to have you with us. We are so glad to welcome you to Mass. Your presence warms our hearts. Please join me in donating to the Catholic Appeal. March 14 and 15 are the special days to do this. The appeal helps the poor, passes on the faith, and helps train future priests and lay ministers - and so much more.

“I am deeply loved by Jesus Christ and I have done nothing to earn it or deserve it.” Doing something for Lent is a terrific and helpful Catholic tradition. If you have already begun – keep up the good work. If you have not started yet, it is definitely not too late to begin. I am glad to be back! The February 12 brain aneurysm procedure was a complete success. With the permission of my medical team, I resumed saying the 9AM weekday Mass on February 24, and I returned to full-time ministry on Friday, March 6. I missed seeing you all. Thank you for your prayers, kind words, and cards. Thanks to the staff and all who volunteer for picking up the extra work during my recovery. It is good to be home! Sports: Is Jayson Tatum of the Celtics the next Boston Superstar? The Bruins have the best record in the NHL! Despite losing Mookie, the Sox have a shot at the wild-card and are starting to build a farm system. Stay, Tom Brady, stay! Never count out Brady & Belichick.

Love & God Bless You, Fr. Dan

New & Ongoing in Our Community

March 8 ~ Second Sunday of Lent Today’s gospel presents the familiar story of the transfiguration. Peter, James, and John were awestruck by the appearance of Jesus and by the words that the voice of God spoke: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” Listen to Him. This message is for us. Pray for the grace to be open to God’s word, to be transfigured into a courageous messenger of God’s love.

2020 Catholic Appeal Next weekend, the Catholic Appeal will be launched in all parishes throughout the Archdiocese. In preparation, we invite you to prayerfully consider making a generous gift that will benefit both our Collaborative and the many ministries that serve the 283 parishes, 110 schools, and 144 communities throughout the Archdiocese. Please take a moment today to look through the Catholic Appeal insert to learn more about the meaningful impact your gift will have. This is our Church, and when you support the Appeal, you support us. To learn more about the Catholic Appeal, or to make your gift online, please visit the new Appeal website at bostoncatholicappeal.org, where you can also view the 2020 Catholic Appeal video.

Celebrating the Sacraments of Initiation We invite you to pray for those who will be receiving the Sacraments of Initiation this Easter in our Collaborative! The following people celebrated the Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross last Sunday, March 1: Brian Piscitello and Jason Reyes are preparing for the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Christine Pelrine and Marcela Nicola Reyes are already baptized Christians and will be received fully into the Catholic Church. As they now enter Lent and the period of Purification and Enlightenment—the most intensive part of their formation journeys, your prayers are most welcome!

Friday Coffee Hour after 9:00am Mass There’s always room at the table! Perhaps you didn’t know that Sacred Heart hosts a coffee hour following the 9:00am mass on most Fridays from September through June. It’s a casual time of food and fellowship for people of all ages. You’re welcome to

Flu Season and the Sign of Peace During this ongoing flu season, everyone should feel free to bow or wave at the Sign of Peace, in place of shaking hands.

- Fr. Dan and the Pastoral Staff

A Note from Rosemary Seibold Dear Friends, As the song says, “I’m so glad we’ve had this time together...” March is a big month in my family - four of the five of us have birthdays. This year, my husband Michael is turning 70 and I am turning 67. For this and numerous other reasons, I want to share with you that I will be retiring and leaving the Collabora-tive at the end of May.

The 16 years I have ministered here have been a real joy for me, and you have truly been a gift to me. It has also been an honor to work with our talented and caring staff members over the years. Most days, I turn into the parking lot at Our Lady’s and say a prayer of thanks to God for this community. When I came here, I was looking for a different way to be Church and for a way to deepen my own faith, while sharing that faith and love of God with others. Both have been realized.

I will miss you all a great deal, but I am very much at peace with this decision. It is wise that I take some time away from ministry. I have to address my back problem, among other things. But I assure you that I hope to continue some connection to the parish and collaborative in the future; I will have to see what the Lord has in mind. Thank you, again, for being such a shining light of Jesus’ love to me and to the world, as you live the Gospel every day. May God shower many blessings on you in the days to come.

Thank you! Rosemary

Volunteers Needed for Our Monthly Mass for the Sick Ministry

Would you like to volunteer a few hours of your time one evening per month to a very rewarding Ministry here in the Sacred Heart & Our Lady’s Collaborative? Our Monthly Mass for the Sick started six years ago with a mission to bring comfort and hope to those struggling with illness. We have grown into a wonderful group of 20+ people who come to Our Lady’s once a month for respite and community through Mass, Anointing of the Sick, inspiring talks, and joyous entertainment.

Our ministry team needs someone who can help out on the fourth Monday of every month, to assist the priest during Mass with readings, anointing services and Communion. We also need people to help set up and decorate our tables ahead of time, make coffee, and/or bring some desserts and healthy snacks to share.

For more information, please contact Pat Enright at 202-531-3029 or at [email protected]. You can also contact Rosemary Seibold in the office at 617-527-7560 ext. 213 or [email protected]. Thank you!

Have You Lost Someone You Love? Grief Support Workshop

Join us for an 8-week grief support workshop this spring, titled “Living with Grief”. The death of a loved one is unlike any other. Whether the death was sudden and tragic or one with warning and preparation, the reality of death leaves most of us shocked, confused, and sad. These feelings may last for years. Grieving people need time and space to honor their grief. Your loss may be recent, or it may have been years ago. We have developed a

program to help you and yours start the healing process. This group will begin Sunday, March 29, and run through Memorial Day weekend. The group will meet Sundays from 11:30am-12:30pm at Our Lady’s. Advanced registration is required. For more information or to register, please contact Kate Neal at 617-527-7560 x219 or [email protected].

Fr. John Sassani—Homily Given on February 17, 2008 Second Sunday of Lent—Liturgical Year A

Homily reflections are also available each week online at www.sholnewton.org/godeeper. Photo Album will return in future bulletins. In the meantime, visit us on Instagram @sholnewton

My second oldest nephew Michael is now serving in the United States Air Force. He is a wonderful young man, but, when he was in high school, it was not always able to be seen. He often wore a t-shirt, ripped and frayed jeans, untied work boots, and two days of a beard. I went home to visit one night, and Michael was not joining us for dinner. He was about to leave the house in a collared shirt, slacks, shoes, and with a clean-shaven face. “What happened to you?” I asked. “Whaddaya mean?” he replied. I turned to his sister, my niece, who told me he had a girlfriend now. The young woman, whoever she was, had a profound effect on him, and it was noticeable.

The ongoing relationship between God the Father and Jesus his Son was constant and sustained, but now Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem for the last time. He goes with Peter, James, and John to pray. While praying, the Father’s love overwhelms Jesus – he’s visibly changed – he’s radiant – the radiance of love. The Father speaks: This is my son. Listen to him.

The disciples have seen the miracles, have witnessed the healings, have heard the preaching, and they were

drawn to Christ as a great rabbi – but nothing prepared them for this. It’s a glimpse of the Resurrection, of Christ’s new life and of their new life in him.

As he was transfigured, they would be transformed by his love: on the cross, in the new life of the Resurrection, and with the power of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. What they couldn’t tell coming down the mountain they can’t keep from telling after the Resurrection: that Jesus is the Lord, that he’s robbed sin and death of its power and given us new life and a destiny.

Vital spirituality is a goal for our parish, a spirituality rooted in the vitality of Christ, grounded in listening to his Word. Lent is a time to grow in the love of Christ through the Word. This Lenten season, we offer to you a booklet called Pray with Our Lady’s to encourage this, especially to consider the Gospel, so his radiant vitality lifts our spirits and prepares us to tell the vision of new life to others.

As we gather for the Eucharist today and every Sunday and as we hear the Word, Christ is transfigured in Bread and Wine so that he can transform us into his Body to draw others into the love of God through us.

Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty,

my memory, my understanding, and my entire will,

all I have and call my own. You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it.

Everything is yours; do with it what you will.

Give me only your love and your grace; that is enough for me.

-The Suscipe Prayer of St. Ignatius Loyola

This prayer, which is found in St. Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises, was deeply meaningful to Fr. John. He led peo-ple through the Spiritual Exercises many times during his priestly ministry, and the words of the prayer became even more poignant in his illness.

As April 21 approaches, the Pastoral Staff invites you to participate in several opportunities to honor Fr. John’s memory and to celebrate his legacy on the first anniversary of his passing to eternal life.

First, we invite the entire Collaborative to join us on Sunday, April 19, at 10:00am at Our Lady’s for a special Mass of remembrance for Fr. John. Following Mass, a reception will be held in the Lower Hall.

We also now announce plans for several projects to create permanent memorials to Fr. John at each parish.

At Sacred Heart, we will be adding Fr. John’s portrait to the pastors’ wall in the parish office, and we are planning for an installation of the Suscipe prayer in the Grotto behind the convent.

At Our Lady’s, we will be installing a new marble slab in the Lower Hall with Fr. John’s name and dates of pastorship, adding to the existing memorial there. We are also planning to refurbish the Reconciliation Chapel in Fr. John’s memory, in order to make it a more prayerful space; it will include the Suscipe prayer.

We are seeking your financial support to make these memorial plans a reality. If you would like to contribute, please make checks payable to either “Sacred Heart” or “Our Lady’s” with “Fr. John” written in the memo line. All contributions are tax-deductible. Any funds donated in excess of the projects’ costs will be earmarked for the continued beautification and upkeep of these two parishes that Fr. John loved so deeply and served so faithfully.

We are grateful for your ongoing love for Fr. John and we thank you in advance for your generosity towards these projects. If you have any questions, please contact Kristina at [email protected] or 617-527-7560 ext.216.

Care for Creation: Abstaining from Meat Is Good for the Planet, too!

Now that you've changed your light bulbs, why not consider changing your lunch? Make combating climate change a Lenten practice by reducing or eliminating your meat consumption for Lent! Meat and dairy, particularly from cows, have an outsize impact on carbon emissions, with livestock accounting for around 14.5% of the world’s greenhouse gases each year. That’s roughly the same amount as the emissions from all the cars, trucks, airplanes, and ships combined in the world today! Perhaps, besides Fridays, we could add more days of abstaining from meat to our personal Lenten practice as a way to love God, ourselves, our neighbors, and our Earth.

This Lent, Give Hope to Honduras! One of the ways we support our sister parish in Honduras is with our Lenten campaign to support their parish scholarship program. Since 2011, we’ve supported the parishioners in San Marcos in lifting up the poorest young children and teenagers there, so their families can afford necessities for school like shoes, books and supplies, transportation, and even food. Each week during Lent in the bulletin, we will share a few of the students’ letters, written to thank you. Here are the first:

“Thank you for the help you offer to me and to others. Thanks to you I have a better life with my mother. I have clothes to wear, and food to grow strong and healthy. I tell you that this year I am going to study in the ‘Instituto Gubernamental San Marcos’ and I am going to seventh grade. I am very excited because my dream has always been to study to be a veterinarian because I love pets, especially dogs and cats.” - Luzdary Yakelin

“Thank you, brothers from the Boston-San Marcos parishes, for your valuable help, with it I can buy the materials I need for the school, meaning a relief for my parents since we are a family with limited resources. GOD of the universe bless you and keep you, my gratefulness always.” -Yarixa Yamileth Orellana Melgar

New to our Collaborative? Welcome! Please introduce yourself after Mass or at the parish offices. We want to know and serve you! We hope you will participate in our parishes with your prayers, presence, talents, and stewardship accord-ing to your means.

Pastoral Care of the Sick: We are most eager to help any-one who cannot celebrate Mass with us in church. If you or a loved one wishes to receive the Sacraments of the Anointing of the Sick, Eucharist, or Reconciliation, please call the par-ish offices. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is celebrated after all parish Masses on the first full weekend of each month. Please also notify us of hospitalizations, so that we may be of help.

Sacraments of Initiation: For adults interested in Baptism, Confirmation, or joining the Catholic Church, please contact Nick Frega; for high school Confirmation, contact Michelle

Solomon at Sacred Heart or Kristina Preman at Our Lady's; for older children to be baptized or to receive Holy Commun-ion, contact Michelle Solomon at Sacred Heart or Rosemary Seibold at Our Lady's.

Infant Baptisms: Infant Baptisms are celebrated at Mass or on special Sundays throughout the year. Parents are asked to call the parish office to begin the process. A program of prep-aration is offered to all parents. For more information, please visit our website.

Sacrament of Marriage: Please contact the parish offices at least 6 months in advance. A preparation program is offered to all couples. For more information, please visit our website.
