Fred Loneragan related a story of a mentally ill man, kept caged for his safety because there was no treatment available, and how Rotary connections brought him the help he needed. Membership matters! Denise Flockton asked for more volunteers to join Jo Wilson and Mark Brown in the dragon boat that the Wagga Foot Clinic is sponsoring for the community team events in the Dragon Boat Regatta. Angela Metcalfe gave the details for the Christmas party at the cost of $30 pp, BYO. Final numbers and payment are needed by 24 November. Please bring a cheap cheerful present, either useful or fun for the Santa sack. Ray Goodlass advised that nominations are being sought for the Wagga Wagga Rotary Peace Awards: names to Ray, please. Deirdre Tome thanked those members who attended the Brad Hewson fundraiser. Deirdre and Fred Loneragan represented Sunrise at a recent meeting, when three local Rotary

Clubs (Murrumbidgee, Wollundry and Sunrise) expressed interest in re-forming a Rotaract club in Wagga. Each club will contribute $100 to a starter fund. Rotaract caters for young people 18-30 years of age who meet every fortnight: it is a social club with a community focus. Potential members could be students at TAFE, CSU, even those who have been supported by Sunrise in youth projects and scholarships in previous years, or young professionals. A social function will be held for prospective members on Friday 11 December at the Black Swan, time TBA.

the Aboriginal health day in 2014.Phil started by us all. After giving a summary of the types of medical and allied health services that RivMed provides to Indigenous families and non-Indigenous partners, Leigh gave us some startling facts about the occurrence of diabetes in Australia. Around 1.7 million Australians have diabetes, which is the fastest growing chronic condition in Australia, faster than other chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer. Type 1 diabetes accounts for 10% of all diagnoses, and Type 2 for 85%. Gestational diabetes (in pregnancy) is also on the increase.

Diabetes can now be diagnosed in only 6 minutes using a machine which tests glycated haemoglobin from a drop of blood. Those who should be tested are those at risk of diabetes, with symptoms (eg excessive fatigue), a family history of diabetes and elevated lipids and blood pressure. New medications are now available, including one made from lizard’s spit which gets the kidneys to excrete glucose. Other treatments involve a combination of tablets, injectable medication and insulin. Exercise is the most important treatment, using interval training to alter the metabolism. Riv Med’s strategies to improve care for the Indigenous community include a flexible clinic, health promotion, and staff training. Leigh hopes to obtain funding to make a local DVD aimed at people less than 30 years of age and families with young children for showing in the RivMed waiting rooms. John Wood gave a vote of thanks to Leigh for her very interesting talk which held everyone’s attention.

LUCKY DRAW: Bob Martin won the wine.
