Inside this issue:

There’s something to look forward to the PSU Central Library.

Last October, the old li-brary terminals were re-placed by better modem-like computing machines

bly asserted; librarians/ information specialists are expected to go beyond acquiring and organizing information to establish innovative university li-brary services in their contributing to translating university objectives into meaningful services; but university libraries of today are being equipped with growing sophisticated informa-tion technologies and media including electronic digital media. Drastic changes in information (turn to p.6)

The foreign materials section is ex-cited to announce that the reference books have been catalogued and re-classified from Library of Congress (LC) to Dewey Decimal Classification System (DDC). For the past 4 months, the department has been busy doing inventories, cataloguing and technical processing at the same time.

Due to OpenBiblio’s absence for six months, not all reference books can be searched in the OPAC. The good news is, all books encoded from No-

vember are assured of bibliographic records—including newly acquired books starting on that month. Cata-loging and reclassi-fication will not cease and expects to speed up the output once Symphony system is in-stalled.

At present, the FM section is catalog-

ing general collection books. To date, almost 20% of the collection have been classified and processed. The target phase is around 30-40 books a day, or 600–800 a month and that means it will take around six

months to catalog the entire collection.

Finding books on the shelves are quite confusing at the moment and to make things easy for everyone, we placed the new acquisitions and up-dated books on the first three shelves. On the other hand, older books are located on the succeeding shelves and are not yet searchable in the cata-log. Moreover, the presence of two classification systems will be solved by having a single system in due time.

I had the chance to interview one of the PSU’s finest professors and author of 5 critically-acclaimed books, Dr. Donald Wayne Hendon. I never had dull moments with him, as from time to time he throws out really funny punch lines. Here’s the transcript of the inter-view:

Benjamin Requiero (BR): Can you give me a short background of your academic credentials?

Donald Hendon (DH): I’m attaching a short bio-sketch I use to generate con-sulting. Lots of info there. Right now: BBA Management 1962, University of Texas at Austin. MBA Marketing 1964 University of California at Berkeley. PhD Marketing 1971 University of Texas at Austin.

BR: I searched your profile from the UMUC website and read that you’ve travelled in 8 countries and 13 states (US) including Puerto Rico. What made you decide to go to the King-dom of Saudi Arabia and teach?

DH: Actually, I’ve given seminars and done consulting in 36 nations on 6 continents, since the early 1970s. I’ve TAUGHT in 8 nations. I give most of my seminars in the Asia-Pacific region during summer vacations from my university. I retired from full-time teaching in 2003 and devoted myself to consulting seminars, again in the Asia-Pacific region, not in the USA. I usually make 4 trips a year overseas (from my US base in Mesquite, Ne-vada near Las Vegas, where I have a house overlooking the 11th hole of the Casablanca Hotel-Casino’s golf

course) and spend about a month on each trip on business. Why Saudi Ara-bia? My good friend Zafar Ahmed (who taught at PSU last school year) recruited me and made sure PSU made me “an offer too good to re-fuse.”

BR: How do you find Prince Sultan University? How about the learning culture of its students? (or young Saudis in general)

DH: PSU is an interesting place to teach. The learning culture of its stu-dents and young Saudis in general—both interesting.

BR: Would you see the Business & Marketing degress (e.g. BBA/MBA) prosper in the Kingdom of Saudi Ara-bia?

DH: Yes.

BR: In your 30 years of teaching abroad, where was the most memora-ble place? How about the least?

DH: Most memorable: 2 come to mind—University of Nevada at Las Vegas (my first full-time teaching job) and Universiti Putra Malaysia in Kuala

Lumpur. I love multi-cultural Malaysia and its great food and interesting peo-ple. Great weather, too. Had a view of the 2 towers of Petronas Building (then the tallest building in the world) from my apartment.

BR: You have published 5 books and in my opinion you’re the only faculty in PSU that has those numbers. Who/ What inspires you to write books?

DH: The money from royalties is good. Plus, being a published author helps me get consulting jobs.

BR: Speaking about your books, which is your personal favorite? What was the most difficult to write? (turn to page 10)

The story begins in Afghanistan, from the perspective of a young boy. The usual antics of boys, such as throwing stones at the neighbor’s one-eyed dog and using a mirror to reflect the sun’s rays through the neighbor’s window to annoy him, are graphically described. We find out his best friend is a Hazari, a minority, and looked down on by many Afghanis. The annual kite competition comes around and Khalid and his friend enter the competition. The goal is to fly your kite with shards of glass glued to the string and cut the string of your op-ponent. After some hours flying, Khalid wins the competition. His Hazari friend goes to retrieve the kite but is set upon by the local bully and his cronies. This marks the beginning of the end of the two boys’ friendship. As the Afghanistan war rages on, the father moves the fam-ily to Pakistan for greater safety. We then find we are less than half way through the book as the story takes sev-eral further twists and turns

The most impressive aspect of the story for me was the twisting and turning of the story. You cannot miss out any chap-ter of the book without missing a major part. It holds your attention from the first few pages right until the end. And there are a whole variety of characters with which everyone can empathize or de-spise, as they see fit.

ingly becoming more knowledgeable about information technology and more conversant about computers and the Internet, they demand high-level information services tailored to their informa-tion needs. information technology demand li-brarians/ information specialists to adopt to the advanced environment, and to forecast and be prepared for forthcoming evolutions; these facts point to the significance of continuous education to librarians/information specialists, professional as well as supportive. Continuing education op-portunities encompass both formal and informal learning situations, re-quiring special leaves, sabbaticals, etc. to enable involved individuals to attend courses, workshops, institutes, seminars.

Continuing professional education is a lifelong learning, indispensable for professional growth, and instrumental for sustaining one’s competence. As university user population is increas-

work effectively & efficiently, to equip them with tools needed to serve users satisfactorily, and to identify and em-

brace appropriate technologies to apply in their daily work.

University library education means fre-quently include certi-fied programs, up-coming workshops, local and regional training institutes, web courses, semi-nars, panel presenta-

tions, group discussions, committee board meetings, including annual meetings, and conferences.

Hence, PSU Central Library has of-fered useful continuous education op-portunities through the last four months to candidates from Central Library and College for Women Branch Library to attend workshops, meetings and day-long training ses-sions in Prince Salman Central Univer-sity Library (KSU) and Arab Union Catalogue Centre (AUC). Also, one candidate from the Central Library attended a three-day workshop on Development of Skills in Information Search, organized by both the Insti-tute of Diplomatic Studies and Special Libraries Association—Arabian Gulf Chapter and taking place in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from 26-28th of January 2009.

other from College for Women Branch Library. Our library’s actual use and benefit from AUC service will be real-izable after the installation and opera-tion of Symphony automated library system.

Arabian Advanced Systems (AAS) has been technically contributing to the establishment, operation, and promot-ing of AUC use; moreover, several library and information specialists and cataloguing experts have been in-volved in laying basic infrastructure of AUC project, including the present writer himself who took charge in preparation of standards and policies

governing Arabic subject headings used in AUC bibliographic records, taking into consideration Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). In addition to the basic require-ments of Arabic and Islamic sub-ject headings, the text of AUC subject heading standards and policies embraces approxi-mately one hundred (100) pages.

Library of Congress Subject Headings list is undergoing con-stant substantial changes to adapt to recent trends in subject analysis, indexing language con-struction and grammar, facet analysis strategies, and pro-descriptor coinage. LC subject head-ings have overwhelmingly compli-cated rules, cases and subdivisions no

King Abdulaziz Public Library has es-tablished, and operates Arabic Union Catalogue and has launched offering its services to subscribing library and information centres, such services include search and retrieval of biblio-graphic records. It is needless to say that OCLC has set the pace in this field and has been consulted in planning AUC projects. Now, Arab Union Cata-log Center constitutes a bibliographic utility funded by King Abdulaziz Pub-lic Library, “charged with the estab-lishment, development, operation and provision of the AUC, and related ser-vices.”

Its database stands as a remarkable and rich catalogue of bibliographic records for Arabic monographs held by member libraries that embrace national, public, and academic librar-ies; preparation of records take into consideration latest library and docu-mentation standards used to describe item format, contents and location. Arab Union Catalogue Center offers basic technical support services and training to subscribing libraries’ cata-loguers. AUCC’s membership appli-cation form explains fundamental as-pects, terms, user obligations, sub-scription fees, period and termination and dealing with misuse of AUC. How-ever, its subscription fees range be-tween SR 1900 (500 USD) to SR 18,500 (5,000 USD) depending on number of library holdings (titles), and number of user accounts. PSU Central Library has recently subscribed to AUC ser-vice, last week two of its staff partici-pated in training offered by AUCC, one from the Central Library, the

longer needed in libraries and infor-mation centres using latest automated information systems such as Sym-phony, and in such advanced digital environment equipped with various search methods and strategies, and increasingly oriented to offering user-friendly search facilities to users.

Therefore, I would advise AUCC ad-ministration to regularly revise AUC subject heading standards and poli-cies, lay aside LC subject headings’ numerous rules and policies and adopt more adequate subject head-ings of their own, making use of the expertise of the relevant Arab infor-mation specialists, who collaborated with AUC project team in the outset and who are ready to collaborate when asked to finally accomplish AUCC goals.

How long does it take you to write a book?

DH: I like CLASSIC FAILURES IN PRODUCT MARKETING the most. It’s a book about dumb mistakes in busi-ness. I wanted to call it IN SEARCH OF FAILURE (because IN SEARCH OF EXCELLENCE was a hot book at the time), but my publisher didn't want to go that route. Really dumb mistakes. Some of them are very funny. No book is hard for me to write. I’ve always been a good writer. Plus I type over 100 words per minute.

BR: Do you have any immediate plans? Does that include writing an-other book?

DH: Immediate plans: finish the se-mester. Next book will be out in July 2009. It’s called 365 Powerful Ways to Influence, Persuade and Win Big—In Work and in Life!

BR: I have known that your wife is a Filipina and it quite puzzles me that you never had any teaching stints in the Philippines (or you just didn't men-tion). Why is that? By the way, have you visited the Philippines?

DH: I visited the Philippines for the first time in 1974 to give seminars. I never taught there because the salary levels are much, much too low. I turned down several offers to teach, including Ateneo de Manila Univer-sity, Asian Institute of Management (AIM), etc. Not enough money. I’ve been married to 2 Filipinas—my sec-ond and third wives. My first wife was from Boston, Massachusetts. I go to the Philippines 3 or 4 times a year.

BR: Any advice to students, or aspir-ing writers who would like to try writ-ing?

DH: I don't think its hard to so. I advise you to try.

BR: Parting words or any words of wisdom you’d like to share.

DH : W ork hard. Live long and prosper.

More infor-mation about Dr. Donald W. Hendon:

He is a master i n f l u e n c e r -p e r s u a d e r -n e g o t i a t o r . He’s a winner who knows what works, what doesn't and why. That’s because he’s been training professionals since the 1970s—people who make a living by persuading others. His seminars, given in 36 nations and territories on 6 continents, draw large, enthusiastic

audiences. He’s also a “hired gun,” helping his clients negotiate business deals all over the world. He’s not just street-smart though—his Ph.D. degree in Business is from the University of Texas at Austin and his MBA in Mar-keting is from the University of Cali-fornia at Berkeley. He’s written 5

books which have been published in 13 nations, and several h u n d r e d articles. He lives in Mes-quite, Ne-vada, near Las Vegas.

MCGRAW HILL’S MESSAGE:

On behalf of McGraw-Hill Education, we would like to thank Prince Sultan University for giving us the opportu-nity to exhibit our latest titles in the subjects of computer science and in-formation systems on the day of 21st of December; it has been an extraordi-nary experience to meet up with PSU faculty members. This event was su-perbly organized by Mr Shehzad Ghani, chair of the Extracurricular Committee (CCIS) at PSU. It was suc-cessful aiming in discussing our aca-demic textbooks which are suitable to adopt in PSU curriculum for Spring and Fall 2009 semesters. We hope that what we presented was up to the level of the faculty members’ expectations. This event in fact falls as part of an ongoing process and non-stop line of communication with PSU’s lecturers; the students’ kind presence and coop-eration in the said event gave us more motivation to keep up the level of the good service to our loyal customers like Prince Sultan University. At this point, we rest assured about PSU’s bright future in the field of education and academic excellence.

PEARSON’S MESSAGE:

We at Pearson Education are always

As the library liaison between the Col-lege of Computer and Information Sciences (CCIS) and the chair of Ex-tracurricular college committee, I was privileged to be able to invite and host on CCIS’s behalf two biggest publishers in the region and in the world. McGraw Hill accepted the invi-tation first and arrived on 21st of De-cember, 2008. During their display, they presented their software tech-nologies in a presentation in the main auditorium. They were pleased with CCIS’s arrangements for hosting them and as a token of appreciation gifted all the books they had sent for this display to CCIS. Pearson Education arrived to complete the 2nd session of this publishers display series on 27th January, 2009. Apart from their book display, they also had demo’s ar-ranged, namely www.myitlab.com, w w w . m y m a t h l a b . c o m a n d www.myaccountinglab.com. Apart from giving away all the books they had brought in for all disciplines after the request of XCC, they also sent professors login information to their websites to test and use their portals. These two events saw high number of faculty members of all colleges and departments benefitting from meeting the publishers in person, getting the latest books in their disciplines, and also getting help with course re-sources online. The Extracurricular committee of CCIS will endeavor to continue working towards inviting same and other publishers and bring in more teaching resources for the faculty members of PSU.

looking at ways to further enhance our presence and services to our custom-ers in the Gulf region. We feel very much at home operating in the Gulf region in general and in Saudi Arabia in particular. We have been actively visiting and working with Prince Sul-tan University for many years now and this year the opportunity has arisen to do a mini book fair for Instructors teaching at PSU. This was organised as a one day event and gave us the chance to meet instructors and to dis-cuss their needs and offer our assis-tance in terms of finding suitable new books for their courses and help with the crucial instructor resources avail-able with our books. It was also the first time where we had the chance to demo our superior online homework and assessment systems to faculty in their respective subjects. During this visit we were able to demo three sys-tems namely www.myitlab.com, w w w . m y m a t h l a b . c o m a n d www.myaccountinglab.com and I hope this will ultimately lead to a new and improved learning experience for students at PSU.
