FROM THE RABBI

Sandford R. Kopnick

A SCARY MOVIE AND A SCARY TIME

In the coming weeks, a movie by producer Mel Gibson titled "The Passion" will be released. HUC-JIR Professor Michael Cook (our recent scholar-in-residence) read the script (after production had concluded) and was very alarmed at the way Jews were depicted. He and a panel of other scholars were very concerned about the content, the depiction of Jews, and more. Given the alarming rise of anti-semitism world wide, the timing of this movie should be cause for some apprehension among us Jews.

Unfortunately, the situation in the Middle East and the Iraq War have only made world-wide anti-Semitism stronger. By some accounts, Europe is experiencing the worst anti-semitic period since World War II-and some Jewish communities are advising their traditional folks to remove their yarmulkes in public.

As "The Passion" movie is released, it will get a tremendous amount of attention because of the controversy surrounding it. Mel Gibson is reported to be a very conservative Catholic from a sect that does not recognize Popes since Pius XII or Vatican II. As a result, depicting Jews as the "killers" of Christ is in keeping with such a philosophy.

Those who say, "its only a movie-not history" are naIve about the power of this medium. When I tell people scholars think that the Biblical Golden Calf, for example, was probably not much bigger than a few fists put together, they are shocked. After all, Edward G. Robinson built a much larger one in the Ten Commandments Movie. When we think of Moses and Joshua, so many think of Carleton Heston and John Dereck. Rabbi B. Demille's midrash on the Ten Commandments is, in fact, many people's only conception of the Exodus story. The power of a movie is immense.

Dr. Cook believes that it is very important that we all see this movie. We should know what is being said about our ancestors. I, however, believe that we should not engage in public debate about the movie's accuracy. In the coming weeks, there will be much written about the movie-and we should carefully select our reviewers based on their qualifications as scholars of the New Testament. Ebert and Roper's opinion, therefore, should not matter. Reviews in the Jewish Press will help us understand how to best approach this movie. I think we should allow those uniquely qualified (like Dr. Cook) to respond. I don't know about you, but I am better educated about Jewish history than Christian history.

In early March, I hope to have a sermon dedicated to a review of the movie along with some helpful talking points to get you through would could be a rough cocktail party or water-cooler discussion.

Faithfully,

~~ Rabbi Sandford R. Kopnick

CONFIRMATION CLASS SET TO TRAVEL TO D.C.

Rabbi Sandford Kopnick will accompany our confirmands to Washington, D.C. the weekend of February 20-23, 2004. The program is sponsored by the Religious Action Center, the lobby arm of the Union for Reform Judaism.

During the weekend, students will spend time with Rabbi Kopnick learning about issues surrounding homelessness, poverty, the War in Iraq, reproductive rights, separation of church and state, and more. All are taught by rabbis and legislative assistants (recently graduated college students). The positions of the Reform movement are determined by the Social Action Commission, a group of rabbis and lay-leaders who work to determine the liberal Jewish view of an issue.

Included in the weekend are visits to the Smithsonian museums, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Georgetown, and more. In addition, religious services are conducted in the hotel. On Monday, February 23, our students will meet in the Capital Hilllegislative offices of our members of congress to actually lobby issues of concern to the class.

RELGIOUS SCHOOL CORNER

As you read this, Religious School will have been back in session for one month after winter break. The cold days of winter are upon us and it seems like spring will take forever to arrive. The second grade made beautiful gardens in pots spelling out the word "Aviv" in Hebrew, which means spring. They even made one for the Temple! Be sure to watch it growing as you are sitting in the front lobby. I'm sure it will start blooming and flourishing along with ALL of our religious school as February turns into March and spring begins to take hold!

Before February turns into March, on Saturday February 7th, we will celebrate Tu B' Shevat. This takes place when most of the winter rains have passed in Israel, and the sap is beginning to rise in the trees. We celebrate the rebirth of nature and the rebirth of Israel. Tu B'Shevat is the perfect holiday to make us forget about winter "doldrums" and get ready for spring!

As February turns into March, actually on Friday February 27th

, I'll be speaking about my trip to Israel. Please mark the date on your calendars and plan to attend Shabbat Services that night. It was winter in Jerusalem, but the weather the last week in December was more like Aviv and I'm excited to be able to share not only my trip, but part of Israel with everyone.

Again, I'm going back to the V'ahavta: Israel is something I think we "shall teach diligently unto our children." I look forward to sharing Israel with all of you AS winter begins to fade into spring.

CRJHS DIRECTOR'S CORNER

With the soft beat of the drum we began our 2 day mini -mester on Spirituality and Mysticism. The students were given a great gift from their Rabbis this January 11th. Rabbis Kopnick, Goldman, Shulman and Rabbinic Intern Randi Nagel shared with an audience of over 200 students their own searches for and struggles with spirituality.

The students were treated to an insight into the spiritual practices and moments of connection by each of these leaders. It is written ,"Where does God dwell, wherever we let God in ... " God was with us that Sunday night. I told the students that it was my wish that this evening be the true starting place of our journey together. That we will walk student and teacher, Temple Sholom, Rockdale, Wise and Valley stepping as one upon a spiritual search. Our teachers will be guides to help each child upon their own journey.

May we have many more of these God moments together.
