Year 2001 Scholar in Residence Features Rossel, February 2-4

Under the auspices of the Eitz Chayim Committee, renowned author and educator, Seymour Rossel will join the congregation February 2-4, 2001 as scholarin-residence. Mr. Rossel's sessions will focus on Jewish Magic and Mysticism; Building a Mysticism for Modern Jews.

Seymour Rossel is the author of 26 books for Jewish and public schools, including A Child's Bible and When a Jew Prays. His latest works are A Congregation of Learners; Transforming the Synagogue into a Learning Commuriity and Let Freedom Ring; A History of the Jews in the United States.

Currently director of Pathways Foundation, an advocacy program for Jewish teens Rossel served as Director of the U.A.H.C. Press, U.A.H.C. Department of Education and the Commission on Reform Jewish Education. Presently he serves on the national boards of the Coalition for the Advancement of Jewish Education, the Jewish Book Council of America and the National Association of Temple Educators.

Rossel holds an M.A. in Jewish Education from N.Y.U. He has edited a wide range of books; among them, many Jewish texts in wide use today. In addition, he created computer programs used in the field of Jewish education.

He holds the "Bonei HaNegev" Award for outstanding work in Jewish education and was recently honored by being inducted as an honorary member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis.

Join Mr. Rossel in exploring the ways in which Jewish magical and mystical movements have connected with the world in which we live. Is it possible for us to receive the age-old traditions of Kabbalah and, at the same time, to connect them with Jewish life in the twenty-first century? We invite you to discoverthe magic in the Bible and the way mystics view the Torah.

Throughout the weekend Mr. Rossel will join the congregation in a variety of different settings. Please consult the timetable of programs listed below.

Wise Temple Marks Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Sabbath with Union Baptist Church

Continuing our tradition of a decade, Wise Temple will celebrate the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend with Temple Sholom on Friday, January 12, at 8:15 p.m. at Wise Center. Our guests will be members of the Union Baptist Church, their Choir and pastor, Rev. Orlando Yates.

This special service commemorating the memory and the legacy of Dr. King has become part of our congregational observance of this national holiday. We are delighted to continue the celebration of this day with Union Baptist, a downtown church, who like us, has a membership comprised of people from many areas thoughout the tri-state area. If you have never attended one of our Martin Luther King Shabbat services, you will enjoy the oratory of our guest preacher, and the exciting music offered by both the Wise Temple and Temple Sholom Choirs, and the Union Baptist Choir.

This service will also serve as our participation in a program of Pulpit exchanges between synagogues and African-American churches, which Rev. Yates and Rabbi Kamrass are helping to coordinate. Such a program will bring local African-American ministers to speak in various synagogues during January and February.

Mark your calendar, and plan to join us on Friday, January 12, 2001 at Wise Center for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Shabbat at 8:15 p.m.

Note: it is Temple policy that in order to appropriately commemorate the importance of Dr. King's life and work, the Temple Office will be closed on Monday, January 15,2001 and NO Temple activities will occur that day or evening. We encourage all members to take part in community activities to mark this occasion.

III NEWS FROM THE EDUCATION CENTER III Our value for the month of January is Emet, truthfulness.

Be truthful, honest, straight; have integrity. Do not lie, fabricate, deceive, delude, manipulate, distort, or be false in any way. All of these are aspects of Emet. Truth is an ideal to be sought in all aspects of life. We may think that Emet demands bluntness, complete honesty- the stark truth. But when some softening of the truth prevents shame or embarrassment, hurt or humiliation, that, too is a virtue. Hillel and Shammai, for instance, had a fascinating debate concerning boundaries between truth and falsehood. They use the example of a bride who is unattractive and ungraceful. Does one tell her that she is so. Or does one stretch the truth and not be totally honest?

The Talmud teaches us that people should not say one thing with their mouths, and something else with their hearts. (Baba Metziah 49a) The following story illustrates this: It is told of Rabbi Safra that he had an article to sell. A certain man came to him while the Rabbi was reciting the "Shema" and said, "let me have the article for such and such a price." When Rabbi Safra didn't answer, the would-be purchaser, thinking Rabbi Safra was not willing to sell ' for the offered price, kept increasing the amount, saying, "let me have it for more money." After Rabbi Safra finished saying the "Shema", he said, ''Take the article at the price you mentioned first, for I was wiling to sell it to you at that price." (Makkot 24a) Said the Russian Hasidic Rabbi, Ladier: I have labored 21 years on truth: seven years to learn what truth is, seven years to drive out falsehood, and seven years to acquire the habit of truthfulness. (Emet Keneh, published by A. Rosengarten)

THOUGHTS FROM OUR GRADUATING SENIORS AS THEY WERE PRINTED IN THE SENIOR RECOGNITION SERVICE IN MAY

"Wise Temple has been a home to me for nine years. Before my family became a member of Wise, we belonged to another synagogue. I am so glad that we switched temples because I have gotten so much out of Wise. Wise Temple has shown me what Judaism truly is and how to help out our own Jewish Community. I have been a Madricha for three years and am sad to leave the Open Room next year. I enjoy waking up every Sunday morning and seeing the smiling faces on the little kids. I wish that I could have been in the Open Room when I was little! I plan to continue my Jewish education at college and I will never forget what Wise Temple has given to me, a sense of belonging in the Jewish Community." -Jessica Gilbert

"I have to write a paragraph. What . . . why ... And I have to do this . Those were my initial reactions to writing this paragraph. I didn ' t really know how to describe my experience at Wise. I have been a part of the Wise Temple family for as long as I can remember. Wise has been a place to chill , to laugh, to learn, and to find my perspective of being Jewish. I have so many memories here, and I would also like to take this time to thank my parents for giving me the opportunity to attend such a righteous Temple filled with many people that care for me. Wise Temple has just taken up a critical part of my evening .. . but hopefully later on in life, when I mature .. . Wise Temple will take part in a critical part of my life." -Laurence Haas

Winter Conditions are More Intense at Wise Center

Congregants should exercise extreme caution when on the grounds of the Wise Center during winter months.

The Temple contracts with a snow removal service with whom we are in pager contact. They are called to clear the main lot and driveway as soon as snow has slowed or stopped, and are called back to salt as required. Our Temple building staff generally does a superior job of cleaning off walkways.

Even when we have cleared and salted the property, melting continues and refreezes overnight or in a few hours during the day, creating icy patches. We cannot stay ahead of this. .

We urge you to be extra careful here. If you have a serious fear of falling on ice or snow you might want to call before you come to Wise Center.

Weather Cancellations

All cancellations due to inclement weather will be broadcast on the radio (AM & FM) and on TV. Also, for Wednesday classes , cancellation of Cincinnati Public Schools implies that there will be no classes at Wise Center. For Sunday classes, parents will be notified by phone chain (mailed in November) as well as by calling the Temple Answering Service line, 793-2559. The Answering Service line will also provide information on general building closings and program cancellations.
