President’s Message

Abe DegnanDegnan Design Builders, Inc.

April 2013

As I write this, I’m really ready for winter to be over. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel, though, with some good industry news, which includes:

1. Reports of condo and home sales are up this month,

2. Exhibitors at the Home Products Show™ have given me favorable feedback about the people who came to see them, the appointments they have scheduled and the favorable buying signals, and

3. We have about 31 homes in the Parade of Homes™, and a large number of them (including mine!) are under contract, including all four in the Conservancy Place site!

But that doesn’t make construction any easier for us. The weather is already challenging. Moreover, there are reports of aggressive OSHA inspections! Fall protection rules just went into effect with full enforcement rather than just warnings. Need help? Mark your calendar tentatively for “The Most Common OSHA Violations” during the week of July 22-26. These upcoming seminars are the work of a re-invigorated Education Committee chaired by Robin Pharo (Treysta Group, LLC).

Going back to the good news, I’d like to thank our Home Products Show™ groups and all the MABA volunteers, and especially our chairs: First Vice President Harvey Kessell (Wisconsin Building Supply) who organized the MABA booth, Home Products Show Chair Virgil Waugh (Windsor Building Systems/Amwood Homes, Inc.) and HPS SeminarCommitteeChairEricLegreid(AirQualitySystems,Inc.).Success!Thehardwork of the entire group, but especially these three leaders, make it possible.

If you missed the seminar “Making Sense of Appraisals and Comps” that I mentioned last month, then our Evening Membership Meeting on April 1st will be a great way to get a brief overview. Kevin King of RASCW will be our featured speaker and will educate us on how we can better use the MLS and our Realtors to help document home values and create better, higher comps to help us. Remember, whether you are a builder or if you do business with builders, you should know about this!

The Education Committee is planning their next education event, “How to Find and Be Found on LinkedIn,” Thursday, April 11 at 8 a.m. at the MABA conference room.

The next volunteer event will be Hammer With A Heart on Saturday, May 4. Volunteers and donations are still needed. Thanks to Al Terry (Stealth Security) and Dave Mills (ProBuild) for running this event. Please contact Al at 608-333-6592 to volunteer or donate.

Remember that this is the second year of our revised Brews, Brats and the Builders Association™ event. It will again be at Sprecher’s Brewery on Monday, May 6th. Each Member of Record is free but you must pre-register to get your free spot. Additional guests, or members at the door, are $20 each. Thanks to the Programs Committee and chair Angie Kieta (Alside Supply) for the arrangements.

Come on out — build each other up – and keep MABA strong by participating in these events!

The last news I need to share is that the MABA Board of Directors has ended our relationship with Laurie Kaiser who was serving as our Executive Director. If you are aware of a good candidate for the position, please have her or him get a resume to any member of the Executive Committee.

United States Congressman Sean Duffy from Wisconsin’s 7th District dropped by the February Board of Directors meeting and briefed board members on current events transpiring in Washington, D.C. Duffy’s visit took place in the weeks leading up to the sequestration deadline, which he correctly predicted would take place on March 1. Duffy, a member of the House Banking Committee, also advised that his committee will take up legislation reforming Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac later in the year.

Duffy is currently serving in his second term representing the area that covers most of Wisconsin’s Northwoods. Prior to being elected to Congress in 2010, he was the District Attorney for Ashland County and was a former member of the cast of MTV’s Real World – Boston.

Recently the Assembly Housing and Real Estate Committee convened for the first time this session to hear from the experts on the state of housing in Wisconsin.

WBA President Craig Rakowski and Executive Vice-President Jerry Deschane addressed the group and spoke to the condition of the housing economy and pitched the group on a few key changes. Rakowski and Deschane advocated for a six-year review of the UDC, changing the current wall bracing code, and income and property tax reductions.

In addition to Rakowski and Deschane, representatives of the Wisconsin Realtors Association, Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) and the Wisconsin Housing Alliance also briefed the committee.

Both Democrat and Republican members of the committee had good questions and the hearing provided some good information to committee members and the public.

A common theme that was stated by each speaker was that the housing economy is on the mend and recovering on a slow but steady pace.

On Saturday, May 4th, MABA members will team up on our 11th Hammer with a Heart renovation. The program helps local homeowners with much needed home repairs to improve unsafe and unhealthy living conditions in their homes. Over the last decade MABA volunteers have completed over $250,000 of repair work on the Hammer with a Heart homes!

The MABA project home this year goes to another very deserving homeowner! This homeowner is a two-time cancer survivor who has owned the home for 25 years. The homeowner’s next door neighbor was the MABA home for the 2009 Hammer with a Heart/MABA collaboration.

Get involved and feel good about it!

Who: MABA volunteers led by project coordinators Al Terry (Stealth Security, LLC) and Dave Mills (ProBuild).

What: Volunteer your labor to help a community member make much-needed home improvements such as replacing old windows that do not function or lock properly, replacement of unsafe outdoor railing and broken interior light fixtures.

Where: The house is located at 841 Ridgewood Way, Madison

When: Saturday, May 4, starting at 8 a.m. and going into the afternoon and until the repairs are done!

Interested in Volunteering? Notify Al Terry at 333-6592 or [email protected]

Monetary donations are also needed to purchase supplies. To make a financial contribution contact Al Terry.

April Is New Homes Month! Later this month, Governor Walker will sign an executive proclamation officially declaring April new homes month in Wisconsin. While this is the traditional time of year when groundbreaking takes off for new construction, it is also a great time to share with others the benefits of homeownership. The benefits are wide-ranging. Nothing packs a bigger local economic impact than homebuilding. Construction of 100 new homes creates more than 300 full-time jobs. Remodeling is also a key element to our economy, every $10 million in spent by consumers remodeling yields 111 jobs and $3 million in taxes and revenues for state, local and federal governments. Celebrate new homes month in April by spreading this news on what homeownership has meant to you!
