People’s Desire

Agriculture is a traditional business inMyanmar blessed with favourable weatherand fertile soil. By applying modern cultiva-tion methods and using quality strains ofcrops, we can satisfy domestic demand andexport the surplus.

Giving priority to enhancement of agri-culture sector, the government has built over200 dams plus river water pumping stationsand provided quality high yield paddy strainsto the farmers. Thanks to contributions of theState, sown acreage has increased to over 53million. Over 1500 million baskets of paddyare produced annually. All-out efforts arebeing made to produce over 1600 millionbaskets of paddy this cultivation season.

Likewise, over 10 million acres of farm-lands produces over 4.9 million tons of beansand pulses. Therefore, Myanmar secures thetop position in exporting beans and pulses. Moreover, cultivation of marketable beansnamely green gram, mung bean and pigeonpea are being extended. In addition, the culti-vable lands are being covered with rubber, oilpalm, sugarcane and long staple cotton, groundnut, sesame, sunflower, mustard andniger plantations.

Agriculture sector secures the largerportion in economic growth of the State. Boost-ing production of agricultural produce willimprove the State’s economy and uplift liveli-hoods of the rural people.

Nowadays, the government is render-ing assistance for the farmers with adequatesupply of water for agricultural purpose, qual-ity strains of crops for high yield. As a result, the irrigated areas get larger and larger. Dueto harmonious efforts of the agricultural en-trepreneurs, farmers and agriculturalists, greater progress of growing and producingmultiple crops can be seen on the farmlands ofMyanmar.

Ericsson Q2, sees more growthInvestors uneasy as

Google costs rise

SAN FRANCISCO, 17 July—Google Inc is pumpinghundreds of millions of dollars into new businesses, but Wall Street is nervous about the ultimate payoff.

Investors sent Google shares down more than 6percent on Friday, a day after the Internet searchleader reported a surge in expenses during the secondquarter that caused it to miss profit estimates.

The miss was a rare stumble for Google, whichhas a track record of exceeding expectations.

Perhaps more worrisome to some is the sense thatGoogle is losing its position as the pace-setter in thetech industry, just as growth in its Internet searchbusiness slows. “There’s clearly uncertainty in theseother businesses,” said Pat Becker Jr, of Becker CapitalManagement, which does not own Google shares.Google has moved to position itself in the two keyparts of the Internet market: Web-connectedsmartphones and social networking services. STOCKHOLM, 17 July—Mobile phone maker SonyEricsson pinned its hopes on further growth in thesmartphone segment on Friday as it posted a secondconsecutive quarterly profit, driven by sales of themore expensive gadgets.

Sony Ericsson, owned jointly by Ericsson andSony Corp and which is the world’s fifth-biggesthandset maker, has cut costs and revamped itsportfolio with more phones such as the Xperia X10offering PC-like functions and links to socialnetworking sites.

After a dismal 2009 when consumers cut backon gadgets like new phones, the outlook for theindustry has started to improve and Sony Ericssonreturned to profit this year after reporting sevenstraight quarterly losses. Yet further growth willdepend on more success in the smartphone segment.

However, competition here — especially fromApple Inc’s iPhone — is intense.

Nokia Oyj, the world’s biggest handset maker, issued a profit warning in June saying itssmartphones were struggling against the iPhone, while BlackBerry maker Research in Motion hasreported disappointing quarterly shipments.

“We believe the challenging market conditionswill continue in the second half of the year,”company president Bert Nordberg said in aconference call.

Health, money woes may boost bowelcancer deaths in blacks

HOUSTON, 17 July— Being poorerand having co-existing health problemsare among the reasons why blackcolorectal cancer patients have lowersurvival rates than whites or Asians inthe United States, new study findingssuggest.

In the study, researchers analyzeddata from 37,769 Medicare beneficiariesdiagnosed with stages I to III colorectalcancer between 1992 and 2002.Compared with Asians, who had thelowest risk of death, whites had a 26

percent higher risk of death, while blackshad a 56 percent higher risk, the studyauthors found.

Although being poorer and havingother medical conditions(“comorbidities”) partly explained worsesurvival rates among blacks comparedwith whites and Asians, a number ofracial and ethnic differences in colorectalcancer survival persisted and weren’tfully explained by variations in a numberof factors looked at by the researchers.

WASHINGTON, 17 July—In the end, it’sonly a beginning. The far-reaching newbanking and consumer protection billawaiting President Barack Obama’s sig-

nature now shifts from the politicians tothe technocrats. The legislation givesregulators latitude and time to come upwith new rules, requires scores of studiesand, in some instances, depends on inter-national agreements falling into place.

For Wall Street, the next phase repre-sents continuing uncertainty. It also of-fers banks and other financial institutionsyet another opportunity to influence andshape the rules that govern their busi-nesses.

In hailing the bill’s passage in theSenate on Thursday, Treasury SecretaryTimothy Geithner acknowledged that im-plementing the new law will take time.

Autopsies on the elderly couple —he was 90, she was 89 — on Thursdaypointed to a tragic end to lives they

shared for more than 60 years. Police es-timated they had been dead at least fourdays before a newspaper carrier called911 out of concern that papers had piledup by their garage.

Investigators were trying to determinewhat turned an elevator into a death trapinside the Wadsworths’ three-storeyhome overlooking Georgia’s coastalmarshes. Stunned family members, meanwhile, looked for a shred of solace.

For Goldman, it was achance to put behind it acase that had tarnished itsreputation after it emergedrelatively unscathed from
