T he nicest time of the year – the summer holiday season – is upon us. Time for exploring, relaxing and

enjoying fine dining, to laze around on terraces, play sports or soak up some culture, and to enjoy

long days with one’s family. In short, it’s time to take a break from the daily grind.

According to the World Tourism Organisation, five per cent more Europeans went on holiday last year, and

a similar growth rate is expected this year. This is a clear indication that, after several lean years, the

economic climate is once again improving slightly. We saw the number of Brussels Airlines passengers rise

by as much as 10 per cent earlier this year. This summer, our destinations cater more than ever to

holidaymakers. Our new summer destinations of Seville, Sicily, Bari, Malta, Corsica, Krakow, Montpellier and

Athens were carefully selected for you, based on market research of holiday trends.

More than 3,000 motivated Brussels Airlines staff members will do everything they can to ensure your

Tangled limbs, twisted fabric and passion gone

wrong: that’s the theme of photographer Christy

Lee Rogers’ first solo show – a wonderful mix of

fashion and art. Shot on location in Las Vegas,

Rogers dressed pole dancers, swimmers and actors

in circus costumes and torn silks, then plunged them,

gasping and flailing, under water.

“I was inspired by Paris, the performances of the

Moulin Rouge, the old circuses, wild abandonment

and that feeling of letting go that explodes out of you

like you’re drunk with love,” says Rogers. “I imagined

living in Paris during the 1920s as a performer, with

no possessions except for your talent and art, and

how free, yet desperate, that would be.”

M y friends and I settle down at a restaurant table on the edge

of Saint Irene Square, where the sounds of a typical warm

Athenian Friday night fill the air. Dates canoodle on bar

stools, couples enjoy dinner by candlelight and lounge music provides

the soundtrack as families stroll down the pedestrianised streets. A flask

of clear tsiporo (Greek brandy) empties out into our glasses but instead

of saying the usual toast of geia mas, ‘to our health’, we wish each other

kalo kalokairi: ‘good summer’.

Verandas and outdoor spaces

are put to good use in Greece,

where a love of being outside is fed

by the love of summer. In fact, the

only other season worth greeting

someone over is winter. Greeks

tend to wish one another a ‘good

winter’ or kalo heimona around

October when the 35-to-40-degree days draw to an end.

There’s no need to mention autumn or spring. Winter, however short,

mild and Mediterranean, sums up the months that must pass to make it

to the warm days that bring us all outside again. Slowly but surely,

country and seaside cottages open up, ferries putter around the islands,

restaurants and cafés move their tables outdoors, and the sea sparkles

brighter than ever; a familiar time of change and rejuvenation.

Saint Irene Square is as fine an example as you could hope to find.

Until recently its buildings were boarded up and the Acropolis view

unnoticed as the city went through its first years of crisis. Words likes

‘troika’, ‘austerity’ and ‘bail-out’ littered conversations in cafés, leading to

discussions about unemployment, pay cuts and migration.

Around Athens, streets and squares became the scene of protest

as calls for change increased in volume. In time, fresh ideas,

entrepreneurship and a good old-fashioned leap of faith led to new

businesses opening up. The need for Athenians to do something more

than simply despair in the face of hardship resulted in inspiring pockets

of growth including Saint Irene Square, where new venues are now taking

their tables outside for the summer, attracting people with a yearning for

life to go back to the way it was pre-crisis.

As a neighbouring group happily clink their drinks to kalo kalokairi,

I realise the Greek saying also represents a feeling. It’s that first taste of

a sweet slice of a watermelon, or the shock of the cool, invigorating sea

against your skin on your first summer swim. It’s settling in at an ancient,

open-air theatre or cinema on a summer night. It’s sharing tsiporo with

friends in a pretty square. It’s the anticipation of good times.

In a time of crisis, those feelings are more important than ever, proof

that good weather brings good things to look forward to, no matter what.

Meanwhile, Athens is in transition. Change can happen but it takes time.

It can’t be any other way. Who doesn’t wish for a good summer? Perhaps

this tentative but growing sense of optimism will bloom in the sun.

A short stroll from the Cathedral and

Cappella Palatina, and equally bathed in

history, Palazzo Conte Federico is a truly

beguiling place. Stepping through its heavy doors,

guests are ushered into a world of lost grandeur

reminiscent of The Leopard, Giuseppe Lampedusa’s

memorable serenade to Sicilian aristocracy.

Above its double-arched Norman windows lies

the coat of arms of the imperial Hohenstaufen

family – a medieval German dynasty granted the

Kingdom of Sicily. The descendants of the original

owner still live in the Palazzo: Countess Alwine is a

champion swimmer, while a vintage red sports car

in the internal courtyard nods to the Count’s

passion for motor races like the Targa Florio.

Son Nicolò, meanwhile, is an impassioned

champion of the Palazzo’s history, whisking me

through an endless series of ornate interconnected

rooms from the Blue Salon to the Ballroom and

Armoury. During its days as a freemason’s house,

nationalist hero Garibaldi was once Grand Master

here, whilst a 12th century tower is one of the only

surviving parts of Palermo’s Punic-Roman city walls.

Passing sculptures and Baroque ceiling frescoes,

Nicolò ushers me into an eye-popping medieval

boudoir. The regal chamber can be rented out with

one of the palazzo’s wings, although most guests

are more than satisfied with an apartment off the

central courtyard.

The Marvuglia apartment comes replete with a

four-poster bed and kitchen thoughtfully stocked

Like most of Hannover, the Grand Hotel Mussmann was completely rebuilt at the end

of World War II. Conveniently opposite the train station it is clean and modern, and

guests are welcomed into a white marble lobby. But the 104 rooms and suites are

the real USP of this ever-so-slightly crazy hotel. Each is named after one of the ‘100

Heavens of Hannover’ and a photograph of a particular heaven (a lake/forest/park/

building, etc) sits next to your front door so as you head for your room you walk past

some of the tourist highlights of Hannover. And then when you get inside, the same

photo – blown up to massive proportions – hangs over your bed. It’s supposed to be

an idea inspired by the ceiling paintings in German castles, but it can prove a shock

in the night to wake up and find the Maschsee hovering overhead.

The rest of the room is very practical, opening up into a spacious wet-room

style bathroom and wardrobe area. And each bedroom has a comfortable leather

armchair, good free wi-fi and a big desk. This is a businessman’s hotel that has been

well thought out for maximum convenience, with just a little crazy on the ceiling,

which is never a bad thing. Rooms from €119.

In the heart of the Old Town, just a few

minutes’ walk from the Main Market

Square, the Orlowska Townhouse must

be Krakow’s most characterful place to

bed down. From the exquisite antique

furniture to the wooden staircase, every

aspect of the listed 17th-century building

whispers individuality, style and romance.

Each of the five guest apartments has

its own theme, and relates to the owner’s

family history: the Poet’s Apartment is

lined with aged paperbacks, beams and

Biedermeier furniture, while The Boudoir

Apartment offers rich drapes and a

wonderfully deep claw-footed bath. Two

T2’s soaring SlipstreamBrussels Airlines passengers are in for an extra-special treat when they fly in and out of

London’s Heathrow Airport later this year, because the newly rebuilt Terminal 2 is a proper

work of art. Designed by Madrid-based architect Luis Vidal, the building features an

undulating steel-frame roof that floods the space with natural light. The centrepiece is a

soaring sculpture by British artist Richard Wilson, which pays homage to the world of

aviation. Measuring 78 metres from one end to the other, Slipstream is one of the longest

permanent public sculptures in Europe. Crafted from finished aluminium and weighing

77 tonnes, it traces the path of a stunt plane carving its way through the sky, and eloquently

captures the thrill of flight. T2, named the Queen’s Terminal, will handle 16 million passengers

by the end of this year, and is set to become the London base of Brussels Airlines from

15 October (until then the airline will continue to fly into Terminal 1). Now, Slipstream will

greet passengers as it arches across the Arrivals and Departures halls.

Poland is famed for embracing the

bright lights of neon in its 1950s

heyday, when artists explored the

tube-and-gas medium with

extraordinary gusto and vigour. For

more than 20 years, neon was widely

used to illuminate Polish shopfronts,

cinemas and theatres, in colourful

defiance of the prevailing grim Cold

War culture.

Gradually the lights went out,

though, and this iconic artform was

in danger of being lost until

enterprising photographer Ilona

Karwinska decided to preserve its

national history. Together with

partner Dave Hill, Ilona set about

chronicling Poland’s surviving neon,

and in 2005 they opened the Neon

Muzeum in Warsaw, which now holds

an extensive collection of signs

created by the best architects and

graphic designers of their day.

The Neon Muzeum, situated in the

Soho factory building in Warsaw’s

arty Praga district, is open from

Wednesday to Sunday. Special tours

can be arranged by appointment.

The mural of the storyArtist Jessica Darch is well known across Spain’s

Costa del Sol for her marvellous murals. With

work gracing many a poolside, rooftop terrace

and elegant interior, she can usually be found

halfway up some scaffolding, applying painterly

detail to her tailor-made designs.

Working closely with clients to explore and

reflect their personal styles, Darch creates flights

of fancy to fit their living spaces. Having trained as an architect in London helps. “I never fail to be thrilled by

the sheer scale of a blank wall,” she says. “It lends itself to infinite possibilities.”

Darch has created murals in the Bahamas, Germany, Italy and England as well as her native Spain. And

when she’s not painting walls, she can be found creating more portable pieces of art in her Estepona studio,

It’s still just a project-in-progress but that hasn’t stopped London’s proposed Garden Bridge

from garnering a level of public enthusiasm that looks set to eclipse the nursery rhymes,

urban myths and 1960s soundtracks inspired by the city’s other famous river crossings.

There hasn’t been this much bridge talk in London since the Millennium Bridge wobbled

on to the scene in the summer of 2000.

The idea for the proposed 367m planted pedestrian crossing designed by 2012 Olympic

cauldron creator Thomas Heatherwick has the support of the government, Transport for

London and numerous private donors. In March, Heatherwick announced that fundraising for

the bridge was within sight of its £150m (€188m) target, having hit £110m (€138m).

The bridge will link Temple with the South Bank,

providing Waterloo commuters with a verdant passage,

landscaped by renowned garden designer Dan Pearson, to

the City. It will give Londoners an innovative new green

space, while tourists will get a world-class green attraction.

Local support for the initiative is high: a recent survey

reveals that 88% of Londoners are in favour of the bridge,

with many enthusiasts likening the proposal to New York’s

successful disused-railroad-turned-linear-park, the High Line.

There’s still a long way to go, however, before Heatherwick’s vision can take its place in the

capital’s cityscape. The Garden Bridge Trust, a charity set up to promote and source funding

for the initiative, is seeking planning permission from both Westminster and Lambeth, along

with the rest of the funding required to ensure the project can open as planned in 2017 and

The lions approach without a sound, edging stealthily towards me. The

first I know of their arrival is when I look up from my laptop to see seven

sets of amber eyes staring at me.

Perhaps the previous month spent camping in predator territory in the

heart of the Ugandan wilderness has desensitised me to the presence of

predators. Anyway, it would be melodramatic to panic now. If the lions

were hungry they would have swallowed me hours ago.

Some might say that it would be appropriate punishment for someone

who’d chosen to stare into a computer monitor

while Kidepo, one of the most stunning reserves in

all Africa, lay spread out across the savannah

before him. But as a volunteer for the MAPA

I’m here with a mission to complete.

The MAPA project was started because very little

is actually known about Africa’s wildest areas. For

two years, teams of explorers in Land Rover

Defenders have been travelling up through Africa, charged collectively

with the ambitious task of mapping every single driveable road and dirt

track in every protected reserve on the continent.

With photographer Eric Nathan, it’s now my job to put Uganda’s

protected areas on the map. We land in Kigali, Rwanda and pick up the

Land Rover Defender, which is fully expedition-prepared. It has long-

range fuel tanks, buffalo-proof bull bars, a lion-proof roof tent and a

refrigerator stacked with steaks and slabs of local Bell beer. This is the

2000 model – a few years before it had a brand new 2.5-litre, five-

cylinder in-line turbo-diesel engine put in. Many safari aficionados count

the Defender as the best safari vehicle ever seen and the Landy’s Td5

engine can be counted on to power us over everything that the African

wilderness can throw at us.

Accustomed as I am to long-distance safaris, I’m well aware that Africa

has a habit of throwing the best-laid plans into turmoil. There is an edge

of uncertainty to this adventurous safari – a delightful tinge of

anticipation and trepidation absent from our workaday lives.

We drive from Kigali to the Ugandan border in a

single long day that effectively sets the pace for the

following weeks. We leave the vehicle parked at a

base camp while we map the walking trails through

the tangled gorilla country of Mgahinga National

Park and the appropriately named Bwindi

Impenetrable Forest.

Eric and I map countless uncharted trails, past

the predators of Ishasha Wilderness Camp and

through the immense herds of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The Land

Rover grips and growls its way through the bush, eating up the extreme

conditions with ease. Tanks of petrol are strapped to the back of the car,

rattling around as we dip and rise over the bumpy grounds.

Several nights in a row we hear lions and hyenas hunting around our

camp. We abandon the trusty Landy again to trek among chimpanzees in

the Kyambura Game Reserve. We map the remotest entry points to the

mysterious Mountains of the Moon and the parks along the hippo-

infested shores of Lake Albert. At Murchison Falls we find ourselves so

deep in the wilderness that nightfall forces us

to set up camp amid the angry snorts of several

hundred restless buffalo.

We’ve mapped 14 national parks and driven

more than 5,000km (only about 250km of it on

tarmac) by the time we reach Kidepo Valley

National Park – the end point of our journey

and Uganda’s most remote reserve. The light is

fading fast as our Defender rumbles down

Morungole Ridge at Kidepo. It’s taken two days

of non-stop driving to get here from Murchison

Falls and we’re sweaty, hungry and exhausted.

The car is a different matter: although I’m at

the wheel, this mechanical beast is practically

driving itself, careening around corners and

raring to go, despite the fact we can barely

keep our eyes open.

With more accessible parks like Queen

Elizabeth and Murchison packed to capacity

with wildlife, few visitors ever make it this far.

Perhaps that’s why these lions are so intrigued

by me: a two-legged creature pecking away at a

laptop in the campsite on their territorial kopje.

As night falls we barbecue some sausages

on our campfire. While the big black-maned

male maintains his vigil on a high rock outcrop,

the seven lionesses amble closer and closer,

eventually flopping on to the grass for a snooze.

Later that night I zip myself into my tent to

the roars on the savannah. The plaintive bellow

of a buffalo fighting for its life in the African

night is a sound that stays with you long after

you have departed the continent for the

Fireworks, pulsating light shows, big-name DJs performing under

giant toadstools… This month the Belgian town of Boom goes down

the rabbit hole as larger-than-life dance music festival Tomorrowland

throws its mammoth 10th birthday bash. Clodagh Kinsella reports

revellers – but by 2011, when it expanded

to three days, 180,000 visitors from

around the world were massing on Boom’s

scenic De Schorre recreation ground.

“Tomorrowland is a hugely big deal.

It manages to attract the crème de

la crème of mainstream EDM DJs and

also more underground names,” says

Marcus Barnes, author of Around the

World in 80 Raves.

Besides offering a killer line-up of EDM –

electronic dance music, the chart-topping

genre known for its insanely catchy vocals

and propulsive beats – Tomorrowland has

long hosted mega DJs from nearby Holland

like inaugural headliner Armin van Buuren,

and international superstars including

David Guetta and Moby. But impressive as

its roster always is, visually Tomorrowland

is in a league of its own: “The attention to

detail as far as production goes is truly

name DJs rocking the main stage,

backdropped by gob-smackingly over-the-

home. For non-initiates, it’s hard to grasp

just how immense Tomorrowland is: last

year’s festival sold 180,000 tickets in one

second, and hosted visitors from more

countries than the 2012 Olympics.

The Belgian mega-festival began in

2005, when canny music-loving brothers

Manu and Michiel Beers got together

with Dutch entertainment company ID&T.

among those amazing fairytale stages.”

Each year the decorations for the main

stage – the largest and most extravagant

of its kind in the world – revolve around a

phantasmagorical theme. Past editions

have included Alice in Wonderland, with

giant toadstools, waterfalls and oak trees,

and the organic Arising of Life, with a huge

volcano. So much effort goes into creating

the décor that anyone caught tampering

with it is escorted off-site.

When all that gets too much, frazzled

attendees can relax by taking a paddleboat

on one of the site’s lakes, or heading to the

Chapelle Chartelle, equipped with a bed

and ‘nuns’ keeping watch outside. Brussels

Airlines will again be on site with the

spectacular Cloud Rider, a ferris wheel

offering breathtaking views over the

festival. Further luxuries include superior

chow from star Belgian chefs Wout Bru and

Bart De Pooter and an on-site bakery.

It’s touches like these that have helped

Tomorrowland hang on to its independent

spirit despite its soaring popularity. While

festivals like Coachella have devolved into

celebrity hangouts, Tomorrowland has

guarded its mystique – a fact recognised in

2012, when it won Best Music Event at the

International Dance Music Awards. That

same year Tomorrowland partnered with

Brussels Airlines to arrange exclusive travel

packages from more than 15 cities, while

a Tomorrowland After Movie capturing the

magic of the previous year’s event racked

up 110 million YouTube views – a staggering

reflection of the festival’s global appeal.

For its 10th birthday, Tomorrowland is

pulling out all the stops. Besides hosting

the second edition of its US sibling

TomorrowWorld – held in Chattahoochee

Hills, Atlanta, in September – it’s throwing

a one-off double edition at home on 18-20

and 25-27 July.

Tickets for both weekends, which

feature the same line-up, sold out in less

than an hour. Confirming Tomorrowland’s

status as the United Nations of festivals,

than 220 different countries – thousands

having arrived on special Brussels Airlines

flights. MTV is producing two hour-long

specials (to be aired in August) and a

documentary about the festivities.

While the main stage itself will play host to

a bombastic who’s who of EDM –Afrojack,

Avicii, Skrillex and Tiësto – Tomorrowland’s

15-odd stages will also make room for

up-and-coming locals like Belgian drum

and bass DJ Netsky, who used to jump the

gate in his youth. “I’ve played the festival

several times and it’s always so much fun,”

he says. “The crowd cheers when they hear

Voor wie nog nooit naar het festival is geweest: het is moeilijk om te vatten hoe groot Tomorrowland wel is: vorig jaar vlogen de 180.000 festivalkaartjes in 1 seconde de deur uit en verwelkomde het meer nationaliteiten dan de Olympische Spelen van 2012.

De eerste editie van het Belgische megafestival vond plaats in 2005 toen sluwe muziekliefhebbers Manu en Michiel Beers de handen in elkaar sloegen met het Nederlandse entertainmentbedrijf ID&T. t could be a scene from Finding Nemo: two-metre-

long conger eels, deep red sea scorpions, electric

rays, super-sized squid, octopuses, rainbow-striped

wrasse fish and a plethora of brightly coloured sea

anemones in red, yellow, pink and purple give this

magical underworld kingdom just off the Algarve a distinctly

Technicolor feel. Welcome to Ocean Revival, a remarkable new

sub-aqua wonderworld where hundreds of species of sea life have

made their home.

Here scuba divers have the chance not just to mingle with

a fascinating array of undersea creatures but to explore an underwater

graveyard of historic sunken warships. The largest venture of its kind

in the world, Ocean Revival acquired and sank four decommissioned

Portuguese Navy ships with the intention that the vessels would act

as a magnet for the marine fauna of the Atlantic.

The plan has worked perfectly, and the wrecks have now been

colonised by dozens of species of fish and hundreds of different types

of invertebrate marine animals. The facility – covering a square

kilometre, three kilometres off the Algarve coast – offers scuba divers

easy access to these fascinating wrecks. The seabed is just 30m down,

leaving the vessels’ bridges six to 17m below the ocean surface.

Because there is still abundant natural light at this depth, it is those

upper parts of the ships which attract the richest sea life. Perhaps the

most surprising aspect is the huge variety of colour. Some 30 to 40

species of ultra-colourful orange, yellow, red, blue and pink sea slugs,

multi-coloured trigger fish, red, orange and green blennies, neon-hued

shrimps and yellow-spotted orange groupers provide magnificent

company for divers in these clear waters.

It’s also possible to watch some wildlife in action – hungry

octopuses closing in on a hapless crab, or shrimps cleaning the mouth

of a conger eel, or even two silver sea bass getting cosy. For the very

patient, the shrimps will think that your fingers are some sort of weird

fish – and will try to clean them. Other park residents worth seeing are

the lobsters, moray eels, sea horses, sea bream, sea cucumbers, sea

urchins, crabs and spectacular damselfish and sea perch that dance

like ballerinas.

Although the four ships were only sunk between late 2012 and

September 2013, they have already been colonised by large numbers

of marine fauna and huge quantities of ocean flora. A cheap and

easily accessible place to experience sea life and just 50km from

Faro, the park welcomed 3,000 scuba divers in 2013 in its first year

of operation, and double that number are likely to visit this year –

mostly from Spain, Portugal and Great Britain, but also increasingly

from Germany, Scandinavia, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium,

France, Russia and Poland.

Quite apart from the marine life, the sunken ships are themselves

impressive and historically important. Scuba divers can swim around

the exteriors of the vessels and also explore their interiors, including

control rooms complete with radar screens, engine rooms, kitchens,

mess rooms and even the captains’ quarters. For safe exploration,

additional entrance and exit points have been created.

The oldest of the vessels is the Hermenegildo Capelo, built in the

1950s for the French Navy but sold to the Portuguese in the 1960s. In

its day it was one of the Portuguese Navy’s most important military

assets, and carried out missions around Africa. The ship is said to have

crossed the equator at least 60 times.

Also involved in support work associated with Portugal’s business in

Africa, the Oliveira e Carmo is the second-largest sunken vessel in the

park. It was built in the early 1970s and was later used as an escort

vessel in NATO operations.

The third-largest wreck, the oceanographic survey vessel Almeida

de Carvalho was acquired from the US Navy by the Portuguese in 1972

and used for hydrographic survey work in remote parts of the world.

With a specially designed ultra-robust hull, it operated in the iceberg-

infested waters of the Arctic and Antarctic. The smallest wreck is that

of a Portuguese Navy patrol vessel the Zambeze, which was built in

1973 and operated in the Atlantic. While the ships, at the end of their

working lives, were donated by the Portuguese Navy, the park has cost

€2m to establish. The expensive part of the operation was to clean the

vessels and make them environmentally safe.

Hundreds of kilometres of electrical cabling had to be removed,

as did tonnes of asbestos. Fittings made of potentially harmful

materials like zinc and copper also had to be located and systematically

removed. Layers of grease had to be scrubbed off all the mechanical

equipment on board, and all remaining traces of oil had to be expunged.

All but one of the vessels’ nine giant guns were detached and disposed

Welkom bij Ocean Revival waar twee meter lange zeepalingen, dieprode zeeschorpioenen, sidderroggen, gigantische inktvissen, octopussen, lipvissen met regenboogstrepen en tal van kleurrijke, rode, gele, roze en paarse zee-anemonen in dit magische onderwaterrijk vlakbij de Algarve voor dat extra beetje technicolor zorgen.

Duikers kunnen hier niet alleen zwemmen tussen de brede waaier aan onderwaterwezens; ze kunnen er ook talrijke gezonken oorlogsschepen verkennen. Nergens ter wereld vindt u meer schepen dan in Ocean Revival, dat vier gezonken Europese oorlogsschepen op de kop kon tikken die als magneet zouden dienen voor de marine fauna van de Atlantische Oceaan.

Het opzet werd een groot succes en vandaag vormen de scheepswrakken de thuisbasis van tientallen vissoorten en honderden verschillende types ongewervelde zeedieren.

De faciliteit, die een vierkante meter beslaat drie kilometer voor de kust van de Algarve, biedt duikers een gemakkelijke toegang tot deze fascinerende wrakken. De zeebodem bevindt zich slechts op 30m diepte, de scheepsdekken op zo’n 6 tot 17m onder de oceaanoppervlakte. Op deze diepte is er veel natuurlijk licht, waardoor het vooral de bovenste gedeeltes van deze schepen zijn die het meeste zeeleven aantrekken.

Behalve het vele mariene leven, zijn de schepen op zich – ze zonken stuk voor stuk tussen eind 2012 en september 2013 – indrukwekkend en historisch belangrijk. Duikers kunnen in en rond de wrakken zwemmen en zo de controlekamers met radarschermen, de machinekamers, de keukens, de hutten van de bemanningsleden en zelfs die van de kapiteins bewonderen. Om alles in alle veiligheid te laten verlopen, werden extra ingangs- en exitaanduidingen toegevoegd.

De schepen werden aan het einde van hun dienstjaren gedoneerd door de Portugese zeemacht. Het park zelf kostte €2 miljoen euro. Het duurste van het project was echter het reinigen van de schepen en het milieuvriendelijk maken ervan. Ocean Revival is ’s werelds nieuwste en grootste in zijn soort en wordt verwacht om ten minste (maar waarschijnlijk veel langer) een eeuw mee te gaan.

Bienvenue chez Ocean Revival, peuplé de congres de deux mètres de long, de scorpions rouges des profondeurs, de raies électriques, de calamars géants, de pieuvres, de labres aux rayures arc-en-ciel ainsi que d’une pléthore d’anémones de mer de couleurs vives – rouge, jaune, rose et violet… Bienvenue dans un royaume sous-marin en « Technicolor » au large des côtes de l’Algarve.

Ici, les plongeurs ont la chance non seulement de se mêler à une population magique de créatures du fonds des mers mais également d’explorer des épaves de vaisseaux de guerre. Plus grand projet de ce genre au monde, Ocean Revival a acquis quatre anciens navires de la Marine portugaise et les a coulés afi n qu’ils deviennent des pôles d’attraction pour la faune marine de cette région de l’Atlantique.

Et le plan a fonctionné à merveille : ces épaves ont déjà été colonisées par des dizaines d’espèces de poissons et des centaines d’animaux marins invertébrés.

Le parc aquatique, couvrant une zone d’un kilomètre carré, à trois kilomètres de la côte d’Algarve, offre aux plongeurs un accès facile à ces épaves fascinantes : le fond marin est à seulement 30 m et les ponts des navires se situent tous entre 6 et 17 m sous la surface de l’océan. Vu la grande quantité de lumière naturelle à cette profondeur, ce sont les parties supérieures des bateaux qui attirent la vie marine la plus riche.

Mis à part la faune aquatique, les navires – tous coulés entre fi n 2012 et septembre 2013 – sont des bâtiments historiques impressionnants. Les plongeurs peuvent aller en exploration à l’intérieur des épaves et découvrir leurs salles de contrôle équipées d’écrans radars, leurs salles des machines, leurs cuisines, leurs salles à manger et même les cabines des capitaines. Des points d’entrée et de sortie supplémentaires ont été créés afi n de permettre une exploration en toute sécurité.

Arrivés en fi n de vie, ces navires furent donnés à l’organisation par la Marine portugaise, mais la création du parc a toutefois coûté 2 millions €. Le nettoyage des navires et leur décontamination pour la protection de l’environnement ont représenté un des investissements les plus importants. Ocean Revival, qui est le plus grand parc aquatique de ce genre au monde, prévoit de survivre au moins un siècle, et sans doute plus longtemps encore.

of. Finally, after two years’ worth of scrubbing, scraping and cleaning, the

vessels were be towed into position, ready for scuttling. Ultra-high

temperature explosive charges were used to blow holes in the hulls of the

four vessels to allow them to sink rapidly in an upright position to the

bottom of the Atlantic. Each sank in less than two minutes in a half-

kilometre line, like a phantom convoy of warships.

Ocean Revival is the newest and largest underwater park in the world

and is expected to survive for at least a century. A whole mini-fleet of

historic ships has been saved from the breaker’s yard and given a new

lease of life. No wonder it is a magnet for the world’s 10 million scuba divers.

Malta is like a bible of time. The ‘mainland’ of the three Maltese

Islands is where I was born and where I chose to make my home in a life spent

travelling around the world giving lectures and seminars. I have travelled so much

over the years; some years so many miles, I could have gone to the moon and

back. It is my privilege to call this little island – which does not exist on some maps

of the world or for TV stations that show the weather in Europe – my home, a place

I have an attachment to.

The modern name of Malta derives from ‘Malitah’, an Arabic corruption of

the classic Graeco-Roman ‘Melita’. Malta, with a population of more than 430,000

over only 132 km2 is one of the most densely populated places on the planet. So

what is it about this small, heavily populated island that draws me and thousands

of others not only to visit, but to stay?

On Malta there is a higher concentration of history than anywhere else in the

world, and this is probably its oldest civilisation. Interestingly, the island’s history

can be traced back to between 4,000 and 2,000 years BC. Because of its excellent

climate, the forces of erosion have not played havoc with ancient monuments

Author, inventor and father of lateral thinking, at the age of 81, Edward de Bono has just launched his latest initiative, The Palace of Thinking. Deeply concerned about the problems facing

the world, he believes humanity is desperately in need of a new approach. A native of Malta, he explains why the island is home to his new project and what it means to him

in Malta as they have in so many other

ancient sites around the world.

Until recently, the pyramids in Egypt

were thought to be the oldest monuments

in existence. Archeological research

carried out over the past few years has

shown that the earliest neolithic temples

on Malta are 1,000 years older than the

pyramids. The oldest free-standing building

in the world is the Stone Age temple called

Gigantija on Gozo, Malta’s sister island.

Built in 3,600 BC, it is evidence that

a civilisation existed – and yet Gozo is

even smaller than Malta.

There are many places around the world

which offer sun and sand, but Malta is

different. The landscape is definitively

dramatic and the coastline echoes the

island’s colourful and violent history,

although the tranquility of the beaches

today belies their violent past.

The variety of food in Malta is wonderful

and, just like the language, it is a mixture

of influences: Italian, French, British and

Arabic collide in a cacophony of herbs and

spices. Still, it is the potency of Maltese

history I find most fascinating.

The island history speaks volumes.

than anywhere in the world. We have

always been a source of fascination

to other cultures over the centuries.

Phoenicians and Romans made Malta

their home at the end of the Punic wars:

the Roman remains in the Roman Domus

in Rabat are quite marvellous.

The Arabs followed the Romans, after

which there was a Norman conquest from

Sicily. For a while the Normans, Angevins

and Aragonese were in control of the island

and there are some buildings said to be

Norman in the walled city of Mdina, the old

capital city of Malta and one of Europe’s

finest examples of an ancient walled city.

Silent City’, home then and now to Malta’s noble families. Its history stretches back more

than 4,000 years. Known for its timeless atmosphere, its enchanting walls almost whisper

to each visitor and passer-by to be silent for a moment and listen. Legend has it that it was

here, in around 60 CE (Common Era) that the apostle St Paul lived after his historical

shipwreck on the island. Mdina was said to have been built by the Arabs and is a tiny city

with a cathedral and fewer than three hundred inhabitants completely enclosed by

bastions, most likely built by the Knights of Malta. Impressive palaces line the narrow

shady streets.

This rich history is the reason I chose my main home in Malta to be in the town of

Rabat, just outside Mdina. Rabat means ‘suburb’ in Semitic, as indeed it was once

a suburb of Mdina. Outside on my terrace I can glimpse the magic of the Mdina bastions

and the cathedral, and this beautiful view helps me to think and write.

Malta has a history of bringing nations together. It is a place where East and West meet

and merge culturally, linguistically, geographically and politically. Perhaps it all began with

the Knights of Malta, probably the only truly international organisation in history. The

Knights Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem were formed by members of noble families

throughout Europe and Russia. They started out in the Holy Lands running hospitals to

care for pilgrims, but were forced out of Jerusalem by the Ottomans into Rhodes. In time

the Ottomans drove them out of Rhodes too, and eventually the king of Spain gave them

Malta in return for one falcon a year (the famous ‘Maltese Falcon’).

I have many memories of my island. During World War II, I remember my father digging

an air-raid shelter in my grandmother’s garden in Rabat – he wanted us to be safe from

the bombings around the harbour areas. During the excavation we came across the tomb

of a noble Phoenician lady. The contents were placed in a museum and her tomb became

our air-raid shelter. There were as many as ten air raids every night. More bombs were

dropped on Malta in one month than during the entire Battle of Britain. The Axis Powers

wanted Malta because it stood between them and complete control of the Mediterranean.

But this stoic little island endured.

I attended school at St Edward’s College, which during the war was moved to what is

now the Cathedral Museum in Mdina. We moved around a lot because of my father’s work

– he was a professor of medicine – living in Attard, Rabat, Ta’ Xbiex, Sliema and St

Julian’s. At the age of 21 I moved to Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar.

But I always came back, and now I divide my

time between Rabat and London. In April I set up

my newest initiative in Malta. The Palace of Thinking

is to be based at the Corinthia Palace Hotel in

Attard, which was for a time my family home when

I was seven.

The idea of this initiative is to be a source of new

ideas relating to world issues and problems. Human

thinking even at the most senior level has not moved

much beyond caveman thinking. This usually means

recognising a standard situation and then providing

the standard response, like a doctor in a clinic

diagnosing the standard disease and providing the

Je suis né sur « la plus continentale » des trois îles maltaises, c’est là aussi que j’ai posé mes valises au gré d’une vie passée en voyages autour du monde, donnant des conférences et des séminaires. Tout comme la langue, la cuisine maltaise est traversée par de nombreuses infl uences – un mélange d’italien, français, britannique et arabe, sur un lit d’herbes et d’épices. L’histoire de l’île remonte entre 4.000 et 2.000 ans av. J-C, ce qui en fait une des plus anciennes civilisations. Et grâce à son excellent climat, ses monuments anciens n’ont pas subi les dommages de l’érosion comme c’est le cas dans bon nombre de sites antiques autour du monde.

La recherche archéologique a montré que les premiers temples néolithiques de Malte furent construits mille ans avant les pyramides. À Gozo, une des îles de l’archipel, se trouve un des plus anciens bâtiments du monde, un temple de l’âge de pierre appelé Gigantija. Érigé en 3.600 av. J-C, il atteste de la présence d’une civilisation à Gozo, alors une île plus petite que Malte.

De nombreuses destinations dans le monde offrent le soleil et la plage – mais Malte est différente. Elle se démarque par un paysage vraiment spectaculaire et un littoral tourmenté par les confl its. Mais aujourd’hui le contraste est saisissant. En témoignent les plages tranquilles...

J’étais un jeune garçon durant la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale, et je me souviens avec précision des raids nocturnes aériens. On recensait pas moins de dix attaques chaque nuit ! L’Allemagne et l’Italie convoitaient Malte vu sa position et le contrôle qu’elle pouvait leur apporter sur la Méditerranée.

À l’heure actuelle, je partage mon temps entre Rabat et Londres. En avril, j’ai monté mon dernier projet à Malte, le Palace of Thinking. Une plateforme globale de réfl exion exempte de toute appartenance politique ou religieuse, et non guidée par des intérêts particuliers. Son objectif est de trouver de nouveaux modes de pensées et des solutions innovantes aux défi s de notre époque. Ik werd geboren en vestigde me op het ‘vasteland’ van de drie Maltese eilanden tijdens een leven van reizen rond de wereld om lezingen en seminaries te geven. Net zoals de taal kent de Maltese keuken tal van invloeden en vormt het een mix van Italiaanse, Franse, Britse en Arabische gerechten op een bedje van kruiden en specerijen. De geschiedenis van het eiland gaat terug tot 4.000-2.000 jaar v.C. en is hoogstwaarschijnlijk ’s werelds oudste. Dankzij het uitstekende klimaat werden de geschiedkundige monumenten van Malta niet door erosie aangetast zoals dat wel het geval is bij zo vele andere historische gebouwen wereldwijd.

Uit archeologisch onderzoek is gebleken dat de vroegste neolithische tempels op Malta zo’n 1.000 jaar ouder zijn dan de piramiden. Vandaag reis ik heen en weer tussen Rabat en Londen. In april lanceerde ik mijn recentse initiatief op Malta. The Palace of Thinking is een internationaal platform dat los staat van politieke, religieuze en gevestigde invloeden met oog op het vinden van nieuwe ideeën en vernieuwende oplossingen voor wereldwijde problemen. En om zoiets te bekomen heb je een neutraal plekje nodig zoals Malta. standard treatment. Many years ago at the UN in New York I tried to set up a

similar group to develop new ideas about world issues. But this proved

impossible because the people I approached were not there to think, they said,

but to “represent their countries”. To them this seemed a conflict of interest.

If the brain works in patterns, and all the evidence indicates that it does,

there is a logical need for creativity. I developed the formal process of lateral

thinking using reasoning and ideas that eschew traditional patterns of logic.

With The Palace of Thinking, we must break out of the old self-perpetuating

patterns and generate new ways of looking at things if we are to solve the

world’s most complex problems.

The Palace of Thinking will be a dedicated space where new ideas

can be generated and received, where creative solutions can be developed

and international collaborations can take place. By creating a global

platform free from politics, religion and vested interests, new thinking

and innovative solutions to global issues can emerge that will benefit us

collectively. And to do that it must be centred in a small neutral place such

as Malta, otherwise it risks being seen as reflecting the thinking and interests

of one particular country.

To this day, Malta remains the place where cultures meet and merge, a tiny

island in the big scheme of things; somewhere I am proud to call home.

eedling a path through the patchwork of historic

lanes surrounding Spaccanapoli – the ancient

cobbled street bisecting Naples – is an eye-

opener. Dark porticoes shelter countless

pizzerias and crumbling churches. Hearts enflamed by

the World Cup, young boys lob footballs across tiny

piazzas. Stop for a moment at one of the many outdoor

shrines to the Virgin Mary, and a moped piled high with

mother, son and toddler all wearing yellow SSC Napoli

shirts will narrowly miss you.

While this trade-off between dishevelment and

vitality is part of Naples’ compelling personality, over

the years the city had fallen too far from grace to still

be considered charming. Known at home and abroad as

dangerous and crime-ridden, it was also rubbish-strewn

due to a long-running waste-collection crisis. Poor

infrastructure and investment left it congested and

run-down. Visitors came to the southern Italian city

expecting a venerable dame and left thinking her

a shabby strumpet.

Since his election as mayor in 2011, Luigi de

Magistris has battled to clean up the city, solving the

rubbish-disposal problems and reducing congestion

in the traffic-choked centre. Visitors to the waterfront

– five kilometres of ‘the most beautiful promenade

inthe world’, as Magistris describes it – will find it

pedestrianised and free of those noisy mopeds.

The brightest symbol of change here is the ambitious

MetroNapoli project, which has transformed the city’s

neglected subway system into a giant underground art

exhibition. Aside from encouraging some of the city’s

one million inhabitants to leave the moto at home and

access the network of tunnels and metro, it’s helping

to usher in a real Neapolitan cultural renaissance.

Naples has long languished under its reputation for being crime-ridden, dirty and shabby. Now, thanks to a visionary mayor and some extraordinary public works of art, Darren Loucaides inds the city is

rediscovering a sense of civic pride and ambition, drawing tourists to the very places they once avoided

“This experiment is unprecedented in Italy and

is one of very few to be carried out worldwide,”

says Achille Bonito Oliva, one of the country’s

foremost art critics and former director of

the Venice Biennale. As curator of the

project, he has overseen the opening of 10

art stations. Six more are planned by the

time of the project’s completion in 2020.

“By definition, this is not simple decoration

or an architectural elaboration,” Bonito Oliva

adds, explaining that the 90 artists involved –

who include many big international names as

well as an impressive amount of local talent –

are interacting with pre-existing architecture

and transforming it.

The 180 or so artworks include installations,

photography, paintings and everything in

between. One of the highlights is Catalan

architect Oscar Tusquets Blanca’s incredible

escalator at Toledo station: it climbs through

glittering mosaics towards Robert Wilson’s

‘crater of light’, as if ascending to another

FR La nouvelle renaissance italienne Grâce à un maire visionnaire et de magnifi ques œuvres

d’art public, Naples est une destination en hausse, nous dit Darren Loucaides

Sur la Spaccanapoli – cette ancienne artère qui divise Naples en deux – des portiques abritent des églises en ruine. Lorsque vous vous y promenez soyez vigilant… Il se peut qu’une mobylette sur laquelle s’entassent trois personnes vous évite de justesse.

Autrefois désordonnée et pleine de charme, Naples s’est progressivement délabrée par manque d’infrastructures et d’investissements. En visite dans le sud de l’Italie, les voyageurs s’attendent à trouver une dame vénérable mais ils repartent avec l’image d’une pauvre mégère.

Le maire Luigi de Magistris mène un combat acharné pour faire de sa cité une ville propre. MetroNapoli, qui a contribué à transformer le métro urbain, alors sale et décrépit, en musée d’art géant, fait partie de ces projets qui stimulent la renaissance culturelle de Naples.

Ses quelque 180 œuvres comprennent des installations, de la photographie et des peintures. Parmi les pièces majeures, on recense l’incroyable escalator de l’architecte catalan Oscar Tusquets Blanca, à la station Toledo : entouré de carrés de mosaïques étincelants, il nous emmène jusqu’au « cratère de lumière » de Robert Wilson. Ensuite, il y a le royaume surréaliste de Karim Rashid à la station Université, avec ses formes brillantes rose fuchsia et vert citron ; son univers s’organise autour d’une sculpture en forme de synapse, en métal au fi ni satiné.

Étant donné que l’Italie est en pleine crise économique, d’aucuns ont tenté de comprendre la logique derrière cette dépense publique pour fi nancer un tel projet. Bien que les fonds proviennent de l’Union européenne, les fi nances de la ville sont dans une situation tellement critique que Magistris a dû œuvrer pour la sauver de justesse de la faillite.

Mais l’architecte offi ciel du projet, Renaldo Fasanaro, est persuadé que MetroNapoli est une partie de la solution. « C’est une réelle opportunité pour améliorer les zones dégradées de la ville, tant dans la banlieue que dans le centre, » dit-il.

« Nous donnons en outre à la ville un important héritage d’art public, » ajoute-t-il. « En cela, nous poursuivons une tradition qui renoue avec la période baroque, au moment où l’art abondait dans les rues et sur les places. »

In Spaccanapoli – de oude straat die Napels in tweeën deelt– schuilen tal van vervallen kerken achter de zuilengangen. Let op wanneer u er doorheen wandelt...of u wordt ei zo na meegesleurd door een bromfi ets volgestouwd met drie passagiers.

Het ooit verfomfaaide en charmante Napels geraakte in verval door gebrekkige infrastructuur en investeringen. Bezoekers kwamen naar de Zuid-Italiaanse stad afgezakt met de verwachting er een eerbiedwaardige dame te ontdekken en ze verlieten haar met het beeld van een armoedig viswijf.

Burgemeester Luigi de Magistris deed er alles aan om de stad op te waarderen. Het MetroNapoli project, waarbij het vervallen metronetwerk van de stad werd omgebouwd tot een reusachtig ondergronds kunstmuseum, luidt het begin in van een culturele renaissance.

In totaal betreft het zo’n 180 kunstwerken waaronder structuren, foto’s en schilderijen. Een van de hoogtepunten: de adembenemende lift van de Catalaanse architect Oscar Tusquets Blanca in het station Toledo: de lift klimt langsheen schitterende mozaiëken naar boven naar de ‘lichtkrater’ van Robert Wilson. In het Universiteitsstation wordt u dan weer verwelkomd door de surreëele, symbologische wereld van Karim Rashid in fuchsia, roze en limoengroen met als centraal element een synapsissculptuur uit staal met satijnglans.

De economische crisis heeft Italië helemaal in haar greep. Sommigen vragen zich dan ook af of het wel zin heeft om overheidsgeld in dit project te pompen. Hoewel het project wordt gefi nancierd door de Europese Unie, bevinden de fi nanciën van de stad zich sinds het uitbreken van de crisis in nauwe schoentjes en Magistris redde Napels op de valreep van het failliet.

Such discoveries are reminders of the

city’s rich history. It’s sad to see gorgeous

old churches containing precious frescoes

and opulent stone facades boarded up in one

of the oldest and largest historical centres in

the world. But Magistris has pledged €103m

for the restoration of buildings, and the art

stations are spearheading a cultural revival

in Italy’s third-biggest city.

Given that Naples and Italy as a whole are

in the grip of an economic crisis, some have

questioned the logic of public spending on

the project. Though funding has come from

the European Union, the city’s finances have

been in dire straits since the crisis and

Magistris narrowly saved it from bankruptcy.

But architect Fasanaro is certain that

MetroNapoli is part of the solution, not the

problem. “It is a chance to improve,

aesthetically and socially, run-down places

in the city, both in the suburbs and in the

centre,” he says, pointing to tourism initiatives

that have brought people and economic value

to under-privileged areas and opened them up.

“Local government understands the great

importance of the project,” he adds. “They

know the long-term economic benefits that a

functioning metro system and such public art

will bring for the city and its population.”

giving the city an enormous legacy of public

art,” he says. “We’re continuing a tradition

that connects with the art in the streets and

Having just passed a

years – Volvo has high hopes for its more powerful yet more

energy-efficient new version, built at the Swedish company’s

factory in Ghent, Belgium. As part of its globe-straddling

awareness campaign for the latest model, the two winners of

Brussels Airlines’ Flightball competition had the chance to try

the car out for themselves during the World Cup in Brazil.

Volvo’s game-changing technology does not end with a new

engine that manages to be both supercharged and turbocharged.

The company recently embarked on far more ambitious project,

called Drive Me, which involved putting 100 ordinary drivers in

self-driving vehicles on public roads in Gothenburg.

According to Volvo engineers, cars of the future will feature

factory fresh: Berlin’s tech hub opens

After four years of planning and construction – not to mention hype – Factory,

the 16,000-metre-square Berlin campus that hopes to attract start-ups and tech

firms from all over the world, is ready for business.

The official opening was held at the vast site mid-June, with a keynote speech

delivered by Google chairman Eric Schmidt, and tenants are expected to start

moving in this month. These include 6Wunderkinder, the local hero behind the

popular time management app Wunderlist; SoundCloud, the successful audio

distribution platform that was founded in Stockholm; and Mozilla, the software

community best known for its Firefox browser. Smaller companies which have

taken space include cloud-based helpdesk company Zendesk; Toast and

Merisier, two gift-service apps; and Ding Dong, a text-free messaging platform.

The Factory venture was spearheaded by local property developer and tech

investor Simon Schaefer, who says the idea was “to give start-ups the chance to

learn, fail and chill together as they grow. To enable entrepreneurs and innovators is our mission.” Berlin is ballooning as a start-up hub, with young

firms from Europe, Israel, the US and South America flocking to the city to take advantage of the cheap living costs and relaxed lifestyle.

Schaefer says Factory offers communal areas designed to foster collaboration, ranging from a single desk to 1,000-metre-square units. On site is

the Distillery, which he describes as an organic accelerator aimed at start-ups and founders at any stage, while help is available from experts in law,

finance, technology, design and branding. There is even the option of residency for designers, programmers and other contributors if they are

sponsored by one of Factory’s partners. Naturally, as this is Berlin, the campus includes a sauna and a beer garden.

Although Factory’s opening is a year later that expected, Schaefer’s enthusiasm for the project has not wavered. In addition to Berlin, he is looking

at other locations throughout Europe. Having participated in discussions with leaders of the European Commission’s Start-up Europe projects,

Schaefer says he is aware of a huge interest in this type of venture. “Factory would work well in many environments with high youth unemployment,”

he says. “I don’t want to name cities just yet, mainly because we really want to deliver on our first campus.”

affordable luxury sector, is not letting a few Wall

Street jitters get in the way of his global expansion.

With more than 80% of his sales coming from

the US, Kors has to expand abroad to keep up

momentum. The designer recently announced plans to

open 55 stores in Europe in the financial year to March 2015,

taking the total to 135. The eventual target is 200. Many think this

is smart – while Europe hardly lacks luxury labels, only Burberry

is regarded as accessible. In the UK, fashion writers have

practically campaigned for Kors to be knighted for delivering

this season’s ‘It’ bag for €370, a third of what these statement

accessories typically cost.

Kors believes his company can capitalise on a gap left by

LATER Wine lovers will enjoy the Vinothek at La

Merveilleuse (lamerveilleuse.be), but for

a radieuse and enjoy it overlooking the river.

TIP You can’t leave Dinant without trying

couques, which should be broken and dunked in

your coffee. They were invented in 1466 during

the Siege of Dinant when townsfolk only had

wrapped Airbus A330 aircraft. Brussels Airlines flight SN2014

departed Brussels for São Paulo with the Belgian Red Devils,

Your personal wellbeing on boardNowadays, for many passengers, fl ying regularly is part of life. However, the body is sensitive to change and fl ying still isn’t part of a normal daily rhythm. Brussels Airlines cares about your comfort, so here are a couple of hints on how to keep your body happy and healthy in the air.

Helena CostaA football manager with a very good track record, as varied and cosmopolitan as

the modern era demands: youth development work, scouting, coaching at

international level, all the boxes are ticked on this CV. This particular job applicant,

however, made history when French Ligue 2 side Clermont Foot appointed Helena Costa

as their new head in May.

It’s the highest level of professional football at which a woman has ever been given the job of running a men’s

senior first team. Portuguese-born Costa holds a Masters in Sports Science and a UEFA ‘A’ coaching licence. She

began her career coaching youth teams at

one of Lisbon’s great clubs, Benfica.

Later, the women’s game gave her the

chance to work with both Qatar and Iran

while, at the same time, scouting European

talent for Scottish giants Celtic.

Costa now faces her biggest challenge,

one that will inevitably play out in a glare of

publicity. It’s a challenge her journey thus far

suggests she – and her new club – are ready to

meet. For now, history can wait. There’s a new

football season to prepare for, after all: the job

The Commonwealth GamesThe hottest ticket of the month is the one that gets you

into the World Cup Final on 13 July. But right now those are rarer than gold dust. Yet

just a week after the biggest tournament of them all closes in Rio, the sporting world’s

attention switches to Glasgow (a 45-minute hop from Edinburgh Airport) and a global

event altogether more accessible in every respect.

The Commonwealth Games open on

23 July with a grand ceremony at the

place the locals call Paradise: Celtic Park,

home of Celtic FC. The Games run until

3 August, and 17 sporting disciplines will

be contested at 24 venues across the

city and in the immediate countryside.

While many of the Olympic and

World Championship big guns won’t

be involved, the level of competition

remains incredibly high. And the slightly

parochial Commonwealth dimension gives the Games a significantly more relaxed

feel. Some events will be accessible without tickets; others – like the track cycling at

the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome – will see tickets in great demand. The good news is that

the Games are an event that takes over the host city for the duration: just being in

Swim BrusselsThere may not be tours of the

loveliest swimming pools in

Brussels, but there should be,

as the experience would offer an

opportunity to travel back through a century of the city’s history.

There are few cities with as many pools as the Belgian capital:

19 in the city itself and a dozen more in the suburbs. Several are worth

visiting just to get a feel for times past: the oldest, built in 1904, is the

Piscine Communale d’Ixelles and still open to the public.

The art deco Piscine Victor Boin in St-Gilles is a decadent place

in which to take a dip, and the modernist masterpiece that is the

Neptunium in Schaerbeek will have swimmers back-stroking just to

take in its cathedral-like proportions. There’s also the very 1950s Bains

du Centre where you can swim three storeys up, overlooking the city.

Brussels has 50-metre pools too, of course, including the Piscine

Woluwe St Pierre, and a water park, the Océade, to the north of town.

The city lays claim to the world’s deepest indoor pool, although the

Nemo 33 has been designed for divers, not swimmers. Swim shorts

and bare heads are outlawed so men will need trunks and everyone a
