JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE PASSOVER APPEAL

It is not too late to make your contribution to the Jewish Family and Counseling Service Passover and Relief Fund. Please make your checks payable to "JF&CS Passover and Relief Fund" and send them to the Temple. This is a wonderful mitzvah, which enables everyone in our community to celebrate a happy and Kosher Passover, so we hope you will assist the Jewish Family Service by making a very generous contribution.

OUR VOLUNTEER CHOIR NEEDS YOU!

Cantor A verbakh will begin rehearsing with our volunteer choir after Pesach in preparation for a performance at one of our Shabbat evening services in June. The choir rehearses on Saturdays after our Shabbat morning services. If you have enjoyed the choir' s performances in the past and have wanted to join the fun, now is your chance. The only requirement for joining the choir is the desire to sing and a love for Jewish music. New volunteers are welcome, of course. Just call the Temple office and let us know that you are interested in joining our choir. and we will let you know when rehearsals will begin.

COMMUNITY HOLOCAUST OBSERVANCE

Our community Yom HaShoah commemoration will be held on Thursday, April 19 at 7:00 pm at Congregation B'nai Jacob, 176 West Side Avenue. Rabbi Brickman will participate in this commemoration of the Holocaust, which is always a very moving ceremony. We hope that you will join us for this important annual community event.

IRVING & MINERVA SWEET MEMORIAL LECTURE Sunday, May 6, 2001- 9:30 am

Admission is Free

"Emma Lazarus: American, Jewish and Female" Dr. Daniel A. Harris, Ph.D.

Founder, JEWISH VOICES: 200 YEARS OF POETRY IN ENGLISH

Bildner Center for the Study of Jewish Life; Professor of English, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ

If we know the lines Lazarus wrote about the "huddled masses yearning to breathe free," few of us realize that Lazarus aimed, from the beginning to be a significant Jewish-American female poet. Jewish poems, spanning her entire career, speak to the chief issues in Jewish-American cultural life: Lazarus's repeated efforts to shape her Jewish, female "voice" despite Christian conversionist designs and the weight of New England literary pressures, her understanding of Jewish liturgical traditions, her historical conception of Judaism in relation to other major civilizations, her fierce responses to the Russian pogroms of the 1880's, and her assumption - through Moses, Heine, others - of prophetic roles . Her increasingly strident tones and the complexity of her cultural perceptions combine with sharp auditory imagination and smart psychological strategies. Dr. Harris has given many workshops and short courses on Jewish poetry in the northeast United States. He teaches in the Center for the Study of Jewish life at Rutgers University, where he has been Professor of English since 1983. In 1993, the University presented him with its highest teaching honor, the Award for Excellence in Teaching. Join us for a light continental breakfast at 9:30 am, followed by the lecture. There is no charge for this event, however reservations are required. Please call the Temple office to make reservations .
