We createchemistrythat helps lush landscapes love thriving cities.

The construction industry currently accounts for about half of the world’s consumption of energy and resources. It’s a substantial amount - but it can be reduced, if you just add the right chemistry.

We’ve developed a number of solutions that make construction more mindful of the environment and buildings that are more durable and efficient throughout their life cycle. The result is that new developments are less taxing on our finite resources in the short and long term.

When we can build more while using less, it’s because at BASF, we create chemistry.

A annual report 2013

For ekonid, 2013 was another exciting and extraordinarily busy year; this report will give you a brief overview of the main activities.

the economic development of indonesia in 2013 was somehow mixed, with an overall downward trend: the Gdp still grew by 5,78 percent, but that was almost 1 percent lower than the figure the year before. indonesian exports slowed by 4 percent to usd 182 bil. (fob), while imports only slowed by 2,6 percent to usd 186 bil. (cif), leaving the country with a negative trade balance of usd 4 bil. substantial outflows of capital left indonesia with an overall negative balance of payments of 3,3 percent of Gdp which, together with an inflation above 8 percent, resulted in a significant depreciation of the indonesian rupiah of around 25 percent to the usd and a strong downward trend of the JCi stock index. Foreign direct investment in indonesia continued their positive development and grew year on year by 16 percent close to usd 30 bil. the indonesian – German bilateral trade volume slowed as well to approx. usd 8,58 bil, while German realized foreign direct investments reached an estimated value of usd 243 million according to deutsche Bundesbank.

nevertheless the interest of corporate Germany in indonesia continues to be high, which led to eight business delegations visiting the country in search for new business opportunities and partners. ekonid continued to support the growing number of companies looking to do business and contributed through its participation in 16 bilateral business promotion, information and outreach events in different cities in Germany. due to the elections in Germany, only two visits were conducted by ministers to indonesia, one by minister of economic development dirk niebel in January, and another by Foreign minister dr. Guido Westerwelle in February.

two additional event highlights of indonesia in Germany should be mentioned; the state visit of president yudhoyono to Germany in march, were ekonid was involved in organizing a business luncheon with the president, the German minister for economics and vice Chancellor dr. philipp rösler; the participation of indonesia as Guest Country at Bauma 2013, with a delegation of more than 300 indonesian participants, lead by minister of public Works djoko kirmanto. ekonid coordinated the presentation of indonesia throughout the last 1½ years and participated in high-ranking meetings between minister kirmanto and his counterparts in Germany, transport minister dr. peter ramsauer and Foreign minister dr. Guido Westerwelle.

our regular social and networking events took place throughout the year; with ekonid’s classics, such as Get together, Grünkohlessen, spargelessen, and summer party, as well as joint events with partners such as kadin and the indonesian German Circle (iGC) among others, in which business luncheons with trade minister Gita Wirjawan and Bkpm Chairman mahendra siregar were held.

in october, ekonid, together with the German embassy and other institutional and corporate (premium) partners (allianZ, BmW) organized the first Jerin Festival; a three day long culture and culinary outdoor festival that attracted around 10,000 visitors.

program related events were the Biomass Conference in may and the photovoltaic conference in september, each with more than 200 indonesian companies, jointly organized by ekonid and the GiZ.

two eu-funded projects that came to an end in 2013 should be highlighted: the eu-active project, together with the other european Chambers, that was intended to support the start the Comprehensive economic partnership agreement (Cepa) between indonesia and the european union, with its event highlight having been the eu-indonesian Business dialog (eiBd) in october; and the Clean Batik initiative (CBi), a four-year program in which ekonid successfully trained more than 500 indonesian batik producing companies in energy efficiency and marketing of their products.

in terms of strategic cooperation’s and developments, ekonid continued in 2013 to extend its activities in the field of training and education and started to implement the eu-indonesian Business network (eiBn), a platform funded by the european Commission, jointly developed and implemented with our european chamber partners, to improve market access and advocacy as well as business support and outreach for all european partners. Both programs are designed for a long-term strategic engagement of ekonid in these fields of activities.

all in all the year 2013 was one of the busiest years in our history: ekonid conducted or was actively involved in two hundred and twenty five (225) events throughout the year. it may well have been that on every working day of the year ekonid staff were either organizing a luncheon, a Get together, a conference, a seminar, a training or a festival.

our sincere appreciation and gratitude is dedicated to all our members, partners and clients, who have made ekonid’s work and success in 2013 possible through their continued and generous assistance and endorsements. this support, combined with the dedication of our highly motivated team, gives us the confidence to master all the challenges and opportunities ahead of us in the next year. thank you very much ! ■

4 annual report 2013

For over a century, the worldwide network of ahk offices has been representing reliable and trustworthy partners for corporate entry into foreign markets. ekonid is delighted to see the network growing, so we welcome our new member of the ahk-Family in myanmar.

in indonesia, ekonid, the German indonesian Chamber of industry and Commerce, is acting as a strategic interface between the German and indonesian economies. here we are representing the bilateral business interests of indonesian and German member companies and institutions. our core business is to support our members from both countries in pursuing new trade and investment opportunities.

in addition, as a member of the German-asean Chamber network (GaCn) our focus does not stop at indonesia’s borders. We are proud to act as an important partner to strengthen the regional cooperation within asean as well as to support trade and investments in the region. Being part of this platform for enterprises, especially smes, and political decision makers from the asean region, we are widening and promoting the exchange of knowledge for a trade and investment friendly environment. For our members, ekonid’s head-office in Jakarta serves as a meeting place and info centre, as well as the central-point to address inquiries and seek advice. more than 60 dedicated employees are supporting companies which are planning to do business in indonesia or that are already represented here. ekonid offers its members all services which are necessary to support them effectively for market entry or expansion here in indonesia. our services, which are labeled under the worldwide ahk-brand deinternational, ensure the uniformity of services, comparable offers and excellent advice. the service range offered by ekonid spans from market information to customized advisory service for market entry.

our services include e.g. business partner search, market information, legal information and corporate services, tax services, personal services and trade fairs. in addition ekonid also offers a range of services which go further and which can be always helpful. We have e.g. an in-house design agency which can assist you with your corporate communication here in indonesia!

also represented in the ekonid building is Germany trade and invest (Gtai), the foreign trade and inward investment agency of the Federal republic of Germany. Gtai promotes Germany as a business and technology location for investment and supports companies based in Germany with market information.

in surabaya, indonesia’s second largest city located in the east of Java, ekonid is represented at the “Wisma Jerman”. Wisma Jerman means German house and is a unique worldwide cooperation of the Goethe-institut and the German Chamber of Commerce and industry; you have there the German economy, culture and language under one umbrella. With the presence of ekonid in surabaya, German companies are enabled to be included in the interdisciplinary work of the Wisma Jerman. thus, events provide networking possibilities with several sectors and the representation of German as well as indonesian member companies in the region. ■

MEMBERSHIP& EVENTS

By the end of 2013, ekonid counted 432 members, which is a slight decline compared to the year before when we counted 440 members. our members are German and indonesian companies as well as individual members from various sectors like banking, chemical and pharmaceutical, electrical, engineering, construction, automotive and manufacturing. We are very pleased to see in our “new members”-category in indonesia not only 12 German companies, but to see especially the group of “indonesian companies in indonesia” growing. With 22 new companies in 2013 this was the most growing group of our members. at this point we would like to express all of our new members a very warm welcome in our community! We are looking forward to see you on our events in 2014.

Joining the chamber can help companies to grow their business by meeting the right decision makers or high profile people. as we know about the importance of networking opportunities our ekonid event team organized in 2013 a range of 21 events, from our monthly networking “Get together” in Jakarta and surabaya, the Joint european Business partner Gatherings to Business luncheons with high ranking government and corporate representatives as well as expert seminars and conferences. our networking events offered also in 2013 an informal platform to gain information and profit from other companies’ experiences, expand social and business contacts, develop business opportunities and meet with corporate and government representatives. it was again a very cost effective way to promote their services /products and gain new business contacts within the German-indonesian business society.

as in the last years our annually “Grünkohlessen” (Green Cabbage dinner), an all-gentlemen event with traditional north German cuisine, and the well appraised ekonid signature event “spargelessen” (asparagus dinner), with fresh flown-in asparagus and wines from Germany, attracted many members and friends and were once again some of the social highlight of the German – indonesian community. our event team is already thinking, which other event with the potential to become a “tradition”, can be established in the coming year to provide our members with another opportunity for gathering in a welcoming atmosphere! ■

BUSINESSDELEGATIONS

Pursuing opportunities and promoting collaboration between German and Indonesian companies

“renewables-Made in Germany” - ekonid and the GiZ have been closely working together in the renewable energy sector for over five years within the framework of the PEP SEA project. this partnership is supported by the German Federal ministry for economics and technology (BmWi). the year 2013 saw another successful implementation within the ”renewables – made in Germany“–export initiative through two major business delegation events in the fields of Biomass and photovoltaic hybrid (may and september 2013). Both events together attracted more than 250 high level participants from governmental institutions as well as the private sector, qualified experts and professionals shared know-how from their respective fields. in addition to providing the necessary market entry information and presenting the German technologies, ekonid organized potential business partner searches through B2B during match making and company visits for the 16 German participants joining the delegation programmes.

other highlights were several trade promotion delegation programs from German states throughout the year of 2013:

ekonid’s delegation schedule started with a delegation from the German state of Thuringia in march, comprising 11 companies from several sectors and led by thuringia’s state minister of economics, mathias machnig. expert briefings, various company visits and matchmaking meetings ensured a complete overall impression: investment possibilities, political framework and concrete business projects for the German companies.

at the occasion of the GREENRIGHT Green Building Exhibition and Conference in april 2013 in Jakarta a business delegation from baden-Württemberg was introducing “Green Building services and technologies from the German southwest“ to indonesia.

site visits within indonesia are always of special interest for German delegates. here, they can both network and gain an authentic impression of their future business partners, their way of manufacturing, service or logistics. the bremenports delegation in april 2013, led by Bremen’s senator for economic affairs, martin Günthner, comprised company delegates and representatives from research institutes and visited the ports of tanjung priok, Jakarta, ujung pandang, makassar and tanjung perak, surabaya.

Günther horzetzky, state secretary in the ministry of economic affairs, energy and industry of the state of north rhine-Westphalia and prof. dr. ulrich lehner, president of the düsseldorf Chamber of Commerce and industry conducting meetings with representatives from the investment Coordinating Board of indonesia (Bkpm), expert discussions as well as company visits to pt schenker petrolog utama in Jakarta and pt meco in surabaya have broadened the insight into specific sectors and showed up business opportunities

in indonesia.

another highlight in 2013 was the symposium – ”German Technology for Confectionery Production and Packaging” hosted by the German engineering Federation vdma in cooperation with ekonid. Fifteen established German companies presented their innovative product portfolio for processing and packaging of confectionery and pointed out the potential of improvement in terms of efficiency, flexibility and energy savings, by using high-tech machinery. they received an overwhelming response from the indonesian side, professionals representing all the major companies from the focus industry.

“Health – Made in Germany” aims to bring the strengths of the German health care industry to countries around the globe. the export initiative, launched by the Federal ministry of economics and technology (BmWi) in 2011, provides information, links partners, and paves the way for applying German know-how on an international scale. ekonid supported a technical event in november 2013, where selected medical equipment companies from Germany were given the opportunity to present their organization, product portfolio and respective training-services for medical staff to indonesian hospital directors, doctors, relevant associations and ministry representatives.

the year 2013 was another year of increased interest from German companies in the indonesian market with its opportunities for trade and investment. ekonid continues to promote bilateral economic relations, offering support to organizations in pursuing their business interests well into 2014 with another diverse business delegation schedule in place. ■

EIBDEU-INDONESIANBUSINESS DIALOGUE

Connecting European and Indonesian business leaders and deepening the ties between the EU and Indonesia

started in 2011, the aCtive project, co-financed by the eu Commission, was the product of a joint collaboration between the five european Chambers of industry and Commerce (iFCCi, ina, BritCham, euroCham and ekonid), kadin and indonesian sector associations.

under the lead of ina, all organizations worked together to strengthen the capacity of the indonesian business associations (kadin and the indonesian sector associations) to effectively lobby for the joint interests of the indonesian business community; and to improve the business climate in indonesia and ensure open trade and investment conditions.

the business associations are key drivers of improvement in the trade and investment climate. through its seven trainings on various topics (e.g. advocacy & concept development, new member services, event management), ekonid, together with ina and kadin, helped no less than six indonesian sector associations to equip for this role.

in parallel, ekonid took a coordinating role in the design and implementation of the action plan in the automotive sector. For more than two years ekonid, together with euroCham and Gaikindo (the association of indonesia automotive industries) organized working groups, workshops and seminars, conceptualized capacity building programs adapted to the industry’s needs, as well as prepared detailed position papers evaluating the existing trade and investment conditions in the sector and identify areas for growth. through the two years, ekonid enhanced the relationship between indonesian and european business and government stakeholders and during several Business-to-Government dialogues, gave the opportunity to representatives from the automotive industry to highlight to their respective governments where priority should be given.

direct results of the aCtive project were the two very successful eiBd; 2012 in Bali and 2013 in Jakarta. For both editions, the eiBd conference gathered no less than 250 to 300 participants. over the years, the eiBd has granted a forum where european and indonesian business leaders connect with each other as well as develop recommendations to improve the business climate and deepen the bilateral ties between the eu and indonesia. Both eiBd conferences therefore submitted very strong statements from the business community towards the signature of the Comprehensive economic partnership agreement between indonesia and the european union (to date still under discussion). ■

Supporting and Attracting EU Business in and to Indonesia:EKONID takes the lead of the EU-Indonesia Business Network

the eu-indonesia Business network (eiBn), initiated by the eu co-funded iCi+ program, was officially launched on november 12 in Jakarta. in line with the eu strategy to promote and support smes’ economic activities outside the eu, the eiBn seeks to develop further the business opportunities for european companies in the indonesian market. By promoting indonesia as a high potential trade and investment destination as well as providing hands-on business support to eu companies interested in expanding their activities in the country, the eiBn aspires to be the bridge between eu and indonesia to enhance economic activities and deepen bilateral relations.

the eiBn is a consortium partnership set up between seven chambers of commerce in indonesia and europe: ekonid – lead implementing partner, BritCham, iFCCi, ina, euroCham indonesia, euroChamBres (Brussels) and CCi Barcelona. the eiBn is one of two complementary components supported under the 5-year eu project. the second part of the program supports euroCham in enhancing analysis and advocacy to improve market access of european companies to the indonesian market. the two components will closely work together in developing new opportunities for trade and investment by providing accurate and timely information to eu businesses on conditions for trading and investing in indonesia as a gateway to asean and also by establishing an environment conducive for policy dialogue and business networking.

the eiBn can rely on its good cooperation with the european embassies and business organizations in Jakarta: support to various european companies already started. in the near future, the eiBn will launch an extensive web-portal featuring all information relevant to doing business in indonesia as well as in depth sector information. in parallel, the eiBn will participate in several events in the eu to promote indonesia as a high potential trade and investment destination. the eiBn also aims at strengthening its cooperation with the various european and asean stakeholders in the region in order to help develop a comprehensive european market access strategy in asean. ■

CBI Retrospective

the Clean Batik initiative (CBi) is considered to be the first and most comprehensive development assistance project for the batik industry in indonesia. CBi provided smes with training on environmentally friendly methods of batik production and also aimed to enhance the marketing of batik products by smes that had successfully implemented cleaner production processes. CBi also lobbied government agencies in relation to cleaner production policies and sustainable consumption of batik. With the aim of promoting a switch from unsustainable to sustainable patterns of development, CBi attempted to address these multi-dimensional issues through three program components, namely sustainable production (sp), sustainable Consumption (sC) and policy dialogue (pd).

the program has been implemented as planned in six indonesian provinces (east kalimantan, south sulawesi, east Java, Central Java, West Java, and di yogyakarta). CBi realized its target of reaching over 500 smes for assistance by local technical consultants.

to achieve this ambitious goal, a comprehensive program socialization strategy had to be developed and implemented. Before introducing the program in each province, careful planning and numerous courtesy visits were needed. it was of utmost importance to involve regional government agencies, local associations, and government institutions as well as village heads and spiritual leaders from the beginning and before entering a new city or village. these parties and individuals proved very important in identifying suitable batik sme clusters.

Sustainable ProductionCBi’s sustainable production (sp) component aimed to increase the use of environmentally friendly technologies and practices by batik smes through promoting sustainable alternatives within the production process that use fewer materials and generate less pollution. activities in the sp component included 28 workshops on environmental oriented Cost management, Chemical management and Good housekeeping and 48 workshops on Water and energy efficiency, appropriate (Fit for purpose) technology and utilization of natural dyes.

CBICLEAN BATIKINITIATIVE

Page 31: Publication (6.42 MB)

29annual report 2013

the key to the success of the sme training scheme was the presence of committed local trainers who were able to adapt and socialize well within the local batik community. the leading organizations behind CBi had learned the lesson through earlier programs that it is necessary to involve locals in order to be accepted and welcomed by conservative and traditionally orientated villagers. therefore, it was important for CBi to optimize the local human resources in order to enhance the program’s impacts. special attention was paid to the trainings of trainers (tot) to build and improve local competencies.

With its fully qualified team of CBi experts, local technical consultants and external specialists, CBi was able to assist all participating batik smes after the batik workshop owners or their representatives had attended the relevant workshops. the smes received on average eight personalized half-day coaching sessions in order to identify individual hot-spots for assistance to improve their production workshop, and to set up their production in a more environmentally-friendly way.

as an integrated program that promotes a sustainable batik production process, CBi recognized the importance of addressing production and consumption simultaneously in order to achieve its goals. sustainable production and consumption can be seen as two sides of the same coin. these two elements complement and mutually reinforce each other. therefore, CBi paid particular attention to the promotion and awareness aspects of the program.

Sustainable ConsumptionCBi’s sustainable Consumption (sC) component aimed to promote the trade of clean batik and improve consumers’ consumption behaviours and patterns in general. activities in the sC component included marketing training for multiplier organizations, marketing workshops for smes, public awareness campaigns, business matchmaking, online marketing and domestic and international trade fair promotion.

the CBi marketing team followed the successful strategy of the sp component and conducted training of trainers seminars on marketing at the beginning. these trainings again targeted multiplier organizations, government institutions, and associations and were conducted three times, each for three days. the training content was developed taking into account the results of a survey conducted by CBi that involved the first batch of participating smes. the assessment identified urgent needs

in the fields of General marketing Concept, price and negotiation, exhibition, promotion, and product and design.

the lack of creativity or self-confidence to create new designs or original batik motifs encouraged CBi to extend the technical training and production component by an additional module: Workshop for product and design development for smes. thanks to the strong network CBi had developed over the time, several well-known indonesian designers provided their support to the initiative. together with commercially successful designers, CBi conducted 11 workshops related to product development and finishing, and the result was a beautiful batik shawl collection as well as a breathtaking ecoBatik signature Collection of 42 pieces—a ready to wear fashion line in which all the batik fabric was contributed by CBi-supported smes. the shawl collection and the ecoBatik signature Collection proved to be the centre of attention at all exhibitions and events.

during regular evaluation visits and needs assessments, CBi realized that most of the participating smes had no clear idea about marketing and promotion as they mostly relied on only a few wholesalers and had very little contact with the end consumers. this changed significantly after CBi conducted 16 three-day marketing seminars for smes across six provinces in indonesia. these seminars were very sought after and always in high demand. the attractive part of the overall marketing training was that the program gave participating smes the opportunity to practise their sales and marketing skills “live” during trade fairs and exhibitions coordinated and organized by CBi. CBi always paid attention that provinces were evenly represented during the events and that as many different smes as possible were able to benefit from the activities offered.

during the four years of the program, CBi succeeded in participating in eight international promotion events. especially notable were the presentation of the ecoBatik signature Collection at itB Berlin, Germany; CBi’s participation in the 14th singapore Gift and premium Fair; and CBi’s best sales event was the 76th tokyo international Gift show in Japan.

Page 32: Publication (6.42 MB)

30 annual report 2013

CBICLEAN BATIKINITIATIVE

With over 500 supported smes in indonesia, domestic promotion had a clear priority to support the industry and to stimulate consumption of environmentally friendly batik. CBi managed to participate in 45 domestic promotion events all over indonesia. Well-known flagship events such as adiwastra nusantara and the World- Batik summit were included annually in the trade fair and promotion calendar. the CBi Batik promotion roadshow in all major five-star hotels in Bali was also a great success. not only was CBi able to raise awareness of working and production conditions in the batik industry, it was also able to showcase the art-like production process through live batik making demonstrations.

Besides product promotion, CBi also paid particular attention to the younger generation—as the future consumers of sustainable and more environmentally friendly products. therefore, CBi ran awareness campaigns focusing on education and knowledge sharing on the environmental impacts of batik production.

a wider audience was informed about the program through the presence of a CBi booth at 20 awareness Campaign events. the highlights were definitely the indonesian Climate Change expo and the CBi exhibition indonesian Batik – a living heritage at the indonesian national Gallery in Jakarta and in solo.

therefore, it is not surprising that CBi succeeded in building a reputable image within the relevant circles of organizations and institutions and that our experts were invited to introduce and share the concept of sustainable batik production and consumption on a regular basis.

Policy DialogueCBi’s policy dialogue (pd) component aimed to contribute to the development of an enabling policy environment. activities within this component included policy dialogues and lobby group activities at local, provincial and national levels.

over the program’s four-year lifespan, CBi was able to organize in indonesia 18 policy dialogue events, Forums and lobby Group discussions at national, provincial, and regional level in all six provinces. the ministry of environment and the ministry of industry have actively supported the initiative. the policy dialogue events and forum discussions have led to a better understanding of the issues in the batik industry and the negative impacts for humans and nature. at the regional level especially, CBi was able to persuade local government to pay more attention to the impact of the batik industry on the environment, and to open minds to its sustainability concept. ■

WISMAJERMAN

Expanding our network to East Java

in 2013 ekonid in surabaya was affected by the renovation works of the Wisma Jerman premises; however, we did have our highlights!

in april, the German senator of economics, labour and ports of the Free hanseatic City of Bremen, martin Günthner, along with the German ambassador to indonesia, dr. Georg Witschel, visited surabaya accompanied by a business delegation to meet with the Governor of east Java, dr. h. soekarwo, for cooperation talks, mainly in the maritime sector. as both cities are important seaports, the field of ports management was of special interest to the German delegation members.

pt. akr Corporindo, an internationally operating indonesian company founded in surabaya, is planning to open an integrated industrial and ports estate in Gresik (Java integrated industrial and ports estate, Jiipe). to introduce this project to prospective investors, a group of Ceos of German companies based in Jakarta and other asian countries visited the akr office and the building site of the project in July.

in november, the second delegation from Germany visited surabaya. Five businessmen from German medium enterprises from the Federal state north rhine Westfalia, accompanied by the state secretary for economy, energy, industry , small and medium sized Businesses and trade, dr. Günther horzetzky, met with local companies for cooperation talks as well as with the Governor of east Java. prior to their departure, they visited one of the ekonid-member companies, pt. meco inoxprima, a manufacturer of processing equipment and plants, mainly for the food industry.

the peak of the ekonid 2013 agenda in surabaya was without doubt the 2nd ekonid-sheraton oktoberfest, which again took place at the sheraton surabaya. almost 300 enthusiastic guests visited this highly anticipated event. the ultimate fun was experience through good traditional Bavarian live music from Germany, free flow of beer and mouthwatering Bavarian delicacies.

For the coming year 2014, ekonid will start with regular networking meetings in the premises of Wisma Jerman. Following the completion of renovation works by the end of 2013, we will be able to use the new function hall and a beautiful tropical garden for presentations and cocktails with our members and everyone interested in Germany related business themes. ■

MAKE ITIN GERMANY

Depicting Germany as an interesting and attractive place to live and work

the “make it in Germany” portal of the Qualified professionals initiative provides a multilingual internet portal for international skilled workers and shows qualified professionals from other countries the way to Germany – and what it is that makes it worthwhile to live and work there. the Qualified professionals initiative was launched by the Federal ministry of economics and technology, the Federal ministry of labor and social affairs and the Federal employment agency and aims at providing information and raising awareness among the general public, businesses and qualified professionals about the causes and impact of the shortage of skilled workers in the stem sectors (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) in Germany.

ekonid supported the GiZ and its partner institutions, the German embassy and the Goethe-institut to host the “discover Germany!” event on saturday, november 23rd, 2013 at aryaduta hotel in Jakarta, indonesia. especially remarkable was the high percentage of indonesian female attendees at this event, which is not the usual case with the stem sectors.

during the event, the concept of “make it in Germany”, the background of the initiative, the requirements for taking part, the application process, language aspects, visa regulations for indonesian citizens, the salary structure in the relevant sectors etc. were pointed out. Germany was depicted as an interesting and attractive place to live and work – especially for skilled professionals as it is open to new ideas and innovation. during the coffee and lunch breaks, the participants had the chance to get more information at the information booths of the partner institutions.

the highlights of the event were two panel discussions. in the first, three indonesian nationals who, have spent a significant amount of time in Germany and are now living in indonesia again, shared their personal experiences of living and working in Germany and the impact on their future careers. they evaluated on several aspects, such as: the first impression, activities of daily life such as commuting from one place to another and other challenges they faced in private and work life and finally their return to indonesia. they also gave some helpful advice on how to best prepare for the move to Germany.

the second panel discussion shifted the focus more towards the topic “Working in Germany”, discussing the ”importance of an internationally experienced and mobilized workforce in globalizing markets”. the participants, originating from different sectors, elaborated on their individual background and connection to Germany and shared their extensive knowledge and experience with the appreciating and well prepared audience. the topics discussed included, among others, obstacles and benefits for indonesian employees while working in a German business environment. towards the end of the discussion the participants all agreed on the triple win effect according to which all three parties will benefit: indonesia, Germany and the employee in question. ■

since mid 2012 ahk indonesia has engaged itself at greater intensity in the area of career entry for technical and vocational education and training (tvet) graduates. the aim of the engagement, is to further the development projects of the GiZ by providing a much needed industry perspective.

in the summer of 2012, ahk indonesia organized a booth for individual consultations in Greater Jakarta, surakarta and purwokerto, as well as offered seminars themed “how to write a resume?”, “Job interview: preparation and execution” and “how do i bounce back from job termination? the graduates and students were able to test their skills in interview role-plays with the ahk’s head of hr, while also receiving valuable input on their performance. the event received positive feedback; and very popular was the role-play practice. seminar literature, booth setup and the subject matter experts were provided by ahk and GiZ.

the high interest in the seminars has made evident, that seminars with themes of this kind are in great demand within indonesia’s technical and vocational schools.

in light of this, project partners ahk and GiZ have developed interactive materials as part of a follow-up project. these study materials ecompass the themes “Jobsearch and Career entry” and have been designed to be ready for use by instructors and carreer advisors in indonesian vocational schools. particularly important for the ahk and GiZ project-team is that the lessons are conducted in a flexible and easy to follow manner. Worksheets, schedules and other materials were also developed. the study material package takes the form of a building-block system, which allows teachers to select topics of special interest to them at any time, as well as to assign certain themese as homework, or even to drop others.

the materials, which came on dvds, were distributed cost-free first to teachers of partner-schools of GiZ, with the option, to implement “diesen ansatz” nationwide. Bundled with this dvd the teachers received a “teachers’s manual” in the form of a booklet, which explained how to administer the individual lesson-topics and which also encouraged flexibility in covering the lesson material. as an added benefit, a short video is included at the beginning of each lesson topic, which presented humorfully the “Best and Worst practices”. the main actors, edu and seno, presented the students with real-life identification areas. each lesson topic starst with a related analysis of the video. this allowed for a pragmatic, humorful and culturally-adjusted approach towards the start of each theme.

the project benefits from the combination of ekonid’s proximity to the economy and the experiences of the GiZ in development cooperation. through the synergy of both organizations, the project team was able to generate particular relevance for the target groups and, therefore, achieve long-term success. in addition, the innovatively designed materials may also be used for subsequent further studies and improvment in the teaching-learning process of techincal and vocational schools. Within the ahk, the project contributed towards internal capacity building efforts in the area of hr. ■

the tragic and sudden loss of the father of German Foreign minister, h. e. dr. Guido Westerwelle, made it impossible for him to attend our event. this very personal decision was respected by all of the two hundred participants in attendance that day.

JERINF E S T I VA L

Presenting true German and Indonesian creativity in diversity and promoting people-to-people relationship

picturing the differences and attractions between the two countries would make a long list; one has blonde, the other black haired folks; one has many writers, the other many singers, one has winters, the other tropical beaches. yet, like the north and south poles of two magnets, Germany and indonesia have attracted one another in a mutually respecting and benefiting relationship for more than six decades.

the Jerin Festival aimed to promote the two countries’ desire to improve their diplomatic, economic, cultural, and most importantly people-to-people relationship in a lively celebration and to engage the local community in various German-indonesian cooperation activities.

the opening ceremony of Jerin Festival was held by the ambassador of the Federal republic of Germany to indonesia dr. Georg Witschel, former Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo, deputy Governor of dki Jakarta for Culture and tourism prof. dr. sylviana murni, head of market management allianz indonesia ms. karin Zulkarnaen, president director of BmW Group indonesia mr. ramesh divyanathan and managing director of ekonid mr. Jan rönnfeld.

during the Jerin Festival, from october 18th to 20th 2013 in Jakarta, almost 10,000 visitors had the chance to enjoy three main programs: urban Culture, Jerin Faces and Jerin Careers.

visitors interacted directly with graffiti artists at the urban Culture Corner or watched live Graffiti on the roundabout, engaged in activities on the exhibition promenade or enjoyed the German Food experience while listen to music concerts.

Jerin has achieved a lot: the program proved very interesting, impressive support of the indonesian media could be won, the Jerin partners made big efforts to represent their brands, institutions and activities. local artists, foreign musicians and Jerin partners regarded the Festival with one common message: thank you for establishing the Jerin platform, for bringing us together and for offering a path to future cooperations. the Festival inspiringly presented true German and indonesian creativity in diversity. ■

Celebrating in Bavarian style

almost 300 national and international oktoberfest fans gathered in the Grand Ballroom of sheraton surabaya hotel and towers to celebrate the 2nd ekonid oktoberfest. the deeper sense of every oktoberfest is easily outlined: to have a good time, to enjoy tasty Bavarian food and free flow of beer, and, finally, to listen and dance to traditional Bavarian and international music.

sheraton surabaya performed a culinary magic and served the most popular Bavarian dishes like porkknuckles, pretzels and other kinds of bread creations, different kinds of sausages, various potato dishes and salads, and not to forget delicious German deserts and sweets.
