Career Day at the Parade of Homes provided students with a unique opportunity to interact

and network with industry professionals on the actual job sites of our community’s finest homes. This year, Bristol Gardens was home to the first annual Career Day. Parade builders, subcontractors, and industry professionals gave guidance and insight into their professions to local students during the first annual Career Day event. In total, over 25 members participated!

With each house at varying stages of completion, it was a perfect time to showcase the homebuilding process to students interested in construction-related careers. Over 50 students from Oregon High School, Westfield High School and Madison College toured four Parade Homes at the Bristol Gardens Parade Site. After the tours, students were treated to a networking lunch at the Bristol Gardens Pavilion courtesy of Don Tierney.

The event was organized through the teamwork and collaboration of the Parade of Homes, Public Relations and Workforce Committees. The media was quick to cover our work in the community. The event was the lead story on both the Channel 3 and Channel 15 news broadcasts and it also was a feature article in the Sun Prairie Star. The media attention put our Association at the forefront of proactively finding a solution to the current workforce shortages. It was also was an opportunity for the Association to tout the upcoming Parade and gained recognition for its significant investment in its scholarship program.

We look forward to building from this year’s success and host even more students and members at next year’s Parade Sites!

WBAReport

Recently Governor Scott Walker signed into law four bills that were strongly supported by the Wisconsin Builders Association (WBA) and all received

widespread bipartisan support from the state legislature.

Wisconsin Act 280 will provide a better framework for developers working with local municipalities to assure the successful completion of infrastructure paid for by a developer and dedicated to a municipality. Wisconsin Act 280 will allow a developer to choose between a surety performance bond or a letter of credit when working with a municipality. Wisconsin Act 280 also puts into effect a 14 month limit on the timeframe to require financial security after substantial completion of the improvements and caps the amount of financial security established as 120% of the estimated total cost to complete the required public improvements. The lead authors of the effort were Representative Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna) and

Senator Frank Lasee (R-De Pere).

WBA has been working with other interest groups to make Wisconsin’s commercial building code more uniform for the past ten years. After a great deal of work this session that concept finally became law with Wisconsin Act 270. Senator Terry Moulton (R-Chippewa Falls) and Representative Dean Knudson (R-Hudson) were the lead authors of Wisconsin Act 270.

In an effort to promote recycling and reduce the cost of recycling construction and demolition materials in Wisconsin Act 301 is now in effect. Wisconsin Act 301 will reduce or eliminate the tipping fee on residue received by waste recycling facilities in shipments of construction and demolition materials. Wisconsin Act 301 was authored by Assembly Housing Committee Chair John Murtha (R-Baldwin) and State Senator Rob Cowles (R-Green Bay).

Finally, to help prevent multifamily unit owners from not being left with a lien on their property for tenants who do not pay their municipal public utility bill Wisconsin Act 274 is now law. To help landlords manage this problem, if a landlord informs a municipal utility of the name and address of a tenant who is responsible for payment of bills for utility service to a rental dwelling unit, the municipal utility must send the landlord certain notices when unpaid utility charges are accruing for the rental dwelling unit. Wisconsin Act 274 was authored by Senator Frank Lasee (R-De Pere) and Representative Andre Jacque (R-De Pere).

This has been another very successful session for WBA with the passage of the above mentioned bills in addition to earlier legislative wins like having the one and two family code reviewed on a six year cycle, ending the Building Contractor Registration (BCR), over $2 billion in additional tax relief, modernization of the rules for Wisconsin remodelers (DATCP 110) and an improvement to Wisconsin’s wall bracing rules.

Thank you for your help this legislative session to advocate for these important changes that will improve the building business climate in Wisconsin.

Four bills garnered strong bipartisan support from the state legislature.

Feature Parade of Homes Starts June 14thOpening Day at the Parade of Homes!

Circle June 14 on your calendar – that’s opening day for Parade of Homes, a two-week event that

showcases custom homes built by some of Wisconsin’s finest homebuilders. Sponsored by the Madison Area Builders Association Parade of Homes is a big-time event that has been a Madison tradition for 64 years.

Whether you’re thinking about building a new home or looking for ideas to update your existing home, you will find the latest and greatest in home design at the Parade,” said Amber Schroeder, executive director of the Madison Area Builders Association. “Also, with the housing market on its upward trend, and interest rates still fairly low, it’s a great time to consider investing in new construction.”

This year’s Parade of Homes features 27 homes in six neighborhoods in Dane County:

• Bristol Gardens: North of Sun Prairie, these homes have amazing views of rolling countryside and are connected to an extensive network of walking trails.

• Westbridge: Located just northwest of downtown Waunakee, this country-like setting is adjacent to the Six Mile Creek Golf Course and close to Highway 19.

• Savannah Parks: Just a few blocks from downtown Deerfield, this neighborhood is adjacent to the Glacial Drumlin State Trail that connects Cottage Grove to Waukesha.

• Kilkenny Farms: This new community is located south of downtown Waunakee, with access to trails and parks, as well as commercial and retail space.

• Legend at Bergamont: These spacious homes near Oregon offer a lifestyle that includes a 7,330-yard, 18-hole golf course, swimming pools, tennis courts, and fitness center.

• Rivers Turn at Conservancy Place: Located along a peaceful stretch of the Yahara River near DeForest, highlights of this 650-acre community include majestic oaks and riverside trails.

DIVERSE STYLES AND ACCENTS

As in year past, this year’s Parade of Homes showcases a variety of home styles and sizes, features and accents, and price points. Parade builders are committed to using greenbuilding techniques, energyefficient HVAC systems and appliances, and open floor plans that allow innovative use of space.

For example, the core living area in Hart Denoble Builders’ home in Kilkenny Farms is open and free-flows into a spacious kitchen, which has a restaurant-grade, woodfired, Italian pizza oven as the focal point. The second floor provides a guest wing with two bedrooms, a multi-use loft, and a bridge across to a “princess suite,” complete with a play loft and reading nook.

Technology is always at the forefront in a Parade home. One of the most technologically advanced is Midwest Homes’ Parade home in the Legend at Bergamont neighborhood. Features include fully automated lighting, thermostats, security cameras, and garage doors. “The sensors on the garage doors allow you to check to see if you left the door open,” said Brian McKee, president of Midwest Homes. “If you did, the door can be closed remotely using a smartphone, tablet, or computer.” The front-door bell will chime throughout the home through the distributed home audio, or can be programmed to chime only in selected rooms. “The theater room has full-theater controls, ranging from operating the audiovisual system to dimming the lights for a movie to raising the light level when you pause the movie and go refresh your beverage,” continued McKee.

SEEING IS BELIEVING

“Whether you’re ready to start building, or just want to learn about the latest home trends, you’ll find inspiration at the Parade of Homes from 27 of the best custom homebuilders in the area,” added Schroeder.

When you’re choosing a lender, it makes perfect sense to compare rates and loan options. At the same time, savvy buyers know that experience and reputation are just as important. Clients and builders believe we deliver both. Here are a few reasons why:

We offer jumbo loans, low down payment options and the ability to convert to a fixed rate loan.

Builders are excited to work with buyers who have Johnson Bank financing because they know the process will go smoothly.

Unlike many banks, we won’t pass the servicing of your loan onto a third party after closing. For the life of your loan, you’ll talk to a Johnson Bank representative.
