Brotherhood will work when it comes from the heart, by conviction, instead of merely from the lips, by pronouncement, R abbi Barnett R. Brickner of E uclid Avenue Temple said as guest preacher at First U nitarian Church yesterday.
Kinship, Not Kingship Rabbi Brickner, who exchanged pul
pits with Dr. Robert Killam in observance of BrotheI1hood Week, asserted " Brotherhood may not mean loving one's enemy, but it does mean justice to your enemy."
" Brotherhood does not entail unifomity, but it should lead to unity among the faiths, not standardization but ethical standards to be observed by all ," Rabbi Brickner continued. "It means a sense of kinship with other human beings. It certainly means the aboli tion of a feeling of kingshiJ> over our feHow creatures.
"Perhaps pure brotherhood is too difficult to attain at one leap. But that does not mean we must refrain from taking the first steps, however small they may appear to be, toward the ulti~ mate goal."
"We Fully ·Respect ... " The spiritual leader of the oldest
Jewish congregation in Cleveland held this means that people in the community may feel a reluctance toward accepting the full implications of the ideal of totaa brotherliness, but they dare not abstain from taking part in movements designed to limit the area of prejudice.
"One of the finest examples of brotherhood in action here is the relationship between this church, where I have the privilege of speaking, and Euclid Avenue Temple, where your minister honored us with his presence last Sabbath Eve," Rabbi Brickner concluded. "We are close together in space and also in spirit. But despite the close bond which unites us, we realize the substantial diversity of our two faiths .
"These differences have never resulted
in tension. ';Y e fully respect each other's precepts and practices and accord each other the right to pursue them in freedom. To cite a rabbinic dictum, where brethren dwell together in amity there the spirit of God is truly made manifest."

HE KNEW HIS ALEF-BAIS . . . BUT THAT'S ALL
(An item from, "Israel Laughs," by Paul Steiner, in The New Palestine.)
A Jerusalem businessman telephoned an associate in Tel Aviv. A four-yearold answered the phone and explained that daddy was out. "Too bad," said the caller, ready to hang up, when the youngster, bright and efficient, asked: "W ouId you care to leave a message?"
"All right," said the man, "tell him Mr. Grossman called." "Grossman," repeated the child. "How do you spell that?" The man patiently spelled his name. There was an awesome siJence, then a plaintive voice: "Mr. Grossman, how do you make a gimmel?"
