From Fr. Dan, Pastor

Dear Friends,

Jesus is risen! Happy Easter! Alleluia! Let us rejoice and be glad, Alleluia! Christ is risen! By Jesus’ resurrection, eternal life has conquered death, light conquers darkness, and love triumphs. Jesus is alive and holds our hand tenderly as we walk through life. He loves us warmly. He is always there for us. He invites us to share this good news!

We have been constantly thinking about you and praying for you during this trying time. I am proud of how each of you is in some way joined in the fight against this pandemic: some as frontline healthcare providers, and all of you as family members and friends caring for people around you. My heart and gratitude go out to you.

“When we go looking for Jesus, we discover he is already seeking us. He is always ahead of us, he's waiting for us in order to receive us in his heart, in his love, into his tender embrace. He gives us joy and takes us on life's journey like a child, by our hand.” (Pope Francis)

My heartfelt compassion to all afflicted by Covid-19: those who have the virus, those who have been hurt economically, those feeling lonely and to everyone. More importantly, Jesus feels for you and is always helping you.

Combatting Covid by “doing small things with great love.” (Mother Theresa). There is no denying the hardships and suffering that have descended, and more is to come. Others need our love in the small things, like offering to pick up a few extra groceries for a shut-in or calling someone living alone. It’s about being patient with each other and resisting the urge to hoard at the grocery store, etc.

“Live and let live” is so wise. When cooped up together, whether it is on a long vacation or being confined with the same people under one roof due to Covid-19, the stress can tempt us to try and fix each other. Resist the temptation. Live and let live. Avoid giving unsolicited advice. Be quick to give compliments and express appreciation.

The Happiness Lab is an awesome podcast! Professor Diane Santos is putting out special episodes for this crisis time. She shares research tested happiness strategies.

Love & Happy Easter! Fr. Dan

Current Information All daily and Sunday Masses and religious services are suspended until further notice. In announcing this, Cardinal Sean also has issued a dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass.

Funeral liturgies are suspended, with the exception of graveside committal services that allow for proper dis-tance. Other liturgical celebrations (like baptisms and weddings) may proceed but only with immediate family.

The Sacrament of Confession offered on Saturdays is suspended. Our churches are currently closed to the pub-lic, following the governor’s stay-at-home advisory an-nounced on March 23. If anything changes, we will let you know. Check www.sholnewton.org/covid-19 for the latest.

The parish offices are closed as of March 17, but the staff is available to you by phone and email.

Outreach to the Most Vulnerable Many people have acted with great generosity of spirit in asking how we can care for our neighbors most in need during this time. A Note from Rosemary Seibold Dear Friends, As the song says, “I’m so glad we’ve had this time together...” March is a big month in my family - four of the five of us have birthdays. This year, my husband Michael turned 70 and I turned 67. For this and numerous other reasons, I want to share with you that I will be retiring and leaving the Collaborative at the end of May.

The 16 years I have ministered here have been a real joy for me, and you have truly been a gift to me. It has also been an honor to work with our talented and caring staff members over the years. Most days, I turn into the parking lot at Our Lady’s and say a prayer of thanks to God for this community. When I came here, I was looking for a different way to be Church and for a way to deepen my own faith, while sharing that faith and love of God with others. Both have been realized.

I will miss you all a great deal, but I am very much at peace with this decision. It is wise that I take some time away from ministry. I have to address my back problem, among other things. But I assure you that I hope to continue some connection to the parish and collaborative in the future; I will have to see what the Lord has in mind. Thank you, again, for being such a shining light of Jesus’ love to me and to the world, as you live the Gospel every day. May God shower many blessings on you in the days to come. Thank you! Rosemary

New & Ongoing in Our Community

A Note on Fr. Kevin’s Assignment

Friends,

I regret to share with you that we have a big loss for us, and a huge gain for the Boston University Catholic Center. To quote from the official announcement from the Office of Clergy Per-sonnel: “Cardinal Sean has appointed Fr. Kevin Staley-Joyce as Director of the Catholic Center and as Priest-Campus Minister at Boston University in Boston. The effective date of this action will be June 1, 2020.” As this new assignment is full-time, Fr. Kevin will no longer be assigned here as of the same date, June 1.

I have been delighted with Fr. Kevin in every way. His priestly ministry and his companionship in the rectory with myself and Fr. Dennis has been such a blessing. Fr. Kevin is brilliant, de-vout, hardworking, considerate, and so much more. One consola-tion for me is that I would rather have had an excellent parochial vicar like Fr. Kevin for a short time, than a mediocre one for a long time. When you have someone great, like Fr. Kevin, you cannot expect his talent will not be required sooner rather than later as a Pastor or, in this case, “Director.” We will plan suitable ways to say thank you and good-bye to Fr. Kevin. I am glad we still have him for two more months.

—Fr. Dan, Pastor

Dear friends and parishioners,

I want to convey my sincere gratitude to God and to you for the privilege of being a priest at Sacred Heart and Our Lady’s this past year! Being a priest is about conveying the faith, helping people to live the faith, and sanctifying them through the pres-ence of God in the sacraments. It’s been a delight to be able to do exactly this at our collaborative, and to get to know so many of you, all the while learning from your faith and dedication.

When I depart for BU, it will mark my one-year point here in Newton. A year is shorter than I expected, but I will of course look forward to remaining in contact with everyone. In the life of faith, and in bringing Christ to his people, there’s often a sense of trading one great thing for another, and that’s why this is a “both/and” moment. I’m deeply grateful to Fr. Dan, Fr. Dennis, the parishioners, volunteers, and staff here for their faith, leadership, and steadfastness. I’m also now privileged to serve the students at BU as they chart the course of their spiritual lives, and allow Christ to guide them during their pivotal years.

As ever, I will be in touch with everyone during the coming weeks and months on FlockNote, and I will remain here at the parish for a good while, continuing our shared Lenten fast from the ordinary course of spiritual life, but remaining hopeful that we will be at Mass together before too much longer!

With love and prayers, Fr. Kevin

Remembering Fr. John Sassani: Special Mass Next Weekend

As was planned months ago, next Sunday, April 19, we will be sharing online a special Mass of remembrance for Fr. John, rec-orded at Our Lady’s. This recording will be sent out via Flock-note and available on our YouTube page https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPJ3LL_OmmGMn5My8tp5KyA (We regret that this Mass will not be open to the public.)

Our planned reception following Mass will be postponed to a later date when it is safe to gather together.

Please see the green box on the next page for more information about ways we are remembering Fr. John on the first anniversary of his death, April 21, and please keep Fr. John and all who grieve his passing in your prayers.

Fr. John Sassani—Homily Given on April 24, 2011 Easter Sunday of the Lord’s Resurrection—Liturgical Year A

Homily reflections are also available each week online at www.sholnewton.org/godeeper. Photo Album will return in future bulletins. In the meantime, visit us on Instagram @sholnewton

It began on Easter. In Matthew’s Gospel that we hear on Easter in other liturgical years, we are told that the women, like so many, went to Jesus’ tomb to mourn, to weep, and to pray. Instead, they are met by an angel, who gives them a message of hope and encouragement. As they went from the tomb to share the news of Resurrection, they meet Christ Risen, fall at his feet, and embrace him. He fills them with new life, lives now hidden with Christ in God.

In this Gospel, Jesus tells the women: “Do not be afraid to tell the news to the disciples. They will see me in Galilee.” And they did.

For us, the Resurrection fills the universe – by the witness of people around the world, by experiences of grace and prayer, and by the Eucharist.

A high point of our Easter liturgy today and all through the Easter season is the renewal of our baptismal promises. This is not just a listing of the basic truths of our faith; it is an expression of the relationship of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit with us, the Church, as collaborators in salvation through the sacraments by which he fills

the universe. When we live our faith, when we witness hope, when we are people who love like Christ does, not counting the cost, and give our lives to those who need our love, we are collaborating with Christ.

Easter is a day for gratitude and thanksgiving: for Resurrection, as it touches each of us; at this Eucharist which we gather for today, and as our lives are hidden with Christ, so that he can be present to others through us.

Happy Easter to you all! Staff Note: Fr. John’s notes for this homily began with the name Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, who was a Jesuit priest, philosopher, and writer. Without any other context, we didn’t know and didn’t want to guess what specifically Fr. John was referencing. However, in attempting to figure it out, we learned that Teilhard once said “O God, if in my life I have not been wrong, allow me to die on Easter Sunday,” which he did in 1955. We don’t believe it to be a coincidence that Fr. John also died on Easter Sunday and referenced Teilhard in this Easter homily. May they both rest in peace and share in Christ’s Resurrection!

Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty,

my memory, my understanding, and my entire will,

all I have and call my own. You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it.

Everything is yours; do with it what you will.

Give me only your love and your grace; that is enough for me.

-The Suscipe of St. Ignatius Loyola

This prayer, which is found in St. Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises, was deeply meaningful to Fr. John. He led people through the Spiritual Exercises many times during his priestly ministry, and the words of the prayer became even more poignant in his illness.

As April 21 approaches, the Pastoral Staff invites you to partici-pate in several opportunities to honor Fr. John’s memory and to celebrate his legacy on the first anniversary of his passing to eter-nal life.

First, we will be sharing online a special Mass of remem-brance for Fr. John on Sunday, April 19, recorded at Our Lady’s. Our planned reception following Mass will be post-poned to a later date when it is safe to gather together.

We also now announce plans for several projects to create perma-nent memorials to Fr. John at each parish.

At Sacred Heart, we will be adding Fr. John’s portrait to the pas-tors’ wall in the parish office, and we are planning for an installa-tion of the Suscipe prayer in the Grotto behind the convent.

At Our Lady’s, we will be installing a new marble slab in the Lower Hall with Fr. John’s name and dates of pastorship, adding to the existing memorial there. We are also planning to refurbish the Reconciliation Chapel in Fr. John’s memory, in order to make it a more prayerful space; it will include the Suscipe prayer.

We are seeking your financial support to make these memorial plans a reality. If you would like to contribute, please make checks payable to either “Sacred Heart” or “Our Lady’s” with “Fr. John” written in the memo line. All contributions are tax-deductible. Any funds donated in excess of the projects’ costs will be earmarked for the continued beautification and upkeep of these two parishes that Fr. John loved so deeply and served so faithfully.

We are grateful for your ongoing love for Fr. John and we thank you in advance for your generosity towards these projects. If you have any questions, please contact Kristina at kpreman@ sholnewton.org or 617-527-7560 ext.216.

Care for Creation: Abstaining from Meat Is Good for the Planet, too!

Now that you've changed your light bulbs, why not consider changing your lunch? Make combating climate change a Lenten practice by reducing or eliminating your meat consumption for Lent! Meat and dairy, particularly from cows, have an outsize impact on carbon emissions, with livestock accounting for around 14.5% of the world’s greenhouse gases each year. That’s roughly the same amount as the emissions from all the cars, trucks, airplanes, and ships combined in the world today! Perhaps, besides Fridays, we could add more days of abstaining from meat to our personal Lenten practice as a way to love God, ourselves, our neighbors, and our Earth.

Care for Creation: Opt Up to 100% Renewable Electricity

If you haven’t already opted up to 100% renewable power with Newton Power Choice, now is a good time to do so. If you’re using your electric devices at home more than usual, then you’re using more electricity than you normally would. By opting up to 100%, you will be promoting local solar and wind power. Please join over 1,900 Newton residents by signing up now at: https://masspowerchoice.com/newton/opt-up2 or call 1-833-272-9592.

Sacred Heart News

No Convent Access for the Next Several Weeks

This Monday, April 13, Assured Fire Alarm will be in the convent to begin the installation of the new alarm system. This installation process should last 2-4 weeks, and during this time, the convent will be completely inaccessible. For the sake of safety of the workers and everyone involved, nobody may enter the convent.

Normal safety precautions for construction would already suggest this, but the heightened safety restrictions because of COVID-19 demand that we require even stricter safety measures.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Mass Cards Despite the parish office being closed for the time being, Mass cards are still available. Please contact Sioux at [email protected] or leave a voicemail at ext.110.

Religious Education News Due to the Coronavirus, the Religious Education Food Bag Drive is cancelled for this year. We will make new plans once our new RE year begins in the fall.

All CCD families should have received at-home curriculum online by this time. Please make sure students complete the remaining lessons for the year. Most grades require a series of responses to catechists for each lesson in order to maintain accountability. Please respectfully respond on students’ progress and maintain contact with your child’s catechist until the lesson in completed.

Parents of Grade 2 sacramental preparation students should especially alert the catechist that children have completed materials that were sent home. We thank you for your earnest cooperation.

God bless you in this time of trial and gift of family time! Michelle Solomon, Director of Religious Ed. [email protected] 617-969-2248 ext. 126

New to our Collaborative? Welcome! Please introduce yourself after Mass or at the parish offices. We want to know and serve you! We hope you will participate in our parishes with your prayers, presence, talents, and stewardship accord-ing to your means.

Pastoral Care of the Sick: We are most eager to help any-one who cannot celebrate Mass with us in church. If you or a loved one wishes to receive the Sacraments of the Anointing of the Sick, Eucharist, or Reconciliation, please call the par-ish offices. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is celebrated after all parish Masses on the first full weekend of each month. Please also notify us of hospitalizations, so that we may be of help.

Sacraments of Initiation: For adults interested in Baptism, Confirmation, or joining the Catholic Church, please contact Nick Frega; for high school Confirmation, contact Michelle

Solomon at Sacred Heart or Kristina Preman at Our Lady's; for older children to be baptized or to receive Holy Commun-ion, contact Michelle Solomon at Sacred Heart or Rosemary Seibold at Our Lady's.

Infant Baptisms: Infant Baptisms are celebrated at Mass or on special Sundays throughout the year. Parents are asked to call the parish office to begin the process. A program of prep-aration is offered to all parents. For more information, please visit our website.

Sacrament of Marriage: Please contact the parish offices at least 6 months in advance. A preparation program is offered to all couples. For more information, please visit our website.

Saint Vincent de Paul Society: For more information, email [email protected] or call 617-527-7560 x255(OL) or 617-969-2248 (SH).

During this period of separation from the normal course of sacramental life, we continue to pray for the inten-tions of our community of faith, and the priests of the collaborative continue to offer daily (private) Masses for the intentions listed here.

Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe, from US Conference of Catholic Bishops

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana.

Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness.

For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust.

In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts.

We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy.

Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.
