Kindling the Light Rabhi Frank Muller

I n the most recent edition of Reform Judaism magazine, Rabbi Richard Levy, president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, outlines what he calls "The Ten Principles for Reform Judaism", a

bold new statement of the direction he envisions our movement to be headed in the next century. These guidelines call for reclaiming some of the traditional Jewish practices rejected by the founders of Reform and for embracing new pathways to holiness and social justice.

Indeed, Reform Judaism has changed a great deal since its humble beginnings, and statements of our basic beliefs reflecting those changes have been formally adopted by the CCAR at various junctures in our history. There was the Pittsburgh Platform of 1885, the Columbus Platform of 1937 and the Centenary Perspective of 1976. Now, on the threshold of a new millennium, the time is ripe once again to examine where we have been and to assess where we are going.

There is little doubt that Rabbi Levy's proposal of his Ten Principles will generate much heated discussion amongst both the leaders and laity of our movement. It is difficult at this time to hazard a guess as to what the final form of our newest platform will be. Yet one thing is certain - Reform Judaism in the future will be very different from what it has been in the past.

One of those differences will be reflected in how we worship. In the nottoo-distant future, our movement will publish a new prayerbook to replace the current Gates of Prayer. Its most prominent feature will be the use of gender-neutral language.

For example, the Shema that all of us grew up with, "Hear 0 Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One," will be changed to "Hear 0 Israel, the Eternal is our God, the Eternal God alone". Although this new translation will undoubtedly sound foreign to our ears at first, I believe it is a necessary, evolutionary step as we train the younger generation not to think of God as a male human being, which the word "Lord" suggests. There are other reasons why I feel gender-neutraI language is important, not the least of which is that it reflects the equality of men and women in all aspects of Reform Judaism today.

As a way to offer our congregants an introduction to gender-neutral liturgy, the Temple has recently purchased fifty copies of the CCAR's transitional prayer booklet, which will be used at selected services on an experimental basis in the coming year. The books have been donated by the family and

friends of Evelyn Solomon in honor of her 80th birthday, which our temple celebrated last y~ar. As you become familiar with the new prayerbooks, I invite your comments and impressions. In the meantime, I encourage you to read the cover story in Reform Judaism magazine, and to attend our Shabbat Service-in-the-Round on January 8th. In lieu of the normal sermon, we will have an open discussion on the controversial but very important subject of charting a new course for our movement in the next century. My best wishes to each of you for a healthy and productive 1999.

My View froln the Bilnah Ell1if S. Dickstein

Over the next few months there will be a lot of events going on at Rodef Sholom, and we extend an open hand in inviting all of you to participate.

In January, the Rabbi continues to have his Tuesday Lunch and Learn discussions on the Ten Commandments. In February, a Family TuBishvat Seder will be held on the 5th. Brotherhood will sponsor a YSU basketball event February 6th. February 19th is the Brotherhood-Sisterhood Service with guest speaker Mayor George McKelvey. February 20th will be adult bowling at Bell Wick Lanes. The Purim Family service is February 26th (an ice cream social!) and the Purim Carnival on the 28th.

March 9th, 16th and 23rd is the three-part "A Taste of Judaism: Are You Curious?" course in an effort to outreach to the larger community. March 20th is a Brotherhood outing to the YSU Planetarium. On March 27th at Rodef Sholom there will be a tricongregational fellowship with members from the two Temple Israels of Akron and Canton. This will be a nice way to interact with members from our sister Temples who share the same interests as us. We might have the Junior Youth Groups from the three congregations meeting, too. March 31 st is our Passover Seder.

Of course there are the usual Shabbat services, including the informal "in-the-round" ones, Torah study, and Tot Shabbat. Sisterhood has its major get-together. Incidentally, look out for new gender-sensitive prayer books and a new men's bathroom . .

Our mission includes raising Jewish consciousness through religious, educational, and social means-to elevate the spiritual, the intellectual, and the feeling of Jewish community. We are trying to offer a few significant moments . of commitment to our faith, culture, and ethic-please do participate.

ProgrmTI Notes Marcee Anderson, Progra111 Director

Our upcoming event for Friday, February 5th is a TuBishvat Seder sponsored by the Congregational Life Committee.

TuBishvat, the "New Year of the Trees" was celebrated by the 16th century Jews in the form of a seder, similar to Passover. They prepared a fifteen course meal, each course including a food connected with the land. The service included passages from the Bible, the Talmud and the mystical Zohar. Today we celebrate by eating fruits and nuts that grow in Israel -oranges, figs, grapes, dates, carobs, pomegranates, almonds and more. In between each course we drink fruit juice, instead of wine. One of today's rituals is planting seeds from these fruits, indoors, such as oranges and avocado pits. We also plant trees in Israel through the Jewish National Fund. We purchase tree certificates to honor or memorialize a loved one, thus a tree is planted in their name.

Trees have always been important in Israel. Rabbi J ohanan ben Zakkai told his students "If you're planting a tree and someone runs up and tells you that the messiah has come .... finish planting the tree first then go and greet the messiah."

Hope to see everyone at our TuBishvat Seder on February 5th!

Hannukah Candynlaking - A Sweet Success

The start of Hannukah was made all the sweeter on Sunday afternoon, December 13, when two dozen children and their parents gathered in the kitchen to watch candymaker extraordinaire Bob Hendricks work his magic in making from scratch delicious candy canes (blue & white for Hannukah of course). Candy making has been a tradition in Bob's family for three generations, and on this particular occasion we were the lucky recipients of his talent and skill.

Like Judah Maccabee, Bob recruited a few brave men for the task of pulling and stretching the candy mix, which was extremely hot from being cooked at 280 degrees. All hands kept their cool, however, and the children delighted in rolling and forming the candy into as many sizes and shapes as their imaginations would allow. White com starch was everywhere - on tables, hands and especially faces. Everyone had a great time, and we thank Bob and Amy for planning and arranging this very special holiday activity. We hope to do it again next year, so if your kids missed it this time, they'll hopefully have another chance come Hannukah 1999.

Hannukah Pot Luck Dinner Stuart Stra.~leld

The Congregational Celebration of the Festival of Lights took place on December 18, 1998. Rabbi Muller conducted an inspirational family service reminding us of the miracles of Hannukah we celebrate and encouraging each congregant to do acts of Tzedakah.

The Youngstown Connection

Immediately following the service dinner was provided - family style - by those in attendance, with some culinary assistance from Evelyn Solomon. The miracles of this Holiday do not include making sure the Pot Luck Dinner is balances; that responsibility was ably assumed by Denise Altman and Kelly Newman. The meal was a true feast . .. a Festival of Outstanding Cookery! The first Latke Bake-off winner was Barbara Kirkorsky

During dinner the young ones were entertained by Carmel Apple who painted their faces. Kelly Newman, through the generosity of Brotherhood, then provided the children with Hannukah gifts. Following dinner, the entire congregation was entertained, moved, and inspired by the performance of the Youngstown Connection. This select group of talented high school students from the City of Youngstown has performed all over the world · - and clearly demonstrates what is "right" about our community.

The success of the evening was a "Team Effort" . .. Our hats are off to the Brotherhood, the Congregational Life Committee, the Temple staff and Rabbi Muller.

SISTERHOOD BOOK REVIEW LUNCHEON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 16TH

12:00 NOON STROUSS HALL

Cost of Lunch:$6.50

On Tuesday, February 16, the Sisterhood will hold a luncheon and book review program. Guest Speaker will be Claudia Fechter. The fonner Director of Libraries and Museum at The Temple-Tifereth Israel in Cleveland, Mrs. Fechter is currently an independent curator on the staff of Cleveland State University Art Department. In her spare time she is the Librarian at Suburban Temple in Beachwood. She is also the mother of Geri Muller. She will be reviewing the book, The Jew Store, written by Stella Subennan. The author tells the story of her father, Aaron Bronson, a Russian immigrant who moved from New York to a small town in Tennessee and established Bronson's Low-Priced Store. Although Subennan's book is autobiographical, it reads like a novel as she depicts events in her family and in her town that span thirteen years. It is a moving, coming of age story, an account of daily life in a rural southern town, and a telling commentary on bigotry. Both humorous and nostalgic, The Jew Store is a lovingly told, intimate family portrait which illuminates a little-known piece of American and Jewish history. It was selected as a best seller on the Jewish Book Month list. It is available at Barnes & Noble for anyone who would like to read the book in advance of the review.

I would like to place my reservation for the Sisterhood Book Review Luncheon.

I am enclosing a check for ____ for ____ persons. Cost is $6.50 per person.
