EU launches investigationinto pharmaceutical industry

BRUSSELS, 18 Jan— The European Union (EU)antitrust regulator said Wednesday it had launched aninvestigation into the pharmaceutical industry for analleged lack of competition.

Inspectors from the European Commission raided anumber of innovative and generic pharmaceuticalcompanies as part of the sector inquiry, which is aresponse to indications that competition in pharmaceuticalmarkets in Europe may not be working well.

The Commission said fewer new pharmaceuticals arebeing brought to market and the entry of genericpharmaceuticals sometimes seems to be delayed, whichcould result from agreements between pharmaceuticalcompanies restricting competition or unilateral abuses ofdominant position. “From 1995-1999 an average of 40novel molecular entities were launched per year. From2000-2004 the figure was only 28,” it said.

The Commission said it would also look into whethercompanies may have created artificial barriers to entrythrough the misuse of patent rights, vexatious litigation orother means, and whether such practices may violate EUantitrust rules.— MNA/Xinhua
